Intro and lost map ?

Hey guys. I've been reading these forums for a while now but have never come out of the shadows. I've been playing D2 for years and years, mostly on bnet till about a year ago when I switched to SP and found these forums.

I was playing with my sorc doing some LK runs and I hit normal mode. The map I had was a very nice map for LK/tunnels/meph and even a doable countess run. I've read about the -seed command but I can't understand how it is supposed to help me get the map back. If I've lost the map, oh well but I'd like to get it back if I can. It gave me a Lo after only 106 runs :D

Thank you.

Re: Intro and lost map ?

First off... the welcome to the forum.

Secondly, your map seed had nothing to do with the Lo dropping. By the time you get to the Lo dropping, the seed has been reset many times over. Now, to restore your map, you need to know it's seed, which you can get from atma (the program, not the character in the game). If you don't know the seed, there's nothing you can do at this point to recover it, short of going back to look for backup files. If there's no backup, and you don't know the seed, then you're stuck looking for another map.

Re: Intro and lost map ?

Have a close read the Accepted Gameplay Rules (SPF AGR) linked in my signature. There are some potential problems that come with using the -seed command, and the correct process for using it is explained there.

To find out the original map seed, hopefully you've got ATMA installed and are using it (I dunno how to do this in GoMule, or if it's even possible).

In ATMA, open one of your old character backups (charactername_1.org) from before you changed the map, and move to the character tab - that will tell you the map-seed you need to know. Copy that number to the clipboard.

Then right-click your game's startup shortcut and select the Properties menu. In the Shortcut's properties box, change the "target" field to include the -seed command followed by the number you just copied from ATMA. The target box should now say something like: "C:\Program Files\DiabloII\DiabloII.exe" -seed ######.

Be absolutely certain to not actually play the game with the -seed command active. Simply start the game, open the character and double-check the map is what you want, and then exit D2 entirely without killing anything (don't just save and exit the character - close the D2 program). Remove the seed command from the shortcut, and only then should you restart D2.

Re: Intro and lost map ?

Thanks guys. I know the Lo isn't tied to the map but I'm superstitious like that. I didn't know where to get the seed from but I've got it back and the command has been removed. All back to normal, again, thanks.

Re: Intro and lost map ?

If you didn't read the link that poops posted, and just followed the steps in his post, let me add that sharing map seeds (either between players, or simply between your own characters) is considered a big no-no.

I just looked at the -seed command paragraph in the AGR and didn't see anything about not sharing between your own characters. Is this an unwritten rule, or is it written down elsewhere?

FROM FAQ

-seed
A way to recover lost maps. This should rarely be used and should always be declared. The only acceptable use is for recovering maps which are accidentally lost and if used correctly. Seeds should never be posted or shared.
Correct use: Inset seed into properties window. Start game. Load character. DO NOT PLAY THE GAME. Quit the game entirely (back to desktop). Clear the seed. Restart and play.
