Packrat Killed Duriel and moves on

Packrat has killed Duriel. Blessed Hammer did it on P8 with a last second loss of the mercenary and no trips to town. My Act 2 souvenir was another interesting dilemma. I had Isenhart's case and Parry. I also had a Rondache with three sockets and +6 to all resist. The Rondache could have been used to store perfect diamonds as packrat developed them, but in the end he decided to switch to an Act 3 merc and go for all of Isenhart's set for that merc. The Parry would have been nice to keep, but it was not allowed because the Act 2 merc could not carry it into Act 3. Therefore, the Isenhart's case is my Act 2 souvenir!

ScavengingSkunk has defeated Diablo. It was actually quite an easy time… having a ranged attack merc and a summonable ally is a big help in the Chaos Sanctuary. Diablo himself dropped nothing of interest (typical pile of rares), but a unique boss on the way up dropped this, which has become my act 4 souvenir:

You cannot unsocket a souvenir and then socket it again. You also cannot reroll a souvenir with the cube recipe. What you can do is reroll an item that is not a souvenir yet and then make it a souvenir if you like it enough. I guess you could also unsocket an item that is not a souvenir if you want to change it. That seems a little extreme though. You can also make a socketed item a souvenir and not fill it with sockets until later when you find the right socket fillers.

In other words, you cannot back out the attributes of a souvenir item, but you can develop it further if you like.

I was beginning to think I wouldn't have anything much as a choice of Souvenir for act 1. Then 3 uniques dropped 2 in catacombs level 3 and 1 from Andy. The other 2 were not useful but the ring certainly is so that the choice.

I was going TP tomeless from the start to save a little gold since as we all know TP tomes drop in the jail right - wrong. I got none from there and finally had to shell out and buy one.

Its amazing when you don't sell items how little gold you actually get from drops. I have never before bothered to keep any +GF items but this time I grabbed them all.

Andy wasn't that hard with 3 in bone spear and a bone wall keeping her off merc and me. Never played a bone necro before its interesting learning how to use the wall.

Perhaps her fear lent heat to her flames, for they seemed to come faster and hotter than ever before. Andariel died in seconds.

But I was in trouble. Despite cramming all the MF I could find onto both Nim & Shikha throughout the act, they found not a single set item and but one unique: the Umbral Disk small shield. Indeed, their overall haul of items was perhaps the worst I've ever seen at this point in the game. My best other item was probably a +10FCR / +10% poison resist ammy.

Time to cash in the imbue. I went with gloves, and the result was OK: +16% fire resist / +46% extra gold / autorepair / something useless. Dissatisfied, I tried gambling a few pairs of gloves, but succeeded only in depleting my cash, the best result being +13% MF.

In the end, it was a difficult call between the imbued gloves and the unique shield, but I went with the Umbral Disk. As Nim's one and only unique of the act it makes an appropriate souvenir. It's mods of interest to a Sorc are +30% block, +10 dex, and +20 life. Unlike the gloves, it can also be socketed later with a perfect diamond, and has the further attraction of taking up only one of two possible shield slots.

Packrat hammered Mephisto at P8 with no real trouble (5 full rejuvs were used). Then came the decision. Packrat loved that Heraldric shield, but would it serve well in Hell? Sanders gloves or boots were pretty, but a poor choice. The merc had a sword that was lousy, but it was never used anyway. Finally, that Heraldric Shield won the day; maybe an offhand shield in hell.

The thrill of seeing famed Lut Gholein for the first time was swiftly dispelled by the unrelenting heat. Likewise, being introduced to the charming Lord Jerhyn was soon followed by an encounter with the insufferably patronising Drognan.


Teaming up with the doughty warrior Pratham has more than offset the loss of Nim's equipment. Enfolded in his defensive aura, he draws their foes into clumps where they are easily incinerated. Nim's discomfort with the climate has prompted her to begin dabbling in cold magic, a natural correlate to her intrinsic aptitude for fire. Her freezing spikes have already proven themselves against the Horadric Mummies and their undying hordes.

Notable, though unuseable finds were the Deathspade unique axe and Hsarus' Iron Stay buckler.

ScavengingSkunk has defeated Baal and the Cow King, and moved on to Nightmare difficulty. No good drops from either boss, but I did craft the following armor for my merc, which will be my act 5 souvenir:

If I keep the act 3 merc, then the +2 life per kill will be handy, but not spectacular… but if I trade him in for an act 2 HF merc in NM, then the leech and life per kill will be great.

Picking a souvenir is not getting any easier. This time it will be the Superior Ethereal Great Helm that I found for my merc. Defense is 52 and it has one socket. Sigh.

It is now impossible to leave a post on Thread 2. It appears that one page is all that we can get with the current bug. This time let's try not using a table. Here is the format of a typical post:

I think Meph wanted me to hurry up, he dropped me 2 pairs of Green Boots, Sander's and Hsarus'. Although Sanders are faster, I've taken Hsarus' for the 25%FR given that I speed up a bit as a Barb anyway.

I was actually spoilt for choice this time, as I actually passed up on Manald Heal, Cathan's Visage, Vidala's Ammy and, errm, yeah, Sander's Boots.

Packrat has completed Normal Difficulty

Packrat finished off Baal at P8 without going back to town and without losing his Act 3 Merc. Of course, he did use about 15 full rejuvs. He needed the stash space anyway. THe cows came next and he found the Cow King's Studded Leather! I never saw that before.

Duckdeep is my Act 5 Souvenir. Unlike previous acts, this one had several viable choices. In the end, it was either Duskdeep or a rare field plate armor. The armor was OK, it had +85 defense and a few minor attributes.

It should be great fun starting NM without much equipment. Whee!

Act IV was nothing but traumatic for Seeker. Not only did he not find anything remotely worth taking as a trophy, but it cost him an awful lot of his precious gold.

Diablo fell in due course, simple thanks to 75FR/73LR and 60% blocking. He dropped a bunch of rares that were all thoroughly checked as last resorts, but were all found wanting.

In the end, it came down to a choice between a Field Plate with 2 sockets for Washeed or a +1 masteries, 16%MF ammy for himself. For better or worse he's holding out for a better option to wear around his neck, so it's the crappy armour for the Merc. For once I was REALLY cursing how short Act IV is, it's tough in this tourney unless you get very lucky.

A short update, as life has been getting in the way.

SirScrounge the Summoner embarked into the Maggot Lair with nothing more than his merc. Procedure was to run forward until contact with the enemy way made, then quickly retreat behind the merc and fire pilums over his head to help. It actually worked quite well. Got down to the treasure room, where I then summoned some skellies to assist in there, the rest was easy. After that, he proceeded to the Lost City, which felt rather homey with the darkness and all of the undead. Despite the good feelings, he and his minions showed no mercy, clearing the Ancient Tunnels and the Claw Viper Temple with no issues. He's now poised to enter the palace and see what's going on down there.

Drops have been non-existent, runes included, so unless he gets really lucky from this point, it's going to be bittersweet to say the least to choose a souvenir. We'll see how it goes.

Packrat has changed from P8 to P4 to play NM. Sometimes it seems that it is too easy at P4, other times Packrat nearly Packs it in. Especially when a group of champion bowyers attack at range. Well, it appears that a souvenir is found for Act 1 of NM. It is Isenhart's Parry. That matches up well with Isenhart's case that is already in the trophy case. Since the merc will use both, the fact that they are not usually too good in higher difficulty levels should not bother me much. I have about 600,000 gold saved up, so if I get to Lut Gholein, I will be tempted to buy a really powerful scepter with a few good skill enhancements.

Packrat's Blessed Hammer is already generating over 1600 damage, so I am starting to develop a second kill capability for when I start meeting up with magic immune monsters. I will be looking for a really good one handed melee weapon that I can use with vengence.

Packrat killed Andariel on P4 without going back to town. Of course, the merc died and cost packrat another 20K gold. Gold reserves are still high though (about 600K).

My mentor (skunkbelly) has advised me not to waste time with "vengence". I guess most monsters are not immune to magic damage, so that should not be a problem. Hmmm. He suggests a weapon with crushing blow. I will be on the lookout for one of those, but then I would have to souvenir it. We shall see.

By the way, I have been having a lot bette luck with the database posts. Now I can view all of the original thread and the 2nd thread. I suggest that we continue with this thread and I will keep an eye on the other two just to be sure that noone continues to use it. Question: Should I reconstruct a table? I am reminded of the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don'e change it!"
