[2007] The Afterlife Tournament [by Wolron]

Light_Wight is starting to feel pretty confident about her tasks at hand: yesterday I took her to Mephisto and killed him, who finally dropped Berserker's splint mail on the fifth run-through. I took screenshots of much of this but I'll have to post at the end because this is a different computer. I'd have to say that Mephisto has been the hardest monster to kill so far.

She continued through hell act IV, pretty much running from everything. Once she runs past the 20 yard CoS radius, everything else can see but the timer doesn't expire, so most things end up chasing her and the SW and merc most of the time. Sometimes when they're getting beat upon, I'll cast a teleport and make a stand. Such was the case against Izual, whom I found amongst about 30 other monsters, none of them incredibly dangerous. I haven't seen a gloam in ages, which is SWEET. Izual died pretty fast, and then fortunately the stairs into the River of Flame were right inside the gate of the city of the damned so I didn't kill anything there.

I barely killed anything in the River of Flame, though I did get caught in hit recovery once and had to use 4 of my 7 full rejuv potions before I could get away. Danged Urdars! I finally decided to stop running and kill some things, garnering some breathing room. This is definitely a fun way to play. Fortunately Kool went ahead of me so I have something to beat. I teleported past everything in the corridor portion of the RoF (oh yeah, I got a Lum at HF I think - it is now in a wire fleece for my merc) and proceeded to painfully clear the Chaos Sanctuary. My merc died a dozen times at least, which was a lot of money. I finally got it cleared out and Diablo went down with zero problems. I got the king of all finds when he died - Stormshield! On the first drop! With about 45% MF (about there anyway). With Fade activated I am now up to max 50% DR and max resists! I even have fire absorb 15% from Dwarf Star!

There was only one problem- those who are following the thread may remember that I stopped pumping strength a while ago. Well when I killed Diablo I had plenty of points, so I put 5 into strength and 5 into vitality, which left me 14 short of the needed 156 (I have 17 on an amulet which helped a lot). So after traveling to Harrogath I opened up atma and found +17 strength on 3 GCs (one is an Amazon skiller). So I donned those and put on the Stormshield, which gives +30 of its own, and took the GCs back off. Voila! My 2 ELD-ed ethereal bone shield is now replaced with something far better. I was wondering before the Monarch dropped if I could get guardian with an ethereal 2os bone shield I found in normal, but no longer. This thing rocks!

Light_Wight went to Act V, pretty much bypassing everything possible. It was possible to run from most everything except to kill Nihlathak since there were flayers in all the levels I ended up killing everything to be sure. It pushed my level into the low 79 range. I even ran from bosses and champions. In this mess Light_Wight shopped a +2 assassin skills claw, which she personalized, and she socketed her twitchthroe, but hasn't put anything in it yet.

She found the ancient's way WP but ran out of money repairing the circlet with resurrecting the merc, so she took a break to generate some more cash by selling her items that are not really usable but kept in ATMA so far. She rerolled the ancients five or six times but could only kill one a single time before running low on funds. I'll try later today to finish the ancients and get my first guardian! I might be able to do it at level 80 if I am lucky!

Keep up the good work! Two guardians in this tournament would be awesome! If you are still at 79 for the ancients, you may take over first place as well. Good Luck with Baal.

Thanks Wolron! Great tournament idea. I am very pleased with the style of play. Not sure I would have made it this far without that teleport on the helm, though I also have a teleport amulet, so maybe.

I'd be hard-pressed to defeat the ancients without that stormshield. I tried really hard to beat them last evening but got down to Madawc, who was lightning immune. I equipped the ripsaw and got him to bleed three times, but his throwing knives were crushing my health, even with fade and the SS. He was spectral hit and I ran out of healing potions and he was about 85% life so I decided to try again another time. So, no progress beyond that. Right now I am at about 20% of the way to level 80, so I think it'll be close in my effort to get the guardian title without passing Kool. I'll bypass everything in the Worldstone Keep unless there are gloams and then I'll clear the levels they're on. I think it'll really depend on if Baal drops a S/U on the first try, otherwise those minion waves will really add up.

Saint_Xylo has killed Diablo on the second attempt and received his reward. The reward was actually decent for a change. Milabrega's Rod has +1 to paladin skills and is a bette club than the Unique DeathSpade Axe that was rewarded in Act 2. But that is two weapons and two helms rewarded so far. It does not help to fill all those empty spots (gloves/belt/boots/shield). Maybe Anya will give me a good shield and then I can personalize a belt or a good pair of gloves or belt. Yes, I think Act 5 should see a major improvement in his equipment. Of course, he does have to live through it first.

Light_Wight finally defeated Baal and claimed her prize as first place so-far in the afterlife tournament. It was a very good challenge, but I get ahead of myself...

Last we heard from Light_Wight, she was stuck on the ancients. Yesterday I rolled them a few more times and with the help of the teleport helm, she split them so they could be fought one at a time. Korlic was first, who was cursed and magic resistant, but by feeding the merc rejuv potions and burning him with LS, we prevailed. Big step, keeping him alive! My next job was to isolate Talic, which was easier because Madawc was extra fast and followed us farther into a corner before I quickly teleported a few screens away. He had an aura but it wasn't dangerous (I don't even know what it was) and went down with a couple more rejuv potions to the merc. That left it to LI Madawc... With a merc I was good to go, spamming Mind Blast enough to keep him in hit recovery, quaffing potions when I needed them (it drains fast even when you have Insight on the moron) and waiting on the merc to finish the job. Madawc kept targeting my Shadow, which was nice. I cast it right on him and that seemed to work well.

I'd tried everything: I used my socket award on my Twitchthroe and put a diamond in there for extra AR, got some good AR rings out, all my AR charms, and tried to whack him with the Ripsaw to bleed him to death, but it never worked and I tried twice before I gave up and decided that the merc survival was key to my success.

I was just about level 80 by the time I killed them, and WSK spawned burning souls and OKs and all kinds of nasty critters. Fortunately, the stairs to WSK 3 were a single teleport from the WP in WSK 2, and the stairs to Throne were a single teleport from WSK 3 stairs. I love that helm! No Sweat.

I only killed the monsters in the main hallways in the throne room, enough to park lister (not because I was scared, but he comes with tons of experience, and I needed to finish in 80 levels). None of the minions were hard, even a little. CoS and MB really is great crowd control.

I was starting to creep up the experience bar on level 80, so when I killed Baal the first time I was really hoping for a S/U. Nope. 5 rares and a blue. I'd forgotten to put on my 30% MF amulet, so I was killing with about 30% total. ARGH! At least I killed him. Notice the XP counter.

So thinking that I'd be way over, I tried it all again, killing nothing in the WSK and little in the Throne, killing all minions but parking Lister and a few of his buddies again. This time I didn't forget the amulet before he went down, and ironically he dropped the gold Tulwar. Who'd have thunk it? I actually ate at a Mediterranean restaurant last night named Ali Baba's.

Cows provides almost no experience at P1, so I finished it up and keep under the wire to go ahead of Kool. I guess it is like golfing, he who has honors has to hit unawares of how the hole will play. My final stats look like this in game.

My equipment is at the bottom of the post. Key to my success was Hell Diablo, who dropped that Stormshield, and the helm from hell! I love that thing for this character. The Twitchthroe kept my blocking WAY up, even with that 2-eld bone shield I wore for a long time.

Nice work OS!! That means that there are only five other character types that need to be worked on!!

I do agree with Mursilis though; nobody is going to top you. Not that it is not possible, but it is certainly very unlikely. I will continue working on my Paladin until there is no more interest, but I really do not think that a Paladin has much of a chance.

Saint_Xylo has defeated Baal and moved on to NM difficulty. It was a brute force battle much like all other battles that the Saint has been involved in. He is using Milabrega's Rod and Sacrifice along with Holy Shock (about 1-1000 damage). He keeps his belt full of red potions and scarfs them down regularlly. He does have a couple life steal rings, but he usually wore resistance rings in Normal Difficulty.

Equipment has really improved as a result of Act 5. The ethereal Ghoul Casque Cap was socketed and a Ral rune gave it another +30 fire resist; the targe with 3 sockets and +6 to resist all was personalized and then turned into an Ancient's Pledge; he gambled for saintly boots, saintly light gauntlets, and faithful plate belt; the Wizendraw unique long battle bow was his reward from Baal (first try) and is in the off-hand. I decided to throw another character in: Meet [highlight]Angelic_Elektra[/highlight], an Angel who descended to earth in order to defeat Baal. She already beat Andariel and is now about to find Tal-Rasha's Tomb.

Furthermore I have to 10% FCR jewelries, giving me a casting animation of 17 frames for CL/Lightning :jig:

From now on I'll try to keep the level down, since I already discovered, that the only way of winning this tournament is by staying below level 80

She vanquished Duriel (13 times) and was rewarded with a Sander's Superstition. Could have been worse, I guess. Especially since Mephisto rewarded her on the first run with Sander's Riprap...ok, I know - +50 partial set bonus isn't going to rock, but ... well, it's cool to have to items of the same set:grin:

Saint_Xylo has defeated Andariel on P7 and moved on to Lut Gholein. It was a good thing that he did it on P7 because he forgot to switch to his magic find rings/amulet. The P7 came through with a reward of the Hell PLague uniqe long sword. The battle was done with "Fist of HEavens". The Saint would do laps around that blood filled hole in the center of the middle room of Anariel's level and take about three shots per lap with the FofH. It took a little while, but with a useless merc, it was the best way to do the deed.

The major equipment improvement in NM Act 1 was the Charsi embue of a pair of ethereal sharkskin boots. See below.

Angelic_Elektra defeated Diablo, Baal and a few zillion cows and moved on to Nightmare. From Diablo I got a Hawkmail, from Baal Duskdeep, which I am now proudly wearing. I personalised an "Ancient Pledge" Gothic Shield, and the only item slots now still missing are the Gloves. The Anya quest got me a nice Orb, and I thought about personalising that one, but decided that I need the resists more than the +1 to all skills...

Saint_Xylo has killed Radament and moved to the waypoint in the Dry Hills after delving into the Halls of the dead and finding the waypoint there. He has difficulties against lightning immuned, but uses the Wizendraw bow with its magic arrows to kill them off via a seemingly endless battle. Other opposition is handled with fist of heavens, but nothing is really easy for the Saint.

There have been no equipment improvements, but he has decided to use the Heal Plague long sword instead of Milabregas rod. It seems to be a slight improvement.

His current skills are:
Resist Lightning: +2
Holy Shock: +15 (plus the prerequisites)
Holy Bolt: +15 (plus the prerequisites)
Fist of Heavens: +17 (plus the prerequisites)

That means that he only needs 13 more skill points to max out Fist of Heavens. That will probably happen mid way through act 5 if he lives that long. He is playing on P7 at this point, so living that long is not a given!

Mi-T-Bone chugged along through Normal, and is now a Destroyer.

I realize I forgot to post any of his progress, but there wasn’t much worth noting. At this point he still pwns. Any close calls were mostly from hubris, when he pushed too fast and got caught into the fray. Before his resists were up, the vampires’ fire and lightning (+ conviction) from Bremm Sparkfist in Act 3 gave us some concern. In Act 5, he tripped an evil urn in The Ancients' Way which spawned a Moon Lord boss pack surrounding him. That took some terror blasts and rejuvs to escape, but escape he did.

We did Normal at /p8. When we took on Lister, Mi-T-Bone gained a whole level! But then we forgot and accidentally spawned Baal on /p8 as well. That also took a while, but in the end we got him.

Equipment finds: after two Meph runs we got Angelic Mantle and Hsarus’ iron heel. Mi-T-Bone kept the boots. Diablo took four runs before dropping Venom Ward. Thresh Socket dropped a Sol rune, which Mi-T-Bone used to make himself a ‘Lore’ bone helm. Baal dropped a unique on the first try… String of Ears! Oh my Zod! :shocked: That is end game worthy, or at least way better than the ethereal Heavy Belt he was wearing until then!

This should be a post about the end on NM Act 2. However, Saint_Xylo has beaten Duriel twice so far and not received his reward. I fear that the reward he receives may not be what he is after.

The first attempt was at P7. After all, he played all of act 2 at P7, why not try Duriel there. The answer to that question should have been: because it will cost you about 1,000,000 gold pieces to resurrect your merc 40 times! Finally, after the bug died, there were about 5 yellow items and one blue item in the loot. Yuck!

The second attempt was at P1. Maybe a miracle would occur. The good news was that the merc only died once. The bad news was that there weren't even any yellow items this time. Maybe the next attempt will be at P3.

There have been no equipment improvements.

Duriel at /p7? Yeesh! He’s a tough one to run anyway, since the entrance area has a lot of “dead†zones where items won’t drop. Luring him into the bigger open chamber is supposed to help reduce the number of nodrops.

Mi-T-Bone has finished Act 1 NM, without much of note. It only took two Andy runs to snag a unique, thanks to her drop bug. Unfortunately it was the Iron Jang Bong. Blech! That went to Akara for cash.

We had slightly better results crafting a bone wand: +2 to necro skills, 10% FCR, and the usual caster mods. Sweet! Too bad MTB will have to wait until level 61 to wield it. In the meantime he purchased a +2 skills bone wand from Akara.

Now we’ve entered Act 2, where our first act was to hire Mizan the Act 2 HF merc. I can’t wait for those Duriel runs!

Thought I'd give some update on Angelic_Elektra. It's about time
Act I in NM was a piece of cake. Lightning and CL cut down the monster in no time, esp. since I was only playing at p3. Avoiding levelling - I think by now everyone knows why ;-)

Andariel didn't drop anythin useful - I had the choice between The Impaler, Hexfire and Sander's gloves. Well, at least the last ones go well with my Sander's Superstition and Riprap. Now I even get a whopping +75 AR partial set bonus :badteeth: And I know that Duriel is going to drop a Sander's Paragon on my first run...errr...*checking probabilities...* 1:19270 on first kill without MF! Yey, that's got to be it! :-D

Anyways, need some more Mana right now, CL drains Mana much too fast. But it's ok - I can buy potions. All those vendors need to earn their living somehow.
