Dupped items/runes, how to avoid?

I just restarted LoD recently and by reading the forums here, I noticed there is a flooding of dupped items/runes in the realms.

I can assure my items/runes are legit as they all dropped from monsters I killed during solo. But what about those from trade? Are dupes in some ways differ with the legit one? Any method to test the difference during trade? (i.e. tell the trader to move the item around the trade window? Let them start the trade? Re-create a new room and ask them to join? etc.)

Furthermore, I know dupped item has a chance of disappearing, but what about the dupped rune that has been socketed or the whole runeword item as a whole? Or runeword item can also be dupped too?

Within these 2 weeks, I already encountered possible scams like:

1) Swaping a normal item (same graphic) with the item we agreed to trade;

2) Rune trade, once I put mine in the trade window, his trade window automatically shown up my rune and then the trader quickly close the window and drop game;

3) Asking me to go to his room before doing any trade.

4) The trader flickering the 'tick' button.

I know the 100% secured answer is to play SP game or play solo on b.net, but stuffs just too difficult to get if I only play solo.. :undecided:

Thanks for all your inputs and suggestions in advance. :wink3: And sorry for asking too many questions. :cry:

There is NO difference between duped and normal runes/items. The only way to tell is to perm test. If your rune and some other duped rune of the same ID is on the same server, it'll poof. So it's almost never safe to trade for high runes...which is also why the value of high runes are VERY low comparing to the season start.

Thanks froztmourne,

Can you explain a bit how to do perm test? Is it by opening a game and stay idle in it (character with the suspected items) and seeing if the item disappears due to dupped item (same ID) appears in the server from time to time?

duping ticks me off, i just stopped some kid from ripping some one off in a chaos room. the one i stopped was tryin to sell the other one the dupe technique for $150.00 through pay pal, and i told him that the items have a chance to disapear. the kid who was tryin to rip him off started calling a me newb f's this and that, the random ticked off newb spamming stuff when he doesnt get his way.

No problem, most of the time people won't perm test with your runes tho, since testing them 1 by 1 takes a long time and effort. If its something expensive like a perfect ber ber CoA, people will test with you. You just need to find someone with a perfect ber ber CoA on your realm, and join the same game. If your CoA poofs, its duped. Same goes for his CoA. But make sure both of your CoA's have exact same stats, that way there's a chance that both CoA's are duped from one original CoA (therefore having the same item ID)

good luck playing d2

I just don't trade for high priced items unless they're from my guild or f list, and I know that everything being traded for/with has been confirmed to have been a legit drop found by someone in my f list/guild. That's about the only way I can think of to not get dupes. Or just don't trade at all.

Even if it does NOT poof, there is no gaurantee that it is legit. It can be that there are 2 CoA's with identical stats but different ID's, and both of them are heavily duped. It just happened that the one you brought into the game has a different ID than the other one. Anyways, even if you trade with your friends, you must be absolutely sure that they don't trade with anyone of questionable origin. In short, your group must be a self contained trading group that does not interact with the rest of bnet. Even if 1 person breaks this condition, the whole strategy is rendered useless. Therefore, I conclude that the only way you can be sure you don't get dupes is that you don't trade. If you just want to be reasonably sure, then don't trade any good items. For example, go for crappy torches, annis, and don't trade runes > Pul (I think pul is still reasonably safe).

When you are that late in the ladder season just about every "good" item you can trade for is almost certainly duped.

Like others said, you have to trust the other trader.

Either trade with people you trust or collect your own items and accept not being uba-1337.
