Thoughts:
19/30 sorceress skills maxed. Wow, I feel like I learned a lot from playing and matting this character.

I spent 62 skill points to fully synergize all three cold armor skills, and I'm rather happy with the results of that experiment! However, if I could go back in time a few months to give myself advice, I probably would not recommend fully synergized cold armors. I might instead suggest spending just 43 or 44 points in the cold tree to max the Shiver and Chilling armor skills, and leave Frozen Armor for some other sorceress build. My reasons:
  • The primary benefit of each cold armor skill is its defense boost; however, there are no defense synergies among the cold armors.
  • Each cold armor gets a spell effect synergy from the other armor skills: longer freeze duration to Frozen Armor, and higher cold damage to Shiver and Chilling Armors. But tactically, their spell effects are merely nice to have. They are not recommended methods for hurting monsters, because in order to have a chance at triggering a cold armor spell effect, a sorceress must risk getting damaged. Compared to other character classes, it is difficult to build a sorceress that can reliably absorb damage. For those reasons, I just can't persuade myself that cold armor spell effect synergies are worthy investments. (Again: defense is the useful characteristic of any cold armor. Once an armor skill is maxed, further synergy expenditures will not improve defense.)
  • Each cold armor gets a duration synergy from the other armor skills. The extra duration almost never mattered, because I would often switch between armors with situational re-casting, depending on whatever monsters Lengby was fighting -- Shiver Armor against melee attackers or Chilling Armor against ranged attackers. (Fully synergized, Lengby's Shiver Armor buffs last more than twelve-and-a-half minutes, and Chilling Armor lasts eleven minutes. An Enchant charge from the Demon Limb also lasts eleven minutes, so I concede that perhaps it was somewhat convenient to have comparable buff durations, reminding me to refresh her cold armor whenever she and her mercenary needed another Enchant.)
In consideration of the cold armor skills, defense was the important attribute I looked for while selecting her equipment. With the mercenary's Defiance aura and Lengby's Chilling Armor both active, the LCS reported her defense number as 13,938, and reported monsters' chances to hit somewhere between 5% and 25%. Her defense was even higher with Shiver Armor: 14,513, enough to lower corresponding chances-to-hit by a percent.

Body armor is the most significant equipment slot for building up defense. A Prudence runeword in an etheral armor would have been a better choice for spectacular defense and better resistances, but I preferred to dress her up in a Stone runeword. Stone gives very good defense, very fast hit recovery, and my favorite: Clay Golem charges. Indeed, Lengby's equipment features a lot of fun spell charges:
  • Enchant (level 23, Demon Limb) - used constantly from character level 63 onward. Her melee capability is decidedly mediocre without this.
  • Clay Golem (level 16, Stone) - used constantly from character level 54 onward.
  • Molten Boulder (level 16, Stone) - seldom cast, but I did find them quite useful in certain maggot tunnels and durance doorways.
  • Iron Golem (level 22, Metalgrid) - seldom cast, and quickly killed the few times I did try to use one
  • Iron Maiden (level 11, Metalgrid) - seldom cast, but seemed to be a somewhat effective curse against Talic
To choose Lengby's weapon, I looked up the strength she would need to use the Demon Limb, and then filtered GoMule stashes to show other weapons that could be used with that much strength. Viperfork was the top contender. Sorceresses enjoy the same attack speed with spears as do Amazons. Viperfork's IAS lets her poke even faster, and with an attached jewel of fervor, Lengby was able to surpass another attack speed breakpoint! (According to https://d2.lc/IAS/ she achieved 12 frames per normal attack. From my gameplay observations, that seems accurate). After my experience fending and jabbing with Phthia's spear, I was happy to again melee at long range from behind a minion! (Just as Phthia thrusted her long spear over the shoulder of a decoy, Lengby stabbed her pointy stick over the hunchback of a clay golem.) One of the best features of Viperfork was its corpse-disposal capability, in the form of its frequent chance-to-cast Poison Explosion on striking -- very helpful to abate shamans' and mummies' annoying revivals.

I could have squeezed a little more fire damage out of the Enchant spell charges if I had put more spare points into Fire Mastery, but I judged that Static Field with a longer range was more effective, so I diverted skill points accordingly. Not only did maxed Warmth pack a lot of fire damage synergy into Enchant charges, it also let her recover mana quickly after teleporting. Even with depleted mana, she could teleport again if she could wait and stay alive for about three or four seconds. So I didn't even bother putting any blue potions in her belt; another column of healing potions sure made it easier for Lengby to to keep on fighting while getting hurt.

I had planned on putting a better armor on the mercenary in late Hell difficulty, but he survived so well with his gemmed "Artisan's" magic armor that I never noticed any need to dress him otherwise.

Thoughts:

Several months ago, I posted about my assassin's frustrating encounter with a stone-skin superunique monster, un-killable because it kept replenishing its own health faster than she could damage it. To cope with her failure, she went shopping at Charsi's, where she stumbled upon a weapon "of vileness." She purchased it, and in her re-match with the superunique, used it to turn her previous defeat into glorious victory.

When Kibble reached hell difficulty, he frequently found himself in similar situations. His mercenary and all of his furry pets only do physical damage, so for every physical-immune monster, my druid can't rely on minions. He has to bring his own non-physical damage to the fight. To this end, these are Kibble's chosen missile weapons:
  • Buriza-do Kyanon (I'm pretty sure this is Engrish for "ballista-sytle cannon")
  • Kuko Shakaku (I'm pretty sure this is Engrish for "words with hard 'k' sounds are inherently funny")
On average, these deliver 114 cold or 161 fire damage per successful strike, respectively. Unfortunately, there were many PI monster packs that could replenish their own health about as fast as these could reduce it, especially at higher /players settings. The same was true of other unique missile weapons with elemental damage, such as Skystrike or Langer Briser. Hellrack could deliver more, but unlike Nearch, Kibble didn't want to waste a lot of strength and dexterity points to lug around that big clunky weapon. So he went looking for something that would "prevent monster healing." He found and created this:

Essentially, this runeword is Kibble's innovation to the classic hunter build. It was exchanged from the stash to use against almost every PI monster. One strike from Venom to shut down healing, and then switch back to the other weapon to slowly finish it off.

Venom doesn't provide any enhanced damage to a weapon, except for poison (1.82 poison damage per animation frame for 150 frames, which really isn't very much). So I can't imagine that Venom would ever be a focus or primary weapon in a successful build strategy. But for my hunter, it shines in its particular auxiliary role. Sadly, the runeword's Mal-inscribed magic pebble which provides "prevent monster heal" is a little expensive. There are much cheaper sources of this attribute, such as Malice, but that runeword only works in melee combat. With his Venom blade bow, Kibble quickly delivers the hurt and remains at range, where the monsters can only smell him, rather than up close where they can taste him.

Maxing Summon Spirit Wolf brings the maxed druid skills count to 19/30. My sixth sept in this project is now completed.

Next up: After shopping and gambling and transmuting and stashing many dozens of belts and gloves and so forth, level 69 Yanina has grown tired of commerce and crafting. She will now return to her quests. Hopefully, she will soon achieve matriarch; that event will belatedly complete the fourth sept. :sneaky:

Thanks, @PhineasB! I'm looking forward to starting the seventh sept. I expect it to be the most difficult so far. The expected difficulty isn't about new challenging skills that I have yet to max. Rather, it's due to the precedents set by you and earlier by Nightfish that a seventh sept should comprise nine characters instead of seven! 😰

One of my reasons for equipping so many golden-yellow rare items, or sometimes even a magic blue or gemmed socketed gray, has been to shore up specific weaknesses in these characters as they work their way through hell difficulty. The most common aim has been to get higher resistances. When I observe healthy resistance mods on a found, imbued, or crafted item, I stash it, especially if it has other desirable mods like FRW, IAS, skills, etc. My catch-all GoMule stash currently has a little over four thousand entries in it. When I gear questing characters for hell, I do look first among stashed uniques and sets. (Lately, I've been dabbling in some runewords as well.) But for resistances, to find what I need, I usually have better luck among the rares and crafts.

Another reason for equipping rares: I have not made a habit of re-using unique gear from previous mats/pats. I'm not opposed to doing so; there are some pieces that appear on more than one of the characters reported here (or here). Now that I have an ethereal Reaper's Toll, Enigma, and more sufficient high runes to make other coveted goodies like Chains of Honor or Call to Arms, I'll likely feel more incentive to pass these niceties around to other characters.

Yet another reason: novelty! Azrael, the town guard that accompanies my rapid trapper/shopper Yanina, has been doing quite well with a rare hard-hitting partizan that features 5% ctc Amplify Damage. That feature has led to subtly unusual battle flows in my gameplay that I hadn't noticed or experienced before. I kind of want to see how far he can go with it before I'm persuaded to give him some other weapon. Who knows; maybe I'll decide to burn some runes in a cube recipe to upgrade it rather than exchange it.

The PRNG has been kind to me during the last four years, such that I keep finding new copies of some of my favorite unique items. My latest GoMule Flavie document shows that I own eighteen Kelpie Snares and twelve Hone Sundans; those have been my favorite act 2 mercenary weapons. Only ten of them (five of each) are actually in the hands of a mercenary, so I have plenty more for twinking without having to share them among future heroes. I have found fifteen Raven Frost rings, probably the easiest way to keep the chills away from a toon. Only eleven Raven Frosts are currently equipped, so at least four upcoming questing characters can get one without having to borrow from a previous victor. I'm also surprised to have found thirteen Gheed's Fortune charms so far! (Alas, they have all been distributed, so maybe I should make Kibble share his.) 🤓

According to the translator app on my smartphone, "Kuko Shakaku" is Swahili for "There's a doubt." When I set the app to translate from Swedish instead of autodetecting the language as Swahili, it left "Kuko Shakaku" untranslated.

Thoughts:
Yanina started with a mad dash to see how far she could progress before she hit character level 69, recommended to me as an ideal level for shopping and crafting. After nightmare difficulty, differences between character and monster levels significantly diminished her mercenary's chances to hit. On the other hand, her Fire Blast and fixed sentry traps cast spell powers that always inflict elemental damage, regardless of relative character/monster levels. With this in mind, I mostly ignored her mercenary's welfare, and raced through acts as fast as her traps and maxed Burst of Speed skill could take her. She managed to defeat Duriel in hell difficulty not long after reaching level 69.

After that achievement, Yanina's shopping sprees could plunder all of the vendors in the Rogue Encampment, Lut Gholein, and Kurast Docks. I outfitted her up in as many "BIS-BOS" (best-in-slot for burst-of-speed) items as I could find in my stashes, such as:
  • magic 'Shadow' claw class weapons (two of them gave +6 shadow disciplines)
  • a really nice Witch-Hunter's Coronet of Speed (+2 assassin skills, 30% FRW)
  • magic Greaves of Acceleration (40% FRW)
  • Stealth runeword (25% FRW) -- Trang-Oul's Scales gave higher FRW, but required a couple of strength charms to equip. Stealth and a few Inertia charms were just as effective.
Dressed to shop, Yanina spent most of a full year sprinting around towns (and out-and-back into towns to reset inventories), searching for and purchasing various exceptional (and sometimes even elite) gloves, belts, boots, and occasionally other merchandise. As other heroes achieved Pat/Mat status, they entrusted their leftover gold to Yanina. With this lucrative revenue of "other peoples' money," she just couldn't resist visits to Elzik's and Alkor's casino tables! Gambled equipments' item levels varied a little bit, compared to shopped items. Nevertheless, gambled stuff almost always crafted just as effectively as shopped stuff, and gambling was generally a much faster way to acquire preferred ingredients for crafting.

In addition to taking their gold, she also took and crafted many blue items provided by the other characters. She was crafting somewhere between ten and fifteen items per week. She kept and stashed more than 150 of them, and sold the disappointing craft rolls for more cash. Many of her best crafts were actually used by my other Mats/Pats over the last year. When the year-long crafting sabbatical was over, she changed back into questing clothes, including a few of her crafts. She completed previously skipped quests, and also re-ran areas in hell acts 1 and 2 to level up her mercenary to level 79. After that she sped through the remaining quests and acts. Her freeze-aura mercenary did okay with a nice rare partizan that sometimes proc'ed Amplify Damage curses, right up until they faced the Ancients. He repeatedly melted within seconds of tapping the Arreat Summit's altar. Yanina tried and failed five times to solo the Ancients. After those defeats, I upgraded the mercenary's armor from exceptional to elite, and swapped his weapon for The Reaper's Toll. The sixth try against the Ancients was successful, quick, and relatively painless.

Over the past few years, I have not kept track of how many Eld runes have been consumed in the Horadric Cube to upgrade low-quality claw weapons (chiefly hand scythes and greater claws) in the Horadric Cube, hoping for +3 rolls on low-level staffmods. Most were duds, but three successes were put to excellent use by Yanina:
  • One of them was turned into a Strength runeword. In addition to regular Burst of Speed buffing, its Tiger Strike and Claw Mastery staffmods were also used for melee against unique FI/LI monsters. I was surprised at how often such monsters appeared, but Strength connected enough crushing blows to get rid of each of them.
  • Another pair of formerly low-quality hand scythes were used for tossing Fire Blast grenades. Their combined +6 to Fire Blast more than doubled that skill's average fire damage per toss. One of those also has a +1 Psychic Hammer staffmod, used once to pin a nasty FI against a wall while the hireling and lightning traps brought it down.
Yet another pair of claws combined to add +6 to Lightning Sentry. When equipped, they increased those sentries' average lightning damages by about 50%. This third pair of claws usually remained in the stash, but were retrieved for fights against act bosses, most superuniques, and a few particularly pesky fire immunes.

Burst of Speed and Fire Blast are the new maxed skills; my assassins have maxed 18/30.

Thoughts:
What a fun build! I greatly underestimated the power and utility of Multiple Shot. My expectations were low after only reading a few multizon write-ups during the skills census. I did notice advice to equip "mana stolen per hit" equipment. I was grateful for that advice, but I think I might have provisioned too much: Jilted enjoyed 24% mana stolen per hit and four mana per kill. With attacks that delivered hundreds of damage per strike, each successful hit would instantly fill her blue globe to its top. She only needed to drink blue-juice when she was fightning skeletons.

I knew Multiple Shot's gameplay mechanics would look and feel similar to the Teeth spell attacks that I enjoyed so much last year with Zooter, my dentist necromancer. But in 1.14, Teeth don't pierce. (I understand that's no longer the case as of last year's D2R patches.) With her maxed Pierce skill, 85% of her arrows pass through and attack other monsters, and Multiple Shot's area of effect becomes so much larger than any other AoE skill in the game. With over 300 dexterity, her elite Eaglehorn unique crusader bow fires 22 arrows that do way more (physical) damage than Zooter could do (magic damage) with his maxed and fully synergized Teeth. When she tags a skills shrine, her Multiple Shot temporarily fires its maximum complement of 24 arrows per attack.

The maxed Avoid skill also surprised me. For several battles against beetles and other lightning-enchanted monsters, Jilted released volley after volley of fanned arrows, and those little charged bolt spiders would creep back toward her. As long as she held her ground, I would usually hear that "whoa" noise, and the spiders would just harmlessly pass on by. But what really surprised me was when I learned that the Avoid animation would actually alter the amazon's targeting. It was funny to watch a series of arrow-fans fly away to the intended targets, but see one fan in the sequence get diverted way over to the side, because she avoided a missile.

I tried Enigma when Jilted reached level 69, but changed my mind before she reached level 70. Amazons cast spells so slowly! Sometimes it felt like she could run faster than she could teleport! I know, that's not true, but I have become spoiled with sorceresses' rapid teleport travel. Jilted even died a few times trying to teleport away from danger, because monsters would land their blows faster than her cast animation would let her blink away. After a short while I grew tired of slow teleporting. I didn't want to bother looking for suitable fast-cast-rate equipment, so instead I experimented with a different body armor runeword that I hadn't yet tried.

The newly maxed skills are Multiple Shot, Pierce, and Avoid. Now I have maxed 20/30 amazon skills.

If you have never played a Multiple Shot amazon, please, try building one! Five stars. Thumbs up. I recommend.

Next up: a day before Jilted reached matriarch, I started another character.

I have only maxed two curse skills (Lower Resist and Terror) so far in this project, and I plan for Immund to max two more (Amplify Damage and Attract).

Hestia is the Greek "Goddess of the Hearth," and the inspiration for a curious character in the Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (DanMachi) mangas and (DanMemo) games.

I'm planning a "Shadow Mentor" build, in which I'll max Shadow Master along with the common passive buffs (Venom, Fade, and Blade Shield) that every Shadow Master always keeps reactivatted between battles.
Hestia is still level one. I twinked a bunch of poison damage equipment (envy jewels) onto her, raced her to the Burial Grounds, quickly put down Blood Raven, and hired a rogue -- just for the temporary novelty of having a mercenary whose level is higher than the level of the sponsoring character:

Rumours have it that Rozene prefers bad boys who can raise prime evils as butlers so maybe she is sulking and cold because she would rather have been hired by Immund? Hestia needs to hand her some thawing potions and a shelf of dark ranger fanfiction, then she will surely warm up.:p

Hey, it worked! I tossed a couple of thawing potions at her (to me they look kind of like omega-3 oil supplement capsules, but whatever). After that, I visited Kashya again. She let me re-hire Rozene to shoot with fire instead of cold!

(In the DanMachi graphic novels, a mercenary archer named Liliruca Arde is hired and eventually adopted into Hestia's family. I'll let Rozene be the understudy that fills in for the unavailable Liliruca. DanMachi isn't quite "dark ranger" fanfic, but its adventurers do explore dungeons collect dropped items from the monsters they kill. Close enough; I guess it will have to do.)

Thoughts:
In his legendary Fishymancer guide, Nightfish presents thoughtful skill analyses in which he defends Amplify Damage and Attract as his most used and most worthwhile curses by dedicated skeleton-summoners/corpse-exploders. I decided to see what would happen if I maxed both of those curses. Together they bring my maxed necromancer skill tally up to 20/30.

Both curses were awesome! Cast at skill level 26, Attract lasts nearly half a minute. Amp lasts nearly a minute and a half, and covers most of the entire screen. I didn't bother assigning a hot key for Attract. Immund did not cast that curse very often, but it was extremely helpful when he was fighting tanky monsters like urdars/blunderbores, thrashers and other tree monsters, or moon lords and other frenzy-minotaurs. On the other hand, I did assign hot-keys to five constantly used skills: Teleport, Amplify Damage, Corpse Explosion, Raise Skeleton, and Clay Golem.

After raising up the skeleton army, I didn't really want to continue to melee with the Arm of King Leoric. That weapon tends to stage impromptu cage matches between the necromancer and whatever he tries to slap with that wand, by trapping both combatants within proc'ed bone prison cages. In my search for a better melee weapon, I took some inspiration from Gix's "Commandomancer" guide. But rather than use any of his suggested weapons, I decided to make Immund chop at monsters with Razor's Edge, a very fast elite melee weapon that reliably applies lots of deadly strikes and open wounds. The lying character screen complained that Immund was only getting around 17-25% chances to hit, but in my observations, Immund usually had closer to 50% chance to strike or miss, thanks to the weapon's "-33% target defense" attribute.

As expected, this build was a rather stress-free character, but still fun.

Next up: Hestia and her somewhat annoying companion Rozene just started nightmare difficulty at level 45. For variety's sake, I also just started a few more new heroes.

I have stubbornly refused to max Battle Orders on the first six barbarian patriarchs in these projects, but since it's such a great Concentrate synergy, I think it's time that I finally relax and enjoy a thick and hearty BO. 👃

Clerics are excellent beginner characters...I have heard. Make sure to make snarky comments about venom lord infernos.

You're absolutely right; I should have Eth'd the Razor's Edge. I can't remember what I did with the third Larzuk quest, but I think it was used on a twinkable item for some other character.

Thoughts:
When Hestia arrived in nightmare difficulty act 2, her trusty mercenary Rozene couldn't hide the truth any longer: her name was actually "Razan," not Rozene. She was a mighty polearm fighter, and all this time she had been convincingly disguised as a fire Rogue and butler-summoner! Hestia, a little less annoyed, welcomed her newly revealed identity and talents, but secretly wondered whether Maltatai had anticipated this plot twist.

Upon reaching hell difficulty, Hestia had maxed Shadow Master and her "pre-buffing" skills, Blade Shield and Venom. She was already getting 75% resists with just one point in Fade, so she pondered other skills while she experimented with her new Chaos weapon. Whirlwind was kind of fun, but at skill level 1, it wasn't really much faster at bringing down enemies than normal attacks. She watched her Shadow indulge in Dragon Flight habits to tele-stomp on monsters, and eventually, Hestia decided to learn and specialize in that skill herself. Soon enough, Hestia stumbled upon a marvelously effective battle tactic: Dragon Flight teleport to a monster, Whirlwind to a short distance beside it, then repeat -- Dragon Flight & brief Whirlwind again until the monster falls. In legacy D2LoD, Dragon Flight has a one-second cool-down, but since Whirlwind has no delay timer, she can always pirouette between teleport-kicks. If a mob starts to get a little scary, it turns out Whirlwind is a much safer way to withdraw from melee than running.

She still used normal attacks a lot, particularly when mana-burned. Chaos still makes every strike pretty strong, even normal attacks, so she seldom felt a need to panic-chug those blue potions.

With Blade Shield and Dragon Flight, maxed assassin skills counter is now 20/30.

Next up: the other four characters are in various nightmare difficulty stages: a charged-bolt sorceress in act 5, a concentrate barbarian in act 4, a furious rabid druid in act 2, and a sanctuary-aura paladin undead hunter in act 1.

Thoughts:
Merry Christmas and happy winter holidays! Gurrah kept many monsters nice and toasty warm, blanketing them under carpets of floating charged bolts and walls of fire. This is my first ever sorceress to spend no points at all in the cold spells tree. Charged Bolt and Fire Wall are the newly maxed skills, bringing the sorceress maxed skill tally up to 21/30.

I suppose her gameplay was pretty straightforward. Shoot lightning at whatever wasn't lightning immune. Summon firewalls under everything that wasn't fire immune. Get up close to act bosses and most other superuniques, zap static a few times, inject charged bolts into them until they're about to fall, then weapon switch to her unique rune staff for a quick MF boost to finish them off. Sadly, this tactic wasn't as effective as I had hoped, as most monsters' drops weren't very interesting. The fights with the ancients were simple and pretty safe. In most hell difficulty areas, there was at least one unique monster dual immune to both fire and lightning, but there was only one of those I had to park and ignore: a cursed frenzytaur in the Ancient's Way. All of the other dual immunes were Telekinesis-pinned against an obstacle and slowly poked away by the mercenary.

Next up: Fornix, the concentrate barbarian "fornixator" (ugh -- Maltatai, I'm so sorry I chose such a horrible name) is currently questing in hell act 2. So is Effete the rabid werewolf. Doctor, my "medicleric," has advanced a few areas into hell act 1, and has turned out surprisingly interesting to play. I hope to be able to share patriarch reports for each of these three in early 2024.

My cube-grail turned skills-grail has now produced 46 pats and mats. As I mentioned before, I feel obliged to follow an SPF custom that a "sept of septs" must have two extra completed characters as well as the the expected "seven times seven." For the eighth and ninth characters in my seventh sept, I'll start these:

Not sure what skills to choose for Cousin's build yet. The ten assassin skills I haven't yet maxed in this project are:
  • (Martial Arts) Fists of Fire, Claws of Thunder, Dragon Tail
  • (Shadow Disciplines) Fade, Weapon Block, Psychic Hammer, Mind Blast
  • (Traps) Shock Web, Charged Bolt Sentry, Blade Sentinel
So I'd like to put 20 of Cousin's skill points into at least one or two of those.
