Dropping out? Did someone drop pharphis on his head again?

Studying is not supposed to be fun or interesting. I realised i made a wrong choice after about a year and a half into it. But i finished mine anyway because i didn't want it to go to waste or try a different one and possibly find out i don't like that one either wasting even more time. So i sucked it up and got through it.

On the upside, now phar will get more time for D2. ;)

Got some bad news yesterday. My mother let me know that they had to put our cat down because he was too ill. :( It was already kinda coming because he was fairly old and lately every time i visited he seemed to have one thing or another with his health. But i really loved that cat. He's also the oldest we've had. We've had plenty of other great cats, but somehow we always had bad luck with them so they never got really old. Like one got hit by a car, another got some disease because of which his nose got shut which resulted in him not being able to eat anymore, etc. So this one is the one we've had the longest. I don't know exactly how old he was, but it surely was over 10 years.

Two days ago i encountered a foe in Destiny that took me out a handful of times after which i decided to try it another time. Yesterday i tried again. He killed me again. After that and a change in strategy however, he was the one to bite the dust. First time i found the shotgun to be really useful. Next step in this questline points me to a place that i did two days ago after giving up on this guy. And i finished that. So at least i know i can take on this part of the quest. Though i find it a bit silly that i still have to do it, even though i already did it. Oh well.

Half done. Ofc, the second half is the worst part and I've lost all interest in it so whatevs

For what it's worth, I have a friend who is about to complete her Masters who felt the exact same way and almost quit halfway through. I asked her if she was happy she stuck it out and her response was:

"I willingly kept doing something that made me more and more miserable as time went on, so no, I'm not happy I stuck it out."

Best of luck in your future endeavors. Onwards and upwards!

You still have a bachelors degree though right?
yup

Ya, most (older) people tell me I should just finish it but although it's theoretically plausible I'd rather not be miserable

"but you'll get more money"
don't care
"but you're almost done"
not really
"so you're just going to have a wasted year of school?"
yup, but I couldn't have predicted that

I stayed in school because I was interested. I didn't go in just for the money. Now I'm no longer interested and it took me about 6 months to settle on quitting

@Cyrax nope :p
I've got other distractions for now

I wish I could teach/tutor full-time but that's unlikely so I'm going to have to get a normal boring job which is ok. It'll be nice to have a regular schedule unlike in school

It took me about a year to realize that I had no interest in sitting in a classroom for 3+ more years. And the thought of sitting behind a desk for 40 years after that was much worse. While it would be nice to have a degree, I don't regret my decision at all. Good for you for making that tough decision and not just doing what people told you that you should do.

Sorry to hear about your cat. :(

And good for you for sticking with your study. In the end, I've found, it doesn't really matter what you've studied, all they care about is that you got the fancy paper. This is how my sister - who studied garden and landscape technology - is now a senior software tester, or how my ex bf, without a minute of working experience, was offered a job straight out of his study.

I never got the chance to study, and now it's late - I can't get a grant, I don't have the money and with bills to pay I don't have the time. So, Pharpis: finish your study! Yes it's unpleasant now. But a few years of unpleasantness now saves you many unpleasant years later in life.

I would have gladly sat in a dull classroom for +3 years or longer, like everyone else my age, but I was taken out of school to "pay for my sisters study." I recently found out my skint parents made her pay for most of her study herself anyways. And I ended up as a cleaner having to scrape poo off bathroom tiles.
If it hadn't been for my ex bf, I'd still be in that situation. I am eternally grateful to him.

If you have that attitude, how the heck are you going to work any job for 40 years?
But people don't do that anymore. Jobs are used as springboards to get newer, better jobs. Especially since pensions are basically non-existent now. There is very little reason to stay at one job your whole life, unless you love it.

Woahhhhhhh I can log in again! I think I took too much of a break with classes and d2 there...heh. Originally my account was null, basically it didn't exist even though my posts showed me and me having 1 post. Yeah...Well it's fixed yay! I hope you all have been keeping well.

Welcome back! There was some kind of issue when they moved the site to a new server.

I just organized my spare cable collection. Now they're also wrapped up neatly with rubber bands. My ocd is happy!

It is a trend, but most people don't do that. Others attempt to use it as a springboard to making more money. Eventually the people who keep bouncing around will be found out why they are doing that, when their ineffectiveness will be noticed. I speak as an engineer, it probably could be very different for other fields, like IT or programming. We have much better results keeping the people we start with rather than overpaying for the nomads.

Pharphis, you got a she-devil distracting you?

Edit: But then I read

Time for a new job!

I'm still with my gf, yes. We've lived together for 4 years almost. I'm quitting school because I don't like it anymore. She's still in school

Hey, you're sister does exactly what i'm doing now. As for myself, i found that out long time ago too. First job i took had nothing to do with what i did in school. It was under my level, but i had no working experience so i took it. Later i went to my current job and that also had nothing to do with my studies. So yeah, that study was a waste indeed. Except for maybe some paper fetishist who otherwise wouldn't have hired me.

50% in two years? Oh wow, then i'm underpayed by about 175%!! I should really go talk to my manager. :D

Does zaphod still frequent the bar?
I think I found a post from his; the context was somewhat amusing. It was on 9gag, so that gives some idea.

Welp, spoke to my supervisors and I'm probably staying in school.

To super briefly summarize:

them: so you don't want to stay and finish?

me: No, I have no interest and therefore no motivation

them: well what about if your project and thesis instead involved ___ (a side project I started with some high school students because I like teaching and the opportunity arose)

me: maybe (I suggested this exact same thing 4 months ago which they originally said "no" too - apparently you can't just "change projects halfway through or when you lose interest" or whatever)

Well, I guess my supervisors being desperate enough to not have a drop out under them have taken my idea seriously. They probably don't even remember it was my idea. Anyway, I'll be doing more of a chem education type master's if I stick around which is much better suited to my current and future interests.

So you're saying you started the educational slant of your studies by teaching your supervisors a thing or two? Winphis confirmed. (Good luck and congrats!)

Congrats! Mostly on the having a girlfriend (diablo forums and heavily educated in the sciences? don't really need a third strike).

Sorry I can't troll you on hamachi anymore, probably more appropriate there. Pyro just stood me up on our date so I am sad :(

Interesting. I'll stay where I am for probably atleast another two years, they are paying for me to get a diploma so I want to pay them back, but after that we'll see what opportunities there are.
