2018 Spring RFL Sign-Up and Running Thread: 2nd Round

@drmalawi that is definitely useful! Took me forever until I found a +5 Tornado pelt, and yours even has life and Armageddon. Nice!

@maxicek Haha, it makes me feel nauseous as well, though mostly because of all those misclicks. ;) Actually gameplay looks much smoother when not recording (with QuickTime that is). After @Kitteh suggested OBS earlier I recorded a few runs with it and they are a lot prettier to look at for sure, but not going to spam this thread with vids ;) maybe towards the end of her set when she's hopefully improved to consistent sub 19s runs!

I managed 5.5 hours so far. First couple of decent drops rolling in:

I believe the Tal orb is my first 2/2/2 actually. Eschuta's was +2/17/17 and Wolfhowl 6/4/6. Apart from that, two facets so far (4/3 fire and 3/4 cold), and +62 life Waterwalk.

Let's see some more loot people!

Just managed my quickest run yet on the Sorc. Then accidentally pressed N instead of H. Now not sure if to bother re-rolling the map or just run with the Barb.

It wasn’t great, but good enough to be annoying to re-roll.

I run on a Win2000 VM and for some reason killing Game.exe doesn’t work.

Been meaning to share some thoughts on the topic of stragglers and when to kill them. From my runs personally I'd say that, after most of the council is dead and the dust settles, roughly about 3 out of 10 times there are mobs running around that require more than one or two Ice Blast shots to finish off. I've always wondered whether those "doubtful cases" are worth finishing off or should be skipped.

Obviously, every situation is different and requires its own call. But to get an idea of the consequences of skipping vs not skipping them, I quickly ran the numbers for 10 minute samples, based on 20s and 25s runs with Blizzard Sorc for sake of comparison:

Guesstimating from my runs personally, the assumption is that there are 3 stragglers that are shaky candidates (e.g. you're not sure whether it's efficient to kill them) in 10 runs. I've ignored the unbreakable CI boss rolls as they don't make a difference for this and are generally skipped in any case.

For 20s runs:

Skipping:
10 minutes = 600s / 20s = 30 runs
21x full 11 kills = 231
9x 10 kills = 90
= 321 kills

Not skipping, extra 3s to kill straggler (along the lines of full health boss)
21x 20s, 9x 23s = 20.9s average (20*0.7) + (23*0.3)
~28.71 runs * 11
= 315 kills

Not skipping, extra 2s to kill straggler (along the lines of half health boss or full health minion)
21x 20s *0.7 =14s, 9x 22s = 198, = 20.6s average
29.13 runs
= 320 kills

For 25 second runs:

Skipping:
600/25 = 24 runs = 16.8*11= 184.5 kills + 7.2*10 72 kills = total of ~257 kills

Not skipping, adding 3s:
Runs: 16.8 * 25s + 7.2 *28s = average 25.9s => 600/25.9s = 23.17; *11 = 254.87 kills

Not skipping, adding 2s:
Runs: 16.8 * 25s + 7.2 *27s = average 25.6s => 600/25.6s = 23.44; *11 = 257.81 kills

Edit: Added 18s runs to comparison. Here there's about a 2% difference in case of extra 2 seconds already.

For 18 second runs:

Skipping:
600/18 = 33.33 runs (23.33 * 11 kills, 10* 10 kills) = 356.64 kills

Not skipping, adding 3s:
Runs: 23.33 * 18s + 10* 21s = average 18.9s => 600/18.9s = 31.75 runs; *11 = 349 kills

Not skipping, adding 2s:
Runs: 23.33 * 18s + 10*20s = average 18.6s => 600/25.6s = 32.26; *11 = 354.84 kills (

Conclusion: Generally it doesn't make too much of a difference at all. As a rule of thumb though, for ~20s running and 3/10 runs having stragglers, killing them if it only adds up to 2 seconds to the run is still worth it. If it takes longer it begins to be less efficient than skipping. For longer runs, added run time by finishing them off can slightly higher. Edit: Added 18s to comparison, which shows that the faster the runs, the more efficient it is to skip them.

You can close the program via task manager and the new maps won't be saved. It's what I do when I'm running an area and accidentally choose the wrong difficulty.

Edit: oops, didn't see your second comment.

That crap is why I don't risk using the keyboard. H and N had to be right next to each other...

@drmalawi Definitely you should go for another set with Blizzy! I sent you a Death's Fathom after all, the least you can do is finding a couple of Chams with it! ;) Kidding aside, personally I'm going for one set only this time, want to get back to my untwinked 99ers. Btw cool to see you running with Zealot, I've been meaning to take my 2h Zealot to Travincal as well. Maybe after RFL, during tournaments like this I just try to be as fast as I can.

In that regard: Round 2 goal accomplished! Recording below even though I didn't mean to spam. :p Got her to ~19.2s first and eventually ~18s runs today. After running the numbers (see earlier post) I overcame my OCD and no longer have to kill every straggler, knowing I don't lose out in terms of efficiency. 18.15 seconds average in the batch below (13 runs, actual running 3m56s). She skipped 4 council members, pretty close to the estimate of leftover stragglers in my earlier post (3 per 10 runs). On this map at least, I don't think I can run any faster, and she only gets into the 18s region when literally picking up nothing apart from runes. It also takes a lot of concentration -- no way that's sustainable for an extended period of time or 20 hours even. :) But good to know she can do it.

Cool to see the videos from different people. Now that I'm more comfortable with the runs, I'll record one batch of Rowena's runs to contribute to the thread. It's a standard blizz sorc, but with 1/10 amulet because I still don't a 2/10 with any useful mods.

I've had stretches with ~20 sec/run average where I timed a 5 min stretch, but I think I'm averaging closer to 24-25 sec because I really can't focus for that long! :rolleyes: I don't run more than 10 minutes straight for that reason. We'll see if I make through the full set with this approach. This is emblematic of my rune luck so far:

For now, I'm skipping gems and only picking up blue jewels and SC/GC if I spot them on a quick scan. So only interesting set/uniques, rare rings and jewels, and Ko+ to keep things focused.

Rowena is 5 hours in, with a 3.5 hour stretch with nothing higher than a Lum that tested the patience. Other finds are meh, with the highlight below:
