How to use my runes... ?

So, i got a little wealth ( namely 3x Gul ) from rushing some chars to the Hellforge. I am sure that i want to build a big bad melee char. No magic whatsoever, a totaly item dependend build which will reach astronomical damage and killing speed just because of his crazy gear. I am quite inspired by sir's zealot here : http://www.purediablo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=722391

Now the problem is this : I cubed up two gul's, so now i am sitting at vex - gul. Which would give me the very nice death runeword. This would be the ultimate weapon for this zealot. I even have the base weapon sitting in my inventory, and the runes beside it.

Then i though : i am not that far away from making a cta. Well, still quite a way, namely mal - ist - gul. But if i make that death sword now, i have no rune higher than Fal left.

I guess i am asking : How much do i need this cta ? I think it is quite versatile, i can mule it from char to char when i play them, EVERYONE can use the BO. The sword on the other hand will be awesome, but i yet have to level up the paladin who will eventualy put out the hurting with it, and once he has the level, he will be the only one ever to wield it.

As i write this, my mind is pretty much made up. I will rush for the CtA first and then rush some more for the death. Any opinions on that ? :)

Re: How to use my runes... ?

Whether or not to make CtA is probably the 2nd most debated HR topic behind Grief or Fort.

I personally have one, and I do mule it between all my characters as needed, even for questing. Except for a shifter druid, I think it's the best option on switch (have to un-shift to recast w/ the druid). However, its usefulness is limited on many builds. Depending on your roll, you may have to recast ever couple minutes. +all skills will help this, so sorceress' and other casters get the greatest benefit while with pure melee builds it can get tedious to recast all the time. Builds with low life (glass cannons) get even less benefit from it.

The decision is yours, obviously. If you do rush for it and get a good roll, you very likely won't regret it. However, it doesn't make or break any build, it's purely a nice-to-have item and will make you constantly have to debate what to carry on switch (Demon Limb or CTA? LR wand or CTA? Immune solution or CTA?)

Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck with your roll.

Re: How to use my runes... ?

It's one of those rare runewords from which most builds benefit greatly. Can't go wrong with that one. Death is great, but not universal as CtA.

I think my biggest problem when I finally make it is gonna be swapping it to whichever char I'm playing at that moment.

Re: How to use my runes... ?

I thought sorcs, while having the longest duration, would get the least benefit in terms of actually adding life. Some sort of high-life melee character that isn't a barbarian would benefit greatly from a CtA *cough* fireclaws-bear *cough*

Don't forget a good Death base will cost you a penny or two. So CtA is probably cheaper and more versatile.

My thoughts exactly.

Thanks alot :) Will need it.

I rushed 5 chars to the hellforge and got 3x gul, 1x pul, 1x fal ( lucky me ^^ ). I traded 2 pul's for a 1.07 colossus blade with Fabian. With the 3 gul's gone too, i am broke again till my next chars hit the hellforge ^^

Actualy, the question is only which one to make first. I made up my mind that i will keep HF rushing till i have both. I will go for the CtA first, because :

- the char who will wear the death is not leveled up yet
- It takes longer to rush for the cta, so i will do it first
- the cta will help me while playing the paladin and while playing my sorc for rushing

Ask me again after the next time you blind teleport into some fanatic frenzytaurs or convicted gloams.

Don't blind teleport like crazy? I've done thousands of Baal runs with my 90% FCR MeteOrb, and have seen conviction gloams often enough, but never felt that a CtA would make any difference.

The thing with CtA, I guess, is that you don't really miss it if you don't have it, but once you do have it you can't live without it :)

You may be right here.

But seriously, if you've done thousands of Baal runs, you should know the FCR breakpoints. As well as the fact that being able to take 2-3 more lightnings can save you.

There's also one good thing about a big life-pool, which I consider much more important then tanking abilities, is that you don't go into hit recovery as easily, since you have to lose a set % of your life pool for recovery to take place. Especially important against Hell witch bosses with nasty mods.

That right there is the number one reason I don't have a strong desire to make a CtA. ;)

Re: How to use my runes... ?

I've never made CtA but instead I when I need a huge mana/life boost I use a flesh-and-blood BO barb and self-multiplay. It's cheaper rune-wise (almost none, versus a big investment!) and you don't essentially lose your switch weapon options but the downside is not having static maps anymore. One plus is that I can use a very high-level BO (level 50) as well and it lasts a long time. If you want a huge melee weapon, and it sounds like you do, Death is apparently pretty amazing.

I do, actually, but have never bothered to change her equipment to reflect that knowledge; she works fine, so why change? ;)

Well, surely for more effective runs.. 15% more fcr shouldn't be hard to find somewhere.
