Enemy cold attacks

I'm curious as to the mechanics of receiving cold damage and its corresponding freeze length from enemies, mainly with regards to how cold resistance comes in. I trying to decide whether to forego cannot be frozen mod and map out my resists for the rest of hell for my whirler but would like to understand more thoroughly how this works before I come to a decision. I've been trying to test if lower res = longer freeze time and whatnot, but am having trouble doing so. Insight on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Rss

Re: Enemy cold attacks

As far as I know the freeze length duration has nothing to do with your cold resistance, different cold attacks have different duration. It would only be affected by items with the 'thawing' affix, which halves freeze length.

I have no hard evidende/numbers, but in my experience, I get chilled a LOT longer when I have bad cold resist. If both my character and my merc suffers a CE death nova and none of them wears CBF or 'thawing' items, it´s the one with best cold resist that loses the 'blue' status first.

Same here, didn't want to reply to this thread 'cause I wasn't sure. But it seems that way. Maybe some people at the statistics forum can provide us with an answer. I'm curious as well.

Re: Enemy cold attacks

What jiansonz said. I noticed my frost zealot(85 cold resist) would stay frozen for much shorter than any other character.

Re: Enemy cold attacks

Really? Now I'm curious too, perhaps you're right, shouldn't be too difficult to test :scratchchin:

Re: Enemy cold attacks

Do items of thawing stack? As far as halving the freeze duration again.
Can one pre-buff with potions of thawing (or multiple potions) for duration effects?
What about Mercs?
Holy Freeze aura is definately out right?

Sorry for the spew of questions, but it was a late night and the coffee isn't strong enough.

Holy Freeze is out, the freezing effect it has is actually slow and not freeze, despite your character turning blue. This is the only one I can answer with surety right now I'm afraid... I'm pretty sure you can pre-buff with multiple thawing potions to lengthen the duration of the cold resistance bonus but I didn't think it had any effect on the freeze duration, that last part might be wrong though.

Re: Enemy cold attacks

This is quite interesting. I have pretty much the same experience as the other guys here. Lower Cold resistance=longer freeze length. Maybe this should be moved to the statistics forum to let their brains come up with something?

Re: Enemy cold attacks

I don't think moving the post is necessary. It took me a while to remember it, but check out the last paragraph of this post by onderduiker: http://www.purediablo.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7338756&postcount=16

edit: ... it's hard to make heads or tails of all of that when I'm at half-past drunk, but unless my judgment is completely hosed, the first sentence says "cold resistance affects chill duration" - and I trust onderduiker's assertions about D2 mechanics (i.e. he knows his stuff)

No. If half isn't enough, go with CBF.

On a bit of a tangent, a sorceress could wear 8 HFD items simultaneously: Amulet, boots, circlet, gloves, orb, shield, and two rings. But even if it did stack, a single CBF item would trump 1/256 freeze length and leave more room for useful mods.

From Arreat Summit:

"The magical ability 'Half Freeze Duration' halves chill length, but this reduction is only applied once, multiple items with this ability do not lower chill length further..."
