Well the two entrants with outstanding final results seem to have not been around since the RFO started, so I elected to not make everyone wait for them. If you two have results, you can still feel free to send them and I'll add them to the list and make a post and all that jazz.

In the spirit of the event I will troll you just a little further, but believe me it is in your best interest. Clicking the following spoiler has been shown to cause heart attacks, strokes and mind-blowage, so enter at your own risk.

I mean it, you alone are responsible for any injuries suffered beyond this point.

Well, remember when we all trolled Grip about how easily he'd crush everybody and how he was guaranteed to win? Yeah, maybe we should not have done that. On the plus side, last year after an inhuman performance in the MFO he put in a remarkably human showing in the RFO (at least comparing it to the current lot, in which my winning score from last year would rank 9th) so perhaps everyone should pile in on the next MFO in hopes of defeating the Croatian Juggernaut?

For anyone having troubles with the spoiler inside a spoiler above, I've also posted the results in a code box later on.

Thanks to Gripphon for coming up with the tournament and providing the rules and all. Thanks to all the participants for your hard work, and for getting your results in so quickly. I've left off those who reported having no qualifiers, either by PM or forum post, so please let me know if I'm in error on that.

This was a cool event and I'm glad to have been part of it, and especially glad to have had the behind the scenes view of events as they unfolded (it was really cool as we neared the end seeing the top spot get passed around and having to shuffle the list around). Congratulations to everyone not only on your finds, but on just hanging in there for some runs and, hopefully, having some fun.

See you all next RFO!

Gul: 36
Ist: 18
Ohm: 22 (no one who found an Ohm found only 1)
Vex: 24
Sur: 13
Lo: 16
Jah: 13
Ber: 6
Cham: 10

Plus a single Mal from 1.07 (only scrcrw and pharphis ran 1.07, and scr split his time).

We can compare those to last year's totals:

Runes from whole RFO*:

Um 18 (2)
Mal 27 (1)
Ist 16
Gul 5
Vex 14 (1)
Ohm 4
Lo 4
Sur 3
Ber 3
Jah 6
Cham 3

*Inside brackets are number of runes from 1.07.

And see that Ber is trying very hard to make a case as the rarest rune from Travincal.

Most repetition on a single rune: 8x, Gul
Highest-end sequence in a set: Ber, Jah, Cham
Longest contiguous sequence: Mal-Sur

Based on the numbers reported to me I estimate roughly 470 total hours run in the RFO (I don't have complete confidence in that number, but I think it's representative enough based on feeling pretty sure about most people's times, though it does assume two people did not run at all) which works out to a little over 18 hours per entrant. An impressive effort, all around.

Great work everyone. Thanks for helping out with this maareek, and thanks for putting this on Gripphon. Two people rockin' three sets? You guys are animals, that's crazy.
I was very pleased to see how many people ran, and how high the results were pushed this time. Was a pleasure and congrats to all.
I think you mixed up the order of ohm and vex in your rune count list :D

No qualifiers. Not surprised ;(
I don't know if this is a worse feeling than 3x templar's and scoring worse than Thyiad in previous MFO...

Uniques and sets: nothing worth mentioning

P Gems: 1007

I ran pretty slowly tbh. First set was with Zealot (fail). I noticed about halfway through that he had a Prayer merc, as he was born years ago as a Hammerdin. Too lazy to change it and reroll map, so I dealt with it. Switched to Barb for 2nd and 3rd set, and qualifiers started to appear more frequently. My goal going in was 2x Jah to make a couple of dreams... fail. I can barely cube up to 1x Jah. :| I just used the timer on my iPhone and didn't do run times, knowing they'd be ugly and discouraging. Still, would've liked to have seen at least 1 qualifier above Sur in 60 hours...

I picked up gems, jewels, charms, rare claws, and assorted other stuff. I also cubed as I went, not stopping the timer until it was time to mule. Also, Grip cheats.

Wow. Great work everyone. And it's uncanny: I've never seen a picture of maareek until Grip posted those, but he looks exactly how I've always pictured.
Congrats to all.

Could we restart now for an evening? I've got nothing to do except sit here at work so I could run ...
Gongrats on your finds everyone! Expect to see some new shiny runewords in the IFT soon. :)

Gripphon just set a record that will be very hard to beat in the future RFO(s). Absolutely incredible score there!
Congrats Grip. No surprise of course!

Glad we had so many players and so much tryhards.

I'm ok with placing third behind One True God. Not shame in being beaten by God, alright? Kinda surprised that I managed to place so high without Cham or Ber found, but I guess quantity > quality for RFO.
Gratz on insane performance/luck/paint skillz grip. Well deserved.

2 x BKWB were only notable uniques, and 12max/12allress jewel was only decent one.

I think moral of the story is that Blizzard sorc are best build at running trav. Barbs are outdated! Sorcs are very safe characters when built properly and I encourage everyone to try them. No clogging with items on ground, very safe, very fast and very easy to play once you get basics of character.
No deaths, NDEs, one merc death due to no BO in 3500 runs.

Tnx Grip for hosting this event and maareek for doing the dirty work. It has been fun, frustrating and I hope to see you next time at Nulio Rocks.

Allow me to tell you my story of this RFO.

Set 1:
Well it was ordinary set overall, with slight annoyance at one part, I had between 900 and 1000 runs without qualifier in this set. That is very unlucky streak and it took me almost 5 hours to get out of it. I was very annoyed since last RFO I had even worse, 7 hours without qualifier. To connect that unlucky streak to this sorc of mine, that would be like near 1200 runs without qualifier. Luckily rest of the set was kind enough to drop me a total of 15 qualifiers which is slightly below expectations as is my final score of the set. Didn't find top 3 high qualifiers, but oh well. Overall quite good set, found fine of good luck and fine of vita here so I had horses for race at non-qualifiers stuff at least.

Set 2:
This is where fun began. Got Sur and Ohm first day of starting set, which was nice start. Second day was first highlight of RFO. Started with Vex dropping, 1 hour later first Cham and finally Lo dropped as last high rune of the day. I was very happy to find my first Cham on RFO ever and thought this could be first set where I might actually have at least average luck, and not below average like last 3 sets provided. I also experienced my first RFO death in second day of second set. Next day started with a bang, second Cham dropped inside first half hour of playing for that day. I thought to myself WOW, another Cham, am I lucky or what. This set is looking better and better. Can I aim for some epic score? This all happened inside first 2k runs of second set. Naturally other stuff dropped too, but who will memorize all the Ums and Guls and stuff.

Then came another shocker. OK, day started quietly, I think here was the point of approximately 500 runs without qualifier, and then Vex dropped. Nice. 1 hour later came that shocker aka best screenshot of RFO. Double event, as people from Pacific Rim would say.
1596684084657.png

This was also my last high rune of second set that ended as pleasant surprise. As interesting information, on half point of this set my score was in ~120 range already, so second part of the set got me 80 score worth to get to 200+. I finally had set above expectations aka lucky set for me. And 2 Chams too, great! I'm very happy, let's end this RFO at once.

But nooooooooo. 8k runs was done till that point, and 10k seemed like beautiful target. 3 days till the end, to go for it or not? I will go for it I decided, don't know will I do this again during RFO and lets use this opportunity to do it! And so it began...

Set 3
Set I call freak of the nature, or set on steroids if you like. Second set was on high lucky side, but nothing extremely overpowered. But this third set... it defies logic, math and statistics. Not de facto, but this set was obviously ridiculous and honestly I had slight dilemma whether or not to report it because how monstrous it looks. But decided with some thinking and suggestions (ty guys) it would be stupid not to report such thing, even if it seems ridiculous, hardly believable and overpowered beyond measure.

Set started kind of quiet actually. Ok, not THAT quiet, first qualifier Mal dropped inside 60 runs, but until 450 runs I found nothing else. And then magic started. From 450th run till 2000th run is one of most ridiculous things I've seen in diablo career. Let us go step by step now. Unfortunately I didn't memorize drops of Vex- runes, but they did drop along with high runes naturally, but I can only guess when something dropped since I didn't write it on paper.

13:32 Lo dropped
1596684102391.png

13:49 Vex made appearance
1596684115264.png

Talking about great start, already 30+ points and not even 500 runs done. Here I took slight pause since I started running before 11. And then before 500th run tick:

14:26 Jah dropped
1596684126539.png

It was first mentioning of god with this drop. After having that second set, it was quite pleasant surprise to get another one of big boys. Also having quite high score below 500 runs meant one thing, I must finish this set and hope for the best. Set didn't disappoint me.

14:41 Ohm
1596684137976.png

Ok, this set is looking really good, got 3 good runes quite quickly and I have even more reason to go all out and finish this set! What I didn't know is beast waited for me next.

15:02 Cham, third on RFO!
1596684152272.png

Holy jesus god! That was my reaction on this drop. Third Cham this RFO, what a the odds? That's it, this set is going full 20 hours, no excuses. I play for the rest of the day to use all my luck while it lasts.

There was no quiet period yet, this set was on fire and lower qualifiers dropped all the time as I ran. Until another drop happened that made my jar drop. Second Cham of the set, fourth of RFO. How, what, why?! Is this for real?!

17:42 Cham no. 2
1596684171986.png

This is just insane. I thought it is perhaps map thing, don't know. Chams are dropping like Mals lol. At this point I had more Chams than Ists on whole RFO. Ridiculous. This are not done just yet!

18:34 Ohm made appearance
1596684184133.png

Now it followed slightly quiet period. Not deaf quiet, but not period on steroids like it was until that point. And then toward the end of the day and I think it was at ~1700th run of the day, another big boy dropped.

23:16 Jah no 2.
1596684195115.png

Another mentioning of gods name. I mentioned his name enough time to become a believer! Second Jah?! Two Chams?! Seriously?! WTF. That was my reaction. I must keep going, my luck is obviously insane right now and must use all of it. I played till like 2 am with pauses until I finally stopped.

First day of third set: finished 2000 runs, played for 11 hours, had 13 qualifiers drop of which 8 were Vex+. That equals my previous record where I also found 8 Vex+ runes in 24 hour period, also in Travincal. But this was freak of the nature of the set so far, nothing I've seen before. My score at halfway point was... 166.9 if I remember correctly. Yes, freaking 166.9 after 11 hours of playing.

Amusing this was, this set looked a lot like second set, like a twin brother, until second Jah dropped. I thought I could have exactly same set twice! Yeah right, but it would be amusing for sure.

Second day was quiet one and I also experienced second most unluckiest streak this RFO here, it was ~650 runs without a qualifier. But like I care with drops from first day, I'm already super happy and will finish the set satisfied. Ok, I did want to get another 200+ score set and this one was meant to be. During second day I did 950 runs and found 3 qualifiers in it.

Third and last day of third set and also of RFO. This set obviously took rest day and now it was ready to explode again! I still battled to get 200+ score and hoped I will make it. Well, it didn't take too long for nice qualifier to show its face yet again:

12:20 Vex
1596684217150.png

Talking about nice start and crossing of 200 points! Hell yeah, I did it and still have like 900 runs left till the end of the set!

And then, Harry Potter stuff happened yet again. It was like 3300 runs into the set and like 600 runs before the end. BAM!

14:27 Cham no. 3
1596684229978.png

My reaction? I stood up from the chair and asked out loud "How is this possible?". I was shocked, me who sold more runes than I used in my diablo career, I was shocked with rune drop. Lol. Third Cham? Fifth this RFO? Sixth inside 12k runs if we include that Cham before RFO that I tossed on ground? I took calculator and wanted to know what a the odds to find 5 Chams in 12k runs. It so happens to be ~1.8%. If we seek to know what is probability to find at least 5 Chams instead of exactly 5, it could be 2% or more. So, this even happens once in 50 RFOs to someone who does 12k runs. Insane. I thought probability will be less than that since this kind of probability actually rivals the one to not find qualifier in 1000 runs, which is interesting.

Also at this point I felt really ridiculous for having that kind of luck. I almost feared to find yet another Cham in next 600 runs because they obviously drop at insane rate these days. What would people think when they see one set with 2 Chams and one set with 3 Chams? Should I report this freak of set to scores or not? Well, I asked myself stupid questions, I'm just sharing my thoughts process here.

I didn't yet know this set didn't produce everything it had in store for me. Let us continue, shall we?

It was now quiet period with runes in general... Until last 300 runs. Freakshow started yet again there!

18:09 Lo rune
1596684253536.png

Wow, yet another high rune. Amazing. Will this set finally end? No, it won't, in fact now it will produce insanity in number of qualifiers in short amount of runs. It didn't take long to find big boy yet again.

18:33 Jah rune no. 3
1596684266078.png

I think at that point I still had like 200 runs till the end. I don't have to mention I again called gods name when Jah dropped, right? I felt incredibly ridiculous. This set is on freaking steroids and it doesn't end. What is next, Cham and Ber on same run? How this set looked like, I wouldn't be surprised if I saw that. Nothing could surprise me anymore. Another Cham in 200 runs? NP. Ber? Why not. Let us continue and see what will happen.

What happened is I didn't find any of big boys yet again (luckily lol), but number of qualifers along with Lo and Jah in 300 runs? Man. Insanity. I think total count of qualifiers in that period was 6, which means I found qualifier once per 50 runs. What in the world. Statistics, math, they are all wrong.

Set ended, I lost count of qualifiers I found, I didn't know how my score looked like, I just had idea where I am. And then when I looked in stash... holy lord, what is this? 1..2...3... 26 freaking qualifiers in this set. 26! Expectation for my sorc is in range of 16, but 26! Insanity. I don't know what to think. Hey, lets finally count score. 292 points. WHAT! I thought I'm in 280 region, but not at reach of freaking 300 points. ROFL. Talking about set on drugs.

Superman of sets indeed. It won't happen again. Ever. I mean that thing is a monster, I'm losing words to describe it. You thought "WTF is this even possible?" when you saw my third set? Exactly that I thought after finishing it, and I did whole running. How is this possible? What if I continued running in fourth set, would I found another 5 Chams this time? Or 5 Jahs? I mean I felt ridiculous and this set was ridiculous.

I died with sorc during that set too, but who cares. I was tired as hell, and those insane drops kept me going and going without stopping. Would you stop? Neither would I and didn't, went till the end.

Also started fourth set just to do 55 runs to complete 12k runs for RFO since my time was worse in this third set due to exhaustion and unplayable atmosphere around with hot days and such.

This is my whole RFO with sorc:

1596684275630.png

Don't let total playing time fool you, I didn't overreach 20 hours, simply do number of runs * avg time. Total time included cubing gems and stuff when I didn't do running at all. I will upload haulpics etc, don't worry.

1223 jewels total of which 30 are rainbow facets, 198 are rare jewels and 995 are magic jewels

That day farmed 332 pgems, 13 qualifiers, 2 Jah and 2 Cham runes. Recordbreaking day of d2 for me.

Only thing left to do is to find Ber rune. Ber doesn't exist confirmed. Actually Ber is true Cham of RFO!

Nice effort everyone and very good scores out there. Tons of runes were farmed this RFO indeed. Runes confirmed lol once again! Also you don't need LK to find runes, Travi works too!

Grip, that third set of yours is just... wow. I can't... I'm speechless.

Huge congratulations!

At some point I though if I had actually finished the 20 hours I'd be somewhere in the top three, lol silly me.
@Gripphon this RFO will be SPF legend. You took the game to a whole new level.

As for me I'm just happy I finally got my Enigma and Grief! Now comes the hard part, where to use that Cham...
the answer is ALWAYS zod god if it is a cham+ rune
Congratulations! Gripphon and LQ beat me twice xD

Thanks to Gripphon for getting the wheels turning and thanks to Maareek for supervising!

Did i mention my score was just a late entry from last year?

Astonishing that beating last years winning score only got me to 8th place. Didn't think it was enough to win, but i did think i'd end up higher than this.

The story of my RFO:

Set 1:
Rough start. About 4,5 hrs in before the first qualifier dropped. Q2 was much better. Horked a sur and also found ber. Started to think this could turn out well after all. That hope got crushed quickly by another dry streak during Q3. The last quarter made up for it a bit, by horking a ber in the last 15 mins of the set. At that point i wasn't that hapy with it. I thought it might've been better if that dropped early on in the second session. Still after counting score i found out i beat last years winner. So not as bad as i thought it was.

Set 2:
Started out great. After first 7,5 hrs my score was like 70. Now i really wished that ber had waited to drop in second set. After that i hit a dry streak. And it was much bigger than either of them during the first 20 hrs. Didn't find a single qualifier for somewhere close to 900 runs. Which meant any hope i had of having a good score totally disappeared. Near the end i horked a ber (yes i horked sur and 2 ber) and found a few lower qualifiers. That at least made the score bearable.

Overall running started out rough. Didn't practise beforehand and it showed during first half hour or so. Also had my first and only death there. Despite having died (no recovery) i did gain like half a lvl (@94). First set ended with 1589 runs (average of 45,3s). Second set shaved off a good 3 seconds on average. After about 12 hrs i rerolled maps to try and get councils in the first area. This shaved off another ~0,3s. I think i did 130 or 140 runs more than first set (i'd have to check, but at work now). Average of second set was sub 42s. Didn't help though. More runs, lesser score.

With better map and a bit of gear switching i think i could improve on second set.

Funny to see that i single handedly got half the bers that dropped during RFO. Bers however do seem to be a bad omen in this RFO because with 8th place i'm the highest ber finder. None of the first 7 found even 1! Still i'm happy with them because they were the rune i needed the most.

Sure, with those drops everyone would do 3 sets.

Should've asked me. I would've told you not to report this. :p

For next RFO i was planning on looking to improve my barb some. But after Griph's showing i may need to see how my sorc does (and i bet i'm not the only one that's gonna try that ;)). Probably won't be doing another one this year though as we still have MFO upcoming and this RFO thing means my 98 necro doesn't move for a whole 2 weeks.

Screenshots will have to wait till i get home.

Gripphon and Maareek thanks for hosting and keeping track of scores. Hope to see all runners again next time.

The next question is how many Tyrael's Mights will Grip find in the MFO?

I had my hot streak in the beginning: Cham after 30 minutes and Ber at 45 minutes. Made me change my equipment from gold finding to killing speed. Then it was a downhill for the rest of the time. Long dry streaks and no big runes. :D
Congrats to all the crazy people here! Amazing achievs and godly scores!

I am now only a mortal, I can live out the rest of my days in peace knowing that Gripphon is watching over me (hmm this a bit creepy...), well just showing when help is needed (yeah this is better).

The GC drop made my RFO, rest was meh-ish. Oh wait... LIQUIDCLEAR I GOT A JAH AND YOU DIDN'T! TAKE THAT :p
You stole my luck and I couldn't really compete with my loading times and lazymap. So yeah... Afterhorkers suck, Crosorcs rule!

With p7 and avg ~31s with sorc, what was my expected score, etc?
In terms of standard deviations I think your winning set is less likely because the difference between it and the expected score is bigger than that and your 65.7 score
I enjoyed reading about that last set, Gripphon. The outliers are always cool when the come out on the positive side. I tend to be very pessimistic and never expect anything of that sort to happen in general life, much less in a game, so it's very cool to see it when it happens, and the overall performance on the RFO from everyone re-inspires me to come at the game with a renewed hope.
even meeee?
Anyone running 1.07 Trav inspires me. Someday I'm going to quite being lazy, install that D2 version switcher, and become a real man.

It is interesting to compare things with last RFO. Apart from having less participants ofc. I'm going to make comparison based on my scores at last RFO and this RFO.

Last RFO did 2 sets, one of them scored 65.7, other scored 112.3. When you compare those sets with sets from this RFO, difference is obvious, even incredible. Someone might think I have got much better since last RFO and now rocked the world with my sorc. The answer is no, I was pretty much same player before I am now.

My expected score last RFO was in region of 155 points with expectation to find between 15 and 16 qualifiers in 20 hours of playing. This RFO my expected score was in region of 160 points with expectation to find 16 qualifiers in 20 hours. So this RFO my performance was, at least from efficiency part, only miserable 3% better than on last RFO. So this means, even if I put this sorc of mine in time machine back to previous RFO, I wouldn't break 120 points of score in 2 sets. What made difference is luck, as simple as that. With luck from previous RFO I would end on 9th place this RFO regardless of doing 8000 runs in 2 sets. But luck made all the difference.

But how much luck I talk about here? Let's look at that 65.7 score first. Do you even realize how insane that set was? Imagine this sorc of mine doing 3900 runs with total score of 65.7, that is it. That set was as incredibly freaky as third set of this RFO was, just on the other side of the board aka unlucky side of it. Totally funny score. Lets put it another way. My expected number of qualifiers was 15 in 20 hours, right? I needed to find 13 weakest qualifiers aka Mals to achieve that score. 13 - weakest - while average luck brings 15 qualifiers. Hopefully I made it clearer now how incredible that set was, also one of those sets that shouldn't really happen.

Second set, aka 112.3 score. This score was on very unlucky part as well, scoring ~42 points below expectations. So we talk about 2 really unlucky, one insanely unlucky and one very unlucky set from last RFO.

This RFO. First set was on unlucky side, scoring 133.1 when expected score was 160, which is ~27 points below average. But is normal, this set falls under 68% of all results aka inside first standard deviation of normal distribution. So this set was overall normal.
Second set scored 202.2 points, which is 42.2 points above average. If my math is correct, this result is on very edge of first standard deviation so this set was on high side of luck i'd say, but wasn't freaky nor insane nor anything like that, it was highly lucky and that is all, but still normal occurrence.
Third set is a beast obviously with insane luck involved and is above all expectations. I didn't calculate yet how incredible this set was though. To a more interesting note, I do wonder whether this third set was more insane or my first set from previous RFO. My statistical knowledge is too limited to see that at just a glance which of those sets were less likely to happen. Naturally I would say third set of this RFO is less likely to happen cause we all experience dry sessions of running pretty often, so I don't think it is THAT impossible to score 2.4 times below expectations, but who knows. If I happen to calculate that, I will share info.

For example Frozzzen's 171 points score is also high enough on luck scale for his sorc, like 30 points above expectations. But I'm very happy my crobuddy managed to get in top 3 to make sorcs rock this RFO! I see more scores who could be pretty high on luck scale too. See, conclusion is the more players we have, the more lucky sets we will have, pretty logical.
I'm just surprised at Nulio score a little. He did whole 20 hours and... I'm sure his expected score was in 300+ region, I think he took easy on us and shut down his luck for this event. Carelio for otherlio.

I'm not complaining about my final position, in fact I was expecting to end fifth or something. I really enjoyed participating, and I was happy to reach my goal of getting Cham (that Darwin sun was a nice touch Gripph), however the ebotd roll kinda devastated me and wiped away all the good vibes I've had during these months of grinding. I must admit I don't feel like playing D2 anymore, that was demotivating on too many levels... anyway, here's my humble haul pic:

Thanks Gripphon for hosting, maareek for supervising, and the others for competing, gg everyone. See you around maybe.

With p7 and avg ~31s with sorc, what was my expected score, etc?

~ 105 points

Well, remember when we all trolled Grip about how easily he'd crush everybody and how he was guaranteed to win? Yeah, maybe we should not have done that. On the plus side, last year after an inhuman performance in the MFO he put in a remarkably human showing in the RFO (at least comparing it to the current lot, in which my winning score from last year would rank 9th) so perhaps everyone should pile in on the next MFO in hopes of defeating the Croatian Juggernaut?

Allow me to continue that story a little further. My first MFO was pretty good, after that next MFO was bad, then came that fantastic MFO, after that Terrible RFO and after that insane RFO. I guess next is insanely terrible MFO and then insanely insane RFO after that with 500 score etc... Agreed. On a more serious note, I'm not yet sure will I participate on MFO or will I be too lazy at that time. I simply have no real interest in MFO, only in RFO pretty much due to farming reasons.

It is great to see all those haulpics, thanks for sharing them guys. @zticazzy screw the Botd man, even with 350% it is decent and you are gonna love to use it.

Also great supervizing job Maareek, you have put nice effort in everything, even summed runes on RFO, trolled in thread to keep things interesting etc.
Nice hauls everyone, congrats!
Wow, you guys are fkin awesome. ALL OF YOU. I'm currently on a break from D2, but screenshots like those kept me motivated. After my recent Jah (non-RFO) just needed a bit of break, playing something else. My problem is I get burned out fast. I cant realy sit steady 1-2 hours on my ass running Trav. Maybe LK. Not sure how you folks do it...

Cyrax: I'm so confused by this. You word the link this way, giving the impression that most of your runs were similar to the image enclosed, so when I see a pic of a(n effective) dual Ral drop I think "wow, Cyrax must've really enjoyed the runs then!" but then you named the image "No. Just no."

Granted, different opinions for different people, but since Ral is one of the most useful finds from Travincal it's one of the things I am actively glad to see when doing those runs, and if my RFO experience mostly felt like getting 2 Rals per run, then I'd have to conclude I had an absolutely amazing event. I mean this was probably my third favorite moment from the last RFO, behind the Cham(my first of them) and the second Ber (Infinity).

On the one hand I am talking about Rals because I'm addicted to them and they're one of my favorite items in the game, but on the other hand what I'm actually talking about are the small rewards we let ourselves have in a large endeavor to stave off stress and frustration. Running hard for 20 hours looking for just high runes and trying to run as efficiently as possible gets to you over time, especially if you're trying for more than one set, and it's important to give your brain a reason to let go of the stress and even fight back with a little happiness along the way. I can't guarantee a Lo+ rune, but Rals drop frequently enough that I know I'll see a decent amount while still being infrequent enough to be worth noticing and are useful enough to qualify as a good find, so they're my motivator of choice for basically any D2 shindig. The exact reason may differ - for Gripphon this RFO it was facets, for nulio it was pgems, etc. - but just running to win is pretty hopeless overall, especially if you consider that even the mammoth, insane, incredible amount of lucksacking that went into Gripphon's third set could've been put to shame by a single (albeit ridiculously unlikely) qualifier from 1.07, and so I think it helps everyone to have smaller goals to help them stay motivated and excited along the way.

So that started off as me just being like "hey guys I like Rals" in sort of a jokey way, but I decided to turn it into a sort of runner's theory type thing just in case that's helpful to somebody going forward. Like, in D2 and basically anything it pretty much sucks to look at the goal and nothing else, it helps to set up little rewards along the way for yourself. And it's not like anything in D2 is actually important, but some people did mention in their PMs that they stopped running because they got bored and I wanted to take a minute to go over some of the ways those of us who do a lot of runs avoid getting bored. That's not to say that they weren't doing that and just getting bored because they didn't like it (I don't think there's a technique in the world that would keep me from getting bored with LK runs, for instance) but I figured I'd say just a thing or two in the way of maybe helping somebody just in case, since I got on that particular train of thought.

@Cyrax: hopefully none of that comes across as having a go at you about anything, was just making a bit of a joke in your direction and then I sort of meandered off on a tangent (as I'm wont to do.)

@BBS: People do often compare me to a sun baby, and by "often" I mean "never," but I assume that's just because they're afraid it might be taken as an insult. ;p

@Thyiad: I think we should just institute a standing "mini-RFO" policy for slow work days. Highest rune wins.

As for myself: being the supervisor was cool and all, but I sort of wish I would have ran. Of course I would've been crushed under foot by the CroDuo, but without knowing about their insane exploits it would've been fine and given the way things turned out it would've been cool to have personal results to compare between an "unlucky" RFO (which even at the time the last RFO seemed like) and a "lucky" one. It's sort of strange, but good luck and bad luck (or statistical outliers, to give them a less esoteric name) do have a tendency to clump together and comparisons are cool.

Speaking of numbers, I'll spout off a little more about them, in the form of comparing the ones from this RFO to the last one, just because they've been on my mind for awhile now (jeeze, I can't imagine why I've had numbers on the brain recently...).

Code:
Number of competitors with qualifiers (2014): 16
Number of competitors with qualifiers (2015): 26

Total number of runes (2014): 103
Total number of runes (2015): 238

Percentage of scores over 100 in 2014 RFO: 18.75
Percentage of scores over 100 in this RFO: 30.77 (34.62 if you count Cyrax's 99 as close enough.)

Median score (2014): 67.05
Median score (2015): 78.4

Mean score (2014): 62.41
Mean score (2015): 90.20

Most common qualifier, as a percentage of total qualifiers (2014): Mal, 26.21
Most common qualifier, as a percentage of total qualifiers (2015): Um, 19.75

Least common qualifier, as a percentage of total qualifiers (2014): Ber/Sur/Cham, 2.91
Least common qualifier, as a percentage of total qualifiers (2015): Ber, 2.52

After I started to get results in I got somewhat curious and did a little thought experiment about what sort of final standings I might expect in so I went back to the previous RFO and dug around for the amount of time people ran and all that jazz. I ended up guesstimating 15 hours per entrant for that event which I then plotted forward by getting a number of hours per drop for each rune from the 2014 results and ended up with this horribly depressing expectation for this RFO:

Code:
4.3 Chams
8.7Jahs
4.3Bers
4.3Surs
5.8Los
5.8Ohms
20.2Vex
7.2Guls
23.1Ists
39Mals
26Ums
which does outstrip our actual findings in both Mals and Ists but, I think we can all agree, does seem much less exciting than where we ended up, though, to be fair, the average hours per entrant for this event was much closer to 18 than 15 (~470 total hours as opposed to ~390, which still only adds most of a Cham/Sur/Ber, ~1.5 Jahs, etc. based on the numbers I was using).

And, lastly, a heartwarmingly depressing little bit of statistics:
Code:
Gripphon: 166.9 current score at half point. 320 incoming.
maareek: even with 320 that averages out to 166.66 for all the results from both rfos ;p

Gripphon: 320 wont happen ofc :p 200+ might
maareek: yeah, it's not even certain 200+ is more unlikely than 65 if your ev is 165

Actual average for all of his RFO results? 161.18. Basically right in line with the expected value at his run times. I hinted at this post I made before the RFO, at the time meant as trolling, with an excerpt in the results, but I'll include the bulk of the post now in earnest admiration of his abilities.

As maareek said, Grip winning this and having both the MFO and RFO title would mean we could just create a single event called the Griplympics in which Grip runs targets chosen at random with characters chosen at random and would still show he could do so more efficiently than anybody else could run any other target with any other class. I, for one, would welcome our new Croatian overlord.

One post script, in the way of a little reward for sticking with me so long.

Psychicbian (almost) confirmed.

Cyrax has more Bers, Jahs, and Chams than El runes... what a cheater!
As you may or may not be aware of rals are not qualifiers. So totally not helpful during RFO. ;)

I didn't read anything that i thought i should be offended by, so don't worry. Not to mention you'd have to try harder if you really wanted to.

You were meandering quite a bit indeed. Started clearly with the rals and you went all over the place from there. I do get your point though.

For me the situation is different than yours however. I like crafting (which is why you're picking up rals i presume) too. However i don't have enough of the other resources to do so. All my pgems go into rerolling Baalcharms. So i could save up rals, but i'd have no use for them. At least not until i've rerolled my hundreds of Baalcharms or have gotten tired of doing so. (Note: In MP i do pick them up as i know i can use them for trading and don't have so many Baalcharms to reroll.)

Your point about everyone having different goals besides runes in the RFO is for me only partially applicable.
I did have different goals besides the runes. Mostly sets/uniques to improve perfect (eth) grail. However i know i could very well run 40 hrs without any other goals than getting as much qualifiers as possible. After all i have plenty experience with bulk running a target *cough* Baal *cough* where there's only the occasional lucky find and the best way to play is to turn off your brain. So i acknowledge that i'm most likely one of the very few people who could run without any alternative goal.

If we're gonna say that 99 is over 100, than i declare myself a winner as 120 > 292,6. Close enough, right? :p

@LiquidClear Doesn't everyone? :rolleyes:
Cyrax,

You use Amethysts to roll GCs rather than craft amulets? Damn, that's hardcore.
Actually it's softcore. :D

RFO was fun and I'm proud of myself, because I could manage to do the whole 20 hour set in just four days, sadly didn't have more time. I was the de facto average of he olympics, by scores. What really made me angry was my runeluck, according to Puls and Lems, and the 7,5 hour long dryspell in the most critique times (from 12th hour to 19,5 hour mark). If only those high non-qualifiers could have turned into something higher, meh. Cham wasn't found too, so next RFO, count me in!
Anyways here is a runehaul, to objectify my misluck:
1596713517439.png

Well my view on rolling charms is rather bad because of how incredibly hard it is to roll a good charm at a first place, and secondly what impact does such charm really have on a character. That's why I mostly use gems to craft rather than using them in rolling charms where my chances are much lower to get something useful or good.
That is especially true for amethysts. Using 300 amethysts on rolling charms gives you incredibly small chance to roll something good. On the other hand, using those 300 ammies to craft 300 amulets, you are practically bound to find at least 1 or 2 good useful amulets.
Congrats to the victors! What a boring blowout...

Now my complaints:
I can't see the results on tapatalk, it doesn't allow a spoiler in a spoiler.
After the first 7 hours of running I had as many 5/5 lite facets as qualifiers (1).
I increased my run times by 15% and ran almost 2x as much (and at p3 instead of p1), and just barely beat my last year's score. It would have been worse had I not found my only high rune (sur) in the last 40 minutes of running. I ended up doing 19:20.
My score adjustment for the Bers/Jahs that I couldn't see was denied. I am sure I missed about 240 points worth of runs, putting me around 310 and in first place.
Also, I found an ohm right before this shindig started. It helped me make a greif, but the time between my ohm and the start was only like 30 minute of running. So that puts my personal adjusted score at 320.

My non-complaints:
I had a lot of fun playing, thanks for the motivation! I found 313 pgems, so in Griph's new rune store is like 30 Los.
Good job to the Blizz sorcs! It is still amazing that people are finding new and better ways to play this game after all of these years. The thought and planning that you guys do and what you accomplish is nuts, congrats!
I found a 5/5 lite facet! Only 4 total facets. I picked up 189 other jewels and not one is useful. What a waste of time. Wait, this should be in the complaints section...
I found 12 skillers, so that is cool! 2 pally combats, so that will help my future hammerdin with my new enigma! And 2 Hexing gcs...
17 Hel runes, never have enough of those!
40 Rals! Not sure what these are for, but everyone else picks them up...
I found Sanders Cap, so now I don't have to pick up a Green Cap ever again!
Got to grail -52 (which is grail -50, I don't count separate facets)

So thanks again for the motivation to do some good running.
But how many good amulets do you need vs good charms? If you were a man you would use all your pgems for rolling for jmods. I ID'd about ~40 monarchs or so during the rfo and no suffix 2 socket artisians was all I got.
I assume this is some feature of these "cell phone telephones" I hear about on the news these days (news, re-runs of Futurama, who can tell the difference?) so I'll post the results outside of a spoiler just in case anyone else is encountering the same issue. Obviously anyone who's gotten this far into the thread has already forfeited any thoughts of their own wellfare.

Now then, let me tell you what to do with those Ral runes. You take those 40 Rals, get 40 Perfect Amethysts to go with them, then take 40 of those garbage jewels you got and put them on your highest level character. Assuming that character is at least level 93, you gamble 40 (or more, if some of them are keepable) amulets, then put one of each item in the cube, click combine and await pure magic. (Some simplification is at work here, you'll need 2 rounds to do 40 amulets.)

With luck, you'll get something that looks like this:
Code:
Skull Scarab
Amulet
Required Level: 89
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 94
Fingerprint: 0xaa4551b9
+15 to Strength
+10 to Mana
Regenerate Mana 9%
All Resistances +12
19% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
+2 to Sorceress Skill Levels
10% Faster Cast Rate
Maybe even something better, since that's far from perfect. Granted, most of them will be crap, but that's true with everything in D2.

Of all the items I gave away when I left 5 years ago, that's the one I miss the most, and it's not close. I could get another 15BO beta CtA. I could find more Skillers of Balance. I could find another JMoD. I could find more perfect Griffon's, or even another Tyrael's. I can't find another Skull Scarab. That's what I like most about crafts, it's part that they're stylish, but it's mostly that no other item is your item in the way a craft is.

Anyway, Sander's cap is always a nice find, as are 5/5 facets, but I would like to address your concerns over your score adjustments being overlooked. You see, your case was very compelling and you argued it eloquently ... but Grip's check cleared. Surely you understand. ;p
Don't know what Franky is complaining about. He could've read the scores in the news paper like everyone else. And i too have heard of these phoney things. Not sure what to make of it though.
Many. 1 amulet for goldfind sorc, 1 for trav sorc, 1 for pvp sorc, 1 for pitbarb, 1 for pitsinger, 1 for pvp melee assassins, 1 for pvp trappers, 1 for... Many.

Also lol jmod. Even if you give me one, I would probably just give it to someone else lol.
Wow, very impressive results. The total runes found just blows my mind. Good to see so much activity compared to last year.
And none of those chars uses even 1 charm?
Obviously charms are both good and important, and I love rolling me some GCs, but pretending like they're even close to as important as good crafted amulets is just silliness.
I have to agree with fabnus. Charms can improve your character but good craft can make/break character.
If it means that much to you guys i'll consider saving my pamethysts to craft some miracle amulet.
Don't listen to them, they are biased because they have too much luck when crafting and miracle amulets happen to them every time they craft. Even Nulio is jelly of such luck skillz.

But to answer your question on more serious tone, yes, I do use skillers on my chars and yes, they usually do have some life mod. If I used plain skillers instead, my chars would be 0.1% weaker, aka losing some life which I put into energy too many times anyway cause I have much more life than I need. Beta cta too stronk, agreed.
