I had a 31 HC kicker a couple seasons ago, but as it was HC, most of the things I have to add probably don't apply. Quite frankly, without the Merc, a 31 kicker isn't all that fantastic, so making a SC one doesn't sound all that fun. In HC, where mercs are acceptable and 2-handed chargers are common, they are considerably stronger.
If I remember correctly, though, a 2 Shael Cutlass ([-30] base) hits the top kick breakpoint. Cutlasses of Amplify Damage are shoppable in Act 1 Nightmare, and can be socket Quested to hopefully get 2 sockets. The only down-side is the poor range of a Cutlass.

cutlass is alright, it cant swipe at 7 frames but thats situational
the major benefit of claws isnt range, its the
+skills. a +2ma/70ias talon is shoppable. lets u hit the Bp with fade and still get +dt for 4kicks allowing more into fade (as each dr% is asymptoticly more effective each 1% you add).. and god speed little doodle if u can score a rare with amp, +skills and any ias or 2os.

its not that diff in sc, the kicker is versatile and "viable" but nothing pro vs a good wealthy melee. 31 makes up though, i was speaking more from 30 vs 30
No we dont use mercs at all in sc (well thats not true, but anyone who does us them,, iv never seen anyone accept it as legit) infact mercs for a kicker means easy slvl1 TS charges that can boost kick dmg ~300% quick, i like it when someone uses a merc.. dflight onto it, charge up and pound the opponent (ps charged kicks can last for multiple volleys). u can also leech off any minion a bit.. 1pnt in cobra strike is pretty nifty in situations.
since u guys are talking sorc,hammers, w/e those are all range anyway, they can hit you without being next to you, or hit you while moving,, they dont have a word,. very very different then a conc barb or zealot which i was imagining
