As you mention, the 20 ar and 20 life and nice for obvious reasons, but you're statement that +3 max sucks is very, very far off base. Each charm is multiplied by your damage modifiers; in my case, each one adds 30 to my max damage. 39 x 30 = 1180 max damage added on, which is doubled by deadly and critical strikes. So each charm effectively gives you a good amount of ar, a good amount of damage, and around 40+ life after battle orders. THAT is why people like them so much.

Don't forget that 40/15 ed/max jewels are bugged in armor/helms/shields, and do not apply their damage bonus correctly, which makes them rather shitty, overall =/
