It has all been about the Wizendraw really. I can't tell you how important the "Fires magic arrows" is. Without it there have been a number of fights where I would have run out of arrow umpteen times!

Guardian? I think not. I'll need to be REAL lucky with item upgrades, at the moment I'm pretty poorly outfitted. A WWS might swing the tide, from memory it's got Magic Arrows too, 2 sockets, +40% resists, chance to cast Amp (for those PIs)...etc.

I'll get a good idea whether I have even a remote chance pretty quick I think. The Blood Moor and the Den should tell me quick enough. I plan to full clear EVERYTHING on somewhere between /players 1 and 3, but probably 1, because I need all the levels I can get, and all the item drop chances too. ;)

Whatever happens, it's been an adventure, and has definitely made me a better (i.e. more cautious) player. I'm pretty confident that the instances of me suiciding "good" characters, which I normally do by getting cocky, will decrease significantly! :)

I was comparing my inventory to yours, just curious to see what others are using. I have a TON more charms and a lot less of everything else . Pretty lucky that you found two lums, and no other useless low level runes (Io, Dol, Ko, and Hel most of the time), very lucky! I always manage to find at least 2 Io's and Dol's with every char... I also find it funny that you have so much gold, since it does absolutely no good.
I also wish you luck on the road to guardian, but if you don't help those resists soon, the first CE nova that hits you might bring deeds.
 
Heh, I did find an Io (Hellforge) but muled it off into my collection.

I've been collecting every pile of gold. Sort of using it as a personal scoreboard and because I was interested at how much the piles can accumulate. I dropped 500,000 in early NM (when I hit gold-max) and took a picture, so I've picked up over 1.1M in the trip without selling a thing! ;)

I consider I've been quite unlucky with charms. I've found HEAPS of gold-find charms and +AR charms, but very, very few "useful" ones. I've also left 3x +20-22 life large charms on the ground and am carrying three. I only found the cold damage small charm in the WSK in NM, until then I'd been using a 2-5 cold damge large charm I found in (I think) Act 2 NM. Basically ALL I hope for every time I see a charm is resists...and it pretty much never is. :(

So far, Athena's strategy has been rather straightforward: Cold arrow on the front runners, slowing them and causing traffic problems and then just plucking away until they get too close. Then run, then repeat. Unless I think I can take them standing still, in which case I do.

I just ran the forgotten tower, which was interesting. The hardest bits were the two groups of enemies with might. Especially the archers who I couldn't really run away from. I did the countess on /p1 which turned out to be ridiculously easy. But hey, I was paranoid. I wish I'd left it on /p8 though... I think I could've taken it.

I've also discovered the beauty of doors. Often, I'll attract a bunch of monsters, run right through a doorway and hit the first who comes into it with cold. That and getting hit with arrows seems to stop traffic flow. Then I just repeat when the front one is dead.

Best items are my 3 self-repair items (boots, hat, armor) and a small charm that does 1-2 cold damage and has 5% poison resist.

My biggest worry is andarial, because I really don't have any way of dealing fire damage. Though poison is my highest resistance...

Can't wait to hit level 18...

Congratulations, Butz! That's awesome! My hunter slowed down a lot in hell difficulty but it sounds like that combination of magic arrows and fissure will be all right. Well done! Do you pick up all the mana potions you can find to sustain that habit? And your equipment isn't half bad, in fact it is much better than mine. My rune luck has been decent, getting several sols and shaels and amns, which I can't complain about. I think you'll be OK once you find the armor, that'll bump you up into the +20 range for lightning, which I think is most important. Here's to hoping you can get that WWS... But remember, Princess_Diana is still waiting to pick up the slack if you make a mistake, but for now, good hunting!
 
Earlier today got to the arcane sanctuary. Brought it down to p3 so I could manage, I'm thinking I'll do the arcane sanctuary on p8 though for more xp/drops.
Not playing any more HC for a while cause I lost my lvl 83 zon who was halfway through act 5!!!
 
Evangelina is making good progress in Nightmare. She still relies on her Shadow Warrior and Cloak of Shadows to stay safe. The Shadow is also the main source of damage against small groups of regular monsters. Saves durability. :azn:

According to the Assassin forum FAQ, the Shadow is currently using level 12 Phoenix Strike (it´s half the level of Evangelina´s PS, plus 1/3 of the Shadow level, rounded down in both cases). That is enough firepower to kill most regular monsters with 2 Meteor bursts + afterflames.

The way I 'drive' her now is to make use of the weapon switches. Both switches have a non-melee skill (CoS, Death Sentry, Fade or Venom - I switch them around a lot) on the right button. One of my setups has PS on left button. That is how I let the Shadow start a brawl. As soon as she scores a PS charge, I will switch to my other setup that has Blade Fury on left button and Swordback Hold equipped. Then I spread BF around and try to hit as many monsters as possible with Open Wounds. Shadows can´t use Blade Fury, and she will only use melee skills when she is occupied in melee. That means she has no choice but to use Attack in the situation I describe. As soon as she hits, a Meteor will start falling. Then I switch weapons again, and the cycle repeats. If there are a lot of flames, it can be hard to see if she has any charges, or if she has released a Meteor (but I can usually hear the Meteor coming).

Of course, boss packs tend to complicate things, and the tanking ability of the shadow is not particularly good at the moment. I have a feeling it will not ever be anywhere close to golem/valk/bear territory...

So for the tough situations, I will use CoS liberally to increase safety, then either spam BF or try to hit the edge of the pack with a Meteor (generally trying to move quickly-in-quickly-out and avoid getting next to nasty bosses). Evangelina uses level 18 PS Meteors, much more powerful and the flames last a lot longer. If the shadow is about to die, I will usually recast her in the same spot she was standing. That is usually the spot where there are the most flames.

I left Cleglaw´s sword and gloves somewhere in the Catacombs. That´s because I found a really good rare War Hammer. It does good damage and has dual leech. Evangelina can use more or less non-stop Blade Fury with this weapon (and heal herself while doing it). Also, I am not so far away from being able to upgrade it (I need to find an Amn or Thul, plus I need to level up twice to reach the required 100 STR).

I took the /players setting down to 3 for Andariel´s floor. Looks like that was unnecessary, because I needed almost no potions at all. :thumbsup: Moving up to Andariel just behind the shadow shielded Evangelina from poison sprays, and allowed her to release 1-3 Meteors in safety. Once the shadow died, I ran small circles around Andi, so she would run in the flames as much as possible. It was over quickly.

Athena has had some firsts… first near-death experience, first time low on arrows. But mostly, things have been easy. Getting ice arrow has been a big boost though I’m coming to regret having spent 3 points each in cold arrow and poison javelin. They are synergy skills, but I should have saved that until later. Then again, perhaps it saved me.

I found an ID tome in the barracks, which was really lucky. I’d hoped for one more, but I guess I only really need one.

Everything has been more or less easy with a few sticky spots, except taking down Andarial. I came down to the low single digit hitpoints with poison active when I screwed up once, though it wasn’t that hard when I wasn’t making mistakes. The stupidest thing was that I forgot to don the rings of 25% poison length reduction, which I’d just found, until halfway through the fight.

On to Lut Golein and the horadric cube. I think I’ll do radament at the midway point of the act.

I wish I was playing a fishy.

Princess_Diana made it to the Crystal Passage. Killing is so slow! I've switched it to /P1 because the areas that have demon imps possible have all spawned with said demon imps and their teleport and running around drives me batty, I so am foregoing some extra experience in some areas for the sake of expediency. I'll ratchet it back up when I have gotten some more mundane monster types where I can keep my flank protected. Nothing else of note has happened, still trucking along. I'll post an update by Wednesday, hopefully.

edit: Since I now have valkyrie and LF maxed out, I'm spending further points in my passive tree, getting more efficient in Critical Strike, Evade, and Pierce. And I have realized that although the Valk has a boatload of life, she is possibly the dumbest "friendly" available.

Some friendly advice: do not neglect Decoy. If I had been in your situation, I might have put a few points in Pierce (for better LF efficiency) but I would have preferred more points in Decoy over extra points in Critical Strike or Evade any day of the week...

Since you do not have a merc, a strong Decoy will probably be needed to keep you safe if the enemies are spread out. Extra points gets you a Decoy with more hit points, longer duration, lower mana cost, plus the Valk gets more life.



 
I would have preferred more points in Decoy over extra points in Critical Strike or Evade any day of the week...

I concur wholeheartedly! Right now my Decoy is at level 4, but I really wanted to get critical strike from level 1 (16%) to level 3 (32%) because my valk is the only thing that does any damage, unless I am throwing javelins and in that case everything dies in seconds. Penetrate is comfortably at 49%, where it will likely stay except for maybe a point more to get to 55%. I wanted another point or two in evade because I always get snagged on the run by something, and that'll kill me in hell. The good news is that all of these points in the passives make for a better valkyrie too!

As for me, I've been away for a bit and not updated for a bit so there is quite a bit of progress for Jane Doe. At last update she had cleared to the Arcane Sanctuary I think. Now she has finished Act 2. The arcane sanctuary was very easy as all the monsters there would drop fairly quickly to Plague Javs. With the cube it became much easier to keep a steady supply of javelins, and mana hasn't been a problem. I've been keeping chippies to reroll javelins for replenishing, however I checked ATMA and found that maiden javs can't drop until Act 3, so she will have to keep the supply of chippies till then. That means limited storage for other items, so she is a minimalist for now. I also hate leaving gems on the ground, so some of the chippies did get cubed with regular javs (no replenishing yet) and a few combined with flawed gems to make some std quality gems. These will either get socketed when I find suitable gear, or possibly be used to cube a magical reflex bow when those start dropping. A pair of gem shrines even allowed her to make one perfect ruby, which hopefully will become a blood belt when mesh belts drop.

Anyway, there have been no truly interesting drops or finds in act 2. She is still using the same 3 chip sapphire bow that she finished act 1 with, uses the shield and boots that andy dropped (both are self repair) and has a self repair ring mail that I haven't found something worth swapping for. She's using normal javs for the most part, plus what she finds along the way.

She cleared all of the false tombs on p8, and reached lvl 28 in the process. It was funny, I was always watching for the spear class weapons (trident, spetum, spear, brandistock) to drop to make more javs, but, after clearing all those tombs, and all of the real tomb, I was low on javs so I decided to try the short spear she had to see if it would work with the recipe and it did! So I tried other javelins and now I realize javelin class weapons also work in that cube recipe! Oops, that would have been way easier from the start! If she's down to just a few left, drop them in the cube with some arrows, voila, more javs! :badteeth:

Anyway, after all that she was ready for Duriel. Remembering Silent_Bob's painful demise I chickened out and set it to P1 instead of P8. It turned out that Duriel was pretty easy, it seems his poison resistance is low, and she probably would have been fine at p8. In any case Jane_Doe is now safely into act 3 and is looking forward to saving all those nice body parts, decreasing her available space again. grr....

Thanks mate, so far so good. Stepped out into the Blood Moor, and actually after the slow going of Act 5 NM on /players 5, /players 1 Hell seemed fairly simple, so I ramped it up to a huuuuge /players 2. I could go higher still, but I'm scared of that boss-pack I can't kill, so am trying to increase drop chances a fraction, while still erring mostly on the side of caution.

So Blood Moor, check, Den, check (but no skill...grr!), Cold Plains, check, Blood Raven, Mausoleum, Crypt, check, check, check. Cave level 1 and 2, check and check, Stony Field, check, Underground Passage 1 and 2, check and check, and Dark Woods WP, a big check, and...breathe... ;)

Unfortunately drops have been pretty ordinary, seen a few decent TC whites, but nothing worthwhile keeping. I did find a 2-socket Gothic Plate in the Cave Level 2 and while not the best option, I thought that would do and chucked in the Nef and Lum. It increased my resists to something like 12/28/15/-10, but at least most of the important ones are no longer red. I'll happily trade my Lore Shako if something with decent resists comes along. A Tal's Crest or Rockstopper would do just nicely. ;)

Aside from that, I've seen 3 unique weapons, all normal quality melee weapons and one green ring I didn't even bother picking up. I also came across my first unkillable boss. It was a PI, FE Gargantuan Beast thingie in the Cold Plains. He took pretty much no damage from my fissures and my 15 poison over 3 seconds doesn't really cut it in Hell. ;) Fortunately he was very slow and it wasn't in a bottleneck that I had to pass, so I killed his minions and parked him. I'm sure there'll be many more.

Next session I start in the Dark Woods, the WP was near the exit from the Underground Passage, so I have the whole area to play with, however RIGHT at the WP is an encampment of Carvers, which is a nasty beginning for me, because they are reasonably quick, move around a lot (whenever one is killed), have the Shamans, but worst of all are immune to fire, which is my only area-killer. Perhaps I should have left the computer on overnight to minimise the risk...but too late now. As long as there's not a nasty boss-pack in there, I should be ok

That is not working the way you want to. /p2 has exactly the same drops as /p1. In SP, the simulated extra players count as unpartied players, which are only counted as half the number. This means the breakpoints for increased drops are the odd numbers (3,5,7). You do get the extra XP for each extra simulated player, though.



 
Ahh, thanks jiansonz! I didn't know that. I'll have to move between 1 and 3 then. The extra XP is fantastic, but mostly I wanna see more loot! ;)

@Butz I've run across monsters like that that have been nearly unkillable even for less restricted chars. Those things are CI to start with, have lots of life and good regeneration. So if they are stone skin and FE then they get PI and bonus to fire resists, not fun at all.

Lonely_Jane had an easy time with act 3. She soon reached lvl 30 and got the Valk. Most monsters would head for the valk then a single plague javelin would take them out. Even minor boss packs and zombie types only took 2 or 3 javelins to kill. Tougher packs like the SU's took a few, but still went down fairly easily.

She had a few interesting finds and decisions to make in this act about storage.

This pike was very tempting as a backup to the javelins:

With sockets it seemed customizable, and with self repair it would always be there for her. However, it was very slow, and she decided to go back to a bow when she found a socketed reflex bow. She rerolled that once with 3 std gems to get a magical, then a couple of times with chippies to try and get something. Nothing worth keeping so far, but she wants to save chippies for when she finds a magical maiden javelin. Even with these rerolls used, she still has 20 chippies in inventory. She rerolls the bow now and then when she runs out of space to store more.

Last night I continued on from the Dark Wood. The start wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, because no carvers were in sight when I stepped through, so I moved away from the camp, cleared a small area, then took them all out. The rest of the Dark Wood was pretty uneventful and into the Black Marsh it was. I cleared about half of the Black Marsh, found the WP and the Countess' Tower and headed down.

There was a HF archer pack right in the entry, but my bear was in front of me which allowed me to Fissure them all pretty quickly. I checked and there was no CE, so no big explosion...phew! I then turned the corner, cast another vine and was frozen in place. There was nothing around, so no danger, but I couldn't move but to spin on the spot. I tried everything I know, weapon switch, cast some stuff, attack spots, etc, but with no teleport, leap, or whatever, and because of the nature of the tournament I don't even carry a TP, after a few minutes I had to S&E.

On re-entering the game, I saw that the Black Marsh WP wasn't activated. Damn! I had walked right over it for goodness sake...and it was right near the Tower too. I made the decision to do what you should never do in Hell, and what has cost me several HC characters in the past (will I ever learn?) and bolted from the Dark Woods WP to the Black Marsh WP. There was one point where I had quite the following, but fortunately it never got really hairy, but it did cost me two full purples (for safety).

I went back into the Tower (I figured nobody would consider it re-running, given that I got about 6 steps in the previous time), and had an uneventful trip down to the bottom. The Countess dropped Dol and Thul. Already carry a Thul and not sure the Dol will be of any use, but I've made room for them both for the moment. From there I went back up to the top, back to the Black Marsh WP, triple checked it was activated and exited for the night.

Progress through Hell is very slow, but so far so good. :)

@CB, very nice belt, love the resists and would happily don it. One thing I have noticed though is that I think people are over-rating the self-repair mod for armours on ranged characters in this tournament...particularly characters with castable minions. I found Duskdeep somewhere in Normal (from memory), and cast it off late in NM when I make a Lore Shako. I believe the helm had 10 durability when I found it, and 4 when I threw it away 5 or 6 acts later. Given how many tal/ral/ort (whichever it is that you repair with...Ort?) I've found in that time, I wouldn't be too concerned. That belt looks great, but if you find a better one without self repair...go the better one now you have Valk and Decoy (IMHO).

I've seen that bug many times, although not for a long time and never in the Tower. It sucks!
Four techniques can free you, but not all of them always work:
1. Holding "option" to view ground items, and clicking on a distant one.
2. Opening and closing skill/stat screens.
3. TP. (But sometimes, I was still stuck, in town, and I had to try the final technique.)
4. Patience. After a few minutes the game seems to re-synch, and fixes the glitch. When all else failed, this worked 100% for me. I never had to S&E.
