Exile and Chance to Hit

Im having difficulties deciding on a shield for my PVP zealot - eth Alma Negra or Exile.

Ive read endless threads and the majority of them have supported the Alma, but Im still leaning towards Exile.

Exile is a defensive shield but personally I think the huge defense boost compensates for the slight difference in damage and AR from the Alma.

Some theory to help me make up my mind (please correct me if my calculations are wrong). Using the chance to hit formula, assuming both characters are level 90, and the attacker has 25K attack rating (I believe this is the optimum figure to aim for):

@ 25K defense, the attacker has 100% chance to hit.
@ 30K def, 90%
@ 35K def, 84%
@ 40K def, 76%
@ 45K def, 72%
@ 50K def, 66%.

There are diminishing returns, for example @ 35K def you will only see a decrease in chance to hit by 6%, whereas @ 30K def theres a 10% decrease.

But this is how I look at it:

Using an Alma Negra I have about 30K def and the attacker has a 90% chance to hit me.
Using an Exile, I have about 45K def and the attacker has a 72% chance to hit me. Essentially switching from Alma to Exile I reduce my attacker's chance to hit me by 18% (and 24% if I manage to reach 50K def). Almost 1/4 of their attacks will miss!

Again if my calculations are wrong please correct me,

Cheers.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Are you dueling in pvp zeal ladder where exiles are allowed? An exile in Pub duels will get you nk'd, bm'd, and trash talked for tapping...

As for chance to hit: you must factor in chance to block...

Zeal doesn't hit very often in pvp vs my 20k defense smiter... He's max holy shield/ block but only 1 point defiance... WW barbs with 22k attack rating have trouble hitting me...

The difference between "chance to hit" at 25k defense and 30k defense is miniscule when 75% of those successful "hits" get blocked...

Taxcut - Im West Ladder but I dont think finding duels would be a problem. There are plenty of zealots on West that would be more than happy to duel an Exile zealot and attempt to prove why using another shield is a better option...

I always believed defense and blocking worked separately? Can someone else confirm this also?

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Your math is all wrong. When attacker's AR = defender's defense and both have the same clvl, chance to hit = 50%.

And cth is always between 5% and 95%.

This may help you.

EDIT

Defense and blocking work as taxcut described. Defense affects the likeliness of being hit, and when the hit-check does pass, blocking comes into play.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Scudstorm - Great, thanks for the link.

Using the calculator: 10% difference in chance to hit by equipping Exile.

Defense and blocking work as taxcut described. Defense affects the likeliness of being hit, and when the hit-check does pass, blocking comes into play.

So defense does play an important role. Basically if the attacker manages to successfully break through my defense then the 75% chance to block kicks in next. Perfect!

Taxcut - Yes the difference between 25K def and 30K def is small, however Im looking more at the comparison between 30K def and 45K def which relates more closely to equipping an Exile and another shield like Alma.

Cheers, thanks for you comments.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Another factor to consider is the effect of -XX% Target defense on a high defense character.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

It's possible to achieve 50k def without exile. It's weird because west ladder zeal tourny doesn't allow exile but allows andy's. I personally hate using andy's, it's ugly as sin and the ctc poison nova hurts if it fires a lot.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

How do you achieve 50K def without Exile? Would it be possible for you to give your gear setup?

Lol I dont like the look of Andys either...

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Only way I know of is by using an ebug Fort or Stone. I highly doubt there's a legitimate way to do it.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Hint: An eth unique helm and an ebug self-repair runeword :)

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

umm gaze wouldnt hurt, its quite common acctually, and ebugged prudance with upwards of 2.5k def is sweet vs barbs.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

eth andy can have up to 580def, while eth sa prudence up to 3645def.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

lol nice, a decent rare 2os corona can have close to 150def more. eth, rep ofc.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

true that, i found a 700 erare but the ed mod was the only good mod...

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Exile is bm in duels. You have no choice but to use up'ed hoz.

Re: Exile and Chance to Hit

Bull$#!*, who decides what's bm anyway? And why isn't Enigma bm then? Oh wait... Using Enigma isn't bm but bad skilled... My bad... :jig:

On topic: just use Exile, it's a great shield.

Not to flip out or anything, but enigma doesn't heal you to ~max health.

Exile's going to be BM if you do anything serious. if pubbing, well, that's pubbing anyway.
