Can anyone tell their opinion of the best mf character? Thanks

my vote is for a hammerdin. the only draw back is the lack of teleport from a sorc. you can MF everywhere without fear of immunes

Blizzard sorc is my favorite for the ultimate in fast Mephisto and Pindle runs. Baal, too, if you're taking good care of your merc.

If you want a more all-round mf'er try a Meteorb (more fun for regular play, too, imho).

For success with non-sorc mf'ers, get an Enigma first.

Best is hammerman, If you have Enigma, in my opinion.

How the poo do you get an Enigma..legit?????

So...no Enigma? Make pure Blizzard Sorc for hell mephisto. Level it up in Baal games where others can kill the Cold immunes and then you are off to Meph at level 70+. There you will eventually get tradables and maybe find enough gear to buy the runes for Enigma...maybe.

A nice second choice might be a Strafe (or I prefer multishot) Amzon for hell act one, Pits. In the Pits you will find less gear but you can find any gear in the game. Also look for socketed gear there. I traded a five socket crystal sword for a much needed Shako

imo 4 andy n meph (n maybe pindle) fb sorc is the best
it deals alot of damage n kills quick (if u get the rite equip)

Amen to that. With a fireball sorc you can nuke Andy in 5-6 fireballs or less. This makes completing Andy runs in under 1 minute possible. Seriously, I've done 10 Andy runs in 10 minutes before. Fully synergized fire sorcs (mine has 600% mf) can also take Meph too by luring him to the moat area of Durance 3 and pelting him with meteors while he tweaks out on the edge of your screen. I've also got a fairly good Frenzy barb who can tank Meph quite easily (800 mf on the barb).

Yes Hammerdins are the best if you're super rich with a Nigma en all, but as far as cheap characters fire sorcs and barbs are better.

As far as how much mf you really need, 400% is a minimum. Anything after that is better, but 400% is a breakpoint you just have to reach.

Hammerdin is the best overall. And pretty fast 2 when u use vigor aura.

(U dont need good gear - just 75% fast cast and the rest of your gear can be MF only )

Sorcs are good - Teleport makes them a bit quicker, except they are more fragile. ( All trees work well, just personal preference, I would use either a Blizz , Fire Ball or Chain Lightning/Lightning one) (If you are an experienced user u might want to go duel tree so as u can do a few other areas and not just bosses)

Barbarians deserve and honourable mention, they can have the most MF of any class, ( duel weild 2x ali baba with 4x Ist Runes)

And are fairly efficient, not as fast as a sorc, but can be as fast as a Hammerdin, plus they can search bodies for a 2nd MF shot. They dont kill as fast as Hammerdin or Sorc, thats the downfall.

my pals MF using sorcs or pallys but i stick to my ik/mf barb for various reasons:

lvl 30 BO rocks.
IK set socketed with Ptopaz grants a base mf of around 120%
Dual alibabas + 200% (if ur lvl 80 and if u socket it with mf jewels abit more)
Gheeds
about 50% from mfsc

Sub total: about 400%

I use a lvl 85 barb merc with the following eq:

Upped P-topaz skullders: 125%
P-topaz Arreats: 24%
Shael-ed 247ed GF

Total: about 550%

I do meph runs with him exclusively and it's great fun because i have to run there, jump over the blood moat, cast TP, go back, Battle Cry, Concentrate with the Stone Crusher, beat him 2 a sliver, switch and watch my merc kill him.

I know my mf style is abit outdated...but it works and furthermore, given the massive defence and hp the barb has, it's almost impossible 2 die. I just Howl away the dolls to clear a path for the merc.

Sorry if i'm ranting about my Ik/MF barb....it's simply because his so damn effective!

But if you wanna have a all around good MF-er, a hammerdin will be a wise choice, they are abit hard 2 play (alot of players play them wrong) but with enuff practice, hammerdins can sweep all before them.

My hammerdin is at lvl 42....i'm training him to clear certain areas that my IK barb doesn't like ;-P

errors

2 things.

First there are no mf breakpoints. Mf follows a diminishing returns formula for uniques and sets, so the difference between 200 and 400 mf is like an effective 60% better chance to find uniques, 400 and 800 is only 50%. I'm too lazy too search to bring up the exact %'s. The main thing is to not sacrifice killing speed for mf. I think a p'topazed shako, ptopazed skullder's, a gheeds, and maybe a couple more charms is plenty of mf for a sorc. If you cut your killing speed in half, you'll probably have to go up 10x your killing speed to even it out.

If you're gonna be a hammerdin, try to hit the 78% faster cast break point, not the 75% nothing. Skins of vipermagi(30%), magefists(20%), rare scepter(20%) and crafted castor amulet(5-10%) is my favorite cheap option. The unique burnt wand (+1 skills, 50% faster cast) is another cheap alternative.

It really depends on where you are planning to mf. If you want to focus on meph, pindle and andy, go with a blizzard or fb sorc.

If you wanna do runs such as pit runs and cows (not bosses), stick with a hammerdin.

Sorc seems more like a boss killer, hammerdin seems more like a crowd controller.

As nobody mentioned it, i use a necro... he's almost cheap, i use 11 skellies, 11 mages, maxed CE and 10 revives... with ali baba, p-topazed shakos and skullder, some small 5 6 7% small MF charms, 2 rings with mf and other mods, he can solo Hell baal.
I play without map hack, so the biggest problem is just finding the right way....

Strange assertion ... I thought that Enigmas were VERY expensive items, the ones that you could only get after months of MFing/Trading/ForgeRushing ...
Unless of course you're talking about <insert bad word here>ed ones, that you can afford for some $ on <insert website name here, that is very bad in D2's context> :innocent:...

Yeah, Enigmas are pretty much not available to legit people who have any resemblance of a life outside of d2 - which is why I've chosen not to get into details about what to do with one.

So, since you find my assertions strange, let me try to rephrase: Unless you're very rich, use sorcs for your mf'ing.
