Help me decide

Hi I have a level 90 paladin and havent spent any points yet. I'm stuck between a hammerdin and a zealer (both with 1pt in smite of course). Basically, I want to do baal runs and uber trist. But most people say zeal is better for trist minons and hammer is better for baal runs. Help me decide please

Why not comprimise and make a Vanquisher(Smite/Hammer) or just make a hammerdin and have smiter gear in the stash to do ubers.

This is good choise. Hammerdin is very affective in baalruns, and with few gear changes, he will be able to clear uber trist with only 1 pt smite.

How about you do both? Here's my proposal!

On switch you'd need HoZ & HotO, your main weapon could be say Grief PB and Exile, HoZ, or Phoenix.

Skill distribution
1 pt wonders - 1pt. to Smite, HS, charge, salvation, redemption, Zeal
Prereqs - 1pt. to defiance, holybolt, prayer, cleansing
Synergies - 10pt. to Sacrifice
- 20pt. to Vigor and Blessed Aim
Main aura - 20pt. to Concentration (Not Fanat)
You could also redistribute these, or just use the rest to boost synergies or HS.

From here I'd recruit the assistance of an Act1 freezy Rogue equipped with Faith!

Check this out, with proper item selection, you could reach a 10k hammer and a 7.4k-7.6k Zeal attack @ 4 fps!

Not to mention your smite will do well with the Grief and your merc will destroy with her icy, fanatical, and concetrated arrows.
How does that sound? Expensive I know, but possibly one of the most versatile builds in the game. (Just watch out for them darn wailing beast with iron maiden, they're everywhere)

While faith on a merc helps reach a good zeal speed, she won't last long in uber trist. Also, if you plan on doing alot of baal runs, and trist, you'll need the life boost from CtA, so that will have to be your weapon switch.

Make a cookie-cutter hammerdin. Like said already, with a proper gear switch, you can use a one point smite effectively. Also, go ahead and put one point in fana, being a hammerdin it won't really take much away, I have a level 20 fana with only one point in it, got it for running ubers or if someone just happens to have a higher than level 39 concentration, of course though, thats before the gear switching. Just be warned, you may not be able to use fana against Meph, so your smite speed may drop a bit, along with quick leeching.

And why is that? Do you mean you won't have enough res so your gonna die? If you have good stacked light res + absorb + high leech, you'll be able to kill her with fana.

People are so narrowminded nowadays about this game. Of course you're going to make some switches for ubertrist, but there is a lot more to the game than running that. My post was a proposal for a versatile character able to take on many situations effectively. If you're just worried about ubertrist, become a smiter and that will be the end of it. When people try to improve on ideas they all end up going back to the same old crap. I bet my proposal would be a lot more interesting to do than some cookiecutter build.

I guess I'll go with the vanq. Being a hammerdin, how do they leech life/mana? Also, is there a cap for the amount of damage the hammers can do?

In my opinion there is no point going for zeal at all. BH>Zeal for baal runs. Smite doesnt even have to be maxed as Crushing Blow will do most of the damage.

Since your going with a Vanquisher i recommend you hit the 75Fcr BP and at least 7Fpa for smiter. Hammerdins cant leech, you either to use redemption or pots.

Thanks, I'm pretty familiar with the smiter, but still need more help with a hammerdin. How do you people deal with the blindspots of the hammers? Is it best to combine the hammers with teleport? Is there a cap on the damage of the hammers? Sorry if they are common questions, but I have already searched the forums and could not find anything.

Sorry, don't know how to edit my post. I also want to know what's the best merc to use with a hammerdin.

For a merc choose between either a HF or Defiance merc. To deal with blindspots, just spam a little then move. Spam again, rinse and repeat. Ideally you'll want to use enigma so teleport will be handy for the blindspot situations as well. Lastly there is no real cap but it depends on the +skills you can get, however there is maximum amount of +skills you can get which in effect, caps the BH damage.
