I need another Arreat's Face (used all I had), so few months ago decided to do Andy/Meph runs until I find one. Still no Arreat but found those boots today:

Wow, awesome boots, especially for that level.

SoJs ... yeah :(. I have found 2 or 3 in my entire career, but none since restarting, despite having found plenty of unique rings by now, especially from Travincal and Nihl. Indeed that's RNG.

I found 2 40/15 jewels in quick succession, nothing since

I have never found a 40/15 in my 15 or so years of playing D2. I think a 37/15 was the best I ever found.

I have found probably somewhere between 5 and 10 SoJs.

I have been constantly trying to find high runes since I restarted again on Single Player around a year ago and all I have been able to find so far is a Gul from a log in LK. I did find a Death's Fathom from the level before you go down the stairs to Nithlaak. Found that before I got my first Shako this time on single player lol. Only was 19% though ><.

I once found a Ber Rune from doing Pindleskin runs back in early 1.10 (I think). I don't understand how so many people appear to find high runes after high runes all day long and have all of these runewords, but I can't even find anything over a Gul Rune. Its so frustrating.

If it's high runes you're after, then it comes down to 2 things:

1. Spend a lot of time playing D2 - You can't find high runes if you're not playing the game. I'm obviously not revealing any secret here, but you have to dedicate significant time to finding high runes, even in the current patch's relative boost in drop percentage.

2. Spend the time you do have in D2 farming the right areas - The most effective areas in terms of time spent to high runes gained are going to be LK and Trav. Keep hammering away at those two areas with the appropriate build and you'll eventually be rewarded.

Of course, luck is a factor as well, but it's all about using your time efficiently if your number 1 goal is more high runes.

Keep in mind that all those high runes people are posting about? They're not posting about all the time they spent NOT finding high runes. The IFT is a bit like Instagram and Facebook in that sense. People post a highly-edited version of their life (or time spent playing D2 in our case) and everyone else looks a whole lot happier/fitter/tanner/richer then you.

I definitely don't run the areas as efficiently as most people probably do. I just can't enjoy the game while playing it at super high speeds. I like to identify anything that has a possibility of rolling something useful, most magical and almost all rare items included. I also have a hard time sticking to one particular area for a long time.

I like to switch up between a mixture of Andarial, Countess (sometimes clearing all 5 levels as the item find calculator says the ghosts have some of the highest chances of dropping a high rune among normal monsters), Mausoleum and Crypt, Ancient Tunnels, LK, Trav, Mephisto (also the council members in Durance level 3 sometimes), River of Flame, Diablo and CS, Eldritch, Shenk, Pindleskin (sometimes clearing the second level down from him, the level before the last. found my deaths fathom from the pack spawned from an evil urn there), Baal and Cows.

I know one day it will eventually happen. Its just very discouraging seeing someone find a HR almost daily on here, while it seems impossible for me to find one. I want my Enigma and Grief already lol.

What @TopHatCat64 said ... 100%. I know the feeling you have now really well, but that's what it all boils down to. You see lots of HRs and other goodies in the IFT and stuff like that all the time, but it isn't found by one person, ups and downs in RNG drops do play a role, but all you get to see in the IFT is the ups, and some people just play more and/or more efficiently. Always keep that in mind. Don't focus on the drops you want but on the fun you get out of the game, and the drops will follow.

The same here and 15 years as well.

I think it's 4-5 for me.

I have been constantly trying to find high runes since I restarted again on Single Player around a year ago and all I have been able to find so far is a Gul from a log in LK.

I've found every rune in the game, with Zod being the last one a few weeks ago. I think it's one Zod (SP), 4 Cham (2 on bnet), and about 3 Jah, 5-6 Ber, 10 Sur, 10 Lo, 10 Ohm etc. I've found most of them since v1.13 (and on SP) when rune drops increased significantly.

I once found a Ber Rune from doing Pindleskin runs back in early 1.10 (I think). I don't understand how so many people appear to find high runes after high runes all day long and have all of these runewords, but I can't even find anything over a Gul Rune. Its so frustrating.

That's it. The more you play the game in the right areas, the less it depends on luck.

To bad grinding isnt better than what it is:
Code:
 Soul Sunder
Winged Axe
Throw Damage: 10 - 204
One Hand Damage: 16 - 198
Quantity: 175
Required Level: 82
Required Strength: 96
Required Dexterity: 122
Fingerprint: 0x6521ecd6
Item Level: 92
Version: Expansion 1.10+
49% Enhanced Damage
+115 to Maximum Damage (Based on Character Level)
+1518 to Attack Rating (Based on Character Level)
Adds 6 - 30 Cold Damage Over 1 Secs (25 Frames)
7% Mana stolen per hit
4% Life stolen per hit
+19 to Life
It's not great, but it's not terrible, and it's letting me explore slightly different item configurations, and that's a good thing. This will probably end up collecting dust in the stash, however. I swear, replace the grinding mod with cruel and this would be ideal as an off-hand weapon on Ayura D:

Edit:

The game is rewarding me for trying new things:

I am with you on not being the most efficient player. My wrists start hurting really bad if I am zipping around so a decent pace is really what I aim for. Like running LK for instance; I can do really quick runs just porting from shack to shack, but it’s definitely not the funnest way for me to play, or most lucrative. I get more of everything mixing up LK runs to include chests, poppables, and monster packs.

I also like to run lvl 85 areas(AT and Pit mostly) and generally do full clears. Mephisto is a great target, especially with a Sorc early on because of the innate Teleport. I have had my dry spells with Runes for sure, but there are so many other things I pick up to keep me going. Finding a great rare or magic item, or an awesome base for a Runeword is a challenge all by itself. I love to craft gear so jewels and gems are always welcome.

Your luck does seem kinda poop to only find a Gul in that time. This will be quite contradictory, but get a good 2 fire LK map and do some full clears of opening every stash, chest, log, dead body, etc. You don’t have to kill all the monsters, but I am telling you that HR’s will drop that way.

I've found every single item from the game except ofcourse, Tyraels...One ZOD, two CHAMs and one and only JAH...I did certainly more then 100k runs in D2, but runes JAH, CHAM, ZOD are almost impossible to find...5k +LK runs and highest for me is SUR...So yes, i can understand frustration of other people, while speaking about runes...

As for SoJs, i don't remember exactly, certainly 10+...BKWB 5 or 6 i believe...

Truth is, as others pointed out already, if You want such items and runes, You have to run like madman...Not funny at all, but the only way...Other way - You have to be lucky bastard :-)

Taking a break from the throwbarb, decided to continue running LK for runes on Gnosis, the untwinked windy druid. LK has been fairly fruitless thus far, spitting up a single Um rune. Twice now, a poppable has yielded unique rings: first one, a 29% nagel. Second one:
View attachment 8911
Code:
The Stone of Jordan
Ring
Required Level: 29
Fingerprint: 0x9c8008c2
Item Level: 80
Version: Expansion 1.10+
+1 to All Skills
Adds 1 - 12 Lightning Damage
+20 to Mana
Increase Maximum Mana 25%
Not only is this the second SoJ I've ever found, it makes Gnosis the carrier of both of them... Hopefully I get an Arach to replace my caster belt so I can put both of them to use once I get my enigma.

What goes around...

Comes around. =D

I have a feeling I'm going to end up having to trade for the runes or runewords I want lol. Do people even trade high runes? Are they reasonable to attain through trades?

I have a pretty good LK map that I've been running the last few days, but I just don't have the attention span or willpower to run it efficiently for long periods of time. I end up wandering around a bit and killing boss packs and popping other chests, logs, etc. after awhile. Hopefully I get lucky though.

@Jamie Don't know about trading for HRs but personally I think it's so much more satisfying to find stuff yourself, and by now it's honestly so easy to farm these HRs in LK. So if I was you, I wouldn't want to spoil that sense of achievement. :) They will drop, you just need to keep going, and it doesn't take that much dedication and patience considering the reward. Assuming ~30 seconds LK runs (which you can easily get with a Sorc even with totally random gear), farming Enigma takes ~30 hours and farming Infinity takes ~20 hours on average, statistically. For D2 standards and considering how rare HRs used to be in the earlier days, that's really not a lot of time.

As far as areas are concerned, from what you're saying it seems definitely LK is where you want to be. It's only after getting those first OP runewords from LK that farming areas like Travincal becomes reasonably efficient as well. There's great information on farming HRs in this guide if you want to know more.

Found a pretty sweet Widowmaker, and I've been jonesing for a weird build, so I think I'm going to follow this build and make a Ranger paladin. I think apart from the bows/crossbows I'm going to do it untwinked.

Code:
Widowmaker
Ward Bow
Two Hand Damage: 59 - 158
Durability: 29 of 48
Required Level: 65
Required Strength: 72
Required Dexterity: 146
Fingerprint: 0x5e9fc7ff
Item Level: 87
Version: Expansion 1.10+
Fires Magic Arrows
199% Enhanced Damage
Ignore Target's Defense
33% Deadly Strike
+3 to Guided Arrow

@ffs I mean I definitely know what to do and where to go, I'm pretty familiar and experienced with the pvm aspects of D2. I just have a really hard time finding high runes, for whatever reason. I find a lot of sweet stuff minus high runes and it is definitely very rewarding. I have always enjoyed the trading aspect and economy aspect of Diablo 2. I switched over to single player because the rampant use of dupes and botting discouraged me from playing for very little reward. I'll definitely keep shooting for finding those high runes. It's just that I would also find it very rewarding to trade desirable items that I find for the high runes to make the gear that I need as well.
