Is it safe?

Is it safe to play D2 without any sort of virus protection/firewall?

Reason asking is I recently acquired an older laptop, which slows down dramatically if I have Norton 2005 installed on it (and I mean SLOW).

The only reason I'll be using this laptop at all is to play D2 on my lunchbreak, but if it's going to be dangerous (account hacking or some crap) then I won't do it.

Thanks in advance.

as long as u dont download any third party softwares (hacks, bots, etc.) or go to websites that ppl tell you to go on bnet, u should be fine.

I don't use anything but D2. I just wondered if just being on the internet without any protection could pose a threat to my D2 account. I don't really care what happens to the laptop, as it is old (Thinkpad 600), and was free.

I would have to say, if using windows and NO firewall or Virus protection, there is always a chance to get a trojan or get hacked.

No, its not safe.

If you are connected to the internet on any sort of broadband connection without a firewall AND antivirus your smallest concern should be someone on bnet hacking you...

That's just my two cents, but perhaps its because I do this kinda stuff for a living.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree here. You'll want at least rudimentary virus protection if you're using a windows machine. May I suggest installing AVG Antivirus, available for free (personal edition), at http://www.grisoft.com

Suggestion taken, I'll do that tonight when I get home.

I would just use Norton 2005, but like I said, the computer isn't even worth using then (and it meets the bare minimum requirements).

I agree with Usu here... AVG catches stuff that McAffe doesn't and the price is right.

As the Governator say, "Do it now!"

I'd just like to say that I prefer Avast! Antivirus instead of AVG.

I've found it to have very transparent updates (I'm not sure if AVG has fixed this now, but before the user had to take action to install important updates, which kind of defeated the point). I'd even prefer it to many commercial alternatives. I was forced to switch from AVG since in the latest major update, it made Windows start up much slower. Uninstalled + switched and everything was fine again. It could just have been me though, but it seemed to be due to that software anyway.

Regardless, it's the other of the two most well-known free antivir tools I know.

AVG updates are not completely transparent. It will now update automatically by default, but it pops up a window to do it.

I would belive that if you only played D2 then you should be fine. Regardless of what other people think, just playing D2 doesn't give you trojans unless you ofcourse download 3rd party hacks/bots/etc.
