Hi all

I just thought i'd make an intro. My name is Simon and err, not counting the few breaks in between, i've been playing D2 since it came out pretty much.

I used to play a lot on battle.net but the problem i had was that there was nothing to achieve there since you could easily get yourself godly gear with some mf ing and some trading. What was left to do when you had all the good stuff? Get even better items? I didn't see the point of that, and PvP was never my thing.

So i reverted back to single player, and i find it a lot more enjoyable. The game is hard now in hell so it's not easy to beat it, and especially not with gear dependant classes like melee paladins and barbarians - which i favor the most, due to that same reason. I also don't use ATMA or anything, so that makes it more challenging still. You need to decide what to keep and what not to, because storing space is limited. You also cannot mule any items, each character has to find what he needs by himself.

So it's a challenge to play the game, you are on your own, and it's a lot more fun this way i think.

Anyway, right now im playing a traditional Zealot(lvl61) with fana aura and am doing pretty well. I used to play a concentrate barbarian but i couldn't make it in Hell so im giving it a new try with the good old Zealot. It's a trial and error process, but im going to beat the game alone with a melee fighter class char.

That's all for now, i hope you can help me if i encounter some problems along the way. Right now im doing fine but im always open for any tips you might have. I might have played the game a lot but i've never beat it on single player post 1.10 yet.

Howdy realitydream  and welcome to the SPF!

Read the stickies
Be nice to EU's
and Have a drink on me in the EMB.

Personally, I don't think any character is gear dependant. The gear helps them (a lot!) but it is possible without it.

Again, welcome and Enjoy your stay. :)

What do you enjoy outside of D2?

Thanx for the warm welcome!

Sure, it's possible without good gear for every class (arguably), but fighters have a harder time without good items than casters have i would say. Or let me put it this way, in the fightertype-gameplay, the center of interest is more the gear. I mean, if you play a Zealot and want an effective character, and want the most fun out of the game etc. you will naturally want those bad a$$ items.

Outside of D2 i work atm and it's the most boring thing i've ever done. But it's only temporary. I want to go study philosophy somewhere soon, that's the goal.

Whoo-hoo!!! A fellow Fanatic Zealot! When I was reading the preview for D2 back in the day (wow...that's got to be like 7 years ago now) I knew straight away the Pally was going to be the first char I played and even though he was just a jumble of different skills, as I'm sure most everyone else's first char was, I still knew Pallies were going to be my favourite, and they are to this day. And they've all been Zealots of some sort, with the Fanat being the one I've played the most. Never tried a Hammerdin...I likes the melee too much.

Anyway, welcome to the SPF! I don't know who the resident shin-kicker is here these days, but be warned...

Welcome! Here's your goodie basket of baked goodness and squid repelant. Don't mind the shin kickers, they're a good thing.

You covered most of the intro goodness so you've earned your extra cookies. BTW, what school of philosophy are you intrested in? Either way the EMB is a great place to go for the deep thoughts, booze, and cookies (why do you think symposiums were about getting drunk? In wine, truth) And speaking of non gear dependent palies, I still remember my Salvation/pray arua pali as my first charater *sigh*

Welcome to the SPF!

Btw I really dislike paladins for one reason only... they only have one mouse button to use... I am a melee guy but still can't get a paladin going with one button...

Salutations!

Stop by the bar, have a drink. If you are feeling down, have a few.
I love Fana Zealots meself, my first character (A Paladin  ) used a combination FoH/Fana/Zeal, and I loved it.
As for gear-reliance, check out superdave's amazon, she punched her way through the entire game, IIRC.

Hi again friends. Nice welcome you gave.

Im replying because my Zealot could use some feedback. I've now made it to act V nightmare and im on lvl 69. I had problems with Chaos Sanctuary cuz of Iron Maiden, the bow i had was too slow so it wasn't effective. But anyway i made it through although i died some times, and Diablo dropped me a Butcher's Pupil 180ed, which i really could put to some good use.

Here is my other gear btw (remember im playing untwinked):

Armor: The Spirit Shroud (great mod CBF!, although low defense)
Shield: Magical Protector shield (144 def, 15 +block, 44 to all res)
Helm: Rockstopper Sallet
Boots: Infernostride (im liking them! the max fire res mod is pretty good)
Belt: Sigons
Gloves: 20Ias, 15 cold res (suckz)
Some mf/resist/leach rings and a pretty nice skill amu i got on gambling.

Anyway, what im wondering is, how much strength should i have? I've 155 right now without gear and i was thinking about some 165-170 points in it so i can wear some heavier armors in case i find something. I got myself a lum rune so i was thinking about socketing a nice armor and make Smoke. Add a nice +res Rhyme to that and im prepared for hell, right?

Speaking of hell, what are the base resists in there? -60 right?

Hello there and welcome to the forums!

Untwinked is really a more satisfying way to play, it makes you feel good about making it, and every (well almost) drop is exciting!

Your question: In hell resists are at -100, but since you get two resist scrolls from Malah, its effectively -80. Unless you decide not to use the scrolls Malah gives you...

edit: Mind you, the resistance penalty also applies to your merc.

Or if you die. I don't think they fixed that in 1.11, some one will correct me if I wrong :wink3: But when you die, your actual resistances do not include Malah's scrolls, the LCS shows the resistances as if the scrolls were there, but the dmg you take is as if they weren't. S&E fixes this, but it can be a real pain when your trying to retive your corpse....

You probably already have plenty of strength for most armors, so I wouldn't put any more points there. Smoke doesn't have a very big defense increase, so it's really not worth it to put in into a really heavy armor. In my opinion, you will be much better off with those points in Vitality.

It's still not fixed. I tested this one myself in the early 1.11 days. Of course, this bug doesn't exist in HC, so you can go ahead and switch to HC to avoid the bug. :wink3:

OK, i see. I've noticed that i'm taking damage pretty quickly from claw vipers and reanimated hordes, either when they charge, or when the claw vipers cast bone spear. It must be because i've got too little life, I think im gonna put points only in Vitality from now on.

Oh and thanx for the help guys.

OK, an UPDATE. (I hope someone still remembers me)

My fana zealot is now level 83. Im in Act III Hell now, and just found myself a Herald of Zakarum! :jig: quite unexpected. The problem is, my old shield Rhyme was a good enough shield (+60 all res) and the only item i had with the CBF mod, and that really is an essential mod for a melee fighter in hell, so i kind of don't want to abandon this shield :undecided: I guess i'll have to switch between the shields or something until I find Raven Frost or some other CBF item (might take awhile).

Im doing ok and i now have around 1200 life, good resists etc. (85F, 60C, 80L, 30P). The problem is that my killing speed is crap, and i still die pretty often. I had to rush past a lot of act II because I couldn't handle the skeleton hordes. If I don't find a better weapon than Butchers Pupil soon im going nuts. I need that UM rune so i can make Crecsent Moon, but it's easier said than done. Where is the best place to look for runes?

Poison is also a damn curse to me, as is the PI's (my vengance is so damn slow)

Any "hints" ? Hope this message wasn't too long.
