A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Update!

Let me announce: Conquerer Anaphylaxis is now ready to really defeat the monsters of Hell.

Act V was.. interesting. It was the first time i really have had any real problems so far. I have been playing this character stricly on p8 (except NM Diablo; p3), but sometimes in act V i felt that i shouldn't have. I had a really close call in the last session:

1. In the Frozen river, the monsters were souls, blue bone-spear-shooting serpents and cold skeleton mages . Luckily, Rhyme provides CBF (at most points, Dim Vision took care of it, but anyway...) but the merc is still vulnerable. I was calmly walking round a corner when BAM! five or six rays of lightning passed through Anaphylaxis' body. I always cast Dim Vision ahead of me, but i must have miscast it somehow :scratchchin:. With adrenaline pumping out of my ears, I retreated around the corner and cast Dim vision before sending the merc in. I estimate that 80% of my red bulb was emptied. The source was this guy with friends. Lesson learned, no more careless walking, EVER! Had it been in Hell, i would've died..

The rest of the act was easier. The ancients died rather quick (and was completely safe). I had found another Amn rune and a two-sock sup (13%ed) Hyperion spear (read Strength) for the Haseen and I didn't even have to resurect the golem once (now cast with ~5000 life). Also, in Nihlataks temple, last floor (alwasy mix the names) i found a 3 socketed Boneweave with 484 defence. Haseens gear in that fight was as follows:

Code:
Strength
Superior Hyperion Spear
'AmnTir'
Two-Hand Damage: 51 to 176
Durability: 21 of 30
Required Dexterity: 120
Required Strength: 155

Poison Resist +15%
Adds 37-133 cold damage over 2 seconds
40% Faster Hit Recovery
33% Chance of Open Wounds
15% Chance of Crushing Blow
-20% Slower Stamina Drain
Socketed (3: 3 used)

Fiend Casque
Coronet
Defense: 31
Durability: 30 of 30
Required Level: 39
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 54
Fingerprint: 0xdb77cdb6
+30% Enhanced Damage
+5 to Minimum Damage
4% Life stolen per hit

The only thing that was difficult in the last leg of the journey was in the Throne of Destruction, where two boss packs (together with a horde of regular) of Doom Knights/Oblivion Knights caused my merc to die like five times. Lister and his pack fell easily while foolishly hacking and slashing away at the golem while decrepped.

Notable finds:
- Hwanins Refuge
- Magnus Skin
- Butchers pupil
- Pus spitter
- Bing Sz Wang
- Amulet of Life Everlasting (25)
Along with 2 Blood Crescents, 3 Dimoaks Hew and 2 Isenhearts case (not to mention sigons greves, now completing the set, isenhearts shiled (completing set), and other low lvl items).

PEACE!

edit: good to see you come back Merlin! May the force be with you (this time :P)

edit2: hmm, i've been playing around a little with the gear. Anaphylaxis is now at 75/71/75/18 in the resist department while still sporting 273% mf for Haseens kills. great, let's head out to the blood moor!

Nice work iomanip.

That is some superb merc gear to have available before even starting Hell. Very impressive!

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

yeah, i must admit i got very lucky with the Um from Hellforge :)

peace

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

It's good runnings for you Iomanip. Meanwhile, my own necromancer, pasmani, has lucked out a bit in the canyon itself. These drops were only in the canyon itself (TWO popped out of a skeleton stash, good thing I shopped for a telekinesis staff)
- Blood Crescent
- Isenhart's Cage
- Isenhart's Lightbrand
- Civerb's Ward.

One decent rare dropped as well, a crystal sword with 5% LS, 10%IAS and some 32% enh. dam. Too bad that a) Iron Golems can't be made out of crystal swords and b) the bloody thing was named SKULL scratch.

Well, with my stash filled to overflowing with these drops, I reckoned I could perhaps visit one tomb, but of course I enter Ancient KAa's hideout. He dropped crap btw (a rare morning star with no enh. dam and monster flee 25% is NOT considered to be a good iron golem option... seriously)

Update again!

Hi folks, time for a small update.

Anaphylaxis began his journey with his new 'twinked' gear, collected from previous experiences, and by this, his time as prime MFer have ended, not to say that drops have been bad but... more on that later.

During this session, I have been switching between /p1 and /p3, and so far it has been smooth going all the way, and the killing speed have not decreased. The only difference from NM nightmare is that it takes fewer hits to die...

Anaphylaxis quickly stormed through the first leg of the act. In the dark wood I was again impressed by the power of Dim Vision, a truly game-breaking spell. Without it, tackling those darn carvers/shamans hidden in the woods. Speaking of carvers, some of the numerous tiny leaders dropped this. Great merc armor, too bad i have Duress already...

After reaching the monestary, I began to be a little bit nervous. I play in windowed mode and is (to my knowledge) unable to adjust the brightness of the picture, and the jail and the catacombs arevery very dark and perfect for ambush. In the jail I found a golden club. Great for druids... :scratchchin:. To ATMA ASAP. Later in the catacombs i had a NDE from extra fast, extra strong arachs. The only problem with Dim Vision is that if a monster already have 'targeted' you, the blindness won't kick in until the monster has hit you once. This can be very dangerous if the merc/golem is occupied elsewhere. Normally i counter this by casting Terror on the monster chasing me and thereafter recasting Dim Vision, BUT if the monster is extra fast and if the attack is unexpected.. you get the picture, around 200 life left . Anywho, in the next room, a pack of tainted dropped the second S/U cuirass of the day.

Andy fell easily. She was hardest in normal.. strange. Decreptify combined with golem and occasional use of Life Tap saves the day against all bosses. Also, i am very satisfied over the performance of Duress. Surprisingly good stuff to come from Andy (for me). Good for amazons... :scratchchin:. To ATMA ASAP.

I haven't reached far in Act 2. Im currently resting with the Dry Hills waypoint tagged. One more noticeable drop, at the 'entrance' to the Dry Hills: drop. Great for hand-to-hand combat... :scratchchin:. To ATMA ASAP. If i'd had the str to equip it, i would have used it, but 133 str is too steep to aim for..

edit: hmm... just realized that i can't use Duriels shell anyway, the question is if i even am permitted to pick it up to mule it away, or if i violated the rules... Merlin?

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

No, is ok. You can't use it, but I'm perfectly fine with you muling such an item off to ATMA. it's not an easy item to find, and especially hardcore you should hold on to it. Stash away, and gg on the progress!

I cleaned out all of the false tombs myself, and then took on Duriel. The golem died pretty much immediately, and my merc couldn't tank him. as for me, I fed the merc potions, kept duriel amped and hit away with my sword. 200 HP is not much, 1 duriel hit took half of it away or some such... But nevermind, two merc resurrections later, Duriel died.

And he dropped nicely! A nokazon Relic and a Shadowfang two handed sword. And a couple of useless rare bows. This is not bad indeed, the relic will be handy against the big D, and the sword is a viable trade in for my 'steel' claymore. It may do less damage, and be slower, but with 9% LS and MS, it'll prove useful for survivability.

Nothing useful dropped in the false tombs btw, allthough the true tomb gave me anothe rblood crescent, another isenharts case and a deathspade. I'll save the blood crescent for when I need a sturdy iron golem, After wasting duriel I'm not going to off him again (never liked the maggot), and I remade the golem with a nice rare long sword I found, ethereal, IAS, 20% enh. dam, +2 min dam and 5% LS.

Update

Yet another update this fine day.

Anaphylaxis has now reached Act 3, and I'm already looking forward to the challenge. Act 2 was actually pretty easy. Outdoors it's bright and open, letting me control the crowds easily. Indoors (or rather underground) the monsters are aggressive and have a tendency to be very tightly grouped, situations where Corpse Explosion really shines.

No really tough spots throughout the entire act. The maggot lair was boring as usual, and the dreaded claw viper temple lvl 2 is not that hard when the monsters (except Fangskin) won't attack you until you are ready for them (read Dim Vision, 13.2 sec @ lvl 24 i believe).

At the first Claw Viper Temple level i made another find, this time useful for all classes. Mid roll but kick*** nonetheless. I also (finally) was able to roll a better mf amulet than my previous (34% vs 28%)! Total mf is now 309% for Haseens kills and 214% for Anaphylaxis.

I tackled Duriel at /p3. Some chaos at the beginning soon stabilized to exactly how i want it to be: Duriel attacking Epinephrine that can't be charged (or rather can't be moved) while Haseen is stabbing it in the back. 40% crushing blow from Duress + Strength made quick work of the bug, and the battle lasted for approx. 90 seconds. One rejuv was used before the above mentioned stabilization, Duriel attacked Haseen numerous times before i had time to re-summon Epinephrine at the appropriate location.

My overall experience of this character is that it's extremely powerful. The curses are truly life-saving, and crowd control spells like Dim Vision and, possibly (haven't tried it) Confusion makes everything very safe. Like i mentioned in a previous post, I first Dim Vision a crowd, and can then choose (by small radius Amp) which monster i wish to fight. Noticable is that chamions are actually harder than pack leaders, since you have four monsters that can't be blinded, instead of just one. When encountering a tight boss pack, the minions are often sent in the other direction with Terror.

Update!

So what have Anaphylaxis been up to this time?

Well I'll tell you, he is now known as defeater of both the Lord of Hate and the Lord of Terror. His journey however, began long before that, in the swampy jungle around Kurast.

So, after defeating Duriel i was beginning to feel the tingling feeling of fear. Act 3 have some of the most dangerous areas (for me); The flayer dungeon, the sewers and the durance lvl 1 and 2 (i.e. all areas in Act 3 with dolls, I usually die here at some difficulty). The spider forest, the black march and the flayer jungle was actually pretty easy. Dim Vision, one corpse and then one ore two CEs to clear the screen. Craziness! In the flayer jungle I made a peculiar find, my 2nd Gheeds.. hmm, too bad i can't pick it up. It replaced my former by 3% mf (now 33%) and some gf, my old one left behind. I finally reached the Flayer Dungeon. It began promising with this drop on lvl 1. A pretty deadly stare trap with exploding children in the room just down the stairs form lvl 1 led to increased heart rate (both for me and Anaphylaxis, its hard to avoid the bones when they are flying around like that), but all good in the hood. I reached lvl 3 and used my newly acquired Teleport staff to reach the Witch Master as fast as possible. I then got the **** out of there.

I struggled onwards to Kurast and visited all the temples in order. Not a single stairtrap . The sewers was also reasonably safe. That bat boss at the sewer stairs dropped Alma Negra. Nice drops in general throughout the act!

In Travincal, the council was blinded and tackled one at the time. Death ensued, as usual. In shortness, durance lvl 1 and lvl 2 was hard. A extra fast, fanatic doll boss pack gave me a scare, but i prevailed. Mephisto fell very fast, dropping utter ****. On the other hand I found Doombringer a little bit earlier, so i'm okay.

Act 4 was more or less rushed through. I didn't feel like clearing the whole city of the damned for instance. The plains of despair held souls, and i'm happy to report that they weren't as dangerous as i'd feared. They hurt, but i got accidently shot a few times, and they don't kill. Gives me hope for Act 5. In shortness (it's getting late), Hephasto fell quickly, the Hellforge netted me Fal, i resurected the merc 5 times before diablo and about 10 times at Big D himself due to instant death due to the lightning spell. He dropped a Cathan's ring. Anaphylaxis is hanging out with Nihlatak in Harrogath, resting before the last leg of his journey, in this life or the next.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

LOL. Well, PAsmani has just made it to lower kurast... But I reran several mobs in this area.
I swapped out my rare heavy belt with a bit of fire resist for a rare plated belt with no fire resist, but better other stats (including lightning resist). But my measly 15 FR HURT when I face shaman with my melee mancer. Lucky enough, in order to maximize MF, my merc has to make the kills, and couple this with the maelstrom, I suaully amp and CE at a distance... Allthough I killed my fair share of flayers in all shapes and kinds.

Actually, drops have NOT been bad. Several good rares to make a Golem from, they have beenm stashed. I also found a manald heald, another nokozan Relic and an Angelic Wings from the electrified tree stump in front of Lower Kurast.(this is sweet... might be GOOD help with later AR issues the meleemancer might have). I also found a unique doubleaxe, which is my first, so it got stashed,. Let's just say that Pasmani made posthaste getting that distasteful blade back.

To compensate, I found a TERRIFIC spetum with 60% enhanced damage ethereal and some good elemental adders (some cold and some fire). It also had 2 sockets. Sweet huh? And it had a name with Bone in it. Well, ditched on the spot.

I also sold my very first set items ever... just didn't feel like getting ANOTHEr isenhart combo ni my stash (again the breast plate and the sword). Gambled a Rare circlet with only 4 mods on it, but 4 great ones . 20% FRW, LR +38, +50 life and +12 energy. Of course, no MF, so for now I keep the full helm with flawed topazzes on.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Really like that circlet somehow. If only it had +1 necro skills, but i guess that those mods are equally important on a meleemancer.. socket + ral? I assume it's in normal still, or am i being stupid?

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Yep, still normal. To be fair, I was cursing a fair bit about the fact that it lacked either MF (that would have been awesome) or + to necromancer skills. But all in all, not a bad little hood to have in my stash. I also gambled some decent boots and gloves, both with good fire/lightning resists.

EDIT: Forgot to add, my drop in topazzes in this act has been TERRIBLE. So far all that dropped topaz wise was one flawed and 4 chipped. Sigh.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Oh, the gods of diablo taunt me so. ANOTHER rare circlet dropped in the jurast sewers (2nd to last monster too. Wanna know what mods? 21%enh. dam, add 31-54 fire damage, replenish life +8, poison resist 35% and repairs durability.
Sigh.
Currently, I have in my stash : 3 flawed topazzes, 1 3os breastplate, 2 rare circlets, 1 unique scimitar (for IG purposes) 1 rare ethereal kris (for same reason), 4 rings (1 a manald heal, the other 3 high end poison, cold and lightning resist) 2 amulets (1 himmering with +13 resist and some +11 energy or so, the other a nokazon relic, 1 rare gloves and boots for difficult combats), 2 full rejuvs and all of kalims organs and a chipped sapphire. I dont have enough room for the telekinesis staff, so I keep my cube with staff in it in my inventory. I'm telling you, I'm doing SOMETHING wrong :P

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

fill the 3os bp with flawed topazes, and then one for your merc. Or do you have better mf already?

/io

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Well, that's what I did. I then sold the skull cap with chipped topazzes and put the circlet with enhanced damage on his head. Still need cold damage on the pike, but I reckon he has more power and quicker kill speed against others.

Final Update

Anaphylaxis has conquered them all! Shenk, Eldricht, Frozenstein, Nihlatak, random Moon lord bosses in the crystalline passage, Thresh socket and many many more. We finally reached the Arreat Summit. :omg: (why did they remove that nice 'scared' smiley?). Touching the seal, teleport (that staff i almost accidently shopped when first arriving in act 3 did become invaluable during act 5), trying to summon the golem to distract two of the ancients, and let Haseen kill the third. In short, Haseen died almost instantly four times, and my full rejuvs were running out. On the fifth attempt, i managed to get the golem to engage Madawk and Haseen fought Talic and Korlic in a narrow spot (it actually looks like Talioc is fighting Epinephrine in that pic, but he had just whirled through Haseen). Talic was alos the first to fall to the crushing blows jabbed by Haseen. Next was Korlic. Haseen had already poked him while Talic was whirling. He fell quickly. Madawk was stubborn and kept retreating. Finally we managed to push him to a wall where Haseen stabbed him to death.

The first level in the WSK housed Defilers, small rat men and Ghoul lords. Not a challenge for Anaphylaxis' skilled comrades. Could've even had handled it without Dim Vision. At lvl 2, on the other hand, DV was very useful. The team faced Poision skeleton magi, Hell spawns and.. SOULS! I got hit a few times and separately the lightnings weren't that dangerous. However, when being hit by three or more, it hurt a LOT. I believe i cast DV once every five yards. Phew. lvl 3 was a breather with small teleporting creatures, ghosts and Defilers. Only scare was an extra fast, stone skin (PI) boss pack of Defilers. I discovered in NM that these beasts are immune to Dim Vision. Not fair.

In the Throne of Destruction Anaphylaxis faced more souls, Assiliants, Dark lords, Colenzo, Achmel, Bartuc, Ventar and Lister. The ´four first waves was easy due to Dim Vision and CE. This is not the case with the Minions of Destruction. 1) Immunity to DV and, 2) very high life, i.e. hard to get a first corpse. Despite heavy use of Decreptify extensively and recasting of Epinephrine, Haseen fell twice. At last i managed, by luck, get them into a bottleneckcreated by themselves. Epinephrine standing proud in the middle, unmovable with Haseen at his side slashing at the Minion sticking it's head out to the right of the others. Only four minions can stand side by side in the narrow (?) corridor and they fell one by one. Only one task left. Baal.

A single picture of the fight with the Lord of Destruction.

Anaphylaxis can proudly title himself Guardian Anaphylaxis.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

May i be the first one to Congratulate you iomanip .

Fantastic achievement getting a Guardian, with a unorthodoxed build (my style :)) and given the tournament rules.

What do you have planned next? another bone fearing necro, or other aspirations?

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Nicely done, iomanip! I'm not sure I've ever seen a quicker trek through Hell! CE at p1 is powerful.

WSK level 2 is usually the worst for me too. Your build reminds me of one of my own from a few years ago, also with 20 CE, 20 Clay, 20 Mastery. That gumby sure is a sturdy fellow indeed.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

I'll add my congratulations to the others iomanip. Well done indeed! That episode on the arreat summit sounds like a royal pain though. How did you separate them?

There it is. Another Guardian! Well, I also added another rip case (me, who else? I'm the king of RIP, not rap). Asfor Pasmani, I figured I could add him as well. Goings are fine. I rerun everything worthwile twice, so I can work both the council and mephy one more time. Nothing more useful fell then the maelstrom, so it's still listed as best find (allthough I DID find a superior zombie head with +2 Life tap, +2 DV and +2 Clay Golem, all useful skills. If I find no head to top this (unlikely) I'll punch holes in it with larzuk and hope it lands on two so I can make rhyme).
As mentioned before, I inserted the flawed topazzes in the breastplate, gave it to the moron and put the circlet with enhanced damage on his head. As a result, his MF has dropped slightly, but he kills SO much faster then me it's plainly ridiculous :P Even if I wanted to be a full time melee mancer, I'd have time to mow down one enemy in the time the merc kills the other twenty. Heck, given the right tools, even my Golem kills faster then me with my measly 'Steel' Claymore.

At the entrance of one of the passageway temples(both held viper stairtraps btw), a unique ring and green heavy belt dropped in the same screen. LOL. But the belt wias an infernal tool, and thering a second manald heal. Not so cool. At the durance lvl 1 a green ring dropped. I crossed my fingers for an angelic halo, but alas. It was the other one. I am still hoping to fetch a couple of angelic halos, I'll need them later on to stay effective. My life is quite low (270 or so), I'm not too anxious to face diablo, but this time, I have the means to max out both fire and lightning (AND I BLOODY WILL!)

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Thank you guys! sure feels good.

What do you have planned next? another bone fearing necro, or other aspirations?
Don't really know, since Blisters, my Green w/ Envy sorc died some days ago, i think i'll wait till another interesting tournament shows up. I'm theinking of having a go with the "Lethal weakness". Hmm... *thinking of a fun build*

Nicely done, iomanip! I'm not sure I've ever seen a quicker trek through Hell! CE at p1 is powerful.
Yeah it did go fast indeed, and was easier than i would have thought. There are many reasons to this, primarily due to 1) that Iskipped quite a few areas in both Act 2, 3 and 5. As I felt I got closer to the finish I quickened my pace. 2) I have had very strange working hours lately, leaving more time to play D2, and 3) it's my only character in SP, and ladder.... nah, not yet.

CE at /p1 is powerful indeed. What i think was the turning point though, was the Um rune from the NM Hellforge. After Hassen got the Duress, things it wasn't hard to get the first kill. The only monsters taking time to kill was the minotaurs in Act 5 (in the caves beneath Arreat Summit) and Ghosts. I only encountered one PI monster where Amp or Decrep. could break the immunity, and that was a Soul boss in Frozen River, NM.

I'll add my congratulations to the others iomanip. Well done indeed! That episode on the arreat summit sounds like a royal pain though. How did you separate them?
I activated the seal and then teleported down from the altar. From this position, i decrepped any ancients i could see. I then tried to cast clay golem in between them. Madawk was always the slowest, getting left behind and always focusing the Golem. If an ancient came too close, i tele'd as far away as possible again, but somewhat away from Madawk. The position i finally was able to set up (in the second pic) was the result of three teleports. What really turned the tide, however was that (and i don't know why) Talics whirlwind didn't do "un-potionable" dmg to Haseen. Haseens crushing blow was more than enough to take them down, the problem was he could stand their attacks. Once he could, the deal was sealed.

And Merlin, the Um rune was my best find, but maybe Duress Boneweave should be stated as "best item".

take care!
/io

edit: that head looks like a prime candidate for rhyme, nice going!
