thats pretty nice. ive been having a hard time making it through the pits with any of my characters so its been troublesome to me. but im glad you managed to find something good.
Hell Pit run only good on 8playergame?

Just to give you my build (if it helps any) I'm lvl86 sorc with maxed blizzard (maxed GS synergy)+lvl 21 (w/ +skills) to CM and fire ball (almost maxed meteor synergy) not sure what my FM is at. I use HF merc from act2 NM. I tend to be able to survive ok... and I run exclusively on my MF switch through there. Every now and then I get careless and get swarmed and when an LE pops I'm toast.
Just take your time and go through slowly. Push comes to shove I get my bestest buddy (merc) out there and let him kill everything with me playing the dmg add role.

My hammerdin loved the pits, on average I was in 4 player games and I found something worth more than a couple of perfect gems every....... 15 runs I'd say.
How to stay in Hell Act 1 and still get rich :
1) Character choice : Summon necro with maxed skelly/mages/skelly mastery/CE
2) Areas of interest:
a) Pits (Area lvl 85)
b) Mausoleum (Ditto)
c) Crypt (Area lvl 83)
3) Pick up every flawless gem and cube them
4) Go runes hunting on Countess ^^
The previous posts had very valid points- i mf solo but do quick and lots of runs ^^ In any case high runes are a joke these days and i took a few hours to slot out my rare breast plate for an enigma lol So far juicy results hehe Cheers and hope i helped!
p.s If your might merc still has a crappy weapon use Life Tap for massive leech or Dim Vision if there are those nasty fanaticism enchanted ranged attacking packs
