Etdlahq Memorial Bar - your shelter from forum crashes

Mmmmm. . . cookies. . .

Ok. I'm about to head off for Bridge with the oldies. Good times. I have 8 LongHammers in a cooler with some ice (everyone there drinks Coors/Miller/Bud Light: yuck), and am leaving myself 2 Stone IPAs and 2 Arrogant Bastards for the return home. GOOD TIMES!

I'll be back later to spam the bar while watching JCVD (the new-ish French/English film from Van Dame the aging action star: supposed to be friggen awesome and the best film of his career (which isn't saying much).

So Cheers, bar! :guiness:

According to the international office, my visa restrictions will prevent me from accepting the 3-month internships that I applied for, even if I'm offered a position. I considered going through with the interviews with no pressure, but decided to decline them out of respect for the employers and the other applicants. I'm disappointed, but also relieved.

I did my first very serious exercise bike ride yesterday, a solid 15 miles of hilly terrain in about 54 minutes. My legs feel okay today, but I'll probably give it another day before riding again, as I don't want to aggravate my knee. I'm fairly sure Pancake would whip my butt if we rode together, but all in all I'm pleased with how I rode.

I've been having some knee pain lately as well. It's definitely related to the riding, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. It might just be that between the training rides I was doing before the race, warming up before the stages, and the race itself I have put a lot of stress on my knees. Strangely, though, it's only my right knee that bugs me. Hm.

And I would so totally beat you

That, and my man Alberto Contador obliterated the competition today and won the stage and the yellow jersey.
Pssssh. If Levi was still in it you would have seen some real racing. :jig:

@essojay: I'm sorry to hear that. I'm not sure I understand fully after a bottle and a half of wine, but... get a better Visa? That's not helping, I know...

@JayGun: JCVD is a **** goddamn awesome film. Not the best of his career but damn awesome and SO different to what you were expecting. His top five films are Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Timecop, Hard Target and Sudden Death. Universal Soldier gets an honourable mention and Until Death was a *really* good film. Also, I'm a bit of a JCVD fanboy. <cough> 16GB torrent <cough>

This evening I watched the last few episodes of Third Rock From The Sun (and shed a tear at the last episode), the pilot of 8 Simple Rules (and also shed a tear) and the Chinese civil war film 'Assembly', which I would recommend to anyone.

I still need to watch Mongol.

Lalala...

EDIT: Did you say cookies?

Well, I promised some :spam: upon my return from Bridge with the oldies, so:

JEEZ. My stepdad can be a total jackass/jerk/****tard (says the pot to the kettle). I had a decent time, pounded a bit of beer, made a bit of a goodnatured donkey of myself, and then on the way home (in response to a question regarding where to send stuff we planned to send step brother who was in the army in Afghanistan but is now on his way back,) told me to "Stuff It."

I said, "That sounds like a good idea!" And then decided to keep my mouth shut . . .

. . . for the rest of the month.

Good thing there's the EMB, huh. I can speak volumes without ever having to open my mouth! :D

So. I'll have a LongHammer or two before jumping on some Arrogant Bastards. If I have to stay with one (and since I am one) I guess I better drink 'em up!

tl;dr: GOOD TIMES!

@JayGun: That sure was a tasty can of spam!

Green tea please. Lots to do, busy day in my head.

Had a virus attack last night. I have a slight feeling it came from the forums, as this was the only window open, and it shut down my computer. There were also reports of infections coming from the ads on Diii.net [recently].
Scanned using various programs, and found 4! trojans... Thanks technology[...] I'll be around for a while I think. Was busy at work today, but quite enjoyable. Nice to be at home though.
Currently updating scanners and going to do a scan later.

Ohh food finished 10 mins ago. BBL

[Post 2]
Mmmm food! My computer's fine, with no sign of trojans at the moment. :)

Pijus - those long eskrima sticks are very similar to the japanese bokken - wooden training sword. Different style, but effectively the same weapon. I really do have to get back to my bokken training though.

*places whisky, beers and mixed drinks on the bar*
Enjoy your Tuesday to those just starting (and in the middle of) their day! (even though it's Tuesday night here!)

@Drystan and Edward: Do you guys go to martial arts for self defense, or for fitness?

I think I'll start learning a knife fighting system that my teacher teaches on thursdays. He's so inlove with it. I think he's quite high ranked in it too.

Hmm. Honestly, I don't know. I initially did aikido back in year 10 (6+ years ago?,) and then picked it up again 4-5 years ago as more of a hobby. I never thought about it as fitness, as I'm 'reasonably' fit to begin with. Similiarly, I didn't pick it up for self defense, as I've never really gotten myself into any terrible situation where I've needed it.

So, it's probably more as a hobby, something that I enjoy - rather than either fitness or defense - that helps fitness and defense if I ever do find myself in a situation.

How did you get into eskrima?

I played Star Wars Jedi Knight 3 Jedi Academy way too much. Really really way too much. Then I saw Human weapon, and that other martial arts series. Some time later I googled eskrima, and found a single school in my city(and probably the whole country). I started doing it for fitness at first, but with a system like Eskrima, you can't help but get into the self defense aspect of it.

Wow that was long.

My teacher doesn't believe that aikido can be effectively used for self defense, and since I'm his student, I'm picking it up too...

I started doing aikido after [a very bad thing happened] and it was just to get me out of the house. I was sad there wasn't much of a cardio angle to it (so I joined a gym as well) but the pure technicality of it appealed to me, and I kept going back until I mastered this one move, and when I managed to get it right twice in a row (and in no way master it), they showed me something else which I loved.

I hope I have the common sense not to get in a fight, but you never know in Newquay, especially over the summer, with stories like this and this, let alone the people that are actually old enough to drink, and the havoc they cause.

Say no more - I can imagine most of the rest. ;)

Ahh, a great example of the all too common 'martial art' superiority... I'm sorry, but if that is indeed your teachers belief without practicing it for over 10+ years... I can't finish that sentence politely.
I have no right to claim the effectiveness of any other martial art, especially since I have not 'mastered' any - and there are too few that teach this respect. For your teacher to claim a martial art is ineffective, especially if he hasn't practiced it for 10+ years, it says a lot. It goes towards the 'imagined' competitive nature of most martial arts.
To be honest, it's almost equivalent to me saying that your techniques have no use whatsoever. True? Hardly... But for a teacher of any art to say something like that encourages the random flame wars and beliefs that "x martial art is better than y martial art" among the students.

However, if he has trained in aikido for 10+ years, and in fact, truely mastered aikido, I withdraw my comments. My question is then, why train for so long in an art that he deems ineffective, while he enjoys eskrima enough to teach it? Surely his time is better spent enjoying and teaching the art of eskrima?
I understand that you have not said this, and this is (probably) not your belief, but I ask that you understand that each 'art' has its own benefit, and unless you train in each of them for long enough to master each, don't claim one is ineffective. Keep an open mind to each possibility, and each time you see a little from each, keep an eye on movements and balance, and learn from them.

I do not intend to be offensive or rude or anything in this post. I just hate people enforcing the belief that 'x martial art' is ineffective, when the person has not actually 'mastered' the art, and hope that you can keep an open mind. Even those who claim to have tried a martial art for "6 months," have no idea what that art is about. Six months, 3 years, is hardly enough time to master any form.

Fast Eddie - very sad to hear things like that. We've had a few stories like that over here too, and it really is a tragic end of a life so young.

Who needs martial arts? I just use traps + mb, then spam GG

Hot dog! We have a weiner!

I'll take a blackberry tea and a 90min man-date with my newly-purchased Steven Seagal DVD.

Wasn't trollish. Just a completely different perspective. As I PM'd, Sparring and Self Defense are completely different.
Sparring is organised and ruled fights with trained competitors.
Self-defense, aikido is if someone attacks you without warning. Drunken bar fight, muggings, assaults.

Aikido is not designed to be used in sparring - organised fights. Many other martial arts involve heavy sparring, thus have taught techniques more in sparring. They're different things.

I was just saying for a teacher to teach this biased, inaccurate description of self defense/martial art is a pain, as it doesn't incorporate other perspectives, such as the traditional "self defense." It teaches people how to fight, not how to defend yourself, and the attacker if you wish, as aikido does.

Essojay - find me if you will! *CoS and runs*

Last night was fun. I managed to sort a few more things around the house, register for online banking (after removing the four trojans from my system), watch Infernal Affairs and read before bed.

Today I'm up early and ready to achieve... something. My girlfriend was up at 5AM to go to her graduation ceremony. So good luck to her.

Black coffee please.

Bump:whistling:

I'm feeling abit under the weather. Could it be because I've spent the whole day MPing? I'll go do a few LK runs, hope to get lucky.

Why isn't anyone posting at the EMB?
