Map Seed/rerolling

Map Seed/rerolling

I haven't done much single player playing in the past, but I've been playing a character fairly consistently now. I'm at a point where I'm trying to run Meph, Andy and the Countess in NM. I've rerolled the map seed several times, and I found one which is alright for all 3, but could definitely be faster for all 3 as well. I'm hesitant to reroll it and have to spend a long time rediscovering the routes until I find one that will save me more time per game running all 3. At the same time, it'd be handy to have quicker routes, for obvious reasons.

How often do you single player experts tend to reroll maps on areas you're running, is it something thats worth doing until you get very nice map seeds, or not really worth going for real nice map seeds until you're up to the areas you'll be running indefinitely (in other words, I've got a good number of these runs left, but once I leave NM and get into hell, I probably wont be hitting the NM MF spots too much anymore)

Thanks!

Re: Map Seed/rerolling

Trying to roll for multiple targets will take you years. Pretty much everyone rerolls seeds for exactly one target, then only runs that target.

I personally tend to spend a long time looking for a wonderful seed, but I have enough chars to be able to dedicate one to one target indefinitely. In situations where I don't plan to run long (NM meph, trying something out at a given target), I generally settle for pretty good rather than wonderful, and I can usually find one within 20-30 min. Looking for wonderful ones has taken days before.

Re: Map Seed/rerolling

CG makes an excellent point about having characters dedicated to particular runs- those are the ones where it pays to optimize the seed. I have some otherwise retired characters, and some characters developed to do specific runs, and for them it was well worth the effort to reroll seeds to get fantastic maps. If you are going to do thousands of runs, a great seed is a good investment. My Meph runner was built from day 0 to run Hell Meph and it took hours to get her a great seed, but she's got it now (at least until another mis-click on the difficulty selection screen...) and she has made great use of it. I also have an Andy runner, Pits and AT runners, (slow) WSK/Baal runners, and couple of characters now running LK. Those were all worth getting good maps. I don't think I've worried much about a rerolling a NM map seed more than a couple of times, though (probably just Meph for item runs and WSK for some levelling runs before moving onto Hell) since the plan is to move onto Hell.

I did actually reroll a normal map seed repeatedly, I have to admit, for a horking MF Frenzy barb to get a good map for running Coldcrow in search of TC3 items. I have a GF barb who runs the Hell Council and there was one time when I clicked Nightmare and I reflexively recoiled in dismay until I realized there was no need to then go looking for a good Trav map...

One thing I have learned is that even if you lose the minimap sketch, from moving the character from one computer to another (or between Mac and PC), the actual map layout remains the same. So there is no need to worry about that.
