Installing Diablo 2 in XP Mode on Windows 7

I wasn't sure where to post this so this seems like the best place. I'm trying to install Diablo 2 on my new computer using Windows XP Mode, but when the game performs the video test it fails. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

Re-install the game, and if you have the 64 bit version of W7 make sure to delete the (x86) out of the target line when it gives you the choice of where to install, and change the file (normally it says DiabloII or something at the end of the target line)...change that to something else. The video test should work now...I was having the same exact problem. Also, when u finally install it make sure to run as an admin and under XP service pack 3, and add "-w" to the target line to make it run under windowed mode. That should solve any problems you have.

I tried a few times to install the game within the virtual XP mode that comes with Windows 7, but didn't get it working. As you said, it fails on the video test. I had to install the game through Windows 7 and run it in XP SP2 compatibility mode instead which worked out fine for me.

I also run it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I just installed it normally (I believe I changed the path to 'c: \diablo 2' instead of 'c: \program files(x86)\diablo 2'). This path change is a good idea if the game/app you are using doesn't technically support win7/64bit etc.

I run it in full screen as well (lol) so the -w isn't necessary to make it work. I only use -skiptobnet on the shortcut to bypass the intro vids and such.

note: I think I used the compatibility mode that the others have mentioned, and of course run as admin (but that's a no brainer)

edit: adjusted path names due to AUTOSMILEYS grrrr!
