Introducing ARGH the Wolfbarb

This guy is all Babyhell’s fault! I read his Shapeshifter thread and as I was in the process of making a Bear Paladin, I thought this might be a good next build. I took a look at my Wolfhowls and one of them was very nice. So, I decided to go ahead with the project and I’m glad I did. This guy is an ANIMAL. He is now one of my favorite builds. I played Hell on Players 5 simply because I wanted to finish and not because he couldn’t handle P8. As a final test I ran Hell Cows at Players 8 and while very fast he had no problems surviving. A first for me is that I had zero deaths.

I had created a barb for the TC3 tourney and he was sitting there at level 13. When I started him, I thought I would turn him into a frenzyer wielding axes and I had already dumped points into skills that required a respec which I immediately took.

At first, I thought I’d follow Babyhell’s build with a few minor equipment changes as I knew Grief was a great weapon and the skills distribution seemed good. However, I then took a look at the Mat/Pat Compilation and there were 32 builds with equipment all over the place, a wide variety of skill distribution and 10 different weapons. About the only cookie cutter part to this build is using Wolfhowl.

I particularly found Grape’s and TopHatCat64’s reports interesting. Given all of the Wolfbarb builds in the compilation thread I decided to do some compiling of my own since I don’t really like to simply copy a build. The only Wolfbarb guide I could find was from 2005 and I thought it was pretty basic and so I also decided to take a stab at writing another build guide.

If you are interested here’s how others handled being a Wolfbarb.

Code:
Weapon choices were varied with half using a two-hand weapon. 9 used Grief, 7 used an upped Ribcracker, 4 used Griswold’s Redemption, 3 used Tomb Reaver, 2 used Oath, 2 used a BotD, 2 used Doombringer and 1 each used Rune Master, Death Cleaver and IK Maul.
I had just finished a Palabear using Grief with 6fpa and was very happy with both the speed and damage. Filling available sockets with Shael runes the best of the two-hand weapons is a Tomb Reaver at 6fps. Grief phase blade comes in at 5 fps for the wolf barbarian and depending how you socket Gris’s Caduceus it can be 3, 4 or 5 fps. However, to get to 3 fps you have to sacrifice all 4 sockets to Shael runes.
For the 16 that didn’t use a two-handed weapon there was the decision what to put in the other hand. Nine used a shield and seven used dual weapons. Of the shield users, 6 used Stormshield and one each used Tiamat’s Rebuke, Head Hunter and Lance Guard. Of the dual wielders 5 used grief as the main weapon and 2 used Beast in the offhand, the others used Lawgiver, Silence and a dex-glitched phase blade. The other two were eBoTD Berserker Axe-Beast and a Doombringer-Baranar Star combos.

Not everybody noted what Merc they used or what skill the merc possessed, but of those that did all but one used a might merc. The exception was PhineasB who used an Act 5 merc.

There were also several ways used to handle physical immunes. No real surprise than 65% used Reapers Toll.

20 used decrepify via Reaper’s Toll
3 used Berserk with one using a Passion weapon to get it
3 used Amp damage, 2 via Atma amulet and 1 via a crafted polearm
1 used decrepify and amp damage via Atma amulet and Reaper’s Toll
1 used Conviction via Infinity and a whole lot of elemental damage
1 did most of Hell in a Party and had a lot of elemental damage

The unusual was Grape’s having every one of his items or charms providing elemental damage and then having the merc use Infinity to provide Conviction.

Skill distribution was another area where there was a lot of divergence. Not everyone provided a breakdown of their skills and some only provided a partial list. Of those that provided data everyone dumped 20 points into a weapon mastery and 1 point into Battle Command. After that, skill points went all over the place. All but one put 20 points into Battle Orders and that person put 15 into it. Shout was another that all but three maxed.

I think everyone put points into Natural Resistances and Iron Skin with the distribution ranging from 1 to 20 with most maxing Iron Skin. Only three maxed Natural Resistances but most put at least 10 points into it. Increase Speed was also very popular with most putting 1 to 5 points into it while 4 people put over 10 points into it.

There were only two other skills that garnered more than a point, Berserk and Whirlwind. One-person maxed Whirlwind as he split his time between being a wolf and a whirler. Seven people put points into Berserk with two maxing it. However, to use berserk you have to drop out of Wolf form.

On switch people used Spirit or Heart of the Oak to get +4 or +6 to all skills.

My plan

Given the weapons that I have, Grief was the best, but after working on my Wolfbarb guide I realized that Tomb Reaver offered huge magic find in a weapon as well as a weapon that does good damage. I finally decided to build ARGH from scratch using Grief and respec Bahzell to be a magic find barb wielding Tomb Reaver. More on Bahzell later.

Since you can’t issue a Warcry in wolf form and the plan was to spend all my time as a Bear and then as a Wolf, Combat skills make zero sense and Warcry skills other than Shout, BO and BC also don’t make sense. Babyhell took the purist route of not having to do a respec once he was able to equip Wolfhowl and besides my initial respec I decided to follow that plan with a minor modifcation. Rather than a bow I dumped a point in Bash and Double Swing so that I’d get two swings per monster and an additional 15% AR. I then used dual Gleamscythes till level 30 and then dual Bloodletters. With no boost in mana and +7 to Whirlwind, Whirlwind was next to useless for me so I continued Double Swing with the Bloodletters.

On switch I started with dual Spirit swords and then a Heart of the Oak flail and a Spirit sword. While I have the Vex runes to make 2 HoTOs, other than this build, I’m not sure what I’d do with two of them. So, one HoTO and one spirit on switch.

For ARGH once I had decided on Grief the next decision was Shield or a second weapon. I decided on a second weapon and given that the off-hand weapon wasn’t going to be dealing any damage it had to contribute an aura. For me that meant Beast, Lawbringer or Doom. Because of the +2 skills and the Holy Freeze aura I went with Doom.

The hardest decision was what Mercenary to use. I used a cold Rouge till Mid Act 2 in Nightmare when I switched to a Might merc that I used till I reached Nightmare Act 5. At that point I decided to experiment and went with an Act 5 merc wielding Lawbringer in an Eth Champion Sword. How could I not choose the one named Wulfgar!

Wulfgar worked well enough that I kept him all the way through Hell. I had no issues with him wandering off by himself, probably in large part because I was hurtling around and he had to keep up with me. He didn’t really kill many monsters by himself. However, he sure was durable and between Knockback from Sanctuary, Stun and the 12 second Decrepify he more than made up for not being able to kill many monsters by himself.

One of the reasons I decide to try the barb merc was that I was able to load up on elemental small charms and my total elemental damage including a jewel that I socketed into the Wolfhowl, Holy Freeze and Venom from Grief was

Cold – 118-171
Fire – 54-119
Lightning – 6-281
Poison – 300-325

With this much elemental damage I was able to take down PIs by myself in a reasonable time frame.

Here’s how I went through equipment.
13- 30 Sigon’s set and Angelical amulet and ring.
15 - Raven Claw
15 - Dual Gleamscythes
21 – Twitchthroe
24 – Superior horned Helm
28 - The Spirit Shroud, twin Spirit swords on switch, the eye of Etlitch, 2 rare rings
30 – Dual Bloodletters, IK Gloves and Belt
31 - IK boots
42 – Arreat’s Face, Duriel’s shell
44 – Passion Dimensional blade
45 – Raven Frost, Shaftstop
47 – Duress Boneweave Armor
49 – Passion Highland blade and Lawbringer Superior Legend Sword
60 – Grief PB and Lawbringer
65 Grief and Beast, Chains of Honor, Laying of hands, Thundergod’s Vigor, Gore Riders, Mara’s, Dwarf Star, Harlequin Crest
79 – Wolfhowl and Doom
80 – Rare ring with Mana leach instead of Dwarf Star
88 – Seraph’s Hymn instead of Mara’s

I ran Nightmare Act 2 with a Passion and a Lawbringer swords. A nice combination that I used till I could equip Grief. Mephisto went down at level 64. At level 65 I made major changes to just about all of my gear as it was time to turn into a bear. I wanted as many + skill items, hence the Harly over Arreat’s. At level 66 in bear form ARGH had more life than my Paladin bear did at level 88 and I had 40 stat points undistributed.

Hell was reached at level 74 and I found the Bear a little slow killing monsters so I switched to Players 5. Once I reached level 79 and equipped Wolfhowl I found the rate at which I killed to be much faster, but I kept things at Players 5 and just cruised through Hell.

I was surprised by how often Sanctuary helped. I knew that demons were the most common, but I had never given much thought to how many monsters were Undead. Even though I didn’t benefit from the 600% ED the knockback every 2 seconds kept the hordes from ganging up on me.

As a barbarian I never liked Demon Imps or flayers as I found them hard to catch. Well no longer, now they couldn’t get out of my way. I could even run down fleeing monsters.

The only time I had any trouble was on the bottom level where Nihlathak is found. Nihlathak himself wasn’t an issue, it was getting past all the physical immunes and Tomb vipers that spawned. Hell Temptresses and the PI version of Doom Apes that you can hardly see were all intermingled and then the Tomb Vipers Poison attack just destroyed my merc and would drop my life in half.

Because I didn’t have much MF equipment I wasn’t expecting to find much, but I actually did better than I expected. I found Bonehew, Bul-Kathos Tribal Guardian, Eschuta’s Temper, Laying of Hands, Lycander’s Flank, Tal Rasha’s Horadic Crest, The Oculus and a Reaper’s Toll.

Rune finds weren’t bad if you ignore the single Tal that the Countess dropped in both Nightmare and Hell. The Forge dropped a Pul in Nightmare and a Gul in Hell. I also found two Mal’s while in Hell.

And then I found this little beauty and almost threw it out!

@LouB I read this a while back and had never tried a wolfbarb (I don't think), but your post got me interested. I had a really bad Wolfhowl in my stash so thought I would wait.

A few days ago a very good one dropped for me in The Pit, and I respec'd my WW barb to try it out, and man, you're weren't kidding about the fun factor!! I made a Phoenix shield which has a nice aura as well as extra damage to go with it. One of my favorite characters now. :)

@Triple Helix I also did a guide that's now posted in the barb builds, but it might give you some ideas. I made a few changes and am now carrying over 400%MF and am running all areas and he is still one of my favorite builds.

Phoenix is definitely one of the shields I want to try, but right now Mmy off hand has a Blade of Ali Baba with 2 Ist runes.

Question for @LouB and the other Wolfbarb aficionados:

I’m working on a Barb and found a Wolfhowl. I’m also in need of a Nihlathak runner.

Reading your guide, I’m thinking with the guy being a tank, Grief + Lawbringer could work well for running Nihlathak. Do you know if there is any caveat to the “Slain Monsters Rest In Peace” mod on Lawbringer and how it functions when in Wolf form?

You mentioned PIs were a pain with Nihlathak, but I wonder if a solution isn’t to have Grief + Lawbringer and then on switch have a second Lawbringer but in the main hand. (I have a few in my stash.) That way if you run into PIs, just switch and wait til decrepify procs, then switch back.

Even if he might not be ideal from Nihlathak, I think I still may give the build a go. Such a fun concept.

EDIT: I'm realizing probably if I want to run Nihl with a barb, WW would be better since he's in the middle of a huge mob. Regardless, I'll play around with Wolfhowl. :)

@BBS_Agonistes Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I did a double check on the AB website and Slain Monsters rest in peace only applies if the weapon with that attribute does the killing. So having Lawbringer in the off hand in Wolf mode means it will never help.

My problem with Nihlathak was really the combination of three monsters to get past. I can't ever remember having two types of PI monsters (Hell Temptress and the night monsters - the almost invisible doom apes) and the tomb vipers with poison attack at the same time. Having Lawbringer in the switch main hand would have been a help since the vipers kept taking out my merc. I just don't think you will run into that combination that often.

ARGH is now level 90 and running all the area 85 areas of Hell with 402% MF and someday will have Enigma and a six IST phase blade in the off hand bringing the total to 501%.
