Etdlahq Memorial Bar - your shelter from forum crashes

he is talking about afl (I assume). Which game are you going to corax?

I am personally not a fan of taekwondo, don't really understand the whole no punching thing ...

*cough* Penny Arcade pwns xkcd *cough*

I have great respect for martial artists, they have to be athletic, graceful, and quick-thinking. I just pedal a bike.

Speaking of pedaling a bike, the race was not at all what I thought, but I was happy with my performance anyway. Firstly, despite all the people I've heard talking about it the event itself was tiny. My field was only about a dozen riders, and when spread over a half-mile course it looked like 3 or 4. Oh, and my field was not juniors like I was thinking. See, not enough of the little buggers showed up, and the few who did chickened out. But I was determined to race, so I did the Cat 5 instead.
(Cat 5 is like the lowest level of adult racing, it is supposed to be for people who have only done a certain amount of races, less than 20 I think). I thought that it would be mostly people who hadn't raced much, if at all, and that I would be at a small disadvantage. Instead, almost all of the dudes were from either a local shop team or from Wake's team. I overheard the Wake guys registering, they actually qualified for Cat 3 but were doing the 5 race for fun. Not cool.
Anyway, I almost missed the start and was panicking a bit when we rolled off. I did hold a wheel for two laps, albeit the last wheel, but at about 2 1/2 I couldn't hold the speed and started to drift. I was close until about lap 5 or 6, but a combination of the strong headwind and my blocked gears just killed me. I raced as hard as I could the whole time, and for a while it looked like I might catch up to the last group, but about halfway through I was lapped. I would wind up almost being lapped again before they ran out of road.

But I had tons of fun, and I am thrilled with how I did. Why? The official told me after the race that the group I was racing was the fastest group from last week, faster even than the Cat 1/2 (pros). So I managed to hold them for a while, and it wasn't a total blowout even when I lost the wheels. Compared to the mental image I had of total failure against little kids, I couldn't be happier. I'm not sure I'll be there next time, 25 bucks is a lot to spend on losing, but now my confidence is booming.

Dew please.

nope actual nrl football. i live in townsville so its bsically cowboys or nothing. i think they re going to get suckerpunched by the titans tonight.
Would prefer afl, hell i would of even preferred the fury if they still existed. but whatever. it's free and free beer.

Sigh Taekwondo. yes the video is impressive, what they do is impressive but i will say it again. 90% of taekwondo styles are NOT a martial art. they should fall into a category with say gymnastics rather than actual martial arts. I've trialled a handful of different styles in the ville and fought tonnes of others when i used to compete. I only ever saw one guy make it into state let alone nationals.
Why i hear you say. Simple it has evolved into a big flashy style designed to impress parents so they enroll their kids and it makes money. Hence why you also see a 6year old with a black belt. makes me sad.

Don't get me wrong, some of the old style taekwondo styles do have merit, the guy who made it to states was one and he was pretty good, but for the most part it is to flashy to use against anyone who knows how to fight, whether they are a fellow martial artist, a street fighter of even a boxer.

@PCM: sounds like you did pretty good. and lets face it, atleast you didn't get lapped by children :) that would suck :(

Was there anyone else in cat 5 besides you and the weimeraners who didn't want to race cat 3?

(apparently desperate to collect money they don't need) raised the tax on cigarettes from ~$1.00 to
~$6.00. It's a load of ********!
Actully the tax revenue on cigs has decresed since they did that. And the number of smokers dropped by about 30%. Which was the point, to make it so expensive that people stop doing it. That's why it's called a "sin" tax.
What part is psycological? The need to hold something? try holding a straw instead, if you think that looks too goofy or isn't enough then try an unlit cig. Oral fixation? try a sucker. The need for an excuse for a break at work?
chew gum while you hang out with your buddies/ lounge around outside.

so apparently i'm meant to just carry around 100kg of extra snags on the off chance someone wants some.
Or he just wants extra to put on managers special. There are a bunch of people in my area that won't buy meat if it's not on managers special (near it's use/freeze by date), which is kinda dumb if they skip sales. (Case in point, guy next to me picking up the pack of ground beef for $3.50 a lb when they had it on sale for $2 last week.... AND ignoring the 1 lb organic beef I got for $2 because "oh those small packs always cost more" DUH!)

Huh, 'round here "Nob" is an old way of saying some one was super rich and thought they were/acted like nobility. As in Nob Hill, hob nob, etc.

I found XKCD a little bit ago, it's fun but my fav OL comic is IWC

[rant] Okay, so it's my birthday week, and El's too so I have party prep for this coming Sat. left, right, and center. But last Friday NIGHT the water heater went out. The plumber comes out on Sat. but it needs some special part that we have to get from Whirlpool, and IT will be delivered Tues. So for 4 days I have to heat water on the stove for baths, dishes, anything (so all the chores and things I'd been planning on doing Mon/Tues like laundry have to get put of until my birthday.) Then when the part came in, it wasn't just a little adapter to fix them being idiots about which direction things should srcew in, it was a whole manifold so I have to call the plumber out AGAIN.

And it ends up going another hour, did I mention they charge $187 per hour?
And that Goltar's had his pay cut by 20% until our govenrment can pass the budget that started Oct. 2010 (but at least he still has a job, some other aerospace co's have laid off over 2/3rd of their workers)?

So I'm at the store trying to get as much for as little as I can and as I'm checking out I realize I forgot my wallet, so they hold the order for me while I drive home and back again. In the SNOW. The tulips are blooming and it's snowing, it was 80F last Thurs. And snowing 6 inches the Friday before that. I HATE the weather here..... [/rant]

tldr: our weather sux, our gov sux, and costly things always break when you have no money

@Corax: Those Tae kwon do videos remind me of wrestling. You know, they kind where muscular guys smack talk at each other and then jump around a ring. It's athletic and fun to see. They give a better show than wrestlers I think.

I have to drip antibiotics into my ear which make my throat dry. No good when recovering from a cold!

After I posted that I thought you lived in Queensland (what with liking XXXX and all :)). Did you survive the floods / cyclone ok? I am personally not a fan of Rugby League, I much prefer Union.

That was my point, Taekwondo is not really a martial art and does not really teach you anything about defending yourself (just how to do flashy kicks). I did a freestyle karate for a while and I found it teaches you a lot more about how to defend yourself in a real fight.

@Corax and Jcakes: Did you guys ever do martial arts? What kinds?

Not too long aago I've killed hell Ball with a skeleton-magemancer by the name of ColorlessGreen.

Yeah as I said before I did a freestyle martial art based on a style called Goju Ryu. It had a fair amount of focus on sparing while incorporating the traditional karate elements.

I also did Fencing for a while and was doing the national circuit (predominantly using Epee). Unfortunately I injured my knee badly and can no longer do either of those two sports.

Good morning bar!

In for my daily visit :)

On Tae Kwon Do: As I have mentioned my son was in it and now has his yellow belt, he quit 2 weeks ago, It was just too boring I think. Its just memorization basically. There is a real lack of practical application in it. I don't regret him doing it, I think it was a good confidence builder, but I'm not sad he left.

Watched Dragonball: evolution recently, had some really bad actors, but a good story. I am largely unfamiliar with dragonball, but it was pretty cool I thought.

Had some dew at one of my favorite mexican restaurants last night, they press and cook their tortilla's right before you order, they are Sooooooo good! especially with a nice dew :)

I used to do TKD. I liked it, but the gradings were always a long way away. In retrospect I can see how it can be viewed as such.

I miss martial arts. At least Minecraft is free, now I've bought it.

BJJ and MMA are fun and complement each other nicely. Both usually have much more sparring than TKD/judo etc traditional martial arts. I recommend!

HI cg!

Call me elietest, call me an EU, but I prefer judo (I have a nice low center of balance AND it helped my posture for theater) and savate. I actully learned the kind called Savate Défense. Did you know one of the offical weapons is a chair? another is your coat.

@water_moon: That savate stuff sounds awesome.

I used to to eskrima, but haven't been to training in a while. Nowadays I occasionally go to the forest where I learn from this cool guy. He runs a free class on sundays and wednesdays. It's in a forest next to his home, and 4-10 people come regularly. The actual martial arts seems to be a mix of various things, but draws it's roots from some chinese system.

To me this guy who teaches me looks like an actual Master of the martial arts. My eskrima teacher looks up to him with alot of respect.
