Duped gems... are you kidding me?!

US West HC Ladder:

Found 2 white monarchs and decided to trade them quickly for perfect gems. I'm in a game advertising my trade and a sorc comes in asking me to create a private game. I thought it odd... but did it anyway. I got 6 perfect gems for the monarch and then the guy asks if it's duped. I say no. He then responds "GG, duped gems" and leaves. I wasn't worried about getting duped gems because I'm just going to reroll a GC... but what have people come to that they need to dupe gems? This is sad. Since I'm not 14 years old I don't cheat at the games I play and I don't know what GG means. Good God? Good Game? Great Grapes? Gary Gorilla?

The GC that I rerolled went to "22% more gold" and hasn't gone poof so I'm not worried... I'll just continue rerolling it.

/end rant

He was probably messing with you.

The lowest items I have heard poofing are 20l scs, from runes someone said their lem runes poofed.

This was on softcore though.

The lowest runes that poofed on me was a Ko and a Shael. As for items, I suppose it was the 16/174 Ravenfrost.

Come to think of it, the stupidity inherent in the Diablo II code is pretty sickening :)
Fixed it for you. All I can say is that while the developers were obviously brilliant, they need better code monkeys. They probably hired fresh-from-High-School CS kids to program for them.

Even though some items are duped, doesn't mean that they will poof. Only those items that have item ids will poof. Examples of items without ids so they will never poof: gems, organs, keys, white items.

Every single item has a ID to it.

Why the items poof:
When you leave the game, a check is performed checking for duplicate item ids. If two of the same item ids are found, normally both copies are deleted (does not always happen). That is why you temp perm your runes or whatever when you leave the game. I'm not sure what exactly temp-perm does, but as I understand it, it distorts the item id until the next game.

Come to think of it, the depth of Diablo II is pretty amazing :)

The Id would have no way of going back to what it was.
The theory of perming is that you bypass the check.
And what is your source of info that white items etc don't have ids?

And Diablo II is a simple program compared to MRPs and ERPs.

Which is why it's utterly ridiculous how many bugs/loopholes/glitches there are in the code. I've got some basic CS experience and I can say with great confidence that if some of the glitches* in the code are difficult to fix...it means that the original programmer was a complete moron.

*Stuff like the bug in enhanced golem damage from the Fire Golem synergy

not true. only those items have ids that have quality magical and above.

And as a source, just use google.

Heres just one website stating this:
Source: *removed* per request

There are more, just look if you don't believe me.

5. Thou Shalt Not Pimp or aid the Pimping of hacks, Cheats or Farming. Hacks and Cheats are 3rd party programs that allow you to alter the way a player interacts with a game. This includes, but not restricted to Maphack and Pindlebot. We do not support the use of these. You may not ask for help in creating a hack/cheat, a link to where you can find one, provide a link to where people can download one. However, the morality of using these programs is sometimes discussed and we allow these [within reason], unless it violates any other rule.

Advertising gold/item farming and any sale of in-game items for real world currency is strictly forbidden. Linking to these services and their affiliates is also prohibited.

In the trading forums we do not allow people using trade hacks or Pindlebot and then peddling their wares on the forums. If using the trading forums you should make sure you are familiar with the Terms and Conditions of the RPGTraders.Net as they apply to the forums also.

I'm sorry, didn't think that my post about Diablo 2 design (and thats what it is) would be considered "pimping of hacks".

I removed both posts. Sorry if I broke any rules.

You guys have to realize what kind of mess USWEST Ladder Hardcore is in.

I know USWest scl has turned into a joke. Is the same thing happening in HCL? If so what a shame. SCL seemed like it was in pretty good shape this time last year but it has gone to **** in since then.

Ko's and sheals poofing? That is just pathetic. Maybe it is time to start playing untwinked?

Last I checked, purediablo.com wasn't a blizzard site, yet the forums here hold a great deal of information about the workings of the game...

And I'd like to note that USWest has ALWAYS been a bad realm to play on in terms of dupes/exploits. They are always the first hit with such things, which is why I like east. We never got those white items, for instance.
