~~Introduction~~
Hey all, I wanted to start and document an mf project on here. I was running my pitzerker and trying to get better efficiency and getting frustrated being stuck around the same runtimes. Even though I'm sure it would be the best way to improve on that front, I just don't seem to have the inclination, or maybe attention span, for grinding on one character for a super long time. One of the main things I enjoy about d2 is its variety, so I would prefer to play many characters. But I was hungry for more golden elites, having got some really lucky grailers running that zerker, so I decided to start this project! I think I'll enjoy it much more than an impressively long grind with one character. Hopefully my skills will continue to improve anyways, but either way I'll have some fun and should get some grailers as well :).

I twinked this sorc quickly through the game over the weekend (as always, needing more socket quests). And she started p1 tunnels at the young age of lvl 68. Rolled for a map I think is pretty good, and which I tested very briefly, and she quickly got to 79 before I started the 1k runs. Ofc if I find fathom at some point in the project, a return and repeat will be in order ;). I'm a couple of hundred in aready and at 83, the merc upgraded to this beauty:

Counted bosses over 20 runs (ten from the video I'll post), and averaged 6.2 bosses! So I think it's even better than I thought. I don't count bosses during the majority of my running, so I'll be using that 6.2 number for the stats at the end of the round. No guarantees 20 runs is indicative of the avg over 1000, but good enough for me!

Sample Runs
In later rounds, I doubt I'll have sample runs till pretty much the end of the round, but since I didn't post this till I was already a couple of hundred runs in, I already have a video.

The video had 542 mf because I forgot I wanted to add in an fhr sc to hit 60fhr. Runtimes started around 50s, but now the avg is below 45, and I think I can push to 40 :). If any of the good AT runners (or anyone) want to give me some pointers, I'm all ears.

I'll post a big ole summary as well as whatever the next 1k runs will be here in a couple of weeks when I finish this one!

Finished up the 1k runs with the blizz sorc! Really enjoyed the character and had a crazy number of tc87 uniques (8), even if only one was a grailer and none were useful.

Pretty happy with that average time, especially since I think my map was averaging more than 6 bosses. So i used the 42.385, and the 6.2 average bosses I counted over 20 runs and come up with an adjeff of 2.53. Nothing amazing by any stretch, but I've got no idea how other guys on the forum do runs in the low 30s. Maybe someday! And here is the progression of my runtimes. I was glad to get a couple of stretches in under 40s.

Thoughts on the Character
Blizz sorc is overall my favorite character for sure. I'm just basic I suppose. I didn't know though if I was going to come around entirely to running p1 with her. Was used to letting blizz do its work on higher hp enemies while static'ing and finding more charms/gems/runes. But I definitely came around :). The fast runs got fun and the excellent uniques made this run a favorite for sure. The playstyle is great. She can be played simply and mindlessly (hit em from the top and hit em from the front), or you can work on optimizing with things such as multitasking your engagements, placing your blizzards, and telestomping the right bosses, etc. I'll return to her soon I'm sure and hopefully push my efficiency a little further.

What's Next
Next up I'm going to run some pits hdin. I have him geared up and think I have an ok map on him (seems nice except quite far from waypoint). He has 595 mf with ist'd wizzy and 125fcr. And look at this charm layout. Brings a tear to my eye.

If I find an extra ist, I'll likely switch from wizzy to branch for the extra skill, and I also want to test 75fcr with a 6ist phase blade on him. This set will likely take a lot longer since pit runs take longer in general, and I'll also be focusing on RFL rounds 2 and 3, but I'll be back sometime soon(ish) with a detailed write-up on his gear, map, and I'll have some sample runs!

This is my hdin, who has mostly just run chaos. I felt like doing an easyish pit runner next and figured he fit the bill well :). I'll be interested to see how closet to lvl 95 he gets by the end if I can manage to not die too many times with him. I'm a little over 300 runs in so far, and no deaths yet, but the rare NDE's do occur with nasty archers. I'll also repost his sick charm layout.

Gear
I tried out a couple of things with his gear. My first inclination was ist'd wizspike, but I realized he just doesn't need the mana and resists it offers, so figured branch was superior for the extra skill. That being said, I don't notice a runtime increase when using wizzy, but see no reason I wouldn't use branch just in case. Also I figured out I could maintain 125fcr and stack more mf if I used a 20fcr circlet and a 6ist phase blade. I ended up not going that route just because the 1/20 pala circlet and 2/20 pcomb circlets I have aren't worth a socket quest imo. I also think the mana pool would be so low with no shako and no mana from the weapon slot that I would have to use an fcr ring with a lot of mana rather than one with mf, though that would still offer more mf. I'll talk a little more about mana pool in the next paragraph.

The other setup I tried out was simply replacing ist'd branch with the 6ist pb and running on 75 fcr. I figured it would slow things down too much to have a chance at winning, but it's fun running around with 745mf on a paladin. Anyways I ran it 50 runs and got the following result.

So they came out pretty close. The 6ist pb was definitely more clunky. The ~660 mana total actually caused a few minor mana issues, as opposed to the ~690 mana with branch. Very minor, but more noticeable than the drop from ~900 to 690 from going from wizzy to branch. And ofc he would get block locked while trying to tele more often. Plus faster tele's just feel better. So those, along with that efficiency comparison, mean I'll be sticking with 125fcr for the rest of the runs, but the 75fcr high mf approach is definitely solid.

For the merc, his main purpose is just to be there holding insight. So I wanted a prayer merc for convenience (I love not having to pot). But I also quickly realized that he gets a lot of kills too, due to him taking charge when I'm sometimes missing with my hammers. So I decided to give him a load of mf with the shako skullders setup. He mostly does fine down there without leech, but does die on occasion. That's 214 mf added to any kills he gets, for a total of 809 (and when I was running that 6ist pb 75fcr setup, it was 959mf on merc kills 😳). Not sure if this is better than just giving him more powerful gear to where he kills faster (or using a might merc), but whatever, it's fun having that extra mf. Anyways here's the setups.

This heat map is again just over 5 runs. I find doing this exercise even over only 5 runs, to be very helpful. Really helps you remember where to look for bosses and figure out your tele path. I thinks it's a quite nice map, except for the big disadvantage that the entrance is 16-17 tele's from the waypoint while using extended tele. I also counted bosses over 20 runs (including the 8 runs from the video below), and get 8.1 bosses on average. So like before I'll be using this for efficiency estimation over the 1k runs. My goal is to avg sub 3 fabians with this guy, which may not sound great until you compare that I was over 2.5 with the tunnels blizz sorc.

Should finish this up here in a week or two at most, but definitely before RFL round 3 starts, and will decide on 3rd set runner at that point too. Cheers :coffee:.

@Babyhell nice and thank you! Not that its a super novel idea, we all like those round numbers of runs, but I was definitely inspired by @J-Dog's past running threads :) I'm having a ton of fun with the project so far. Hope I keep it going a long time.
 
Cool project, I really enjoy reading all the stats so thanks for keeping a detailed record!

Runtimes started around 50s, but now the avg is below 45, and I think I can push to 40 :)

I see you've exceeded your expectation in the end, but maybe I can still help out a bit. Most of these are minor time saves, but will add up over the course of many runs. It's also possible you've ironed out the gameplay since you've made this video, sorry if I've covered something you've already improved on :)

You got the second best Rogue Encampment layout, which is much better than the "tent" or the dreaded "caravan" setup.

I think you don't have to stand so close to activate the WP though. It's annoying when TK fails, but finding that sweet spot will shave off a few ms.

In my opinion, casting BO here breaks the flow. I'd just focus on getting to the trap door by moving the mouse all the way to the top right during act transition.

Since the AT entrance is a bit far you could try extended TPing with the inventory screen open. Although the TP direction is ideal for this, at short distances it can be quite annoying and make you overshoot the target.

When you stop TPing and click the entrance, hit the weapon switch while to sorc is walking / AT is loading. Cast BO when inside and switch back to TP.

The map layout is great, you never have to TP "down" where the HUD is blocking part of the screen, but try to keep the cursor closer to the edge to make the most out of this advantage.

Assessing the situation and making a plan will make you react slower, but once you get used to and practice these patterns they become second nature.

You should have cast blizzard on the marauders, they are moving towards you so aim somewhere between the boss and the sorc. Then IB the mage from close range.

Circled is a minion from the other mage group which has also been awakened and started moving to the right.

If you had cast blizzard there and TPed to the right side mage, the left group would have probably followed and walked into the same blizzard. With a bit of good RNG, you'd be killing 3 uniques at roughly the same time.

You TPed over one boss pack to a safe spot and found another pack, which is good, but then you walked back and forth all while the sorc was chilled. It'd be best to cast blizzard close to the right zombie, then TP to the left group and try to ice blast the boss while blizzard's timer is on cooldown.

Once the left group is down, you'd TP towards the next room, ideally, the zombie on the right would be dead and you'd just need to scan the drops.

Blizzard has issues hitting targets when they're standing next to walls or pillars. Additionally, this was an ideal situation for ice blast, which you did use to kill the boss in the end, but after casting blizzard :)

@Albatross wow thanks so much! I was hoping you'd chime in with some advice, but this was wayy better than I hoped for. Those kinds of super-specific tips are exactly what I need. I've not been practicing the sorc at all since I finished that set of 1k runs, but now a return should be in order sooner rather than later ;). And like the tip on when to BO is gold. I'm always messing up the sequence, and despite having watched your video and read your guide more than a couple of times, somehow didn't notice you were doing it differently. And rest assured, I set the goal for 40s because that seemed possible. I would absolutely love to achieve sub 2 adjeff with her eventually. And I love getting feedback to improve, so I really appreciate you taking the time for such a nice and detailed post.

Btw, I was planning to add a section about positioning, monster AI, etc. to the guide but never go to it. Might still in the future.

@Albatross Appreciated at any time. And glad to hear it on the guide. A casual suggestion I have is somehow incorporating that discussion down in the comments where you drew a "there and back" map in paint (here) into the guide. Because I thought I understood what you meant about the monster spawns in the guide, but it didn't fully click till I saw that discussion. Also if you ever feel like making a voiceover tips video, like ffs did with his trav sorc, that would also be something that could be very helpful imo. Anyways, not trying to demand a lot 😅 you've done more than enough and it's much appreciated.
 
@Albatross yep! A little farther unfortunately. I love pit maps where black marsh is is close. Should wrap up this 1k set in the next day or two though, and doubt ill be keeping the pit map on him for very long afterwards. At least it's in a nice straight line for the extended tele i guess, but it does waste quite a bit of time.

Wanted to get my avg runtime down under 65s, and that was a success! Would have loved to get a 100ish run segment in at under 60s, but that didn't quite happen. So with 64.66s runtime, and the 8.1 average bosses I counted over 20 runs, I get an adjeff of 2.89. Nice I was hoping for sub 3 on him. Here is the runtime progression.

Thoughts on the Character
Hdin is one of my favorite chars in general, and I'd say overall he was quite good at this run. But the need for precise positioning for telestomping and tons of clicking and shift usage make him not as fun as other p1 mf characters for me. Prefer him as p7+ in CS I think. This is the character I die the least with BY FAR, and didn't die once with him during these runs, despite very few defensive measures taken. I was running holy shield ofc, but was at mis 60s block since I didn't want to respec him from his chaos gear, and I was running a prayer merc. So all that said, he gets a good rating overall, mid rating on fun, and great rating on survivability. Could see this being a really nice run for HC mf'ing.

What's Next
I think the next character will be a wind druid running ancient tunnels. However, I'm not going to start him till after RFL round 3, so I could change my mind before then, but we shall see! Want to do some testing on him for infinity vs insight, nwv vs shako, doom vs 6ist weapon vs hoto vs ist wizzy. Lots of stuff to consider.

So I did end up having time to get this set started before RFL round 3 began, and I'm even 360 runs in already. However testing my map and different setups on this guy has been quite a saga, but I think I've got a map, setup, and route that I'm happy with. He's definitely going to be the least efficiency of the three chars so far, but let's see if I can whittle down these runtimes before the end of the set.

A few things to explain above. When I was doing this testing, I tired skipping a large portion of my map. Later I found out that it was cutting my boss count much more than I thought. Hence the disappointing avg of 5.2 bosses in the table. But I'm now running a longer route with a higher boss average. More on that later.

So of course 20 runs near the beginning of a set is not enough for any concrete data. However it's enough for me to get a feel for what I'm liking and see if any setups are a lot better or worse than others. I would say the data suggests that either the hoto shako infinity, doom shako insight, or 6ist setup is best for me, and personally I am comfortable moving forward with any of the three. The 4th setup, where I ran hurricane-only, I just wanted to see if this lazyman playstyle was viable, and I'd say it definitely is! But I was (barely) not lazy enough to go that route.

Now its no secret I'm an insight fanboy. Bad enough that I'm beginning to suspect that a large reason my favorite characters are what they are is in no small part because they have an insight merc. Of course its far from the end of the world drinking a mana pot once a run, but I feel so freeee not having to even think about it. So all that to say, I think I'm moving ahead with the insight doom alternate. Plus its fun that it gives me an excuse to use doom, and just an axe-wielding wind druid with insight merc is kinda zany and fun. Interesting character with the two types of dmg used in about equal proportion. I may switch back to infinity a bit before the end of the set to give it another chance, and if I do, I may also try phoenix on swap for mana, but I can't imagine waiting for redemption to tick won't lose some time.

Entrance is there near the bottom of the pic. 2 teleports to entrance. Boss average on this map over 30ish runs was 6.15. A bit of backtracking with that leg on the right, but I'll definitely take it. This one took a little longer to roll than the maps I had on the other two characters in this thread. More like 2-3 hours on this one, whereas the others took less than an hour.

For several runs (including the phase where I was setting different setups), I started skipping ALL of the northeast tiles. It sped up my runs nicely, and it at least felt like I wasn't missing out on many packs, but after counting 20 runs, I was at only a 5.2 boss avg with this route. So I tested runtimes on the longer route (I'll show the route below) and it does indeed come out ahead with that more juicy 6.15 boss average. Had 9 bosses a couple of times on this map too. I think there's one near the beginning of my sample runs video below.

This one will be a while probably before I complete it even though I'm a decent amount in already, just because I plan on doing RFL round 3 stuff for the entire duration of the next 3 weeks, but then I'll finish this one up! ~~~Set 3 Recap~~~
I keep finding grailers outside this project! Not that I'm complaining, but since my RFL round 3 necro found me mang song and wisp, I'll change the status table to say this round started at grail -8. Finished up the set with the wind druid! Much less tc87 s/u's than the first two rounds, which to be fair, they were a bit absurd, but one grailer, and one crazy find right at the end.

Definitely the slowest character yet. Getting sub 50s with him would be doable for me with more practice, but sub 3 adjeff would be tough for me. My boss average was estimated at 6.15, but I did ~200 runs of testing on a route with about 5.2 bosses, so I will reduce the total boss count to 6k accordingly. For the efficiency calc, I thought about only counting the latter 640 runs, after my gear and route had been established, but those runs were done at a lower avg time than my overall average. So I'm going to use 6.1 boss average and the average runtime displayed to get an estimated adjeff of 3.18. Was glad I got a coupe of stints in under 50s.

Found that eth astreons with like 40 runs remaining and was STOKED. I now have 2 astreons, one is eth, and I only have 1 gris caddy :ROFLMAO:.

Thoughts on the Character
I'll add this section to the two previous set recaps as well. The windy was fairly fun. I started enjoying him much more when I decided to run doom and insight merc. I hate drinking potions, and doom is just cool. Had some fun positional play possibilities where you can get multiple bosses/champs within your hurricane. When that happens I think its also best to kill the tankiest enemy first while your hurricane whittles down the others. Examples were if two bosses were in my hurricane and one was CI, I'd throw my nados his way while the hurricane works on the other. Or if I happen to see a possessed in a champ group, I focused my nados on him. Also I'm sure maxing arctic blast (like I know gripphon had done in the past) would be more efficient, as my one point arctic blast isn't even noticeably more dmg against the PI's, and a CE/PI just takes a really long time. But I didn't want to respec or die much, so I kept my stronger oak sage. So overall pretty fun, not terribly efficient. Most fun use of the druid I've done yet (not that that's saying much :p), but I haven't played a fire druid yet either. I foresee that happening soon in this character's future, though likely outside this thread. And would be nice to find ravenlore first.

What's Next
Next, I'm going to run a p1 necro in the pits. Want to get my necro to 95, and he already has an acceptable map. I also eventually want to have done a round with every class. I'll likely be doing amp+ce only, and want to test ist'd branch (125 fcr) vs 6ist crystal sword (75fcr), as well as infinity vs ebotd and fort vs treachery on the merc. Should be fun. After this round though, I think I'm gonna need to do a round with sorc again or with barb, to breathe in the true mf efficiency for some fresh air ;).
