Welcome to my guide.

Today we are looking at Cow King running at version 1.00. (Also works for version 1.01 but who is playing that version, lol).

First let us start with some important facts.

- You can open the cow level indefinitatly on version 1.00

Why is this a good thing? Well unlimited cows + unlimited Cow King! Nuff said here!

- Cow King drops a "Super item drop" after every consistent kill.

What is a "super item drop". An super drop is a guaranteed rare, unique or set drop. This is the same for quest drops on act bosses in any difficulty (exept andariel, DEERP). The actual good thing here is the Cow King doesn't function as quest and as such is not limited to one time but rather an infinite time!

- Cow King drops are truncated.

A discovery made in 2009 and by me personally. The Cow King drops in patterns, just as lower kurast etc. A major difference is the patterns are mapseed related and as such are personal. I explain later why this is expecially usefull.

- Cow King is the most stable source of rares on 1.00

50+% to get a RARE item on 1.00!
If you know how hard it is to get rare items on 1.00 you know this is a great thing. "But how about gamble" gamble results in loads of rares sometimes but is far from stable. Also refreshing the gamble screen on 1.00 is a pain in the butt.

- Cow Kings itempool is limited!

Basically the main sellingpoint of Cow King running. Selected rare armor pieces are easy to hunt here.

Now lets move to some questions you might ask (FAQ)

Why is running in 1.00 usefull compared to other versions what has 1.00 to offer over 1.13c?

Somebody loves to play lod with eni and grief only (insert Treeharls hate).... Oh wait it is actually usefull... How about some 49 res 19 str boots or a 10 fcr ring with a potential of 64 of a single resist! If you're a classic player there are LOTS of usefull items to grab here when it comes to forwarding. Also 1.00 is an experience on its own compared to version 1.07+

Is Cow King 1.00 hell better than 1.06 Lower Kurast Hell running?

Unfortuniatly not... Lower Kurast can be ran under 25 seconds with 6 superchests. This means you get a rare item every 3 runs. With lances and grim helms in the pool of 1.06 Lower Kurast I personally have to say it is the best run for decent prelod items. However Lower kurast doesn't drop Martels, Mage Plates, Ornates and Rings.

I heard it is impossible to get rare amulets from the Cow King is this true?

Yes... You have to gamble those (with a clvl of 84 or higher to get +2 skill amu's) Lances and Grim Helms are impossible aswell and can't be gambled (have a nice day getting those :))

Treeharl you're a noob and I want to gamble my SOJ's + Rare amu's!

Go ahead I guess.... Do note rings are available on Cow Kings item Pool and as such when a ring spawns it has atleast a 20% chance of being unique. However if you have all three unique rings in your stash a rare spawns (I'll expain this below). If you don't want to lose your mapseed you're capped at just one soj. So yes gambling is the best option if you want to mass sojs and rare amu's.

Okay now let us move to the important stuff!

Cow King's drops explained.

Cow King has three scenario's of dropping items.

1. (60%) Dropping a single rare item and a magic item
2. (30%) Dropping an unique item with sometimes a rare item and a magic item
3. (10%) Dropping a set item with sometimes multiple magic items and a magic item

Scenario 1 happens usually and is not really intresting..... Well it actually is, if your item is red it means it is a bad or a terrible pattern. If you hit to many of those reroll your map!

Scenario 2 needs a wall of text. On v1.00 the unique generation is entirely different compared to v1.07+. If an unique item is somehow present in the game a rare with 5 times the durability spawns. When this scenario happens and the unique item is in the game, the unique fails by hitting a rare with 5 times the durability. After that rare is generated the game tries to generate another unique item. If that one fails aigain another rare appears and another call will be made. This goes up to 5 calls. My personal opinion is this is a pretty large oversight in the early development days and influences your rare income from the cow king by 150% when having the sufficient unique items in your stash! On nm and hell when a exeptional item drops in an unique drop it will always fail and another call will be made. THIS MEANS AN ANCIENT SWORD PATTERN IS WAY WAY WAY BETTER AS A LONG WAR BOW PATTERN!!!

Scenario 3 is useless period all set items exept sigon shield are useless on 1.00. The Cow King doesn't even drop that one so don't bother and start a new run. (GG 1.00 gives bad items... Time to hit alt F4! /sarcasm off)

Now the patterns come in to play!

Scenario 1 2 and 3 have the SAME PATTERNS!

For example we are hell cow king running this means our example pattern look like this.
Scenario 1 (Rare) Leather Gloves (magic) Battle hammer (Rare)
Scenario 2 (Unique) no items in stash Leather Gloves (magic) Battle hammer (Rare) Plated Belt (Unique)
Scenario 2 (Unique) bladebuckle and Face of Horror in stash Leather Gloves (magic) Battle hammer (Rare) Plated Belt (Rare) Mask (Rare) Pike (Unique)
Scenario 2 (Unique) bladebuckle and Face of Horror and Tannr Gorerod in stash Leather Gloves (magic) Battle hammer (Rare) Plated Belt (Rare) Mask (Rare) Pike (Rare) Martel de Fer (Rare)
Scenario 3 Leather Gloves (magic) Battle hammer (Magic) Plated Belt (Set)

Total number of patterns (estimated, I am not sure if the total number is random or not)
Normal: 8-10
Nm: 16-22
Hell: 35-55

The big question, what unique should I put in my stash?
First of all you can and should put them also in your inventory and or on your character! If certain items don't require too much space you should always put them in your stash until you know your patterns.

I would put all pieces of armor + nagelring + manald exept the ward in your stash (and exept soj becuz U GIEB SOJ COW KING PLOX???). Don't punt (punt instead of put, best typo of 2016) any unique weapons in your stash by default exept if you're hunting for a 5 times durability rare pike. Only put unique weapons in your stash and inventory if you know ~60% of your mapseed. Knowledge of your mapseed means knowledge about what should I punt in my stash and inventory.

What is a good seed?

A good seed contains all the following!
1. Tristram near the waypoint
2. Cow King near the portal
3. (NM and Hell only) no dreadfull abilities as teleportation and extra fast. THE COW KING ALWAYS SPAWNS WITH THE SAME ABILITIES!

Personal advise: Make an excel file like I did. An example is written below with an example of a pattern match!

The cow kings suffix and affix level is:

31 on normal, which means up to required lvl 23
56 on nm, which means up to required lvl 39 (when calculated 42 but 40-42 don't exist ingame
81 on nm, which means up to required lvl 52 (when calculated 61 but 53-61 don't exist ingame) on hell any prefix or affix can spawn on any items. (Cow King doens't drop amu's which require atleast an ilvl 87+1 for +2 allskills)

even tho sallet is completly trash, ancient axe is the best weapon in 1.00 if im not misunderstood

so running a few times such a pattern will net you probably very fast a 100+ ed one

compared to the aweful speed early game of spears and pikes (act1+2 can be a pain) the first barb (like in your guide) should be axe master, while the second can be a spear master or pole master (partizan is the 2nd best compared to all others), but spear master can also be usefull with a 125 dura pike, but well, that takes a while.

compare it a little to farming mephisto for the standardunis compared to tc 83 areas where anything can drop but rarely

if you luck out a good ancient axe at fara (with 16!! imbues that shouldnt be hard till nightmare) i agree, you can just forget this pattern (in case you are not an axe fetishist)
@d2fan It possibly is but when forwarding to 1.06 and 1.09 assuming we play classic I would far rather have a Martel Pattern or a Battle Hammer pattern. A 5 times durability pike is possibly the best option if you want to use the same barb on 1.06 at a later timestamp. Ancient Axes are a bit of a one trick pony, need heavy skill and stat investment. Also the fact that War Axes and Naga's are of limited use in 1.00 makes pikes imo much much more versatle. Also Pikes seem to be much more common as Ancient Axes making them very situational indeed.
I have only read the first few lines, and already I can say: Awesome job!

The reason I didn't read the whole thing just yet, is that you mentioned act bosses (except andariel) work the same way. Does this mean that you'd get a BUNCH of rares from the remaining three act bosses if you were to mule on every unique onto 7 mules, join a self-MP game with them, and finish the game the old fashioned way? Or leveling one mule just barely so it could equip items to kill the act bosses, and just plain rush them? That could make for some very interesting HF rushing for later use in LoD?

EDIT: With regard to best weapon discussion, for first character, IMHO Pikes win easily because of range and low requirements, BUT! You need to spend 1 point in another mastery to get the character to lvl 30. If you're going after +2 all rare amulets, this is not a biggie at all; my pike barb is lvl 87 and has no idea where to put spare stats/skills.

@Treeharl Is English your first language? Yeah, I'm one of those grammar noobs =)
I guess it does indeed, but your mule needs the quest and your main character needs to complete the quest in order to get a quest drop. That means if you have the ÿou cannot complete the quest in your questlog due to your mule hosting the game you get a questdrop without completing the quest indeed and yes the drops work the same way.
I'll link this in my 1.00 guide pronto. Very useful, and I'm so glad you did this research and shared it with the rest of us =)
even tho the requirements are insane(and the dmg lol nvm), i'd like to try a grimscythe barb for the funs, did you see a grimscythe pattern?
Grim Scythes are indeed available, but I'd cross my fingers for -40% requirements on those....
Thanks for all the replies! Glad my information is of any use!

There are however still some marginal points unclear to me at this time.
- Duplicate rares and duplicate rare ratio (I guess it is or 16 or 256 or 65536 different of each of the rares on the seed total, if duplication occurs)
- Does walking in another direction change your mapseed and your pattern or not?
- Does dying alter the mapseed or not?
- The exact total number of patterns on each difficiulty (and the question if the total number is random or not)
the question that arises for me, how are you going to have a game open all time?

can vm freeze a lan game?
You run multiple instances via the modified .dll which is included with the latest edition of the bliss version switcher. Just leave a guy in there, open another instance, profit.
Time to give normal Cow King yet another test. After 60 runs my hell seed seems a bit too weak...
yeah you run multiple instances, but you cant have like 10k runs, that would take maybe 4 days or what?

4 days in which nothing has to happen to your pc, ;)

thats why i asked if you can freeze a langame in a vm
Take my advise and don't bother with multiple instances when it comes to Cow King running as that will ruin the truncation and screw your fast item chain over and over aigain... Look at the itemfind thread how rediculous the truncation can get... Or just at this screenshot ^^

@Treeharl say when he finally drops the unique Milk ;)
O.M.F.G. what a pattern! Needs to have the long war bow in stash, but the rings are small and the unique boots I actually use since they're not terrible. 2 rare rings and 2 rare boots every 10th run? Sign me up!

Well that is what I thought aswell, but it seems some patterns are more common as other patterns, the pattern shown is unfortuniatly a rare one. Never the less, I have 3!!! different patterns with a ring on them with two direct rings (rare patterns give a rare ring instead of the unique pattern only)!

My full normal seed (100 runs done)
4.jpg
Another 100 runs done and logged and another ~50 unlogged...

Confirmed the following

1. Walking different directions, like going too far away from the portal etc changes your mapseed.
2. Some patterns are more rare as others
3. It is very likely normal is capped at 9 patterns when ran propperly
4. The chance of hitting a selected pattern is a static algorititm

As my inventory is full now and I have something to attend to (pmed Helvete and Thyiad about that) I have to end my amazing normal mapseed here and prepare aigain for hell runs!

PS: 45 rare rings found 45 crap :D

Thanks for the guide, now i got a nice RED bonehelm, 59 life 14 lr/5cr/27pr/1 mdr (yeah not imba, but red :p )

a shame that the color of the affix doesnt get shown in <1.07, but maybe i make a c-sorc somewhere later :)
I found a set drop from Cow King hell.... Well not quite ^_^! First time no set appears on a set drop. Note a Martel and 2x BH on my fresh Hell Cow King seed (hit this pattern twice in 10 runs so it is a common one, grin). Now hopefully when I get a Tannr Gorerod I can truncate this pattern to get a 30x martel for 1.09 classic!

how much ed has bonesnap btw?

i have one in 1.06, and the max dmg of a maul is 40, but the unique has 123 max, so it has 20x% ed? (or is it a real unlucky roll and can get 300?)
why does d2 crash if some char tries to join a game of my highlevel barb?

can i circumvent this bug, by opening the game with the mule?
hmm that is weird.... I have no idea what is causing it, do you have problems with your RAM or with your compatebility?

It might be a firewall issue aswell.
it has nothing to do with my pc, just try, open a game with a char that finished nightmare and join with a fresh char, try to pick up some gems or the like (or anything)

the game of the low char will most likely crash, its even documented in the patchlog of 1.01

the workaround is, open a game always with a "new" char, i.e. no finished norm, and if you want supersafe, just use tradescreen

lost a triple dura ancint axe that way (it had not great ed so..)
Thanks for telling me, so your workarround is letting the mules trade with eachother? Seems like an ordenary data overflow due to limited coding on 1.00. Tell me if it happens on the trade screen.
well, my idea with the tradescreen is, that the game safes the second you click accept, BUT, that i have to investigate, was jsut too lazy^^

in later versions theres the /safe command, but not here..

can you replicate the bug?

also just for lulz: if you BO directly on the wp, you dont "loose" life, only mana
I can't shake the feeling that what the Cow King drops has to do with what exact spot he dies in. Any way we could test this? WW barb has too much range and moves around too much to reliably get the positioning right.

IF this is the case, you could potentially farm 50 sojs per map in a day....
Bone Necro viable in 1.00? Seems Prison would be the easiest way to get him in a specific spot.
That or spawning a sturdy minion (valk? no idea) right beside king in a certain spot. Prison is probably the easiest though since it gives you some room for timing errors (his movement will be limited but as long as you place the prison in the same position he should run into the same wall every time)
Does TK have the KB effect, and does it work? Could probably push him into a corner with TK, but that would require actual MP to get the kill in.... Or (ghasp) hire a merc! Maybe Hydra + TK.

I can't think of a way to accomplish this with my WW barb, at least.
can you kill his minions then bask him into a corner?
Death location definitely matters. Tested by running around 200 times, getting the same patterns, then luring him off to the side a good screen, and getting completely different patterns.

This could mean that a good map is as simple as the shortest distance to travincal/king and the fewest nearby cows.
Any idea how big the area is? ~player screen area or larger?
Hope you have screenies so you can figure that out.

From the images by Treeharl in the second post, I'd estimate the corpses are within 50 pixels of eachother in the XY axes
Probably best tested by giving 10k+ life to a paladin and max thorns. Then just stand around in different places on a map where the kings position is known, and preferably close to the entrance.

I'd make some screens if my map was reliable enough and my time wasn't so limited. I kinda got to the stage where I can get him to drop a pike on average every other run, or I can make him drop a bone helm every single run, but I want a better weapon a LOT more than I want a better helm.
best helm is uni bonehelm anyways

good luck^^
Not for a sorc, which is why I still ID all rare helms and armors.
Actually, though this is mostly true I have seen on my current map cow king spawn as aura enchanted twice (I checked it was King and not another cow) so under rare circumstances his abilities will vary.

edit: proof. I think this is only the second time out of ~15 million exp?

edit 2: In the last 40 or so runs, I got an aura again 5 times I think. Maybe unusual luck or there's some other factor involved that built up after a few days. Oh well, moving on from that map now

He'll always spawn with the same abilities *on the same map*, although if one is an aura, the aura will vary. However, he can still spawn teleport.
I know, those runs were all on the same map. I used read-only to mule off about 8 times but I'm certain it was the same map
I'm still working through understanding the drop patterns and I'm averaging about 3 hours of sleep per night so please bare with me if this is an ignorant question. I spawned a map with the Tristram portal immediately to the right of the Stony Field WP. The Cow King is three screens up from the cow portal. I've ran it 10 times so far. I only had about 30 minutes this morning so that's all I was able to do. This netted me one unique ring (manald), two set rings, three rare rings, a unique war axe and a rare great sword. Only one item is dropping at a time not counting the magic item. Each unique/set/rare is dropping with only one magic item. I did have multiple magics fall with one set ring.

Is this a good map to keep hunting for my first Stone of Jordan? Normally I wouldn't ask something that is so subjective but my time is extremely limited and I'm trying to make the most progress I can.
This is a good map for SoJ, AND don't forget that rare rings can be incredibly strong, far stronger than expansion rares. I'd run that map until I started getting rare rings with identical stats.

The reason the set ring spawned with multiple magic items is that your map has more than one drop pattern which includes a ring.

You should do a screenshot of the next set ring which drops with multiple magics, and then remember to keep the unique version of those items in stash/inventory. This will force SoJ (or a rare ring) whenever the king decides for unique quality, and that drop pattern.
The good news is that I did get my first Stone of Jordan. The bad news is that I did not run the map repeatedly like you said. I got excited and muled it off without even thinking about what would happen to the map. Sometimes I get a little ahead of myself.
Well, the further good news is that you learned something. Also, remember to write-protect the .d2s file when muling off. You can't mule stuff back on this way, but it'll let you keep the map.

Running with a sorc or with a barb? If barb, WW is pretty much so strong that you can just equip most of the uniques the Cow King can drop, especially in normal. If you go with:
- Silks
- Wormskull
- Bladebuckle
- Tannr Gorerod (or whatever is appropriate for the mastery you've chosen)
- Frostburns
- Tearhaunch
- Nagel + Manald

This setup, although weaker than using rares, will save a whopping 30 inventory/stash spaces. Which means you can stash the other two unique helms, the other two armors, and a weapon or two, and you'll be seeing a LOT of multiple rare drops.
I'm using a WW barb. I'm still working on accumulating all the uniques. I don't have Silks, Worm or Frostburns yet.
You will, with repeated king runs. Just substitute another of the unique armors/helms he can drop for the time being.
