23 Runeword Search Thread

I thought I posted this - but I don't see it. I also tried EldOrt. Didn't work. I'm done for the evening. Hope this helps.

Status Report

Though it may be depressing, I suggest somebody, one has contributed a lot of participation and research, post a status report on the progress made by this forum and those of others. I think this should include a few things as reading this forum I get lost in all the mumbo-jumbo and I think it would help out a lot if someone coulde provide an easy-to-read summary. First, it should have all the basic theories for runewords and a brief summary of each. Second, they should post the time and effort put forth to each one and possibly each theories viability. Third, perhaps one of you guys who are good with math could take some of the better theories, particularly the old runeword one, and calculate how many runeword possibilities (in percentage) have been tested. I hope somebody might be up to this and I'm not just too lazy to meticulously search through and make it myself, it's just that a lot of it I don't comprehend too well and I also think that maybe it will put things into perspective as to what courses of action could be taken.

Thanks!

I'll try this one. There is a list of rune words from the 1.07 patch release in one of the files. According to information collected here, about half of those potential 113 words have been checked or ruled out as a possibility.
In general, there are 33 runes and 16 possible item types - not including class specific items. Given the possibility of 2 to maybe 6 runes in any individual item - the total possibilities tried are minimal compared to what exists. The focus of this group right now is twofold. First of all, the rest of the potential 113 words are going to be tried out as possible. Secondly we have picked the item of 2 socket body armor. There are 1089 possible runeword combinations. Of those, 256 are Io or lower. Of those 256 - about 60 have been tested and reported, already exist or are ruled out (the duplicates of the same word don't seem to make sense).
Post 246 contains a list of the status of these attempts in a spreadsheet status. It does not include many of the 2 word armor attempts - specifically from Blue Streak and myself.
Also I managed to try TirIth in armor this morning and nogo.

And so far nobody has had any luck. Correct?
And basically the easier ones to make were what were tested. Correct?
And if so is it not also true that with the release of the new runewords with the 1.10 patch that all those runewords were relatively constructed with higher runes in them?

Correct - no luck so far, and mostly easiest to make tested. Some of the higher ones from the 1.07 list have been checked. The thinking is that with 23 new words instead of 4 some of them may be lower - at least in my head.
I'm trying to help because basically my highest b-net character before the new ladder was 40. I now have a 70 sorc. I play hermit games - mostly solo because the group I play with either are too low a level still or play HC. I hate lag, and died at lvl25 w/ my last HC character because the guy I was adventuring w/ trapped me in a room of dung beetles.
I've been saving runes for trying things, so it just seemed like the thing to do. I'm underequipped to solo in hell, so I need to item find anyway - so checking runes and socketed items isn't a stretch.

The fact that Blizzard said they've activated 23 "new" runewords suggests they may not be from the 1.07 list, which is a much more exciting idea in my opinion. Statistically, the odds seem very much against finding new words from the old list, with about half of them tested already with no results. You can also expect people to be testing those words first, and if Blizzard wanted us to "find" the new runewords, they'd expect that too. Therefore, it is logical, though not conclusive, that the 23 words are brand new.

I think it's a stretch to say that once we find one new runeword, the rest will be easier. To my knowledge, there is no obvious, or even not-so-obvious, pattern between the older words. Granted, runes do seem to fall in certain positions frequently, but that hardly narrows the search, Blizzard doesn't have to keep Shael in position one all the time for instance. So there's no reason to believe that these new ones will have any relation to each other whatsoever. Sorry if that sounds a bit despairing, but I think this might be the situation we're looking at if the 1.07 list doesn't produce results.

Man you guys are doing some great work. I don't have my spreadsheet at home, but I will update everything sometime around lunchish.

I'll also try to provide a summary of the Three main strategies attempted so far at that time.

You know - the more I think about it - the more I bet at least some of the other classes will get a specific runeword for them. I personally would think that each class (barring the pally's that already do) will get one. If the low level armor grid doesn't uncover anything when it gets filled - maybe the next bet would be a low level rune 2-socket orb grid?
Dan

Well I got the table updated. Again thanks a lot for the help.

Dansls1, as far as the orbs go, testing class-specifics isn't really a bad idea since as you pointed out only palidins and assasains have there own runewords thus far. However there are two problems I see with obs. The first is for class specifics in general, they are harder to obtain since you can't purchase them. Getting large quantities of two socket class specifics (especially orbs since 2 is, for the most part, their max) is quite difficult. The other problem I see with orbs is that they only cover orb and weapon categories. I'd be happier to try something like an amazon spear because they cover spear, weapon and melee. Melee is a large subgroup that would be great. That's why I think helms would be a better bet for class specifics. But as everyone knows, sorc's are far under-represented by weapon runewords, maybe this is their time.

Excellent tests, thanks much! You're slicing off vast swaths of the grid by the hour. Very helpful.

One note: In compiling my grids for all item types, I did notice that there are more two-rune words in which the first rune is higher than the second rune (e.g., DolEl instead of ElDol) than the other way around. I notice that you've been riffing off ElXxx, EldXxx, and TirXxx. You might want to slant toward XxxEl, XxxEld, and XxxTir instead, which is what I will be doing.

Blue:

In regard to whether or not finding one runeword will help with the others: I don't think we will see some pattern in that word, but I do hope we will be able to correlate that word with or use that word to reject one of the sets of theories on which we are working (1.07 list, Kenny-Z hints, et cetera).

Shaft:

Thanks for the updated grid. I'll have my spreadsheet (http://home.comcast.net/~wathombe/diablo2/wathombes_runeword_database.xls) updated in a bit in case anybody wants it.

...

I didn't have a chance to play last night, but I did check my stash this morning, and I've got enough spare runes to test 5-6 words next time I'm on (hopefully tonight). I don't have any items stashed away, so I'll have to go find those, unless somebody has some stashed and wants to get together to test on USWest.

Happy hunting...

Brief history of the 23 runeword testing part 1, the 1.07 list.

Just wanted to update those curious as to the current status of the three various arms of runeword testing that have been going on.

The first part (which is still pushing forward) consisted of the 1.07 list of runewords extracted for a text file. This list was chosen because it predicted all of the four recently activated runewords that were released just before the ladder reset. The original list contained about 125 possible runewords given variations in the list. Of these 125 words 5 are impossible and 51 have been reported as tested and not working, leaving 69 untested rune recipes. However only 1 of the 26 recipes requiring the highest runes (sur and up) have been tested. And only two words using a rune of Mal or better have been tested. Given that Blizz is prone to releasing higher powered rune words, it is possible that some of the activated runewords (if not all) are still included on this list. The issue is that most of the people that are willing to burn runes do not have access to very high level runes to test. There is however a site (not mentionable in these forums) that has tested a handful of mid-level and a single high level runeword(s), but the progress is begining to slow there as well. Anyway the current status of the 1.07 list is given below.

In addition to this list there are also three runewords that are on a list of possible 1.10 recipes. Some of these recipes are correct (i.e. Bramble) where others are not (i.e. CTA, Cresent Moon). None of these three runewords have been tested, and I wish someone could give at least one of them a shot. They are:

Will post later with the status of the other two legs of the runeword testing including Kenny's Quizes and the latest 2 socket gridding.

I do see what you are saying - I concentrated on the other side for 2 reasons:
1) I didn't know how many other people were actually working on the grid so I figured it was a good bet I wouldn't duplicate others efforts that way.
2) I'm all about the 'changing it up' theory. Because the existing words key around higher rune first, statistically wouldn't it equal out in the long run?
Anyway - I'll dl the updated spreadsheet at home tonight and see if I get a chance to play and test some more. Amazingly enough I used my last El and Eld up - so I'll have to do some more countess runs for lowest runes.
I've also been keeping an eye out for a 5 socket weapon to try pattern - but thus far no luck.

Shaft:

I didn't know those three words were from another list. Are those from the <1.07 beta list? If so, they are probably highly untrustworthy, but I'd be happy to try Patter(n). I lack Thul, Shael, and a 5soc weapon atm, but I'll keep an eye out.

Dan:

Fair points all. I have one each of El-Ral, Sol, and Dol set aside for testing, and I'll use all of them, firstrune>secondrune, when I next log on (again, hopefully tonight). Reports then.

Kenny-Z's round 8 question just went up. The text:

Kenny-Z said:
Ceru was last round's winner.

The next question:

Who loves to drink but is afraid of water?

And the answer:

Geglash
A fearless, drunken blowhard. He is afraid of one thing however, Water, and he will not go near it or ships for any reason.

Again, we have a seven-letter answer, which is difficult to interpret, to be sure. Interesting to note, however, that the only capitalized term in the answer's description is "Water," which is one of the heretofore inactive runewords. Coincidence, or confirmation that Kenny's trivia questions are hints, after all?

yo

Does Kenny Z work for Blizzard? Also... why doesn't anyone seem to answer my questions ever? Oh and if someone wants to co-ordinate with me purely for rune attempts let me know, i'm currently testing some out myself. nothing major, nothing higher than Io although I did read that you guys said to test up between Mal and Zod. My big question is that, even if Kenny G gives us hints to the name of the runewords, how does that help us make a runeword, the old 1.07 list seems faulty and nobody's figured out the correlation between the runeword name and the actual runewords used yet?

i feel totally left out from this thread but i want to help, is there something i can do?

If you don't have the runes for the 1.07 list, you can help out with the two-socket armor grid. Check the spreadsheet to see what's been tested already. Do Countess runs for easy low and low-mid level runes.

On another note, I did get to one run-through of Normal Cows last night and I found two runes on that run, an El and a Ral. The only downside is that Cows takes longer than Countess runs, but I think it's worth doing. Keep up the good work everyone; I'll try to add more armor attempts later.

EDIT: Wathombe, if Water is indeed an activated runeword, it'll take quite a while to get tested.....:/

Farmer:

Yes, Kenny-Z is a moderator on the Diablo II forums at battle.net. I'm sorry you feel like no one is answering your questions; when you asked about the quizzes yesterday morning I answered you immediately. Here's the link in case you missed it:

http://forums.rpgforums.net/showthread.php?p=2337837#post2337837

I mention that the answer includes "Water" simply because it may mean the answer includes a hint to the correct recipe for the runeword "Water," which is one of the inactive runewords on our 1.07 list. The recipe in our list includes Zod, I believe, so it would be quite good to find that the actual recipe is much lower.

As for helping, just keep following the thread, pick the theory you think makes the most sense (or make up your own and post it), then go hunt for runes and items, test the theories, and post your results here. atm, we're testing random combinations <=Io in 2soc armors.

Wathombe, if Water is indeed an activated runeword, it'll take quite a while to get tested.....:/

Unless, of course, the EthOhmZodIo recipe is incorrect, and the correct recipe is instead suggested by "Geglash" or something else in that answer.

If we remove the second "g" from the acronym "geglash" (going by the perceived "no doubled runes" rule), we would get:

Gul El/Eld/Eth Lum/Lem/Lo Amn So/Shael/Sur Hel

WAY too many multiple runes (not to mention that Gul) to test that easily.

Also, we can anagram El, Shael, and Hel from "geglash," but no two or three together.

That's the best I've come up with so far.
