Fighting the WOW craze

I've been fighting the wow bug for a while now. But it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I mean it is soaking up a lot of the market. A game like D3 needs to come along to nock it off it's horse. Or does it? My question is... Is it possible/sacrilage to be a diablo fan and a wow fan, let alone the time involved in playing both games. Is wow worth the play to play? Is this game a danger to the success of D3? I don't think so seeing as the same company made both of them. And Is D3 the end of WOW in terms of the continuos patches/updates etc. What are the monthly dues at right now btw? Thanks anyone who plays or has played both, your oppinion is appreciated. Well all opps are actually.

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

Wow is worth the money to pay to play ...but it's a completely different animal than DII is, in fact as someone who comes into WoW from being used to DII, it's a bit of a difficult transition to get into. Especially the game mechanics and the fact that The game itself is not as soloable as DII is. Yes you can solo stuff, some classes are better at this than others. But the instances(WoW's equivalent of DII Dungeons) are never soloable at then level they are intended for. Also as far as combat goes, you will never be able to solo groups of monsters (same level or relatively same level as you) the way you can in DII. Things work completely different.

When playing WoW as a beginner after playing DII (or any other game for some time) try to pick a server that a friend is on, or someone you know from off a forum. Get into a decent guild. Big help here over playing solo.

I cannot stress this last point enough: ASK FOR HELP. Ask in general chat, ask guild, ask friends for pointers and for help with quests. Dont take a bad party or bad group as a representation of the who of the people playing. It's a learning process.

Lastly, UI mods. No they are not hacks and yes it's worth it to use them.

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

Gorny has expressed it all in his post. I was a wow player for 4.5years, and was even a hardcore raider at one point. The game isnt designed to be played solo, you will get very bored, very quickly, as once your max level (70) all you can do is farm, finish of quests, and solo some low level instances, thats about it, without friends/looking for groups/Guilds the game isnt worth the money to play. I gave up on my wow phaze and I hope to NEVER return to the game, I got to the point where if i wasn't with a guild/friends doing things, I got too bored.

UI Mods is just changing the appearing of your GUI and bars and things, so they are not hacks, though there are banned ones, and yes you should use them!
its about £9 a month atm, or £18.50 every 2 months with a gamecard.

Diablo 2 is better is that its all soloable as well as being ALOT of fun when your with a good bunch of people.

Final Note: The learning curve on WoW is huge, unless youve played it before, because theres alot youve got to learn the way your class works, the way you build it, the way you equip it and they way you play it,for Example, Hunter, easiest class to play, hardest to play well. If you ever need any advice jsut ask myself or Gorny, (havnt played in a good 6months though however),

One advantage now is after the latest patch you get to have your mount at level 30 instead of the old 40!and its alot cheaper now as well!

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

i played WoW for a year and solo'ed a few horde classes (shaman, hunter, warrior) up to 70 and then finally realized that MMOs are essentially a second job except i am paying blizzard money to do the job

that was the point at which i went back to D2 and other less grind-8-hours-a-day games

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

you mean WoW ? if you only play an hour a day it will take forever to get anything worthwhile done and you can forget about doing higher level dungeons which usually take a half hour or more just to setup the group (no one wants to play tanks or healers)

edit: does that apprentice riding training at level 30 give the same 60% speed bonus as the old training at 40 ? can you actually buy a cheap mount at level 30 after learning the training ?

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

Is this a game you can play if you only have say... An hour a day to play?

Yes, you can play only an hour a day but to really get something out of it you need more than an hour at times ... more than an hour can mean an hour and a half or two to four depending on what you are doing. Even casual instance take more than an hour.

You may want to skip playing an hour a day here and there and put in two or three here and there.

This does not count time taken to actually form said group for an instance...like Omikron pointed out. And yeah same 60% speed bonus for level 30 mounts. Nothing changed with the speed of them, you just get them 10 levels earlir and they cost less.

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

"Succumb to the icy chill of death!"

Don't. Unless you know you can keep it casual, max. a few hours a day. I played for 2 years, nearly exactly to date 2 years. During those 2 years I had spent 180 DAYS ingame. That's 180x24 hours, and roughly translates to 6 hours a day. I raided, I raided a lot. I beat everything there was to beat in the game at the time (quit before Sunwell released), and then quite honestly burned out and quit, got my account banned by *cough* "being offensive" so that I'd never return, and broke my discs.

Did it help?

No. I recently bought it again. I've managed to keep it down to an hour a day or so now, but I'm afraid that when Lich King hits the shelves and I'll be max levelled again, I'll fall into the raiding scheme again. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 4 hours of raiding each day + the time for reputation grinds + the time for consumable grinds + the time spent ganking / otherwise PvP'ing... ugh. Just don't.

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

I don't think WoW and Diablo are really comparable. The only similarity is that they're made by the same company. In WoW, every fight against a 2-3 of mobs is a big deal, where in Diablo it usually isn't a big deal unless you can get 30 or more mobs involved in the fight. In WoW, the best items are obtained by hours and hours of grind, while the best items in D2 are earned by traders.

I don't think WoW and D3 will hurt each other much in terms of player base. At least, not any more than comparing them to any other game. The games are so different that they attract completely different playstyles and people.

Re: Fighting the WOW craze

I'd say WoW is more addictive game, since it really requires lot of time (example raid instances/instances takes many many hours to complete, even finding party to instances takes hours if your unlucky). I played WoW for a year and gotta admit it took too much time and thats why I switched to Diablo II. I agree with Digdug, I dont think WoW and D3 will hurt themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if there would come another expansion after WotLk (lvl 90 level cap ehh? maybe even 100!!! horrible -_-). Why I like Diablo II is that items can be traded (not spending many hours in instances, imagine those wow players getting t6 items in 25 player instance, many ppl try get one item for many weeks/months), still Diablo II is also some grinding but takes less time. There are downhills and uphills between D2 and WoW.
