A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Moe beat down Mephisto in a short session yesterday. The stairs to Durance of Hate level 3 were directly adjacent to the WP on level 2, so I decided to run him twice more. The quest drop was at /P8, the rogue got the kill and so the 200%+ MF yielded garbage. Very disheartening. It was a fun fight though, because when I confused the blood lords in the room with Wyand Voidbringer, one of them must have stirred up Mephisto, so I got to fight the council member, Mephisto, and about four blood lords all at the same time. Meph's ice ball hurts bad, but he never aimed his killing blow at Moe before he could heal. Rusty died in about half a second, so I went back to a level 6 gumby and decrepify for the fight, which made Mephisto pretty tame. I did go through enough gumbies to supply a Play-dough factory, but he went down. Subsequent runs were on /P1 and yielded a Steelgoad (too much flee to make a good Rusty) and a berserker's helm. I'll keep the MF and see what act IV holds.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Well, with the fall of both my MF barb and the char in the SUTC4 tourney, Bonophobic is next in my 'which character can I wreck now?' race. :P

Actually, forget I mentioned that. I think Bonophobic will be parked a bit longer, I am notin the mood for tourneying atm, with the recent lossess so shortly after one another.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Bah! Stop slacking Merlin. I'm waiting on people to do things. :P

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Slacking he says... :P Well, you have a bit of a point. Ok, how bout this. I promise, once I get another build started and sort of past this little dip, I will once again try to actively avoid bones with the pastyface, ok? :P

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Apparently my posts over the last few days are invisible to Mr. Dash here... I'll be caught up to you in a couple of hours.

It was a fun fight though, because when I confused the blood lords in the room with Wyand Voidbringer, one of them must have stirred up Mephisto, so I got to fight the council member, Mephisto, and about four blood lords all at the same time.
That happened to me once, and Wyand decided to heal Meph when I had him slivered. A subsequent heal fully restored Meph's health. I was no longer amused! I had to drag Wyand away, it was quite a nuisance.

Lots of forum activity pushed this thread to page three. I couldn't make an update this weekend because the computers in my house are all having connectivity issues right now. Alas, Moe has moved forward, and this is his continuing story.

I was speaking before about how Confuse tended to bring enemies from all parts of the map, and here is a showing of it. I casted it on a group of four skeletons, and before I knew it, I'd gotten a couple of dozen in the fight. Now, they don't do enough damage (at least on /P8) to actually help any, except for the clumping. And most melee enemies tend to stay in one place so the rogue merc can focus her attention on them one at a time. It's slow, but sure.

A nice feature of Confuse is that Unravelers no longer resurrect their buddies when there are other buddies around; they try to kill them. Even when I cannot actually curse the unravelers, but there are cursed minions around, they'll not raise more. I learned a lot about the skill, realizing then that even monsters not cursed will attack those that are, especially if they are physically closer than my team.

This is a shot in the arcane sanctuary, which was actually somewhat dangerous. The wraiths would come to join the party from several screens away, and since they'd take the direct route, it sometimes caused some issues. Since I was pumping Confuse to a decent level to keep the time on it high, and Golem Mastery to actually get some hit points into my Rusty, CE was still very low and useless on /P8, even in fairly tight clumps. The Confuse cannot be overwritten by other curses, which is highly interesting as well, but it works two ways. I have a level 7 Confuse. It lasts for 22 seconds. No matter what you do, that confusion lasts for 22 seconds. It cannot be refreshed until it expires. A monster cursed with Amp Damage or Decrepify, on top of the Confuse, remains both Confused and Amped. I noticed this when Rusty was battling two enemies, and I amped them for quicker dispatching from the Rogue. They continued to fight each other, even when amped. Now we're getting somewhere. It is dangerous though if I don't sequence the Confusion well. As more monsters show up, certainly they aren't Confused even though they'll attack the confused ones. Casting Confuse on them now creates multiple levels of the curse which expire at different times.

The trek wasn't all bad. My first green breastplate took until the Great Marsh to drop. I didn't even make a Rusty out of it.

This is a shot of the stairtrap that I talked about earlier with Sarina. I've kept Terror on a hotkey and will have that or Confuse on each time I descend some stairs. Getting the book was easy once I commenced messing with their minds.

Here is a shot of the fight with Mephisto and the Blood Lords. Wyand must have already died, as did the Rusty. I did get a screenshot of him before biting the dust but I didn't see Wyand in that one either and this showed the Blood Lords better.

So now that I've caught everyone up with pictures, we'll move on to the Outer Steppes. It was pretty tedious. The main monster type was leapers, who don't sit still for a proper beat down very well. Check out the Insane Leaper Posse. They weren't hard by any stretch but jumped around so much that the merc couldn't target them without switching constantly. There is no front line with leapers, even with a tank. My CE was still too low to help, so it was just time to grin and bear it.

The Plains of Despair held burning souls but they weren't any trouble when Confused. I think clearing will be pretty fast with a 9 yard CE radius when I come back here again; kill one, amp the confused beasties, CE bomb the whole neighborhood. With so many enemies coming to join the party, I'll only be clearing a few spots in each map area.

I thought that the Chaos Sanctuary would be pretty easy. For the most part it was, but some of the monsters didn't follow their Confused fellows in other areas. Especially Infector's pack. I thought it would be a cakewalk; Confuse the whole pack, watch them melt each other. Instead, they ran around so fast that they came at us anyway and smoke the golem and merc in seconds. Several times. Eventually I led them all the way back to the narrow hallway in the area leading up to the pentagram and killed them 1-2 at a time there.

Diablo dropped a Blacktongue, which I've never gotten before in HC. I muled it off in case I want it for later.

Act V was fairly uneventful, if a bit slow, at least until the end. I decided to pump CE early, as I knew that NM would be painful without it. So all points in act V went into the corpse bomb. It is in tune with the essence of the tournament anyway. The only thing that happened to me that got me wondering about this build was the opening to one of the bonus areas. This Champion Frenzytaur stairtrap had me spinning my wheels a bit. They chewed through the golem's HP pretty fast, and I wanted to keep him alive for the damage return. I amped them to double the return, but had to return to town several times to keep Rusty alive, coming back through hot portals each time. I ended up prevailing but in later difficulties I see this being a problem, as any AI curses are useless. Perhaps Decrepify would be a good alternative, but I did not try it here. That wouldn't even work on a Possessed anyway. I predict that a situation like this will be Moe's downfall.

Does CoS work against Champions if I make a Nadir helm?

I did the minions at /P8. Lister was a pain but I kept it high because I knew the experience would be sweet. The merc alone couldn't do much against their regeneration, so I had to help with my rare throwing axes. I love them because they are called Skull Mangler, and they carry poison damage to help in situations like that. A perfect name for a weapon in this tournament! I went down to /P1 for Baal. I had a level 6 gumby and Decrepify at level 4 from a yew wand that I had charsi imbue that gave +3 to it. Despite moving so much slower, Baal still cloned himself 4 times, but we got him. He dropped a 38% MF Langer Briser, which Moe will put on for the extra 18% over the Milabrega's shield. That puts him over 200% for every kill, with another 78% when Gaile gets the kill (which is most of the time unless using CE). So far my drops have been very poor for the amount of MF. But NM is where it is at for magic finding, anyway. Nihlathak did drop the General's flail, which is a sweet Rusty weapon. Low damage but 50% slow makes it like a mid-level Gumby with damage return. I've stashed that for hell difficulty, when I've maxed out the mastery.

Skills are as follows:

1 in each golem skill (I got Fire Golem specifically to handle Ventar and he worked beautifully, so I'll use Sparky to help against all inferno type enemies.
10 in Golem Mastery
3 in Summon Resist
7 in Confuse
1 in Attract
1 in Decrepify
18 in Corpse Explosion (I'll max this out with the DoE and next level up)

Moe has also found a Thul and an Amn in Act V, so he'll be on the lookout for a 4 os sword to make a Spirit. Because, seriously, 3 CE bombs deplete his mana bulb, and that's just ridiculous.

Gaile is using a cedar bow I rerolled with chips. It has a flawless sapphire and a +13 max damage jewel in it. She still takes about 5-6 hits to kill things, even when they are amped. I have to work on that.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

OS, IIRC CoS doesnt work on Champions or Heros. Also it may cause a crash with Leapers/Ancients.

Nice work BTW, you have made sick progress with a Golemancer, one of the tougher character classes around. Keep up the good work and the great write ups.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

GG on your progress OS. I'm just a few short steps behind you as far as Act 5 goes. I've only gotten up to rescuing Anya, so taking out Nihlathak and the rest of Act 5 will probably come later this evening or tomorrow afternoon while I'm off work.

It's taking me a bit of time to get to playing some D2, but I'll be sure to get Sneezy on the road once again and getting a writeup as soon as possible.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Moe has rescued NM Cain, with nothing really special happening or dropping. One of Corpsefire's minions dropped a Ripsaw, which is good IG material, as it pretty much saves an Eth and an Ith (malice IG), especially nice since I only have one Ith at the moment. So far I am not spending any good items on the golem at all, as he still dies sometimes. I'll buy something from a vendor and make him out of that. When we run across might enchanted boss packs, he dies still fairly often, even with over 2000 hit points. I find myself porting back to town to keep him alive because I won't want to spend the 5000 GP and time to find the axe I'll make him from. Throws off my mojo.

Anyway, he also killed Coldcrow and cleared out the Black Marsh. There he got a Hel rune and a Battlebranch and a Sparking Mail. CE is maxed out now, and I bought a +2 necro skills yew wand with a +1 lower resist staffmod. Ought to be nice until I get the spirit sword going, and will be a good situational weapon as it'll make CE against PIs more effective by lowering the fire resistance, and it saves me three skill points to boot. As it is now I cast curses with the +2 skills switch and blow up enemies with the langer briser switch, to max out the MF. I can still do much better on the MF front but I only have 1 PTopaz waiting to go, so I'll be limited until I get more topazes.

One other thing happened when fighting a rogue boss pack that concerned me; the confused rogues ignored the golem (except for a couple that stopped to attack him) and each other, and went straight for the merc and Moe. I have 12% FRW now and that isn't going to cut it if something like that happens again to an enemy that is in the mood to run. I don't know if it was a bug that caused that or not, but the monsters acted like they weren't cursed at all. Strange...

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

After meleeing Skeletons yet again, I decided my char was too tainted. So I deleted him, and have replaced him with SkelloPhobic. Let's hope I will remember NOT to melee skellies this time around.

Were they extra fast? Perhaps they had targetted you / merc be4 you cast the spell? Sounds odd.

Perhaps that was the case. As always, Moe has to run forward to pull the others along (Moe was the leader of the three stooges, after all) so something in the monster AI must have tripped before/during the time I actually cast the curse. It's happened more than once and I can't isolate the culpable factor. Maybe I should just retreat a few paces and TP out and come back. Only, that won't be an option when entering a new area...

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

This seems to be the last table posted, so let's update :P
I reworked your entry as well Old Solider, not sure what your new best find is though.

As for Skellophobic, so far the goings are worse then with Bonophobic. I pretty much use the bow all the time now (again a 3os longbow with 1 sapphire and 2 emeralds), so I dont have to remember I Can't melee skellies :P Blood Raven was the hardest fight so far, she dropped a rare preserved head which would be quite excellent for a fishymancer with +3 to raise skeleton and +1 to skeleton mastery, as well as some resists and better block and all.
I have filled my 3os ringmail with topazzes, and the Mechanical Skull cap with 10%FHR suffix on it has now 1 chippedtopaz in it. My first gambling session (just before engaging coldcrow) yielded no MF items, so the Mf is still quite low.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Witty, Serdash :P
A skullcap is aptly named, since it is meant as a cap that provides a degree of protection for the skull :P This was the definition I decided upon, and hence I didn't forbid it. Well, I didn't forbid the normal and exceptional version of it, at least :P
So yes, a Mechanical. Skull. Cap :P

Pssh. I swore off of using anything with "Bone" or "Skull" in it just for the simple fact that I would get picky and start making exceptions if I wasn't too careful.

Figure I'll make an update while I'm here.

My progress has been... well... lacking lately. I blame a bit of laziness but even more I blame this killer cold I've been having over the past couple of weeks. (Thinking about hitting the doc soon. ;P)

Sneezy has hit level 44 and worked his way up through stomping the crap out of Nihlathak. Rather, Zanarhi stomped the crap out of Nihlathak, while Sneezy stayed on cleanup duty to make sure nothing exploded on them.

So far, meleeing anything including skeletons has been a thing I haven't felt safe with. My resistances are quite low and my life bulb isn't exactly top notch, so I've mostly let the merc handle it while using poison explosion to deal damage over time, which when it comes to Pindleskin type monsters, isn't the best course of action. It seems monsters with high poison resist are going to be an issue, even with lower resist.

Another problem will probably be having a Clay Golem for boss fights. Without +skills, a level 1 golem with level 1 mastery doesn't exactly last the longest periods of time. I probably need to shop a wand with +golem and golem mastery, but so far my patience with shopping is very very low.

Another problem I know I'm going to have is bosspacks of Frenzytaurs. This may cause me to have to lower players settings in late nightmare, simply because they rip my merc to shreds. Confuse/decrepify/etc works to an extent, but sometimes the moron jumps right in the middle a bit too quickly and gets himself in over his head. I'll have to pace things a bit more later on.

Skellophobic requires a little update. After the 4th topaz in my last update, hit a topaz dry spell. Too bad, since I did find a Gem shrine. Forced to upgrade a ruby instead (oh well, more +life later on could come in handy). Managed to get the last Horadric Ancient out of his little cage in Tristram w/out any problems. The Countess was easy as well. Decided to run her for the first time on p8, and it paid off. She dropped a Tal Rune, but she also dropped an Arctic Furs. Nice. Earlier on in the Tower I got Cleglaw's Claw as well, and that is the total sum of Gold/Green items so far. I will rerun her twice to get some runes (and who knows what else). I mustn't forget the hole though... Haven't cleared it out yet.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

I'd say my best item drop so far is either the General's Flail, which will make one sweet iron golem, or Langer Briser from Normal Baal. Let's go with the Langer Briser, because it actually helps Moe do damage, OW, knockback, and MF and is being used now. I did play some last night but the can't-move-except-on-my-pivot-foot bug hit right when I was on my way down to meet the countess, so I had to S&E to keep from dying, as it was in the middle of a fight with a couple of wraiths. So alas, no progress update.

Rode the old venommancer a bit further. Found this cute little monastery along the way, which turned out to be freakishly huge, and filled to the rafters with walking bones. Well, with a lot of help by the trusty rogue, and a little bit of tanking by the oh so perishable, but who really cares, Gumby, they were all safely disposed of. Nothing terribly interesting dropped along the way, no more gem shrines either. Best find there was a Dimoak Hew, but I won't ever be able to use it :P Not that I really want to :P
Andy dropped crap first time around, and since I am not used to her letting me down like that, I ran her again. Naturally, she dropped crap... again. Well, I can take a hint if it is this forcefully given. So I took my little allergic behind, along with a trailing rogue and a gumby, and travelled of into the desert.

I must confess, I made a booboo. I switched to the dagger to clean out the skeleton free catacombs, but I forgot to switch back to my bow for the sewers. Sigh. Oh well, I let the rogue make most of my kills, and used poison explosion to dispose of several others. But I have meleed skellies, OUCH!!!!

I figured it out after Radament croaked, silly me. And then, I could freely use the dagger once again in the desert area. Gotta love that skill. Stab, walk on, wait a bit, mosnter croak. Usually, the merc was fast enough to launch an arrow for the mortal wound too! Very sweet. Xcept for Gumby continually dying to beetles. Gotta dump some points there sometime. But not anytime soon. I have decided to put 10 points in energy, to create a bit of a mana pool, since I find my liberal use of poison dagger, gumby resurrection, poison explosion and Amping, I drain that mana bulb faster then a british soccer fan can down a lager in a pub.
Once I tagged the WP in the dry hills, it was gambling time. And I gambled the pike mentioned above. The Bone impaler, aptly named too, since the only enhanced damage on it is to undead :P It does have 10%IAS and cold damage though, so it's not an entire waste :P In act II so far a green belt, another green light belt, and a gold axe dropped. Nothing usefull yet.
