Hey everyone !

I've been thinking about some kind of tournament, and after months of hesitations and simulations, I end up with this.
I know it's a huge thing, very long term, and some rules (like game progression) may discourage a lot of players, but at least I'll give it a try myself, and your remarks and thoughs will be welcome !
I'm not found of the title, but I had to find one (new suggestions are welcome too :cool: )



Tournament Rules


Presentation

The tournament is played with a family of 7 Diablo 2 LoD characters (one of each class for a more challenging experience, or not) who progress through the game at the same speed.
Every family member starts the game with limited abilities.
As they progress in the game, they will unlock new abilities for their whole family.

The aims is to get as many patriarchs / matriarchs as possible in your family following the tournament rules, and get the most Points at the end of it (see scoring section).


General Rules

1 - LOD 1.13 / 1.14 tournament, all runewords allowed

2 - Softcore characters who retires upon first death, or Hardcore characters (though HC characters may be unable to use some Ability scrolls).

3 - Untwinkled characters : can only use items from their game (unless in-game modification). Using mule is allowed to have an extended stash, but each character may have his own mule.

4 - Replaying act is allowed under conditions, see the section below for details

5 - /players 1 (unless in-game modification)

6 - Emergency Save & Exit is not explicitly forbidden, but should be avoided. If you use it anyway, you must renter-game at the same location of your exit.


Game progression

7 - A character can start an act only if every living member of his family has also finished the previous act : for eg., no one can starts Act II Normal before every other living member of the family have killed Andariel.

8 - A character starting and act must go through the entire act without replaying areas (single pass). You can run from a WP to an uncleared area when starting a new game session. You can skip areas, you don't have to kill every monster on the map, or complete every quest, but you have to get through the act to the end before switching to another character.

9 - When a character starts an act, all previous acts are forbidden for the whole family, except to get quest rewards in town

10 - There is no particular order between characters. A player can start an act with the character he wants.

11 - Replaying Acts : Once every living family member cleared an act, and before anyone starts next act, you can chose to replay as many times as you like the act you just cleared (and this one only) with any of your character ONCE YOUR FAMILY HAS THIS ABILITY.
Replaying an act doesn't mean running the final boss or a small area over and over.
To prevent this, each replay session had an in-game cost.
Re-running characters cannot kill again final act monsters (unless in-game modification).

12 - Cow Level is considered as an optional act 6. You gain nothing by clearing this act. This one cannot be rerunned, because of game limitations (the necessity to have wirt's leg to open the level).
If a player decides to clear the cow level, he has to do it with every character, and make sure he previously saved one wirt's leg for each of his family's character.

Character basic abilities

13 - Each character starts the game with strictly limited abilities :
- can equip and use any normal (white), socketed or ethereal item. As long as item doesn't need to be identified to be used.
- can talk to NPC
- can repair, buy, sell or gamble items
- can drink any potion
- can use Town Portal and Identify scrolls
- can ask Cain to identify items
- can stock items in his inventory (except identified charms !), or in his stash / mule
- apply specific quest rewards including a NPC : Larzuk's socket, Name and Imbue item, drink potions, etc. EXCEPT Respec quest
- can use the horardic cube for quest purpose (staff of king, khalim's flair) and to open the Cow level

14 - So each character cannot :
- use skill points or attribute points
- equip any identified item or carry any identified charm
- can insert gems or runes into socketed items
- use the horadric cube outside quest purpose
- hire or give equipment to a mercenary
- make anything is not listed in the allowed starting abilities above


Improving Family Abilities

15 - You can improve your characters abilites during the tournament, by the mean of Ability scrolls and Wisdom Token

16 - Wisdom Token :
A player wins 3 Wisdom Token (WT) each time one of his character kills one of these Unique monsters :
The Countess, the Invocator, Stormtree, Hephasto the Armorer, Pindleskin (only the first kill).
Wisdom Token are spent to activate the effect of every Ability scroll the player owns.
Each player starts the tournament with 0 WT.
At the end of the tournament, unused WT will help to calculate the player final score

17 - Ability scrolls :
A (virtual) collection of 155 scrolls can be found in game by your characters, and used to improve all family members' abilities
Each player starts the contest with 7 ability scrolls in his stash, taken from the Starting Deck (see the Deck section)
A player gains 1 Ability Scroll each time one of his character finished an Act. This scroll is picked randomly in the Ability Scroll Deck.
An ability scroll in the player's stash has no effect. It has to be played (at the cost of Wisdom Token) to grant its effect to the family.
Each scroll is unique, so a scroll (its ID number) cannot be dropped twice BUT two scrolls can have the same description and may have a cumulative effect, so they may be both used : (for eg. Using 2 scrolls allowing to wear an unique item will allow you to wear 2 unique items)
Each scroll played is destroyed, and gives an ability to the whole family.
Once a scroll is activated, it cannot be unactivated and go back to the player's stash.

18 - Using ability scrolls :
A player can use 1 ability scroll when he wants as long as he pays its requirement, or can be saved for later use
The player use it to improve each of his characters equipment ability, skills, or attributes, following the ability sheet below.
Its effect is immediately gained by the whole family.

19 - A (virtual) deck of 155 scrolls is available, scrolls 1 to 7 are part of the starting deck each player owns when starting the tournament
Their effect can be related to your family Attribute, Skills, Equipement, or affect the gameplay or even your Ability Scrolls

Some really cool ideas from what I've read so far! Adding new mechanics to the game rather than just restrictions is a neat idea. Also looking forward to seeing the whole deck, hints in the info already posted makes it sound very interesting.

For clarity, do you mean that each character must have their own (separate) mule? That's how I understood it but better safe than sorry.

Are there any restrictions on skills granted from items with regards to unlocking skills with ability scrolls? Like +3 to raise skeleton on a wand if I don't have that skill unlocked on a necro. Or maybe even a staff with teleport charges on a non-sorc?

Maybe try over explain all ability scrolls to avoid confusion (you can try them out on me. If I understand, most people should think it's crystal clear :p)
For example, scrolls with ID 6 and 7 are very clear to me on how they apply both over the whole family and when used multiple times. On ID 1-5 it's not as clear to me. Are they for 1 character or the whole family? Does ID 1-2 open up that ability forever. Is ID3-5 bound to the item, the item slot, or the character? Ie can I change what magical item my character has equipped?

A very big project for sure! But unlike @Grisu I only have a single character since my restart, so I might be joining to have a side project from my sorc, and getting some other classes to hell (hopefully) as a bonus.

Edit: I would also require some clarification on aquiring WT's. Some examples would be nice :p

Absolutely, there are scrolls affecting gameplay, see the deck section, now complete

About rerunning acts, it was one point I had doubts, it is allowed when you play the right scroll, and each time you chose to rerun an act with a player will cost you Wisdom Token (so that replaying act cannot be infinite).

3 WT earned each time one of your character kills (on first try, not during rerun sessions) the specified monster.
So when your 7 chars have killed The Countess, you have earned 21 tokens.

Yes, that's a very long term and time consuming tournament, unless you die early :D

My whole point was to make the first acts tougher, to introduce some strategy, and some random action.

Yeah making the first countess kill will be a tough task with no vitality and without dying. I think throwing javelins and strangling gas potions will be very useful here!

I think I understand and yes seeing the rest of the deck helps understanding. Some examples would be helpful I think(like your example with set items above), but when adding a bunch of rules/features I thinks it’s inevitable that there will be some confusing situations that will need ruling as-you-go :)

Edit: a couple more Qs: scrolls that let you buy new scrolls, means you take new random scrolls from the deck right? You don’t get to choose whichever scroll you want?

I looked 3 times now so sorry if I missed it somehow, but is there no way to be able to play at increased /players x at all?

Don't know if this tournament is wel balanced, truly. For that part I can answer, it's possible, I already realized this to make sure it was not impossible. I didn't do it that way, even if there are not many options I guess (begin with a sorceress with zero skill and no vita may be a real challenge :cool: )

Each time you pick a scroll, you take it randomly from the pool.

/players x is available with scroll 144 (only 1 scroll, it can be really late in the game)...

But yeah, zarf is right - first task will be tough. Without stats/skills and only white items you have to defeat the countess in ordert to get your first three WT...so gameplay will probably be:

1. get one char to countess
2. choose basic scroll (probably 7 or 1)
3. get another char to countess
4. choose another basic scroll (e.g.6 after 7 or something like that)
5. get another character to countess
etc.

your basic scrolls are also pickable only once, I guess?

Also, it's good that we have to take random rolls on the scrolls, otherwise it would be a chore to go through all 155 to see what fits the best xD

Huh? That really isn't apparent from the wording. It wouldn't be replaying if I used a Barb till Countess, then started an Assassin and played till the Countess again, would it?

As far as your answer goes: so I'd first habe to defeat Andariel with character 1 in order to start Act I with character 2?
Then it is probably a really big nuisance to finish Act I - watching your merc kill everything for you... Hmm, I'm curious how your current try will be in regards to that. :)

I agree that you should add something like "... before any other character can start the act" if that is the intention.
