Once again, we have an unearthed character. This time, she was level 61 and parked in act 4 of nightmare.

When I loaded up this character, she was sporting a Vampire Gaze and Lionheart, but many of the other endgame items were equipped, including Chaos. The offhand was Bartuc's. I have a whirlwind barbarian (IK), but I never finished the game with him. He is parked in Act 2 Hell, probably to stay. Anyway, it turns out that I don't like whirlwind as a skill that much. :| I had fun, but the skill is a bit hard to control, and I spent a lot of time just whirling at no one, especially when my target decided to move.

At the outset, I had decided that this was not just a whirlsin, but a barbarian themed assassin, so I had to use only a barbarian mercenary once he became available. Despite my best efforts to make Tostig useful, he was generally not much help. From time to time, I'd be trucking along, and I'd realize that he had died, and I wasn't sure when. I forget what his early weapons were, but I used a Death Colossus Blade for a while, and while the damage was good, it was a bit slow. In late NM / early Hell, he was using Death, Duress in an eth base, and eth Vamp Gaze. He still died a lot (especially to PIs), so I switched the armor to Treachery to boost his resists. I made him a Lawbringer in an eth Legend Sword and put Crown of Thieves on him. He survived marginally better, I guess. Once he got to level 83, I put on the eth Andy Visage. I also put an Oath eth 1.07 Balrog Blade in the stash for when Lawbringer wasn't putting out enough damage (or against floors with no undead). I could have used Death again, but Oath is much faster (frequent leeching). I'm also pretty sure that he used an eth Stone armor at some point. I tried a bunch of things to keep him alive.

Despite my best efforts, he just died a lot and wasn't much help.

For much of Hell, the character killed fairly slowly (I swapped between all different odd /playersx commands a bit), but this was in part because I stopped spending skills points once my main skills were maxed. It wasn't until midway through Hell that I put any points in Death Sentry, which helped quite a lot in clearing out groups. This disappointed me somewhat as the character kind of settled into being a weaker version of my kick/trapper build. I also just don't have a particularly good offhand fist weapon. I have a couple of decent rares, but even the best one is not that great (for damage):

I used an online calculator to see what that'd be like after upgrading, and it was pretty underwhelming, and not any better than the uniques I have, so not worth the Um.

Edit: I should add that having Dragon Flight (from the claw that Chaos is in) on the left click made it easy to use in fights, but made targeting difficult and also made it nearly impossible to pick up items from the ground while mobs were near. It also made using a TP while fighting a challenge. While fighting, it was *really* useful, though. I probably should have used hotkeys to swap the left click between normal attack and DF, but I never bothered.

I think the initial plan was to max Venom and Claw Mastery, and then ... I dunno. Did I even have a plan? I was at a loss as to what to spend the (I think) 29 saved skills points I had midway through Hell. I considered one of the Shadows, but I found Shadow Master to be a bit annoying (e.g. mindblasting/converting champions and uniques >:| ) at times and Shadow Warrior to be quite limited. I put points into Death Sentry only because that would make the game go faster. :(

I think my skill choices just didn't complement whirling or maybe I made poor item choices. I read some of the mat/pat posts in the big builds compilation thread to get ideas on what to do for a whirlsin, but the only think that I noticed was that many prior wwsins used one sentry or another. I feel like I must have been doing something wrong as the build just wasn't that great for me.

Maybe my AR was just too low. I'm not sure why didn't notice it earlier, but I did notice it when fighting Baal. Maaaybe I need to go upgrade that rare claw and see if the +AR makes that difference.

Maybe I've been playing too much D2 (or too much highly twinked D2) as it became a bit of a chore to finish. I pushed to finish today not because I would be reaching a goal but because I wanted to stop playing this character. Hmmmm.

This does make me wonder, though, can an Act 5 Merc be good? Is there some combo that could make Tostig really sing? That may not lead to a new build, but it's something to think about. Frequent reviving of the merc was definitely a drawback of this character. Melee characters often don't need a tank (and the Shadow Master can provide that if needed), but the barbarian merc wasn't even that good at applying Decrepify (from Lawbringer) since he died so much. Aside from looking pretty fly with his giant sword, he didn't bring much to the fight. :(

Before that, though, I will probably do some rune farming with older characters for a bit (maybe some trav runs with my horker). If I were so lucky as to find another Cham, that'd mean a whole spate of new characters (maybe even a sept), so I think I'll take a little break from matting and patting. 4 "completed" characters in as many weeks is probably good for now. :)

@snickersnack I use my HC WW Assassin as a Pit Runner. 3 piece Tals (helm, armour, belt) with DF to position the Act 2 merc. DS to thin the crowds. Lots of resists, dual leech, MF, P1 all the way. She's fun and safe and a different runner to your more standard chars (Poisonmancer, ZerkBarb, etc)

I believe a good buff to Babarian Mercanaries would be if they carried all cries except howl and use them from time to time.

Would be funny to have him use Find item haha
Hmmmm, he does use Stun and Bash, but then there's only one type of barbarian merc. It'd be cool if you got to choose attack skills or warcries, and probably only the Taunt part of the tree. Hmm, that seems like a really good idea to me!
@snickersnack I use my HC WW Assassin as a Pit Runner. 3 piece Tals (helm, armour, belt) with DF to position the Act 2 merc. DS to thin the crowds. Lots of resists, dual leech, MF, P1 all the way. She's fun and safe and a different runner to your more standard chars (Poisonmancer, ZerkBarb, etc)
That's a good idea, but this character is barb themed, so she uses the barb merc (if I change mercs, then I'm not doing the same character). I could easily do that with my kick/trapper, though. I actually don't remember what runs I did with that one....
