Act 2 merc - Range and IAS questions

As the title says, I have two questions about the Act 2 mercenary. My search for answers has left me with inconclusive results and complicated formulas. I was hoping someone in the D2 community would be kind enough to give me a simple answer.

First question, does a polearm's Range have any effect on a mercenary? In other words, for example, would a giant thresher with a range of 5 allow the merc to hit targets further away as opposed to him using a colossus voulge, which has a range of 3?

Second question is about IAS breakpoints on my mercenary, I'd like to give you a specific example. Currently, my mercenary is using a ethereal giant thresher socketed with "Insight", andy's visage and a plain archon plate fort. So.. by default I have 20% IAS (from andy's). If I socket my Andy's helm with a 15% IAS/30% fire resist jewel, would that allow my merc to hit the next IAS breakpoint? Yes or no?

Thanks in advance, I love this game and for the most part I love the community (except the partied barb/druid i met in a pub duel game last night, jumping and nk'ing ppl saying "gd, remake your garbage, etc., those ppl can go to hell).

Act 2 Mercs always have range 3.

For IAS breakpoints use this calc.

Ok, it's like 3 years later, but i had a similar question. Seems like, according to the calc, that adding 15% ias to Andariels 20% will get you to that 6 / 3.57 attacks per second breakpoint with 35 ias. So adding a 15ias jewel allows you to jump up 2 attack speeds. Seems worth it!
