Whats wrong with my game?!

Problem:
I have recently been playing starcraft and felt like logging back onto diablo 2 to play on my old characters again. It had only been a couple of weeks since I hadn't logged on. But while logging on I encountered some errors. First, the loading process (connecting to the fastest server... and all that junk) took longer than usual. Second, if the loading ever finished (sometimes it kept loading and never continued at connecting to the fastest server and checking versions) I got another error saying that I had connection issues and/or had to open ports. However, a couple of weeks ago I was enjoying the game problem free, which rules out ports, my connection is fine and I can get onto starcraft with mild turbulence. Is it my computer, or b.net. Help please!

Computer Specs:
E4600 C2D intel CPU
x1900 ATI Graphics card (with omega drivers)
320gb hd about 70% filled
3gb ddr 2 ram

Also, I am playing on fully valid cd keys and no hacks or any sort (any third party programs arent used). Furthermore, i uninstalled Diablo 2 and went online and downloaded diablo 2 and the expansion from my b.net account on their website. After installation it still doesnt work :\

-Aching to play D2!

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

The easiest, surest way to fix it is to reinstall windows. A bit time consuming, but it will almost surely work.

But before you try that, you might try uninstalling SC and D2, then reinstall D2. Also, I seem to remember something about SC changing port settings or something. At least I'm sure that it was a problem with using SC and D2. Use the search function. The link is near the top of the page.

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

Maybe you could use a system restore point to roll back a couple weeks (when D2 was working fine)?

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

OK, reinstall is the last option. There are some things you can, and *should* try.

Firstly - create a new user. Fire up Diablo 2/StarCraft etc and try it - does it work?

Secondly, contact your ISP - perhaps they are doing some packet filtering at their end? I've seen issues with ISPs that use large routers (Redbacks etc) that use natting. I work for an ISP (lvl 2/3 tech, specialising in hosting/exchange/dns) and I've seen this happen before. It's not uncommon imho.

Thirdly, are you running an Internet Security suite (as opposed to AV only) - if so, turn off the Firewall. Turn off Windows Firewall. re-test.

You might also want to flush your DNS - from DOS, run:

ipconfig /flushdns

If your ISP has dynamic IP addresses, then log off/on to get a new IP address. If it's static, ask your ISP to re-assign another IP address to your connection. Shouldn't be hard, depending on the ISP and tech involved.

Hope this helps.

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

Try this out:

1. Take a deep breath
2. Connect to your router to check out the settings
3. Go to Advanced, then port forwarding
4. Select port triggering
5. Uncheck Starcraft and press apply
6. Go to Port forwarding and see if there are any programs that use 6112 port. Delete them if there are.
7. Thank Noodle, and enjoy Diablo II.

The problem is that starcraft uses the same port number as Diablo.

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

Many thanks for the abundant replies to my complication. Unfortunately, the problem still persists and I have no clue as to what is happening. But no worries, I might buy a new hard drive, so hopefully I can reformat my current HD and sort this entire thing out. But if I was able to fix this problem with fellow diablo 2 players ^_^, I would be ever happy :D

-Grateful for the replies

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

Just wanted to note: most online games use port 6112. So that shouldn't be the problem.

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

Well guys. I have lost, despite the guidance I received from you all. Today, on this date of July 14, 2009, I am reformatting my computer. :(

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

I HAVE REFORMATTED AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE!! My provider isnt to blame because my sister can play d2 fine. This makes no sense...

I have been thinking, I have been downloading the game from my battle.net account. Maybe this is a flaw with their system? Im going to uninstall and install with my disks and check the results. Ill be back with input!

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

Using the disks did not fix the problem. However, I have found the cause of the problem and it is now fixed for me :D I found the solution at the blizzard forum section. Thanks for all your input, apparently, connecting straight to the router fixed my problem.

Re: Whats wrong with my game?!

yeah you really have to set them up properly. you can look into getting better firmware for your router too, that might help.
