Can a Rune Master be a godly weapon?

I just found one off of Hell Meph; the stats are

Rune Master
Ettin Axe
One-Hand Damage: 112 to 225
Durability: 22 of 24
Required Dexterity: 45
Required Strength: 145
Required Level: 72
Axe Class - Slow Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 87
Fingerprint: 0x3588c764
+241% Enhanced Damage
+5% to Maximum Cold Resist
Cannot Be Frozen
Socketed (5: 0 used)

I've been holding off replaning my fanatic zealot because I had absolutely no weapon to give him, and couldn't forsee killing anything in hell. So, what do you think? Socketed properly, is it an adequate setup? What are some budget options for socket fillers, and what would be your dream setup? Or is it not even worth the jewels/runes? Personally I think it'd be truly l337 with 2xLo, 2x 40/15 and an Ohm...but while I'm dreaming, I'd like it ethereal, and zodded

If it was for the off hand of a Frenzier or some other build that is speed independant, then I'd go Ohm * 4 and Zod in an eth perfect one. Realistically I'd stick a few shaels and some ED jewels in there, maybe an Amn too.

The search function just worked for me (don't know why it tweaked before), and I see there's another thread very similar not that old. Sorry for the spam guys, but it's still the best 1-handed weapon I've got, and the best I'm likely to see anytime soon. So thanks for any input.

I read somewhere in another forum re: Runemaster that despite the 5 sockets etc ... the Runemaster would still be hard pressed to be an overall end game weapon ... but this is just hearsay on my part. I've no idea - just what other forumites have chimed in (don't trust everything you hear is a good mantra).

If dreams are allowed, 4x Ber and 1 x zod in an eth one for the off hand weapon of a Frenzytaur.

But life being life :uhhuh: , I go for ED/max or min dam jewels x 3, and 2 Amns in the frenzytaur of course.

Chuck in some plain ED jewels, 2 Shaels and an Amn and you have a pretty secksy Zealot weapon.

I refer you to the above post by me:

it still can't beat a Breath of the Dying, but it deserves minimal style points (a nice rare gets way more)

Look who is back! How are you Solo?

on topic, try it as you will. Maybe that Liberace thing of Durf's, with 5 rare jewels!

it can be a nice weapon, but for the cost of making it really nice, runewise, you might as well just make one of the uber runewords.

on the cheap though, it can be quite decent for either a zealot or a fenzy barb with some ED jewels (or ED/max), some Shaels, and an Amn.

I personally don't like the Runemaster much at all. The clvl required (72) ensures that it's an endgame weapon only, but it's lack of mods means that you'd have to stick some pretty expensive stuff into the sockets to make it viable. If the clvl were a bit lower, it'd make a good mid game weapon with some shael's + amn's/ED jewels. If you do have the socketables to make the Runemaster useable, I'd suggest trading the socketables and getting one of the following instead:

Razor's Edge - damage is a bit low, but the speed, deadly strike, and open wounds makes up for it

Upp'ed Butcher's Pupil - if you upgrade one with high %ED, this turns out to be a very viable endgame weapon. Great min damage, good max damage, and deadly strike and open wounds to boot. Also it's indestructible, so you won't have to go back to town to repair every time you whack a fallen in the blood moor.

Death Cleaver - pwned. It's like Razor's Edge except with more range, more damage, and more deadly strike. Unfortunately it's hard to get and lacks the open wounds.

For a dream setup of your current Runemaster, I'd go with 2 x 40/15 + 3 x Lo, which basically gives you a Death Cleaver for like 10 times the cost. :teeth:

If you already wear a good Crippling Blow setup, 4xEth = -100% target defence. Run up to /p8 Baal and whack him a few times with that, since you can't miss, y'know? Maybe a Shael/IAS jewel too, since it's slow...but if you're Zeal-ing that doesn't much matter.

The effects of Eth runes are either 50% or 25% effective against bosses IIRC>

So you'd only be hitting half the time, maybe less. Given you're not a melee character that is.

I'd be happy with it, but then again, I was using a djinn slayer/butcher's pupil on my fanazealot until I found a b-star which I finished the game with. I'd go with ed jewels or elemental dmg jewels, shaels or/and amns (depending on the LL you get from other items). If it's the best you've found so far, socket it the best you can and have fun! you can also make up some damage by carrying some elemental damage charms (btw, i think in poor to not-quite-poor man's terms- I'm starting to collect some good gear, but played a while without any- so I stack charms, go for socketed weapons when I've needed them, and used the best of what I've found as I could- I realize some people don't like some weapons, and I understand the reasons, but if you think you can make it work, give it a go!) I disagree with Vajar- the style points I would give it are for making it work and playing and finishing with a weapon some don't think is very viable (shows skill). Jiansonz and a lot of the other HC and SC non-twinkers have the most style points in the forum I think...heh heh...

Also, the CBF mod means you can free up a slot from a raven's frost ring (if you use one- if you don't have one, well, the CBF is one of a zealot's best friends I think). OW and CB you can get from other gear (it's nice to have more of course, but not necessary).

As for the botd...:p mild reminder of the pally forum...heh heh...Q: 'I have a zealot, what should I use?' A: 'Get yourself a botd zerker axe' sigh...if only it were that easy...
