Hal's 1.10 Conc Build Guide (Updated Edition)

My barbarian is finally underway, and I'm just wondering about a few things.

One thing I always make sure I look at at any character setup is what my endgame hotkeys are going to be. Obviously the staple hotkeys for barbarians include your Battle Command, Battle Orders, as well as Shout in this case. Obviously, I'm going to have Concentrate hotkey'd in my left click, as well as Beserk (which I plan on maxing once my "Big Four" are done, as you call them -- I love the feeling of dealing out massive magic damage).

So the way I keep looking at it, this means I've got 3 hotkeys left (I only use F1-F8, and I don't know if you can do it any other way -- if there is, I'd probably still only use those 8 keys). I'm looking at my barbarian skill tree on my other computer right now, and there are 5 skills which I've got to fit into 3 hotkeys: War Cry, Battle Cry, Howl, Taunt, and Grim Ward. I like the idea of having Grim Ward as one of them for emergencies; I really like the idea of what you said about setting up perimeters and whatever, it sounds great. I'll experiment. Anywho, the way you explained it, it leads me to believe that you think Howl and Taunt are much more valuable to a barbarian than War Cry or Battle Cry would be. I'm just asking this because I'm unsure, since the skills, on paper, look like they would be doing the same thing.

Howl seems a lot like Grim Ward as well; only Grim Ward seems a heck of a lot more useful, thanks to it's "trapping" devices you can use, as well as it's much longer duration at slvl 1. War Cry is the only one of these 5 that stuns a creature, which is invaluable to any build, and Battle Cry and Taunt also seem to do the same thing; lower enemy damage, as well as allowing you to get hit less/hit the enemy more.

Again, if you've explained this already: my sincerest apologies. :hanky:

Aye, I believe I listed my hotkey set-up a few pages back. You should have plenty of keys, overall, with F1-12 and such. I have the three main warcries macroed, along with warcry, taunt, howl, and battlecry on F9-12, and tele/conc/berserk on F1-3. I have a few others, but I'm away from the game system right now, so I can't check them for sure.

-Hal

I had no idea that F9-F12 were usable for Hotkeys. I thought I had tried them before. Or do you have to go to your control configuration and make them so you can hotkey them?

And by macroed, you mean always have them there?

Just a personal question, but in comparison to Howl and Taunt, how often do you use War Cry and Battle Cry?

Battle cry and war cry are not subsitute cries for taunt and howl. They all have their individual purposes:

howl: personally, with maxed resists and 50%dr, I don't find a need for howl. Even in those extra tough situations... I just use a potion, seeing as I don't hardly ever use potions.

taunt: Taunt on the other hand is VERY useful to me, not for dr or whatever, but for its ability to attract ppl to me.

battle cry: Battle cry is very usefull, however... I have a pair of dracul's gloves with lifetap on them, my merc uses reaper's toll as a weapon with decrepify, between those two curses, of which one is pretty much always cast, battle cry is completely useless. If you don't have an item with ctc decrepify, then battle cry is for you as it does the same thing without slowing the enemy down.

war cry: as hal has mentioned somewhere in this thread, he's tried a barb with 5 into war cry 15 into iron skin and has liked it very much. I too love this skill. However, like howl, its use for me is minimal, but I would use this over howl every day of the week.

F9-12 were automatically responsive as hotkeys on my system. As for the cries, I use them all in specific scenarios. Howl and Taunt are my main crowd control tools, I use them to handle massive groups. I probably use taunt the most, as it completely screws up ranged attackers and gloams. Battle Cry is reserved mainly for boss encouters, or cows and such...groups with lots of damage and lots of HP. Warcry is just somethign I've been messing around with, that I use pretty much exclusively against ITD enemies, though it does get some use in general play. Taunt is my favorite though.

Ive just read the guide for the first time and I just have to say, good job Hal!
I have been following through your guide pretty well and I have run into one problem...I have made it into nightmare somehow on these stats and its getting a little tough

http://www.villagephotos.com/viewpubimage.asp?id_=8764578

As you can see in that image.. I have no idea what to do with my crap load of stat points left.. and my pretty low damage (current axe is like 20-30 somethin). If you guys could suggest what I do with all of them, it would be greatly appreciated, because right now I don't know if I should add vitality, strength, or dex. (I am going for the axe/shield combo conc barb)

-Thanks!

Well, the first thing I would do would be to invest in dex until you max out your blocking, and then I'd go back and start pumping some vit. You're going to need a lot more vit in general. Str is something you might consider a few points in, based on what kind of gear you think you'll be using throughout your career...it's ok to overpump it a bit on your first fet iterations of the barb, and just rebuild a perfect version once you have all of your endgame gear collected.

Barbarian is going well, but I'm not quite impressed with the damage output. Like you said, Hal, Doombringer wasn't going to give me outstanding results in the damage category. While using it with Stormshield, I've got about 800-1700 Concentrate damage. I've maxed Battle Orders and almost done maxing Concentrate, and the boost Conc gives each level isn't that big.

I might just go for 10-fpa Conc and instead of socketing a few of my items with IAS, socket them with ED jewels. Albeit that I haven't put *any* points into *any* mastery yet, because I'm not final about my decision, the damage isn't great. I'd personally rather not go for a runeword because I don't want it getting deleted or something, so I've got to find alternates. You mentioned Death Cleaver, Stormlash and Nord's. Is The Grandfather a good choice? How about Azurewrath for some good elemental bonuses and attribute bonuses?

The one thing I do like about Doom though, is the huge +40% boost to AR it has, couped with life leech and +20% Maximum Life.

Grandfather is alright and all, but the big problem with it is the lack of any ias, which makes it a bit harder to get to one of the decent breaks (10 or 9). It needs 89% to get to 10...even with IAS gloves and amulet, you'd need another 49, which is a bit of a stretch without sacrificing quality gear spots.

Azurewrath is alright as well, but the low physical damage makes it lag behind as well...nothing there for the conc/mastery ed to capitalize on. That's one of the reasons I'm not too up on swords; they have some fast ones, and some hard hitting ones, but they don't have one that's a great balance of speed and damage in the uniques.

-Hal

*nods head*

I'll have to go get a Death Cleaver and compare results. That Deadly Strike would be nice, too. More ED jewels, less IAS jewels in equipment! And maybe try Cranebreak.

Halciet:

I am also quite the perfectionist when it comes to gaming. When buidling my Conc Barb, I minimized his stats to max out with certian items too (i.e. 81 str, 132 dex, rest in vit). He's built totally to specifications and I took the bash variant. I am also trying to reach 9fps with 125+ ias. This limits the gear I can alternate quite significantly since certian slots must be filled:

BoTD Zerk
Enigma
Arreats with 40/15
SS with 40/15
Verdungos 40/15
20%ias gloves
P raven frost
Highlords

This leaves me with a ring/boots slot available. And that is where I'm stumped. I've noticed in previous posts you've mentioned using BK ring, and then recently another P raven...and on boots im totally in the dark. Also, do you have any other ideas for gear? I would really appreciate any input.

Nope, that's pretty much it chief. A praven is probably your best bet, since you can squeeze another 20 vit out of it, unless you have a really nice dual stat rare ring or such. Bootwise, you can go with either travs or gores...both kill at about the same speed. Gores are much better for pvp, of course, with all the Open Wounds and such. I've been using travs a lot lately, just for the sake of testing out the Werebear Hypothesis (where in they've decided that war travs are better for a werebear, which, when you think about it, is virtually the same engine as the conc barb).

Sorry to ask again; but do you have screenshots or data of damage comparison between the items you suggested: Death Cleaver, Stormlash, BoTD, etc. in comparison with stuff that you don't quite praise as high as mace/axes like GF, Doom. If you have it handy, cool. If not, was just wondering.

Nah, I only took pics of an example of the conc barb with optimal gear, an example of a whirlbarb with optimal gear, and an example of an IK whirl barb with optimal gear. Didn't bother rolling up the other weapons for screens.

Mf'ing with the conc-barb

Hi guys and Mr. Halciet

I'm quite new to barbarians in 1.10 but have taken a char to lvl 71 hc ladder. I wanna be able to mf as I took a break recently and have lost my accounts. My question is whether the conc-build will be good at boss-runs or if a zerker would do the job better?

I have a 297% ccb and a deathcleaver 235%. Will that axe be good enough for hell or do I need some heavier firepower for mf'ing bosses?

After the great guide and debate following I guess I would prefer axemastery but is that viable if I wanna do the killing blow with dual ali-babas? Of course I can put 1 click in swordmastery but will that be enough or will my ar be too low?

Guess as a mf-build I could get both zerk and conc if I go to high lvls but is that nescessary? Should I just do a pure zerker instead to do meph?

Thx alot everyone

Just for pete's sake (don't know if this has been done before) but I'll finishing getting all the skills maxed for optimum results so I can do a comparison.

For sure, I will compare the two weapons of Death Cleaver vs. Doombringer, because in my mind after seeing these two weapons and their killing potential (so far through Hell) these are the two optimal sword/axe weapons (and forget runewords; there are too many runewords which utterly decimate any unique in the game, with one exception in my mind).

I think as a third comparison, I might add in the testing of Stormlash as well, just so I can see the additions of each of the three top masteries, Mace/Axe/Sword.

Great Build :)

Heya i decided to make a conc barb a couple weeks ago in single player since that where i play the most. He worked out wonderfully and just beat Hell diff last week and is lvl 81 now. i used a 2 handed axe most of the time then a axe / shield combo in the tight spots that i got hit a lot. I didnt really even use a shield till i hit Acients in Hell and then baal's Minnions. Just like to say again thanks for the great build :). Here are my current items / stats atm

Ethereal Edge Silver Axe w/25% ED jewel
Vampire Gaze
Shaftstop
String of Ears
Mara's Kaleidscope
Raven Frost
a rare ring with all resists, mana leech, AR and some damage.
Gore Rider
and rare guantlets with some resists, 10% ias, and 19 MF

then for the weapon switch a butcher's Pupil and a storm shield.

atm at lvl 181 with the axe i have 171 str 185 dex 171 vit
axes does 2486-4234 damage with conc
have almost 10k AR
and over 10k defence when attacking
then about 2k hps

with the axe /shield combo out...
201 str, 185 dex, 171 vit
845-1658 damage
about 12k defence
2k hps
and almost max resists

for those main items i probobly ahve a bit to much % reduced.. so i'm looking to replace shaftstop with something else and get a better 1 handed axe so i can use stormshield all the time and still not go down too mcuh damage... any ideas?

Well thanks again for the great strat :) has worked rather well

I just upgraded my Bucher's Pupil and it made a huge different... doing about 1500-2300 now with it... also switched back to my MF gear , Stealskul / Skullder's / goldwrap and the Laying of hands for the 350% damage to demons.. with the weapon swithc of ali baba and gull. so with charms i have 450ish MF and i'm killing Hell Mephisto with np at all and it only takes about 2-3 min :)

Now.. back to MFing :)

Onklen:

Sorry for the delay in responding, your post was pushed back a page before I saw it. Conc barbs are fine for mfing and boss-running, since they're sturdy and dependable; the problem is the running part, since while running your defense drops to 0 and block rate drops to 1/3rd. Sorcs make much, much better MFers, just because they move fast and kill large groups of enemies quickly. I have a barb with 858% mf on him with Alis, but he's been retired, since the 500ish sorc just handles business much faster.

As for a mastery, I personally think axe mastery is the best choice, period. Death Cleaver is a superb weapon, though of course an ethereal one with higher ed on it would be better. Still, yours will do great.

-Hal

When I`m done maxing Battle Orders, Concentrate, Shout and a Mastery + the one point skills, do you think it`s a good idea maxing Natural Resistances? I`m REALLY scared of those Oblivion Knights....
