Am I chaosing wrong?

I like to do the occasional chaos run, but have read a few threads about not hitting the seals till the end...? Making sure diablo is out of the star...? Please explain. I've been out of the game for a while, but I've never heard of such strategies. It makes me wonder what other things I am doing wrong.

I've never heard those rumors... Sounds like possible ways of making things easier for solo play, but if you do fine without doing those things, then don't worry about it... I'm more than sure that it won't give you better drops...

I guess it is about not hitting the seals untill all the mosnters and minibosses are dead, you dont want to be hitting Diablo and die to some OK s IM, right? But the order in which you opent them doesn t matter. About Diablo out of the star it helps if you are not a melee character, that way you can run around him in the open and avoid his red lightning. Other than that I cannot think of anything.

You don't need to worry about that. When the final seal is activated and Diablo spawns, any monsters left in the Chaos Sanc die instantly (except for the seal bosses).

Well I was giving an example, so that s the answer to the first question, when doing chaos runs you go for the exp and drops mostly, so killing all just hitting the seals would contradict that.

It's not when the last seal is opened, it's when the three seal bosses are dead that the area is cleared.
Oops. You're right. It's when all 3 seal bosses are dead.

If you want more exp, the order in which you hit seals does matter. You want to kill all the seal bosses and minions before you hit that last seal. If the last seal you hit is one of the boss seals, it will be difficult to kill all the minions for more exp before you kill the boss.

I lag like hell over the star, that pisses me off. I don't know what it is, the same thing happens on some bridges in Act III, the stairs in town in Act V and a few other places... it's weird, only happens on my new computer, my slow, ancient old one is fine...

I save one of the nonspawning seals for last so that after killing the last montser I can get to full health and click on any shrines that will help before opening the last seal to spawn diablo. In other words I want to be ready when Diablo spawns.

If you kill Diablo in the star you risk his drops falling where they disappear.

Turning off D3D should fix the problem.

Diablo does not appear until you ahve killed the minions. If the last seal you open is one of the summoning ones then Diablo will not appear until all the minions are dead.

Or - he never has for me...

Though - personally I open a non-monster seal last to make sure I have full health/mana/not cursed/poisoned before I go to fight Diablo

If you are leeching, stay out of the star. Simple as that. The runner deserves the drops, and you don't deserve to die.

As for opening seals. You should stand in where the venom lords will spawn, and have someone open the seals on you, then you would know why they ask you not to open the seals. I also open the non-boss seal last, and the venom lords second last. That way, I can summon up 10+ extra fast venom lords against D.

No, he means restarting the game in GLide or DirectDraw, as you can't change the renderer midgame like Quake and other FPSs. GLide is only for 3dfx cards, which are no longer sold, and DD is for non-accelerated cards.

Just for reference, it may be known to some of the people here that my video adapter's fan fell out some time ago. I made a makeshift washer to hold it in, but it turned out all the work taking the assembly out and putting it back in to the heatsink cracked the thermal paste. Thermal grease has helped a bit, but clearly not well enough, as the card crashes at odd times, mostly when playing Quake 2. Strangely enough, it has never crashed during Diablo 2, and I figure because, despite the 300+ FPS I had at the highest point years ago, the drivers don't really use the card to do most of the work. This could tell us why the game is just horrible on hardware never envisioned by the coders (i.e. GeForce4 and up), as it was originally written for GLide before 3dfx went bankrupt, and they didn't really know what they were doing for Direct3D. OpenGL wasn't even a possibility, but I refuse to try a GLide wrapper as they're just unstable and horribly underdeveloped.

If I switch to software accleration like DirectDraw does that mean I lose some effects? I seem to recall on my old computer with no hardware acceleration I didn't have some coloured lighting effects.

Yes, that's correct. You will lose some 3D-related features like perspective view, but I personally don't feel any of these features necessary. Anyway, to change to DirectDraw, just re-run the video test of d2 and it'll allow you to choose the graphics mode.

If all 5 seals are opened and the 3 seal bosses are dead, Diablo will spawn even though the minions might not be. As you have mentioned you should hit a non-monster seal last so you can get more exp.
