Gypsy Scoundrel Tournament

The Gypsy Scoundrel Tournament

Some adventurers are born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Those that are so blessed have a relatively easy time of it. That is not your fate. The fact of your birth was hardly noticed and never officially recorded. Your mother was a typical gypsy of less than noble character. Your father? Well, I guess you must have had one, but your mother never mentioned him. You asked her once, but her silence and the wrathful look in her eye were enough to warn you never to mention it again. Being alone in life, she was deeply mired in poverty. She knew the ways of the realm's lower places and, through a mixture of guile and thievery, she scraped out a meager existence for herself and for you. Her hands were the hands of a thief and her mind was dedicated to survival by whatever means became available. She taught you everything she knew.

She left you alone to fend for yourself in a world that your mind twisted to fit into your unique view of it. The only things that she left you were her book of crafting and cubing, her rainbow amulet and two beautiful rings of elemental resistance. You still have the book, but the amulet and rings were stolen. The thief had pretended to be a friend, but the tankard of ale that he bought for you contained more than ale. The poison almost killed you and while you were unconscious he took the jewelry and ran off. He left the book because he had no idea of its value. Nothing else that you were carrying was of any use to him.

You are a gypsy with no home to call your own. You are a scoundrel in the eyes of others, but that is because they don't understand the difficulty that comes from surviving without the benefit of family, faith or inborn fortune. You have no benefactor, you have no mentor, and you have no patron to pamper you with gifts of charity. You despise those that have such benefits and you avoid even the appearance of such elements of human degeneracy. Such things are for those who cannot, or will not, look after themselves. They wear the battle clothes of gentlemen and wield the weapons of the spoiled upper class knights who are interested in flaunting their wealth instead of using cunning and a no-holds-barred attitude when battling the enemy. You would not dirty your hands with such sissified implements.

However, you do have one interesting weakness. It must be your gypsy background that gives you a taste for the flamboyant battle apparel of the past and the truly unique implements that can be found in the more remote corners of the realm. Simple magic items are for the pampered. The rare battle gear of the snobbish upper class is beneath you. Your dreams contain visions of much more than that. As you roam the lands in your crude, low quality gear, you long for the day when you will dazzle the world with Civerb's Vestments or with Iratha's Finery or ... As you hack away at monsters and men of evil with your worn and cracked axe, you dream of the chance to wield a Ribcracker staff or a Bloodletter sword or... As others sneer at you and ridicule you for your tattered appearance, you read and reread the book of crafting and cubing that your mother left you. With that gypsy magic, you know you can create items the likes of which even the fabled Cow King never imagined.

Yes, that is your dream and that is your destiny. One day, those that currently despise you will envy you. Those that will not allow you in their stores will marvel at your wardrobe and your armory. In the meantime, you will have to survive on the legacy left to you by the mother that abandoned you.

Rules of the tournament:
GENERAL:
Your character must be generated as "Hardcore". When your character dies, that character is done. If you do die, you may enter the tournament again, but you must select a different character type every time you enter and you cannot use items found by the previous character. Multiplayer is not allowed. Other than Act 4, you can replay areas as many times as you want. This can either be to simply get more experience and level up, or it can be to frequent areas that are known to provide set and unique items more often.

You are expected to report your progress after each Act, but it is not an absolute requirement. However, you must report when you finish normal, nightmare or hell difficulty. When your character dies, you must report his death and then turn in all of your player's equipment for use as the tournament prize. This is done by emailing me your dead character's save file at (w*@*.net).

A player can declare a character finished. This means that the character cannot be used further, but there is no danger of losing 50 points due to death (see scoring description given below). When a player is declared finished, the file is emailed in and another character can be started out. No player can replay the same character class. Thus, there is a limit of seven tries (if anyone has the stomach for it!). Only one character can be played at a time. That means that your current character must either die or be declared finished before you can start another character.

To enter the tournament reply to this thread and remove all the information except the table. To leave the table in your reply, erase everthing except "the word code in brackets, the information that is the table, and word /code in brackets. The first time you do this, enter your forum name, your character name, your character class, your location as "Normal-Act 1", your level as 1 and your score as 1. When you report your progress, just reply to the most recent entry that contains a table. Then add your current location, level and score on the line that you originally created when you signed up. Ideally you should try to keep the table ordered by the highest score on top, but I will occasionally correct anything that is out of order. The tournament will begin on November 1st and will end February 7th (or sooner if it is obvious that there is no more interest). The winner will be determined by the scoring method given below.

EQUIPMENT:
The only items that you can use are the following:
(1) The meager items that you have at the beginning of the game.
(2) Any item whose description begins with the words "cracked", "crude" or "low quality".
(3) Set items (Green)
(4) Unique items (Gold)
(5) Crafted items (Orange)
(6) Rune Word items (Gold)
(7) Tomes of Identify and Town Portal that you find. You may have to carry loose scrolls for a while unless you find tomes in your travels!
(8) Charms of any size and purpose.
(9) Keys.
(10) Potions that you find or buy from the gambling store in towns.
(11) If you find a rainbow amulet (+ to all resistances), you can use it. It is certain to be the amulet that the thief stole from you! {you are allowed to find and use the best rainbow amulet that you can find} The only other amulets that you can use are unique or set items.
(12) If you find a ring that provides resistance enhancement, it must be a ring that the thief stole from you. {The ring can have only one capability and that must be to a single elemental resistance. You can use the best two rings of this type that you can find. You may store several of these to be used as needed.} The only other rings that you can use are unique or set items.

Note that other items may be useful for cubing crafted items or socketing rune words. These items can be saved for later use, but they cannot be worn until they become gold or orange items. Any socket fillers can be saved for such purposes, but they cannot simply be socketed in the normal way because they do not change the item into a gold or orange item. Therefore, placing three perfect diamonds into a three-socketed shield is not an allowed use of the sockets! They must be used for applying a rune word. There is one exception to this rule; if you ask Larzuk to add sockets to a crafted, unique or set item, those sockets can be used in any way that you want.

In short, you cannot wear gray, blue (magic) or yellow (rare) items. The only white items that you can wear are those that are crude, cracked or low quality. Blue or Gray (socketed) items can be used to "build" an orange/gold item, but you cannot wear them until their color is changed!

STORES
Due to your reputation, in acts 1, 2, 3 and 5, you can only enter stores that are run by the underworld of the realm (you can tell that it is run by the underworld because gambling is allowed!) (Necromancers and Amazons have further shopping restrictions that are mentioned below in the character descriptions). This is seldom a problem, because you would not lower your lofty dreams to dirty yourself with the apparel and weaponry that they sell. It will be important to visit the local gambling house to determine what is available to you because that is the only establishment that will deal with the likes of a gypsy scoundrel. The following provides a detailed list of stores and people that will accommodate you.
NOTE: With the exception of Act 4, you will never be able to repair your armor or weapons. It is possible to use your Horadric Cube to repair items when you have the right runes, but you will probably be forced to collect backup items to replace items that wear out.

Act 1 - Gheed's store is available to you, but remember, you would never wear the items or wield the weapons that he sells. Nonetheless, he will buy items that you find, and occasionally it may be possible to buy or gamble for the precious set or unique items that you seek.

Akara and Charsi are only available to complete the quests. You cannot buy items from them or sell items to them. Kashya will supply you with a free mercenary or you may hire another one if you like. The ring that Akara gives you is not usable! The items that Charsi would imbue for you are not usable. Sell them for gambling stakes. Visiting Akara to get healed is allowed, but you cannot buy anything from her or sell anything to her (this is true for the healer type in each act, healing charity is extended even to scoundrels).

Act 2 - Elzix's store is available to you. He will buy items that you find, and occasionally it may be possible to buy or gamble for the precious set or unique items that you seek.

Drognan is only available to complete the quests. Lysander does not trust you and will not allow you in his store. You can visit Fara to get healed, but her charity does not extend to allowing you to buy or sell in her shop. Greiz will supply you with mercenaries.

Act 3 - Alkor's store is available to you. Hewill buy items that you find, and occasionally it may be possible to buy or gamble for the precious set or unique items that you seek. You can also purchase a couple types of potions that you will seldom need.

Hratli and Ormus are only available to complete the quests. You can visit Ormus only to get healed. Asheara will supply you with mercenaries, for a price. You can also sell items to Asheara, but the only items that you can buy from her are set items or uniques and they are seldom (if ever) available there. The ring that Ormus gives you cannot be worn, but it can be sold.

Act 4 - The scoundrel is only allowed to enter the Pandamonium Fortress for the purpose of killing Diablo. He is accompanied there by Tyrael and, due to Tyreal's presence, both shops are available to him. It is nice to be able to buy potions and tomes and repair those worn out set and unique items that have been gathering dust in his stash. Once Diablo has been disposed of, the scoundrel may never return to the Pandamonium Fortress except to use the red portal that Tyrael provides to take him to Harrogath. This is your only opportunity to buy healing and mana potions, and to have items repaired. NOTE: This is also the only ACT that you are forbidden to return to, so you cannot simply use the way points to come back and use the stores!!!

Act 5 - Nihilthak's store is available to you. He will buy items that you find, and occasionally it may be possible to buy or gamble for the precious set or unique items that you seek. Of course at some point, Anya will take over his store and Anya's store is also available to you. NOTE: There will be a period during the Anya quest when you have no store available to you! Nihilthak is gone and Anya is not available!

Larzuk will not deal with you except to socket an item for you when you kill Shenk the Overseer. Malah will heal you if you enter her shop. Qual Kehk will supply you with mercenaries. The item that Anya gives you cannot be used, but it can be sold for gold. The runes that Qual Kehk awards you with are yours to do with as you wish.

ATMA STASH:
You can use Atma in two ways:

First, as a receptacle for grail items or any other private collections that you might have. These items cannot be retrieved by this character for later use.

Second, a small Atma stash of a maximum of 16 items can be used. This allows you to save socketed normal items, set items and unique items that you want to save for future use. It is a good place to save backups for when your items wear out.

Otherwise, the tournament is played just as the game is intended. No twinking is allowed.

CHARACTER TYPE and SKILLS:
You can play any character type, but there are a few limits on the skills that a gypsy scoundrel can acquire and on the amount of training that can be attained in a given skill.

First of all, the level of a scoundrel's training is limited due to the lack of powerful mentors. Since the scoundrel must learn things the hard way, the more powerful skills remain somewhat underdeveloped.

Level 1, 6, and 12 skills can be assigned the full complement of 20 points.

Level 18 skills can only be assigned 15 points. This does not include skill enhancements given by items. Level 24 skills can only be assigned 10 points. Level 30 skills can only be assigned 5 points.

Secondly, some character types have additional limits on skills or other abilities:

ASSASSIN - no skill limitations except the point limits as noted above.

NECROMANCER - no skill limitations except the point limits as noted above. However, he is the king of scoundrels and is so despised by humanity that he cannot enter any store (even those run by the underworld!). One exception to this is that when a quest requires the cooperation (or reward) of a shop owner, the necromancer can enter the shop for that purpose only. The other exception is Act 4. Tyrael's presence intimidates the shop owners there and even the necromancer is accepted as a customer.

DRUID - Most of the creatures that he can summon have no qualms with accompanying a scoundrel master, but there is one exception. The Grizzly Bear has too much pride and will simply not respond to the druid's call (no points can be assigned to the "Summon Grizzly" skill).

AMAZON - Unlike most level 24 skills, the decoy skill can be developed to the full complement of 20 assigned skill points. However, the Valkyrie (similar to the druid's Grizzly) will not respond to the Amazon's call (no points can be assigned to the "Valkyrie" skill). The Amazon is also a victim of the "Green Eyed Monster (Jealousy)". No female shop owner will deal with the Amazon due to their jealousy of her looks and her formidable power. For the most part, this is not a problem. But, in addition to the limitations already put on shop usage, the Amazon cannot hire mercenaries from Kashya or Asheara. In addition, Asheara and Anya will not deal with her (NOTE: Jamella in Act 4 has no choice in the matter because Tyrael overrides her jealousy).

PALADIN - has some limits due to his lack of faith. A maximum of one point can be assigned each the skills of prayer, cleansing, meditation and sacrifice. Salvation and redemption cannot be assigned any points. If an item gives skill points to any of these, use them, but you cannot assign additional points of your own.

BARBARIAN - has some limits due to his lack of esteem (charisma) with his fellow man. He can only assign one point to Battle Orders and he cannot assign any points to the Battle Command skill.

SORCERESS - has one limit and one weakness. The limit is that only one point may be assigned to the level one skill of "Warmth". The scoundrel sorceress is nearly devoid of warmth! The weakness is that she is obsessed with the Telekinesis and Teleport skills. Her inclination to thievery and the manipulation of items at a distance makes these skills impossible for her to ignore. Once they are available to her, she must place at least one-third of her skill points in them!! Since Telekinesis is a level 6 skill, she must use her level six point in Telekinesis and then continue to develop it by applying every third skill point to it (9th, 12th, 15th). At level 18, she must choose to use the 18th point in either Telekinesis or Teleport. This choice continues for every third level thereafter. It is legal to develop these skills quicker if the sorceress desires, but these rules require at least every third point to be use in this way. Just like the other level 18 skills, Teleport is limited and may only be assigned 15 points. NOTE: skill points received as rewards for completing quests are not restricted in this way. They may be used on any skill that is still underdeveloped (except warmth).

Additional rules added before the start of the tournament (posts #15 and #20 in the original thread):

The Necromancer has the following restrictions: The Skeleton Mastery is limited to ten assigned points. The Golem Master is limited to five assigned points. The only other restrictions are those given in the original posted instructions.

The Sorceress has the following change in restrictions: The Telekinesis and Teleport skills require one-third of your skill points starting with level 6. However, this is limited to five assigned skill point in each of them. Of course, you can assign more if you like. The warmth skill is still limited to a maximum of one assigned skill point.

Mercenary
You certainly can hire a mercenary. You do not force your own values on the mercenary. He/she can wear any armor and use any weapon subject to their usual restrictions. After all, good help is hard to find.

Also, you receive no scoring points for unique or set items that they equip.

SCORING

Plus 1 point for each way point that you activate (even the Rogue's camp). If you do not want to activate a way point, that is fine, you just don't get the point.

Plus 1 point for every quest that you finish. You must finish all quests in an act before going on to the next act. This includes even Charsi's imbuing quest that is useless to you.

Minus 1 point for each level of your character.

You get points for set items that you are currently wearing. If you find set items but do not have them on, you get nothing for them. The first item of each set is worth 5 points. The second item of the same set is worth 10 points, the third is worth 15 points, the fourth 20 points, the fifth is worth 25 points and the sixth is worth 30 points. In addition, if you have the full set you get a 50 point bonus.

You get points for unique items that you are currently wearing. If you find unique items but do not have them on, you get nothing for them. Normal unique items are worth five points. Exceptional unique items are worth 15 points. Elite unique items are worth 30 points. If all your items are unique, you receive a bonus of 50 points.

If your character dies, you lose 50 points. A dead character may be the winner, but this penalty makes that somewhat unlikely to occur.

On February 7th all character files that have not been previously emailed to me must be sent in and the winner will be declared based on their point total.

The winner receives all the contents of the other player files.

Just want to point out that people might have a problem with that. Normally when your character dies in HC your items are lost. Looting trough ATMA is somewhat fishy.. Good luck with the tournament, it sounds like an original and nice idea :)

Yes, I guess this plan for acquiring a prize may be a little too much in the "scoundrel" theme. Personally, I seldom use my collected items for game play. I just collect them in my ATMA museum and play each new character untwinked. Nonethesess, using items from one of your HC characters that died is certainly to be frowned upon.

I would be interested in hearing other opinions on whether or not it is a problem if the item was "given up" by someone else's dead adventurer and then offered as a prize. If it is a problem, I could substitute items from dead characters with equivalent items from my museum. Other ideas are welcome along with the opinions.

San Juche Paladin Normal-Act 1 1 1
Sounds like fun, and it's been a while since my last tourney!

Edit: Looting dead HC chars is okay with me. I do it myself. (I just couldn't give up that Tal's Adjudication :p )

Are these points awarded instantly, never to be revoked, or are they only allocated at the time of the characters death/retirement? That is to say, if I find and equip all three items of Death's Set, do I automatically get 30 permanent points, or are they lost once I take the set off?
This sounds kind of fun. I thought that instead of taking the items off of the dead HC players for the prize, you should maybe just have people give items out of the 16 item ATMA stash to you when they die for the prize. People might not mind that as much.

edit* I also think that you might want to limit the fishymancers some way. I mean using a cracked wand and cracked necro head isnt going to hinder the build at all. If not i think it will be by far the easiest build to play.

The intent is to score whatever you are currently carrying. I realize that this allows someone to carry a biggins bonnet around in their stash and then only put it on when they die, but that is ok. It reminds me of the tradition of dressing the corpse in their sunday best suit when you load them in the coffin. The winner will be rewarded both for how far they get in the game and the quality of their finery when they turn in their character file. When you update the status table, just count what you are wearing. When you die, count what you choose to be wearing for the crowds of people that file by the coffin. You can never claim more than what you are wearing!

You are the second person to note that the necromancer has very little penalty. I agree and am considering limiting skeleton mastery and golem mastery to five assigned skill points. Please comment on this and offer any other suggestions you might have. (others feel free to chime in also, we still have several days before the start date)
I'm not sure I have a real good basis to give an opinion on the Necro issue.

But, tourneys are right up my alley, and this one looks interesting. With so many others having just begun, or going on, it'll have to join the ranks. So, count me in.
I'm personally not going to participate as it's a bit too much hassle for me (I prefer tournies with odd builds... and sometimes tournies with certain kinds of restrictions appeal to me too), but I would point out that the necro can make a standard cookie cutter build with just the current build options given

Raise skeleton 20
Skeleton mastery 20
1 revive
1 clay colem
5 summon resist
1 in each curse

Voila, done. You can even add 20 in skeleton mages if you want, or put 20 points in clay golem for boss killage.

I wouldn't go so far as to nuke it down to 5 points each tho... that'd make the summon tree fairly pointless.

Sorceresses, on the other hand, are completely screwed with an incredible lack of good gear, and having to spend 30 points on crap, on top of restrictions on their good spells.
Looks fun, and I love the intro, and the reasons for the restricitons!

Necro needs a bit more limiting, and sorc need more options. Would letting the necro only put a max of 15 points in any skill be enough penalty? If not 12 points might.

For the sorc, limit TK and TP to 5 points each, or else there will not be enough skill points for any build really. And raise the limit for level 30 skills to 10 or 15, I think that'd be enough.
Another possible shift in Necro and Sorc skills

My current thought is to limit the Necro to 10 assigned points in Skeleton Mastery and Golem Mastery.

As for the sorceress, thirty wasted points is a little extreme. I like the idea of Telekinesis and Teleport having a minimum requirement of 5 points each. But the other skills should remain as stated. (I think.)

I am open to more comments and won't change the rules until Monday. By the way, how can I edit the original post? I imagine there is some way to override the edit function timeout.
Sounds interesting. If I wasn't so busy with RL and the 3-way tourney, I'd join in.

Nope, you can't edit after 1 hour. You'll need to made a new post.

Never played a pure Fire sorc have you? ;) They are absolute pwnage.

Not that Telekinesis isn't useful (synergy for Energy Shield).. or Teleport either, but, I think 30 points in those skills is a bit harsh. 10 or 15 would be good.
The Game Begins

Since the tournament officially starts on November 1st, the decision on the Necromancer and Sorceress characters must be made.

Therefore, here it is:

The Necromancer has the following restrictions: The Skeleton Mastery is limited to ten assigned points. The Golem Master is limited to five assigned points. The only other restrictions are those given in the original posted instructions.

The Sorceress has the following change in restrictions: The Telekinesis and Teleport skills require one-third of your skill points starting with level 6. However, this is limited to five assigned skill point in each of them. Of course, you can assign more if you like. The warmth skill is still limited to a maximum of one assigned skill point.

All other character skill restrictions are the same as mentioned on the opening post.

That's probably about right, 'cos then that weakens the mages too, and the revives.

Don't know if I'll take part, having trouble keeping up in the ones I'm currently in.
Code:

Wolron Lynx Sorceress Normal-Act 1 1 1

Jungleboy Gerin Assasin Normal-Act 1 1 1

Count me in. Don't know how an assasin will go with only broken weapons but there is only one way to find out!
I guess im going to be in with a pally. Should be fun.
There is little said about mercs in the descirption. I gather that you can hire a merc ok, but are there any restrictions to the gear that they can have? IE: do they need to wear inferior or unique/set/forged weapons like you PC? or can they use any type of weapon.

You certainly can hire a mercenary. You do not force your own values on the mercenary. He/she can wear any armor and use any weapon subject to their usual restrictions. After all, good help is hard to find.

Also, you receive no scoring points for unique or set items that they equip.
