Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

Having looked at the figures... Blizzard does heck of a lot more damage than Frozen Orb does. Why is it that it's alway recommended one goes with Meteorb rather than Meteor and Blizzard?

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

because blizzard needs 50+ points to be effective. Orb needs 21 (not counting prerqs)

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

Blizz needs synergies to do well. Orb doesn't. also, Blizzard and Meteor timers are about the same.

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

you realize that frozen orb shoots 50 icebolts in random directions, each one doing the listed damage, right?

blizzard will do more damage per hit than orb, but orb hits a lot more times. so just comparing damage is not really a direct comparison.

that being said, blizzard isn't bad even with only 30 or so points to put into it but most take orb unless they can spare 60 points in the cold tree.

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

50?! How many does Blizzard do? (assuming both skills are on level 20).

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

I don't think 50 is correct. Think it was 16 or something.

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

i've never actually counted the icebolts but there's definately way more than 16 icebolts there. theyr'e kindof hard to count lol. here's a random youtube video i found when googling frozen orb:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgYQHb1Y6Ow

skip to about 1 min into it, you can see frozen orb. i'm not going to try to count that stuff but that's a lot of icebolts. of course most of them won't hit anything but enough will that its pretty deadly.

blizzard mechanics is different, what it does is it creates a blizzard cloud above the mobs a few yards accross and everything that steps under it periodically gets frozen and takes blizzard damage. a blizzard it usually won't hit the same target more than once per second or so, although it will hit multiple targets if there are multiple mobs under it.

edit: i just googled it, according to one source, the precise number of icebolts shot is 40. 20 of which come from the final explosion, 20 of which come before that. seems about right.

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

16/18 is the number of shards that pop from the final explosion only.

To the original poster; Blizzard and Meteor don't work well together because they're both timered spells, meaning you have a lot of casting downtime waiting around.

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

Thanks for replying everyone.

I've watchd the video and visited various sites that have some info on the Frozen Orb vs. Blizzard issue. This one in particular:

http://www.lurkerlounge.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4326

After doing these test, I wouldn’t say one was better than the other, rather different in their own ways. I would recommend Frozen Orb if survival or relaxation is your goal. I would recommend Blizzard if destruction is your goal.

Ultimately... I like the whole "destruction" thing.

However, I hear what Socialism says about the casting delays, and whilst I'd perfer tom use Blizzard over Orb, is there a Fire spell without a casting delay that would go well with Blizzard?

(Note: The casting delay doesn't really bother me all that much, to be honest, but if I can get rid of it then I may as well. But doesn;t Orb have a delay, as well?)

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

Yes orb has a delay, but afaik you can cast orb while you wait to cast meteor again, while with blizzard you'll either be casting one or the other. Using those also means both your attacks work best for stationary targets which can be a pain. You can use orb while you run away and cast meteors though. The other problem with blizz is that it often misses. On big groups it works great, but I can't imagine it being fun trying to kill single enemies with a weaker-than-normal blizz. Go with orb, you won't regret it.

What you're looking for is a blizzballer i.e. blizz + fireball? Never tried one myself so I can't comment on it.

Re: Blizzard/Orb + Meteor

Hm, thanks for replying. The mass damage Blizzard calls to me, so I'm going to check out some builds for that, and if I dont like 'em, I'll go for Orb.
