1.04 Static/Orb/ES Sorc and Duriel.

Hi all. The search got no results for "1.04" although I'm sure it's probably been discussed in here a bit.

My sorceress is a fairly lowly lvl 40 at the moment. I'm amazed at how much slower levelling is in this patch than the later patches. The game seems all around far more difficult, except that hell is possible for such a sorc (there are no immunes -- and no delay timers on orb, so you can cast frozen orbs incredibly fast).

With Orb, level 11 static and some good teleporting I've gotten through NM and act 1 hell a lot faster than expected, but am now completely stuck at Duriel in hell.

In normal he was troublesome and I ended up needing a staff with +2 Blaze and ran laps around his confines, feet afire and the occasional static field shocking him down. I'm sure NM Duriel would caused me trouble but a friend played with me with his summoner that day.

I'd like to do hell solo. The instant I enter the chamber though, he charges me and kills me instantly everytime. I'm wearing a very nice 30/20 rare bone shield, but haven't managed to block the charge once in many attempts (dex doesn't affect block for those unaware of classic). It seems down right impossible.

Does anyone have any experience of playing these early patches with any class other than a hardy barbarian and getting passed these points in the game?

I have no experience with early patches, as I was mearly 14 when I played those

Have a couple suggestions? Although, I'm sure you've tried them all:

Try teleporting around when you enter? From what you said though, he automatically hits you once you enter, so no go there.
Maybe hiring a merc just to hopefully take the hit for you?
Leveling up a bit?
Just spamming static/fo? Take the hit like a man, Man!

It seems like if your merc can move for a frame as you enter then he just might be targeted for the hit. That's all I can think of, unless you can teleport faster with different gear?

I've heard that your character is actually in the chamber before the screen is finished loading. So you can click your mouse and your character should act on those clicks. Spamming teleport seems like the best option there.

The charge from Duriel is really vicious in those versions. You also don't have many stat points to play around with at level 40. Too make matters worse you can't buy mana pots and they don't drop a lot on /p1 (no /players command), so putting a few (or a lot) of stats into Energy is not a terrible idea.
My 1.06b Sorc finished Hell at level 41 with ~230 life, low block and deeply negative resists. :)

On topic: Try to cast a TP (via hotkey) immediately when you enter the chamber. Then teleport away, try to get off a few statics or orbs and then die to a charge. Reenter through the portal, cast a new portal, try to teleport away, static/orb, die. Repeat until Duriel is dead.
I can't remember if I had problems when first entering the chamber. It should be possible to do at least one thing (cast a TP or teleport). Good luck!

edit: Duriel can be chilled (just checked in 1.06b, so it should work in 1.04), so you should always cast at least one FO before starting to Static him down.

Aye, I got it thanks guys. Combination of all the advice really - the orb+tele spam before the screen actually loaded seems such an instinctive and obvious thing now but apparently I wasn't doing it before. Went through 2 more lives and 4 mercs to keep on taking that heroic one shot for me, but eventually got him down.

I indeed have some points to energy. I got a bowazon up to level 29 in this patch and had as many points as possible into vit and everything still killed me in 2 shots np. I think with a sorc a point or two into energy shield with hard points into energy is definitely worth it in this patch. I don't need any points into dex as I mentioned, which is nice.

I didn't have any troubles with Duriel in 1.00. It might have been because I had a sigon's shield, but I don't remember experiencing any lag either. Maybe you should try the D2 Glide wrapper, it might reduce the loading lag.

I think you misinterpreted my post. The question mark wasn't intended to turn it into a "OLO!1!!11!1 More pts in vita N00blet!" type comment. It was meant to indicate that I was unsure of my suggestion (precisely because I'm not familiar with the patch, and as you have indicated, that Duriel had a brutal charge pre-LoD), but it's what first came to mind since he didn't specify how much life his sorc had, plus the fact that he was getting one hit killed by a NM monster.

TL;DR I wasn't trying to be snarky, sorry if it read that way.

Levelling 20-30 was far far harder in this patch than it is nowadays in 1.13c or whatever. Slow tedious stuff, especially using mostly lvl 1 skills (with no respecs or synergies).

Hell was easier in general with a sorc than it would be nowadays even with all your ridiculously overpowered runewords and all that stuff. No immunes and static is ridiculously good, being able to get monsters to a sliver of their life.

Hell Duriel and hell trav were the only really hard spots that I had to do. Act 3 was mostly teleported through, hardly fighting anything until the high council. They killed me a few times when I tried to go at them in a reasonably face-on manner. Eventually spent a long time clearing all of trav of everything else except them and then managed to pull them out one at a time. Their random self-healing was very annoying. Fire enchanted guy killed me with his explo-death, but that was about it. The random whisps of "evil force" that hit you from the ground gave me more trouble than the boss himself. They almost one shot me, so I couldn't stand still for more than ~1s in the fight or when picking up his drop.

Any lightning enhanced + multiple shot monster = insta death. I had 62 lightning resist when in hell CS and if I touched this one venom lord it was game over. Add in fanat or conviction or something to these champions and it just gets silly trying to kill them. Playing through HC would be incredibly hard imo.

I'm going to level up and get better gear till I can do hell meph and cs runs more consistently, get some super trophy rares and then build up a twinked, beautiful lance-swinging barb on the side with all the goodies I find.

Rares seem a lot rarer in this patch and monsters of any kind only ever drop 2 items max, so if Diablo feels like dropping a magical broad sword that day, your chance of getting a rare lance from that kill is pretty low. Could take a while, but it's a long-term project.

You know anything about racking/chest popping in that patch? May try that as I'm pretty sure Mf was broke in .07/.09, so I'd imagine out would be the same, at least close, on .04

I really have no idea about anything. Was going to ask others if they know where I should be lvling/mfing at x lvl.

What do you mean about mf being broken? My sorc has sacrificed survivability a fair bit to wear mf items (goldwrap, magical gloves and boots, both rare rings, a crappy magical ammy) and hasn't really found much in the way of good items other than a chunk of set items (crap as there are no partial set bonuses), very few unique items (awesome because they have no lvl req -- lvl 1 char with 2x sojs, blinkbats, goldwrap, tarn, eyeless or something etc is pretty cool) and hardly any interesting rares (what its ALL ABOUT in classic).

Are you suggesting my mf may not be working at all?

iirc mf for bosses (to drop uniques) in .07 is broke (doesn't work correctly) until around 556%mf or some crazy crap like that. Hopefully, some of the timetravelers will pop in and correct me if I'm wrong on this. This is the reason 'you' run racks in .07, as racks will drop anything (except for a couple of choice items) including uniques.

I'm not sure if mf is broke in previous patches, but finding a soj for lvl 1 characters, may be enough to sway me to pre .06

http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Magic_Find makes it sound like it's pretty broken. And mf isn't even checked when doing racks? I don't know what it means when it says it doesn't work with spell kills - if that includes a skill like frozen orb then I really need to change my gear up and get rid of useless mf items.
