Could Blizzard take this to court?

At the moment the lag on Europe is so bad that staying online for more than 30 minutes is pure luck and completing one run (RoF+Chaos) is impossible, thanks to a dupe method that went public some days ago. This method IMO could be compared to a DoS attack witch in turn is also illegal.
Now we all know that most people that plays this game are under age and could not be subjected to any jail sentence, so what kind of punishment would be suitable by the standards of the law for these kids?

- D.J.

Not hard at all, if you got the ip you can track them, and most kids don't bother to mask their ip either because this is "just a game".

I think Blizzard don't do it because it would involve them in court processes and so on, which would only take time.
It is like file sharing. Even though you catch one, there are thousands (millions?) left.

People would still continue, and think "the chances I'd get caught are minimal". Thats the main problem.
But I want them all punished!

How many people have even been tried for a DoS attack?

Blizzard has gone to court before for Battle.net. Granted the cause was a bit different but it does show their willingness to do so. Go here and scroll down to the last article titled "Blizzard wins lawsuit on video game hacking" for info on it.

"Hacking" is a misnomer.

Yeah, I remember that, it wasn't hacking but reverse engineering. Although I don't think that was the legal point the case turned on either.

From what I remember it sounded like a really bad legal decision.

I was really lagging on USEast a few days ago, (coincidently the ay the dupe method was released problably....) and now I can;t even sign on to east... Stupid uber dup3rs....

Battle.net pursues charges against 4 players (2 juveniles, two over age). The defense Attorney's will of course go on a media rampage.

End result if Battle.net wins = Headline "Computer Company jails teens for cheating at a game"

You can see the snowball effect can't you?

No matter what hacks these people use, everyone, including me, you and the other guy....will still play.

Get some kids thrown in jail and you'll paint a better picture. From a business standpoint, going after hackers like that is much more trouble than honest players continuously ranting and still playing.

1) I see that some did not read my post, I was thinking about an alternative punishment, something that makes them think (and maybe stop).

2) The correct term you all are looking for is crackers, not hackers. Hackers are people with gosu programming skills and I doubt they want to be assosiated with crackers. Also those who use a finnished product like a program to crack are script kiddies. Also spreading key loggers to steal someones account information is a serious offence even if "it's just a game"

3) If this is just a game then the telephone are just voices in your head, it's a way of comunication. Single player is just a game, I consider all online games a way to comunicate with other people.

how about Blizzard just executes a couple hundered of them? That'd make them dupers think twice...and think of the response of non-hacking players!

I like you already.

Back on topic: Just ban each CD key automatically every time you find evidence of duping. If you can't find a concrete way to detect it then this goes out the window, but duping becomes a lot less interesting if you have a 50% chance of having to shell out another $20.00 to keep on playing.

Evidence of Duping... does that also mean having a duped item on your character that you traded for? That would be a problem.

Backing up a bunch, sorry for this n00bish question, but how and why does duping cause lag?

Apparently the duping method in question involves creating lag and then exploiting rollback.
