Energy Shield and "Damage Reduced" Mod

Hey, Everyone,
How's it going? I know I read this somewhere a few weeks ago, but can no longer seem to find it. I have searched these forums and went through several of the items in the Sorceress Guide & Knowledge Library, but could not find an answer.

How does the "Damage Reduced" mod, as found on items such as Shako and Shaftstop factor into Energy Shield? Also, is there a limit to how much Damage Reduced % I could get with my gear?

I thought my questions would definitely be answered in the Energy shield explained v1.1, but could not find any answers there.

Thank you,

"Damage Reduced" (%DR) doesn't really "factor into" ES at all because ES is the first thing that gets checked (even before resists as I'm sure you've read by now).

After your ES absorbs damage and redirects it to your mana, then resists (which include %DR), MDR/PDR, absorb, etc. take effect on the remaining damage to your life bulb. This is why MDR and PDR are so effective with a high ES build. Resists and %DR can only further reduce resulting damage by a given percentage of what's left; MDR and PDR can actually completely negate certain damage when used properly because they are set amounts rather than percentages of what's left.

%DR is essentially like physical resistance and is capped at 50%. You can wear more, but it'll be useless unless you get cursed with Decrepify (-50% physical resistance) or Amplify Damage (-100% physical resistance).

Hey, PhatTrumpet,
How's it going? Thank you for the very thorough and informative reply. So it wouldn't be a great idea to use gear if I am only going for their "Damage Reduced" mod, right? I may be switching from Shako to Nightwing because of this.

Thank you,

To the best of my knowledge, here is the order to which damage is calculated:

Energy Shield
Bone Armor and Cyclone Armor
Damage Reduction and Magic Damage Reduction)
Resistances
% Absorb
Direct Absorb

So it wouldn't be a great idea to use gear if I am only going for their "Damage Reduced" mod, right?

That depends on which Damage Reduced you're talking about. Harlequin Crest Shako is "Damage Reduced By 10%". The percentage sign being the key.

Something like Iron Pelt Trellised Armor is "Damage Reduced by 15-20" where there is no percentage sign.

The former (Shako, stuff like Shaftstop, etc.) are, more or less not useful to an ES heavy build. The latter (Iron Pelt, Gladiator Bane, the effect of Sol rune) are extremely useful for an ES heavy build.

For example:

lvl.40 ES + Shako: Physical hit of 400
380 damage is directed to mana bulb, how much is subtracted from mana dependent on Telekinesis synergy. That leaves 20 damage to health. Shako will eat 2 damage (10% of 20), making it 18 damage that comes out of your health bulb. Doesn't really do much, eh?

lvl.40 ES + Iron Pelt with straight DR17: Physical hit of 400
380 damage is directed to mana bulb, how much is subtracted from mana dependent on Telekinesis synergy. That leaves 20 damage to health. Iron Pelt eats 17 of it, so only 3 health is removed from your health bulb. Had that been a perfect Iron Pelt with DR20, you would have taken 0 health damage.

Thank you, draffut. I feel like a complete newbie, after returning to the game after a four and a half year hiatus =P I actually did a lot of Energy Shield research in 2001, but it's been a long while and my memory's very rusty. I appreciate you helping me out.

I actually did one of the original research pieces of Diabloii.net regarding Energy Shield: How exactly does Energy Shield works?

Thanks again!
