Extreme time travel - Anyone have expirience with it?

I remember vaguely Diablo II, completely unpatched before LoD... Gambling was a reliable way of getting uniques and sets, boots with strength and better FHR bonuses, -x to monster defense per hit affix, and most droolably; gold find up to 120% on boots, belts and amulets...

Anyone have expirience with the pre-LoD patches? What to look for for use in later patches?
 
I've played a bit of 1.06.

Fun stuff I remember: no timer in spells.

Nice gear: rares can get magic only affixes and these affixes have higher values. Gambling is the best way to get rares. It's also "easy" to gamble SoJs.

Still hoping for 30frw 20fhr 49lr 49fr 19str 19dex boots, or something like that ^^
 
Not sure which classic patch(es) it can happen in, but rare amulets can get BOTH +1 and +2 class skills on them and they will stack (I personally have a +3 Necro ammy)...I also recall (possibly incorrectly) that rare ammys could get 20FCR in at least one classic patch...if so, it *might* be that you could get both 10 and 20fcr affixes as well!!

*contemplates the possibility of +3sorc/30fcr ammy*

Ragnarok's guide to 1.06b has a lot of good info (some of the later posts in that thread as well). I've played quite a bit of 1.06b, so I might be able to answer specific questions beyond that guide. IIRC there recently was a thread about 1.06b builds in the Classic subforum as well.
If you want to go for maximum cheesiness, 1.00 is probably the patch to go for. zrk posted a lot about it in this thread.
 
1.08 on the realms was the best. The class-specific crafting and Deadly recipes were godlike... so cool and unique.
 
Well, the 1.08 deadly recipes are still available in SP...but the class-specific crafts are not, which makes me want to weep, honestly...those saddest of words: it *might* have been...

So, item-wise, nothing changed until LoD? As in powerful items meant for the distant past, but which can be obtained by time travel? Gambling odds changed from 1.00 to 1.06b? I just want 120% goldfind 20FHR 30frw boots ;)
 
My only real time-travel experience is with 1.09 and 1.10a, so I can't speak from experience with the pre-LoD patches, but I have heard that you can gamble SoJs by having the other 2 unique rings in your inventory so the game always produces a SoJ when a unique ring pops. I've also heard of some of those nice affixes spawning on rares in the classic patches.

I believe zrk was Bone Wall farming in 1.00 - apparently that was an early bug.
 
Going from 1.00 to 1.11 certainly gave some interesting results ;)
Massive gold find boots gloves and belts got changed to resistances, and the unique gnarled staff went from Sorceress skills to Paladin.
 
Nope. I'm pretty sure it went to paladin. Damn it, now I'm going to have to try and get a fresh install going to see if I can replicate it

Afaik, the items are identical in 1.00-1.06b. Gambling odds (see Ragnarok's guide) should be the same as well. There are just some bases (Lances, possibly more) that can't drop in 1.00.
I have found and gambled boots with 30frw, 20fhr and 119%gf (n-1 bug) myself (not all on the same boots yet, unfortunately). There were similar boots from 1.00 posted in the IFT as well (by Pyro, iirc).

Transferring items from pre-LoD Classic directly will completely mess up the stats. You need to open up the mule in 1.07 first. Then the stats will stay unchanged.
