I don't think the tourney is too hard, just a little slow to play. Its fun lies in having (almost) no control over your character growth, after all. =p

That aside, I would've re-entered, but I rolled Sorceress with A3 Fire mage, so I would basically be replaying randint again, and decided not to. xD

damn it. it was all very easy sailing. arcane sanctuary at p8, and the canyon as well (even p8 crushers and scarabs were no problem with 500 life and massive feral rage leech)

i realised i wasnt getting any experience anymore (level 26) so I figured i may as well finish the act and move on, so i would drop to p1 and just do the true tomb. then i could come back and clean the false tombs if i really wanted later on

but at the door thought, oh, a bit more p8 wont hurt

inside got mobbed by skeletons and ghosts, with 4 mummies. this will be fun, thinks I. 10 seconds in i realise my error, which in my defense is because i havent played melee in a long (long) time. no leech. on a feral rage wolf. who is dependant on leech. with no meat shields. dang

so thats only the first few mistakes, which were all survivable. then, to cap it off, instead of doing the sensible thing and exiting the area and coming back when better prepared (at a lower p-setting) i decided the manly way to survive would be to run INTO the tomb. killed the mummies, but the stacked 12 or so ghosts were really hurting, and there were sooooo many skellies i couldnt move much. so ... in deeper right? RIGHT?

training a massive group behind, i hit a t-junction. left or up? i didnt have a dice handy (sorry random gods ... this is probably why i died!) but chose up. and through the doorway bang .. surrounded by skeletons and mummies. and my back exit was now closed. a quick pause revealed maybe 40 or 50 enemies, low health, no summons, no merc, few potions, no chance

bye bye lupus

in the end i didnt even give him an honorable death, just a S+E

roll ... another druid (good, favourite class), and ... rogue merc! this will be a cakewalk. if i get summons this time. please. and no more SS, unless its as a shockbear

hmm, a name? i might name him after my old favourite hardcore tri-elemental druid, Stormy. that might make me keep him alive

But you convinced me to roll up a character myself - even if progress will be very slow at best. So what did the dice hold for me?

I present to you:
[highlight]Barbapapa, the Paladin with a Barbarian fellow[/highlight], Level 1, Rogue Encampment, reminding me of my "What the stars hold for you" character, who is still in Act II Normal and was built to almost the same rules...

P.S.: Actually, I chose the name based on the comic figure before I rolled the mercenary ... how fitting was the "4" I rolled :D

honestly i was pretty pissed about the deeds, itd been easy going and there was no need for it. and it was a good opportunity to try a melee build, albeit a 'non-build' by its nature

anyway, stormy is going well. back into far more familiar territory, currently running as a huntermental summoner. skill placement has been devine, although he still has far too much energy

actually, speaking of placements, i probably should explain my system. im currently playing on an internet free computer (cos my main gaming machine runs vista and diablo hates vista), thus random dot org use would require 2 computers on, regular trips upstairs ... essentially not gonna happen

so in the middle of the night while my GF was asleep and i felt like starting stormy off i was frantically searching around for randomness. no dice, literally. i started with a thick book and random page opening, but rapidly worked out this wasnt random in any real way. so i pulled out a chopstick, you know the plastic kind with embossed dragons on one side. essentially i divide each decision into four or less parts (easy for stats, skills need multiple spins) and spin the stick on its tip. the side that ends face up denotes the placement

so stormy is 'chopstick random'

anyway, he has managed to unlock the summoning tree with all pre-reqs for direwolves, and avoided vines. also only hitting the fire elemental tree. no SS at all yet. truly fantastic, its pretty much my favourite build thus far (ravens, wolves, bowling and bows)

stats is a bit less perfect. high dex is fine for a hunter, but energy has still sucked up most points

no problems yet. 2 spirit wolves make awesome meat shields, and having a rogue merc (fire unfortunately if i get more elemental points) is a huge change from lupus. and a one point MB with 3 FS synergy points kills well even on p8

will do a proper update at act end. no good finds yet, although i think maybe 12 of my 16 gems are emeralds, which is bizarre

other bizarre thing was a totally empty level 4 of the countess' tower

ps. to jianz, regarding the rules, as always the one thing that feels restrictive here is single pass. you could achieve roughly the same thing with a rule like 'no running act bosses or super-uniques'. the reason i say that is the way it is now slows things down. i would prefer to run past areas that bore me (ie all of act 1, most of act 2) and then level where it is quick (ie canyon of magi)

i dont think it would unbalance things too far, MF isnt really gonna be that affected. and doing full p8 clears means you are largely hitting XP cap in every area anyway, so its not gonna overlevel people

just a thought, it may have been tried before and not work

dlav, the table is just too big to post all the time, it fills up the pages too much

so as promised, an end act 1 update. stormy is becoming a random 'build' if that is at all possible

saved up 7 or 8 skill points for level 18 (dire wolves) after I had unlocked it with a point in OS. hit level 18 somewhere in the cats, and returned to town for a level up spree

the outcome was no points in dire wolves unfortuately, but my army had expanded to 4 spirit wolves, 3 ravens and the all important points in fissure. good enough for now. still total avoidance of the SS tree (which thankfully gets less and less likely each level break (2/13 chance now)

as id already hit 18 i didnt feel the need to do full clears in cats, although finding stairways meant near full clears anyway. im not sure but i think i hit 19 after several vampire champion packs

andy was taken at p8. i figured a recastable solid army plus fire magic plus fire rogue was probably the best start a character could have against andy. and it was, blaise didnt even die. and andy shattered nicely on death

(sorry for lack of screenies, no internet on diablo comp as above)

no good drops at all. i didnt find a single s/u for the whole act, despite clearing all the caves and most of the cats. did find 6 chipped topazes, so blinged up MF

gambled some lovely rare boosts with 22MF, dual resists and 76% GF (total GF now 140)

also upgraded bows at the end of the act, merc has a mechanics short battle bow with some chips, and stormy is using a screaming SBB of amp damage, which isnt going off at all. the 12% flee is working though

again, sorry for no readouts, but stats

After a couple years break from D2, I popped in here, read this, and decided to make a randomly challenged paladin with an act I merc (I let Kashya pick the element - ice!)

Due to my hiatus from D2 I actually forgot about the den of evil until after I'd gotten my rouge! After a disturbing trend of 7 energy points and 2 skill points in prayer, the stats randomized and almost every single skill point went into might, so the Den was a breeze.

Due to colorblindness mixed with wine, I was absolutely shocked to ID Felloak from Blood Raven (that's not a normal club!!) It may come in handy for LE bosses, but for now it's in the stash while I bang with a +1 might scepter.

I managed to flesh out my character a bit more. At first most of my points went in to might, which I was grateful for. However around the Dark Wood I started to whiff pretty consistently. A few skills made for pleasant surprises. Sacrifice gets rid of my AR problem, and if a potion is drank as you swing, the life loss isn't nearly as dangerous as I thought it would be. My life is so low due to my impressive energy pool :unimpressed:that I didn't lose much health anyway.

Holy Bolt was another pleasant surprise. P8 Bone Ash was absolutely annihilated by this spell, and I continued to use it on various undead nasties like Wraith bosses and Vampires. I suspect it will be very handy in Act II.

The nice thing about my auras is I have a solution for everything. Might lets my rogue, Abhaya, kill baddies from a distance. Resist lightning gets me past LE bosses and other boss afflicted, etc. Defiance lets me tank physicals.

I bought a scepter with +1 Holy Fire and +1 Zeal in preparation for Andariel. She was a pushover at P8. HF packs a real punch! And zeal can be used nonstop due to excessive points in energy.

When I got to Act II I immediately ran to the cube, killing minimally on the way because my stash was overflowing with gems. Mostly diamonds and emeralds, 20 of those and only 2 topazes. :(

I ran to the Far Oasis waypoint, but have yet to kill most anything in the desert, and I need to do Radament.

Yes, that is standard behaviour of a Super Chest on high players settings. BTW, they can drop a whole lot more stuff than that. I think 44 drops is the maximum (48 if it´s locked) but such a drop will look even more than that because the gold drops will be separated into more piles.

Also, 5% of the time, a Super Chest will drop many rare items.

The nice thing about my auras is I have a solution for everything.
Playing a Paladin myself, I know exactly how you feel. I like to call mine "jack of all trades, but master of none". But let's start at the beginning...

I fought through the Blood Moor without any problems, and the first goodies didn't make me wait. But Flavie insisted that I shouldn't go that way, but turn back - there were apparently still monsters to be slain. I got Holy Fire, my favourite early game aura for Paladins, at level 7 (after points in Sacrifice, Prayer, Might, Smite, Prayer again and Resist Cold). It made the fight against Blood Raven easier, but still I had to chase her around for minutes before I could finally deliver the killing blow.

This item is one of at least 3 failed Set/Uniques...it is really annoying how much S/Us one could find if monsters had a mlvl a bit higher ... I was quite surprised to see Arctic Furs drop from a loose boulder in the Stony Fields though, and it might come in handy in later game (after I ditched MF gear...). A good roll even!

Turned out I had an arch enemy - Misshapen/Tainteds. Here is the first boss pack of many to come. Well, here was :p Gleglaw's Claw seems to be an item I find with every tourney character ... sometimes even twice.

In the cloister I was quite surprised to spot Reinhold Messner's Yeti! A whole boss pack of them! Now wonder nobody ever saw him again, if Reinhold did the same with him I did - kill him for l00t!

Upon reaching clvl 18, I burned through all 7 spare skill points in order to get Holy Freeze, but alas! to no avail. Instead, I got skill points in Sacrifice, Concentration, Smite, Smite again, Resist Lightning and Vengeance.

Ah, one of my favourite mods on bosses...I encountered at least 5 boss packs from the Barracks on, and I had to constantly use Resist Lightning against them. Even then, life was quite dangerous against LEs ... (this picture was taken after a flight to town from a LE boss. I accidentally hit the wrong Hotkey and switched from Resist Lightning to Holy Fire instead from Smite to Zeal...). So yep, my first NDE in Act 1 Normal ...

I could take on the Smith in melee without problems, but this guy and his team were nasty and I had to use the doorway to fight them off. Nasty was also this guy (remember what I told you about arch-enemies ... and more of them). I didn't make screenshots of all boss packs, but I encountered 5 (!!!) boss packs (3 of them Tainteds) on level 1 of the catacombs! I can't remember there were that many bosses before, but well - I can't complain: they gave me over a whole level's XP after all :)

More tainted boss packs at level 2 and level 3 of the catacombs. This Banished Boss made me use up 6 Healing Potions despite having Resist Fire active all the time, and his Lightning Bolts hurt - one took 1/3 of my life, so Resist Lightning time it was again and I positioned myself in a way, where the bolts wouldn't hit me (see picture).

Finally I faced Andariel, and with the usual Antidote prophylaxis I only needed 3 Healing Potions to battle her to death. No normal sized Topaz for me though :(

Well, I'm in Act III. I was planning on doing a write up of my adventures in Act II, but I think this screen shot sums it up.

An untwinked, HC, melee with no control over my skills or stats seems like a bad idea, so I will be on the look out for a bow I think.

My points since last write up went into Thorns, Concentration, Charge, and Holy Bolt (which does some surprisingly nice damage now, more than anything else I've got). I can't get a point in Holy Freeze or Zeal to save my life (literally). Dex would be nice as well. As would a topaz, which apparently don't exist in my world. :scratchchin:

I took on Duriel at P3; he dropped Nightsmoke.

This is the first character I´ve played that flat-out OWNED the seven tombs on /players 3. There are only short moments when I need to watch out so that Drus is not taking too much of a beating. Those times, I can either retreat just a little (Drus tends to follow Pete more than the golem and the Revives do, and a short retreat will often make the monsters go for these 'less crucial' tanks instead). Sometimes a Life Tap or a Terror is in order to help Drus out as well. Dim Vision is used a lot, especially early in an area, or if there are strong ranged attackers or resurrectors around.

Most of the tactical decisions Pete needs to make is whether he should use Revive or Corpse Explosion on the corpses that form. If I am low on Revives, or if Drus is somewhat in trouble and a new tank in that position would be great, I´ll use Revive, otherwise I´ll use CE. I typically Amp the pack before casting CE (or I tag them with Lower Resist before CE if there are PI monsters in there).

Of the Tomb monsters, Gorebellies are the best Revives (but too may of them and Drus can have trouble reaching opponents because of the bulk of these guys). Mummies and Apparitions are also great. Beetles will do in a pinch, but I think they are annoying and their sounds make me feel uneasy since I am so used to these sounds meaning trouble if I don´t watch out. :p
Vampires and Unravelers make bad Revives since they are not keen on tanking and following monsters. They make good bombs, though, especially the Unravelers.

A ridiculous number of Gorebelly and Unraveler bosses in the tombs - more than I´ve ever seen. I think that´s the main reason Pete reached a higher level than what I am used to at this stage (my previous '/p3 in Hell' characters ended this act at clvl 83).

I happened to have a bunch of Revived mummies when I found the entrance to Duriel´s lair, so I took him on right there, leaving more than half of the true tomb to clean up later. The ctc Static from Drus´sword made the upper half of Duriel´s life vanish quickly, but the rest of the fight dragged on longer. I tried to keep Drus safe with golem recasts. It worked out well, and he survived. This seemed to be the fastest way to do damage to Duriel near the end.

Being on the phone + being tired from work = deeds :(

I was on the phone with my brother and tried to make some progress in the Tombs in Act II (Normal ... :rolleyes:), when I encountered a Boss Greater Mummy. I didn't look at the mods, suddenly I was hit by 3 bolts and my life bulb was almost to zero. I still could have survived, if I hadn't pressed the wrong key...4 instead of 3, which gave a nifty boost to my mana, but no instant full health bulb like I intended...

Things looked well so far: Last level I got Sanctuary and the level before Holy Freeze, as well as Conversion and Charge, but I doubt that the character would have been strong later on - skill points were too widespread, but still - it was fun :) Maybe I'll start another character later - for now I'll try to Guardian my Obsession sept.

I have made some progress with Moonchild!

I decided I would stop worrying about merc MF and just equip her to kill. I checked my stash. 0 Ith runes. 0 +damage runes for a Breast Plate. How discouraging. Fortunately, I did have a circlet with 1-91 lightning damage, so I slapped that on Aliza and went to work.

Every single tomb, except for Duriel's, was filled with beetles. They were a great annoyance, but I still cleared them all without any NDEs. I equipped myself with lots of life leech and used Tiger Strike to take Duriel down at /p3. There are no good items finds to report. Worse yet, there are no good skill assignments to report! Here are Moonchild's skills:

I don't see how I can get much further without CoS, Mind Blast, and Blade Fury. :( I'm counting on those. Basically, I have 10 skills that would be "wasted" and 12 that would be useful, and I've had 4 skills in a row wasted. Blergh! There's about a 4% chance of that happening. Sorry for being so negative, but I'm not getting any of the skills that my assassin needs to progress! Not even getting useful stuff like Claw Block/Mastery...

At least you have BoS, TS/Tail and DF.

Are you using MA skills with a claw, or are you using a 'Steel' Flail, javelins or a bow at the moment?

Hang in there and help Aliza as much as you can. I think the real crunch time for you will be Act IV. If you can get through that, the quick levelling in Act V will probably give you some key skills. Also, Hand Scythes are qlvl 41, btw. That´s good to know in that act. I know it was for my assassin in the Skill-less tourney...
