Good char to start?

I decided to try playing on Battlenet, and i want to play hadrcore, what char should i choose?
I played D2 for some time but on single player only. I have SOME expirence, but for most of forum users i will be total noob;) I got on single player my Meteorb to early Hell, Skeleton Necro to early Nightmare, and I played a little with Barb, so theese are chars with which i have some expirence & like to play. Of course you can say "try assasin" and i will, but not knowing char can be dangerous too:tongue:
Amazon is the char i realy wouldnt like to play.

I would like you to tell me what char i should choose and what build, if i want to be able to play solo (habit from single player) & to be quite slow to kill at early levels, i mean not unkillable but i got lags & dont want to start new char every 2 days. I'd like to play already without too much fear at lets say ~30lvl

I already tried necro (got it to 12 lvl:P) and he is quite hard to kill, while hiding behind skeletons and that bone armor skill (dont know english name for it) Is it good bet for first HC char?

And if you decide to reply, i beg you dont spam me with too much acronyms, i just dont understand the most of them yet;) and even if I use some faq, still some english names are completly different from those translated in my version of game (i use polish version), and also remember i am completly new to battle net, so no chance i get any good set soon:P

And if you want to say "noobs shouldnt play HC" save it, i decided hc is much more interesting

Thanks for all (if any:P) replies

Re: Good char to start?

Noobs shouldn't play HC.

I'd build a trap assassin. It's one of my favorite characters to play, and it works on cheap/vendor bought gear.

Re: Good char to start?

Meteor/Orb can do fine if you are comfortable with it and she can magic find for you, btu a Skeleton Necro is a good safe bet also, and it is "bone armor" in English and that is indeed a solid skill.

Re: Good char to start?

I think this is hands down above and beyond the best welcome to hardcore mode char you can pick

The Hardcore FAQ

3.1 What should my first character be?

This is perhaps the most controversial question in the FAQ, with no real correct answer and no real agreement either by the forum members. Instead of providing a detailed guide based on one character, what I've attempted to do is provide a few general hints and tips on making your first Hardcore character, and how to go about choosing what type it will be.

Generally, the best character to make as your first Hardcore character is one that you are most familiar with. If you've had lots of experience on playing a particular character class or type, then that is what is most important. Prior experience will stand you in good stead. However, this must be balanced with the fact that when you first start Hardcore, you have no items to your name. Therefore, you want a character that you know how to use, and one that can kill effectively without being overly dependent on items. Basically, what you are aiming for is to get to act 5 normal alive and well. Once you get there, you can hit the normal baal runs, up until level 40 or more if you want. You will also be able to start finding decent items with which to equip your new characters.
Possible builds that the forum has suggested would make excellent starting HC characters:
- Lightning Trap Assassin
- Summoner Necromancer
- Lightning Fury Amazon
- Orb Sorceress (or possibly Meteorb - see the sorceress forum for more details on sorceress variations)
- Blessed Hammer Paladin (aka Hammerdin)

The most important considerations for your first character should be, in this order - Life, Resists, Damage, Defence and Attack Rating (if melee).
Important attributes to look for on your character should be mana/life leech (melee chars only), +mana/energy (spellcasters only), as well as anything with good resists.
If you are having trouble reaching Act 5, consider trying out a shapeshifting druid or a barbarian, both of whom benefit from having lots of life, far more than most other characters. This gives you a greater chance of survival and the ability to get yourself out of difficult situations without as much fear of dying.
Once you feel you've got the hang of Hardcore, feel free to experiment with new characters and builds. Above all, have fun! This is a great game, and Hardcore is undoubtedly one of the most fun experiences you can have in it.

Re: Good char to start?

hmm i must say that titan sorc sounds crazy.. and i like it:P i think i will try it at least for first 10 deaths :P

Re: Good char to start?

Go for it. Get those first 10 out of the way so you learn it isn't the end of the world

Re: Good char to start?

Basically any character is playable, as your first hardcore character.

Some are "easier" than others, but learning the ways of the game is much more important than being a powerhouse.

If you want to make a summon necromancer, that's cool. They're very fun and very durable. They don't require much gear, they are lag-resistant (if you lag, your minions can usually clear the enemies or slow them down in time for you to discover the problem and bail).

Barbarians are pretty good. Being on the front lines isn't so bad when you have tons of hitpoints. You have to be careful about stat allocation, though. Too much strength leads you with not enough hps (hit points) ---> you die. Not enough strength ---> bad gear ---> you die.

I'd recommend that whatever character class you choose, levels 1-10 you should put nothing but vitality. From then on, every level, put at least 1 point in vitality (usually you put three to five). The extra hps help more than a few extra gear pieces could.

#1 cause of Player vs. Monster death from people new to HC: They don't use potions because they're afraid to waste them. Use potions. They're basically free. Have at least one row of health pots so you don't have to blow full rejuvs to top yourself off.

#2 cause of death: Going too fast. Take your time. When you spot a boss, back up and ID the boss's mods before proceeding. If you stay on your toes with potions, you should only die if you get surrounded or run into an extremely nasty boss pack (cursed, extra strong, extra fast, aura enchanted, etc.). Even if you see an extremely nasty boss pack, there's plenty of time to back up, spread the pack out and pick it apart slowly.

#2.5 cause of death: Speaking of "running" into a dangerous boss pack. Running during combat. Running drops your armor to zero and your chance to block to 1/3rd. Instead, you should walk while fighting if there are enemies trying to hit you. If you have a max block build, running could instantly quadruple or more the damage you're taking.

#3 cause of PvM (Player vs. Monster) death from people new to HC: Not enough vitality. Vit is the only stat worth getting. There are many character builds and stuff that ONLY put points into vit (no strength, no dex). Under no circumstances should you put points into energy (ES sorces are not for new players). Every extra point should go into vit or into dex until you have max block.

#4 cause of death: You don't leave the game. If things get dicey, lag, etc. Alt+f4. Don't ask questions. You can always resummon your skeletons, always fight back through the area (you get more exp that way, anyway). You can always remake your character, but that takes a lot longer :-P.

I also have to talk about TPPK. Sorry for the lecture, but it's now an unavoidable part of Diablo II online.

I don't recommend Baal runs. Public Baals, there's a tppk (town portal player kill) attempt about every other game. Err, tppk is a hack (99% of the time, it's a hack, some people will point out that if you're extremely fast, you can do it without a hack, but it's still an exploit). They cast a spell in your direction, then make a town portal, go in it, and declare hostility against you. Because of a bug in the gameplay, the spell they cast before going in the portal still exists, and it's now "hostile" to you. The people using this exploit build their characters around knowing this, and their single spell WILL kill your character. Level 45 Sorces can cast Ice Bolt that does close to a thousand PvP damage and is unresistable. And any even low level character, with an Enchant (from a high level sorceress, this boosts their damage) could deliver this fatal attack.

I want to point out that with the hacks, this happens virtually instantly, without warning, and most every character class can do it in some form or another. Even melee characters like Barbs or Paladins could have been enchanted by high level friends, switch to a bow, and kill you faster than your screen can display the incoming missile (let alone before your synapses can comprehend your impending doom).

Not to scare you out of playing hardcore legit (which is the only way to play Diablo II), but if you play in public games, and you aren't running hacks of your own, you will be killed by this method at some point or another. I've seen level 12s kill level 70s with tppks. I've seen level 90s kill level 18s in normal cows.

You can even be killed while in town via some methods, btw. Stay well away from the town entrances.

Yes, it's totally lame.

My advice is only group with people from this site or people that they vouch for. Even then you run some risk (I heard there was a tppk attempt from the xbananax channel), but most people on this site are pretty good, knowledgable, and non-lethal. If you get suspicious, leave.

If you're on USWest, you should switch to USEast. Seriously, USEast is about twice to three times more active. If you're on USEast, I can hook you up with starting gear or even just 10k gold and some luck.

If you're on Europe, stay there. It's pretty active.

Re: Good char to start?

One viable choise as starting characteer is shapeshifting druid. Basicly you max lycantrophy and oak sage and some offensive skill, fire claws is good. You can MASSIVE life as long as you put majority of statpoints to vitality. I had about 2.5k life at level 45, untwinked. A random level 75 sorc tried to tppk me in Baalrun with iceblast. After it barely hurt me, she was like WTF .
