Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Congrats on getting to NM, jiansonz! That was a good read: your excitement about getting a merc finally was palpable.

Angelic was a lucky find! With +skill, life, and MF boost like that, it wouldn't be bad to take all the way to Guardian.

@Merlin: yes the MVP's are here, but I don't think that should dissuade you. They are simply attracted to the concept and its simplicity: think playing catch. Everyone can have fun playing catch!

I would definitely join this if I didn't have a hard enough time getting some gaming in... I have a Baldur's Gate character that needs finishing!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Congrats on the tournament's first and foremost Destroyer, jiansonz! I will have to wait only one more WP to get my merc and I'm already anxiously awaiting him. Of course, the low level clay golem helps a necro like yours. However, I have a question that may be difficult to answer: your golem probably has very few HP and is likely very fragile against Diablo. When striking the golem, Diablo gets his 10X damage bonus as well, running far over the golem's max HP number. Do you get credit for the full effect of his damage (via Iron Maiden) or only up to the golem's life? I guess it's a seat of the pants type of analysis.

Merlin, come on in, the water's fine!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

@Jian. Awesome work Jian :). I couldn't imagine the feeling of finally being able to get a merc and watching him plow through everything .

@OldSoldier. Very interesting question. I would love to find if that is true or not.

Damit guys reading your updates makes me want to really play Kane but stupid RL prevents me from having any free time at the moment . Ah well at least the Diablo fire is once again burning in my heart :loveblush:. I will get cracking soon!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

@Merlin: don't worry man, I'm in this one. You'll be fine!

@Jian Wow, nice Angelics! That might be my favorite set for tournaments. If you can snag the Ammy, it's realistic to get the whole thing and the bonuses are so strong, even when just wearing parts of it. Also congrats on the Destroyer.

I have a question for you though. I've gotten really lucky with gambles -- at level 12 I got my chance gloves and boots both above 10, and it only took like 5 gambles....so I raked up the money for 17. After about a dozen gambles I received gloves at 21% and boots at 23% with faster hit recovery, stamina regen, and 11 cold resist. So now I'm sitting in the Outer Cloister with ~150,000 gold! Should I gamble Sashes next level, shooting for the wealth suffix? Or just save for circlets at 22?

The Countess dropped Moonchild a lovely leaf! That Small Charm was even a frosty! Best Normal Countess drop I've ever had. (I've gotten Ral's before, but the charm put this over the top)

Moonchild and Aliza have been progressing smoothly, although I only have 5 Topazes working for me. 93% Magic Find in total. Can't wait to see what horrors the skill randomizer has in store for me at level 18! (11 points saved for Fade)

I have to say I LOVE the reading the write-ups and can really get involved when the love of this game shines through so much! I'm still plugging along (Slapdash the Paladin is heading into the false tombs right now,) and look forward to meeting Duriel. O.o

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Yes, I love the write-ups too...keep'em coming, guys! Randall checked in at the Outer Cloister before heading back out to plunder the Pit. The best thing he's picked up so far is Hsarus' Iron Fist buckler. The Countess dropped 3 runes, but they were just 2 Tirs and an El.

@OldSoldier: Yes, I have been wondering about the 'overspill' damage myself*. My golems did survive a 'cold-hand smackage' from full life, so at least those times it led to some good damage to the big lizard.

(* although this must be a really insignificant waste, compared to all the golems that were quickly wasted by elemental attacks)

@ILikeRocks: standard untwinked gear (when he isn´t used for MF) for an Act III merc for me would be something like:
- 'Stealth' armor
- Some sort of Circlet of the Magus (preferrably a rare with other goodies), or a 'Lore' helm
- 'Rhyme' or 'Splendor' shield (or WoE, Lidless Wall or Sigon´s Guard if you´ve been lucky)
- Resist/MF sword, or Culwen´s point if you´re lucky ('Sprit' sword if you have RWM)

Addendum to my last update (short things):

Pete has two points in Poison Nova. I have actually used it once, against Lister (Drus took forever to take him down otherwise - for a monster in Normal, /p8 Lister has insane regeneration!).

Weird item for sale at Anya´s: Glowing Gauntlets of the Sun. +7 to Light Radius!
(sidenote: the 'base value' for light radius is 13 units. There is no improved effect past 18 units, so going beyond +5 is useless, unless you also wear something that makes it darker.)

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Oh heck, lets give it a shot eh? I was lucky enough to roll barbarian, a class I am very familiar with, since I managed to kill about 3K of them in Normal difficulty so far. Yay me!
So who is going to be the trusty companion for my noble barbie? Well, verily, a sorcerous Ken. That is, an Act III lightning iron wolf. Fun times...
His name, gleaned from the random name site Wayne mentioned(i used random org to select the name), shall be Straight Danny (Su is left off). I guess my barbie feels the need to assert his sexual orientation once he teams up with that iron wolf...

Given that, I'll not start immediately. My current D2 project is actually getting a guardian once, untwinked single pass too. So I am working on a Fishyzon, since the amazon was my very first D2 character, she has good ranged attacks, I like throwing weapons a lot, and...

yes...

She is blonde and has boobies.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Calavera embarked on her journey with vengeance in her mind, stoked by the hatred that burned in her breast. Her entire family was slaughtered in the wake of the wanderer's passing, and all life held little meaning without the absolutely driving force of retribution against the evil that killed her five children.

Her first stop was a little practice against a pitiful demon named Coldcrow who had slain untold dozens of weaker rogue sisters. The fear was palpable only for a moment against another deadly foe, Blood Raven. Even this supposed undead master was unable to withstand Calavera's fury for long, especially with a growing knowledge of the claw weapon and a new skill, Tiger Strike.

In the forest Calavera decided to wipe clean from the world the siren that took such pleasure in torturing the innocents, the Countess. It was here that the evildoers on the earth decided to lay their first potent trap: ghosts! Upon entering the palace cellar, Calavera was set upon by a lengthy train of the ethereal souls bent on her destruction. It happened so that two packs entered the fray at the same time. Calavera had to run "around the block" a few times to split the undead into manageable elements. Eight to ten ghosts, might and cold enchanted were her first true test. The carnage left on the floor of the cellar along with Calavera's scars bear witness to what happened there. The ghosts will roam no more. The Countess herself dropped a rune, something Calavera had only heard about before: a Tal.

In the rogue barracks, Calavera fought additional legions of undead creatures, coming to the realization that this Wanderer was laying many traps to ensnare her and bring her to her knees, using even long-fallen soldiers to do his bidding. What evil is this?

Coming closer to her first true goal, Calavera began exploring the jail in search of the evil that had shut the gates to the east. The first floor was uneventful. The second floor provided her with her direst test yet. She stumbled upon a boss pack of ghosts, led by Puke Maw. She switched to her bow, as a group like that had the teeth to destroy her, and her new Tal rune did wonders against creatures at this lowly stage. Calavera wondered how long it would be effective. While dodging Puke Maw's attacks, she stumbled into another room, awakening the beast feared by many others, Pitspawn Fouldog. Calavera fought both boss monsters and their packs simultaneously, triumphant but also sober in knowing that even harder battles lay ahead.

She forged on, with her trusty poisonous hunter's bow and faced Andariel, the master of the wilderness. Many arrows pierced the heart of the demonness before she fell, but Calavera's bow and fleet feet won the day, her initial target vanquished. Fear thee! Calavera did not know what would happen upon the demon's demise, but it did not quench her thirst for vengeance. As she left the area, she said a prayer for her youngest daughter and smashed Andariel's lifeless head with her simple boots. So much for demonic royalty, but the challenge proved difficult, and Calavera joined with Warriv to travel to the desert in seach of the Wanderer. Upon arrival in Lut Gholein, she hired a mercenary to accompany her for the rest of her journey, God willing. Two shall be a far superior fighting force than merely one, and companionship might prove valuable to her, for sanity's sake.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Well, I haven't been that lucky with runes except for Tir's and Tal's but I am hoping the Forge will give me a Shael :) I have been using the same weapons since The fight with Duriel in Act 2...

@ Jiansonz: I have not been too lucky with S/U Drops, But are you doing full clears?
I haven't been, but even if I start now, It looks like I will only be lvl 40-41 by the time I finish. I have done almost everything on /p 8 so far.

But hopefully I will get some more play time in today, maybe get a point in Frenzy and kick some Diablo Booty!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

@OldSoldier: Calavera has a great figure for a woman who's had 5 children...must be all the exercise involved in honing her skills. I've never seen an assassin with a bow, but it should be very useful for one who can't have a range merc. Congrats on finishing Act 1. :)

Yes, I am doing full clears. Always.

Why do you think you´ll only be lvl 40-41 by the "time you finish"? Do you mean at the end of Normal difficulty? I seriously doubt that, unless you kill only about 1/3 of the monsters...
You started Act IV at level 31, only one lower than /p8 full clear pace.

I always end Act IV at level 35, then I gain 13-14 levels in Act V. It´s huge, and the monsters give a ton of XP. Totally worth it to hunt down every last imp, I think.

Sorry to crush your hopes, but the Normal Hellforge rune doesn´t go higher than Amn. There is a decent chance to find one it Act V, though.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Well, I didn't do full clears of act II, It just annoys me :) but yes I meant Normal. I did full clear act III pretty much, so maybe I can reach 45-47.

It is good to know what the Norm Hellforge can drop, I never really paid attention to normal.

Thank you for the advice!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Hah, if this tourney is interesting enough in concept to attract such topnotch, hardcore diablo heroes as Old Soldier and Insane Wayne, not to mention jiansonz himself, all praise to the mighty magicfind guide creator, this tournament is probably several leagues out of my reach... think: Kindergarten football = me, the tourney = Dallas Cowboys.

Nuf said.
I will lurk it out from the sidelines I think. I have developed a scaring propensity for lurking.

The way I look at it, the Gods of D2 look even better in comparison with my pathetic efforts, so i'm really doing them a favor :whistling:

My random Druid is at level 17 and the Outer Cloister now. Slow progress...level 2 maul until it gets boring, then level 2 molten boulder. Pelts are starting to drop, but just +1 to one skill so far. With a rare xbow, I now have a second way (besides bowling) to pick off DVed critters while waiting for mana.

(Still ISO Oak Sage. It is valuable on its own, and necessary to open up Dire W and ultimately Grizzly, without which I cannot get out of normal.)
Countess? Drum roll please....

El, El.

I'm still waiting on a ruling as to whether I can wait to determine my act 3 merc by randomizing across all those available to hire, after I turn in the Gibbin. If i'm going to be stuck with fire, I don't want to know!
Edit: I just saw the table entry, I guess it is OK.

It´s perfectly fine to delay the roll for the subtype until it´s time. It should still be exactly 1/3 chance to get each of the elements. I guess the generation of the list can be seen as part of the randomization process.

But why not roll a die to determine the element when you get there, then hire the one of that element with highest level (or if there are more than one, coolest name)?

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Randall made it through Act 1! Andariel was no match for him, it only took one light potion to finish her off. His first act in Lut Gholein was a trip to Lysander to sell off the light potions he'd been stockpiling for a tough battle that didn't happen. Atma's revenge can wait, Randall and Annor are headed to the Halls of the Dead to get the Cube.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Jiasonz, gratz on entering NM.. As I play same class with same merc, I can see now that it isn't easy to accomplish. :thumb:

Oblivion_Bob managed to kill Andy. That yellow ammy has 9MF :wink2:. He did it with a Stoutnail as a primary weapon. It was no trouble to do it on P8 whatsoever.. Clay golem rules.
I decided to use stoutnail just before entering Andy's chabmer, when I encountered this guy who my minions couldn't kill at all (3 skeletons& Clayie).
Also managed to click on that boring Asheara saying "hello" and running after me every time I passed, but that hairy thing at tree off inifus took her over.
Haven't got much luck with stats point, so Bob has 44 Strenght, 49 Dexterity, 33 Vitality & 49 energy.
Skills are:
-3 Points: Amplify damage & Posion Dagger
-2 points: Skeleton Mastery, Raise skeleton, Clay golem, Dim Vision & Weaken
-1 point: Golem Mastery, Blood Golem, Iron Maiden & Terror
not much luck in PNB tree.. maybe that's not to bad?

So, He's off to see what will desert bring to him.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Story
_____________________________________

Danny noticed the tall handsome, swathy man next to the huge fire immediately after he entered the camp. Warriv, the man said his name was. Fine name for a fine fellow. Danny figured he could do some male bonding with him, given all the feisty *****es here. Particularly that menacing one shootng dark glares at him from the other side of the campfire. Yeah, danny didn't really want a piece of that! He quickly figured out that the male/female ratio in the camp was waaaaay off, so he decided to seek some peace and quiet in the moor outside.
As it turned out, there were boatloads of creatures and undead aronud who objected to Danny's definition of peace and quiet, so Danny was forced to do a bit of light exercise first. Soon, all sorts of creatures were dead, including a number of creatures that had been dead to begin with, which really confused Danny the simple barbarian, so he let that subject matter rest. in peace.
With three experience shrines in the blood moor, Danny figured he could gain some levels in the cold plains. And he could, but he soon found that his puny little hand axe was a bit outmatched against a trident wielding might enchanted Dark Rogue. Therefore, once he finally managed to kill the *****, he decided to shop for his favorite type of weapon... Blunt and crushing, a perfect match to his personality.
A Vicious sceptre of slaying was found, and equipped, and the rest of the cold plains pretty much ceased to be anything of a problem after that. He found one more XP shrine, which was saved for the cave.
First, someone, namely a feisty blonde woman in the camp, had told him of a cemetary closeby with more of those living dead in there. Sounded like a good place to use that sceptre of slaying, so he went in, and pretty much romped through the entire burial ground, including a poisonarrow toting Bloodraven. In the crypt Bonebreaker was kind enough to drop an ethereal deadly large axe of the leech, which is now the offweapon switch.
That left the cave. Near the entrance Danny found both a hungrydead champion and hero pack, and once he had killed the lot, he was very close to lvl 12. Of course, the next mob he found was Cold crow. So he simply dashed past her and her minions, and continued to lay waste to the other cave denizens. In the second lvl, a stoneskinned archer hero was problematic, but with a bit of running around, Danny managed to split that pack up as well, and soon all were bludgeoned to death. Now he had reached lvl 12, and a gambling spree followed, netting him boots with 13% MF and gloves with 7%. Better then nothing he thought, particularly since no topazz had dropped yet, so he fought Coldcrow and her minions one at a time. Not a very hard fight with a bit of splitting up of the pack, and soon he could admire the crappy drop. After that bit of misery, Danny decided to return to the camp and indulge in some male bonding with that ebony dude at the fire.

Stats and skills
---------------------------------------------------------------
Not much to say here. My first level was very good, with 4 vitality and 1 dex point, but other then that, most of my stat points have landed in dex, and basically tied in second place are strength and energy, with vit trailing slightly behind.
Skills are terrible. I can proudly say that I managed to land all of my skillpoints so far in 1 tree, namely passives. Given that I am just now lvl 12, you just know I only have masteries with skillpoints. And the ONE mastery that could be useful for a barb with crappy skillpoint deployment, namely throwing mastery for some ranged action, is the ONLY mastery I missed with skill point assignment. Ain't that swell?

The numbers:
Str 46, Dx 39, Vit 34, En 21
Skills:
Sword mastery - 5
Axe mastery - 1
Mace mastery - 2
Spear mastery - 2
Polearm mastery - 2

Equipment: Nothing fancy yet. Shopped a 3os ringmail already, and I am using a rarebuckler corpsefire dropped with some +life and attack takes dam + 15 FBR/ 10 ICoB
The rings both give me goldfind, and my cap some energy (as if I need it with no skills to deploy :) ) That was just the first rare headgear that dropped.

I found a lot of yellows, but none really useful, allthough I have a rare javelin in my stash with some posion/cold damage on it.
As mentioned, no topazzes yet, allthough I did find a number of rubies/and diamonds and at least one of the other gem types.

Thoughts
----------------------------------------------------------

Barbarians possibly have the most difficult journey ahead of all classes, because of the way this tournament assigns skills and the way the skilltrees have been developed. I figured from the getgo I'd have to start assigning skills from the start, hoping to break open the combat tree as soon as possible. I doubt it's going to happen, every 6th lvl the chances are decreasing :P
See, at lvl 1, there are 6 skills to select from, and at lvl 6, the number of available skills in the passive tree increases to 6. That is a very significant number, as attested by my current skill point assignment :)
I hope I get a good ruby flow going, and that my dex keeps up, so that I can perhaps become some sort of tank for my lightning merc, if I make it to there...

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Slapdash searched the false tombs, and finally took on Duriel... and actually won! I thought Kaa would be the hardest in the tombs, but actually in Duriel's tomb, there were two rooms with huget unraveler (?) packs. One room had 4 champions and 5 regulars. It was touch and go as I slowly lead (thankfully, I had room to back up into empty rooms) the scarabs out of the rooms to kill. Slapdash grazed death only once, but my heart was beating every time I had to run into that room and have all of them tossing their little black orbs at me as well as raising their minions.

He got through it though! Duriel surprised me as he seemed super easy at first, but then the rogue (who does more damage than the pally does) got near Duriel and wouldn't back off and just kept doing her spuradic walking back and forth. I finally got her separated from him and I tanked and... slowly... the two of them took him down. Yay!

Now in Kurast, the first thing I did was buy a teleportation staff for emergencies. I liked the enchant staff I found (as Slapdash can use all the help he can get on damage!), but 150,000 for 22 charges seemed excessive. Maybe when I build up the money again...

I also bought a garnet heavy belt to help out my resistances.

So stats:
Str 52
Dex 56
Vit 67
Ene 40

I think this guy has rolled pretty well for stats, over all!

Only new skill is Vigor which I love for running around. I've never really played a pally before, so I'm curious if it actually makes him attack faster, too? Still nothing but Thorns in the Offensive Auras, but he does have a sceptor that adds +3 Might and Thorns, so I've been testing those out and found I like the Might though I tend to use Cleansing quite a bit since it regenerates health 6.

No other items have been found. I don't know a lot about runewords, but I think I'll do some research into low level ones! :)
