Re: Patch 1.12 released

Even it's a very minor fix they did, it's quite pleasant one!
Hopefully they still continue to put some effort to atleast some of those things they broke last time they made a patch.

[Edit: Pasted information of wrong patch - - - - - tired morning eyes....]

Re: Patch 1.12 released

For all the Mac users:

IIRC the RWM file that Cat has on her site is packaged into the version file. So if you upgrade to 1.12 you will loose you RWM.

Edit:
On the other hand I want to try it out, even thought I run from a disk image. Hopefully it will stop the crazy fan / drive activity I get now.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

I think that we shouldn't complicate trading statuses when there are no gameplay changes. It would be a mess.

Other things to consider before installing 1.12 (before accidantly clicking on BNet button):
Does MP works between 1.11 and 1.12? (I guess not)
Does RWM(RRM) works? (This doesn't particularly affects me, but it's the important question for most of the SPF)
Does Atma work? (It should, there were no changes in save file structure, no changes in MPQs, so drop calc should be still the same too)

From my point of view, I am impressed by Blizzard developers releasing a patch without repairing any "this field has wrong value in it" bugs. But hey, more space on my hardrive after deleting D2 image! Hooray!

Re: Patch 1.12 released

IMO, 1.11b does not equal 1.12. If you feel you need to play w/o a CD, feel free to patch, but don't expect to sell your 1.12 tainted items to me and please stay out of my 1.11b MP games.

i find this a bit too harsh a sentiment. since nothing really changes with this official patch then "taint" isnt an issue imo.

many of us will probably take a spin on the new bnet ladder so will have no choice but to install the patch.

as a frequent host and joiner of games i would like to make clear that i have no issues with anyone joining my games after installing patch 1.12.

as for the whole trading thing, i think the powers that be will have to make a final decision.

after i install the patch (if / when) i will start putting 1.12 in my hosting posts.. dune

Grow some brains then come back and engage in sensible discussion. For a start the client won't let you connect to a 1.11 MP game, so you can wipe that off your list.

Secondly, it's more like:

If you want to stick with the old patches and not update as Blizzard wishes you to, if you want the hassle of playing with a CD, then don't expect to sell your 1.11 tainted items to me.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

I'll give it a try (I'm independent of trading or MP).

For some reason reinstalling on XP I needed both D2 play and LOD disc. So that's 1GB less for me if the no-CD works.

@BobTheWarrior: Nice, interesting to see you call a official Blizzard release "tainted".

Re: Patch 1.12 released

No wonder so many people don't want to trade.

You have never traded. Thanks for your input.

I think that we shouldn't complicate trading statuses when there are no gameplay changes. It would be a mess.

I appreciate that you don't fully understand the complexities involved, as Cattleya oversaw the SPTF.

The SPF/SPTF is the SPF/SPTF because we don't emulate the icky things that other forums shrug at. Namely, HC<>SC, 1.11>1.07, Vanilla<>Modded, editors, cheats etc.

That isn't going to change. Irrespective of WHAT this patch does, it IS a patch therefore it is perfectly acceptable to treat it as such.

If you think I'm happy, I'm not. I would have liked a proper patch with new features. Namely getting rid of RWM, getting into the Ubers and such. It didn't happen.

You can't make up exceptions to trade rules because it's "annoying" to you. You have to work on precendent and simplicity. That's what I did yesterday. 1.12 is not 1.11. Clear enough?

I have tried 1.12 on one of my machines. (No characters/stashes.) I get to not use the image. Whoopee; could do that already. I need a new .dll to run multiple instances, stuff that.

as a frequent host and joiner of games i would like to make clear that i have no issues with anyone joining my games after installing patch 1.12.

Well no. If you are in a 1.12 MP game and an item is found, it's 1.12, the characters are 1.12 and they all stay 1.12. To do anything else is the same as moving items/chars back in versions and we don't do that.

Grow some brains then come back and engage in sensible discussion.

Another comment like that and you'll be having enough of a break to be doing some growing of your own.

For a start the client won't let you connect to a 1.11 MP game, so you can wipe that off your list.
Good.

If you want to stick with the old patches and not update as Blizzard wishes you to, if you want the hassle of playing with a CD, then don't expect to sell your 1.11 tainted items to me.

You do not need the cd to play 1.11. You need original disks but you don't need the CD. I'll pm the details to anyone who wants them.

I appreciate everyone is a little het up about this. I appreciate more than most how it affects the trade/mp pool. But try and look at the wider picture before shouting "that's silly".

It's annoying, time consuming, takes up disk space and memory to run. Using an disk image to run the game == needing a CD to play the game. It's the same as putting a CD in the drive, it's just you're putting a virtual CD into a virtual CD drive.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

If it doesn't touch the mpq's I assume mods like Median that swapped out the 1.11b .mpq file should still work fine?

I'm not upgrading just yet.

Median will work fine. The patch only affects anything that code edits directly in the DLLs.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

"...the client won't let you connect to a 1.11 MP game, so you can wipe that off your list. "

I'd forgotten that, thanks for clarifying, makes it easier for everyone.

Nice, interesting to see you call a official Blizzard release "tainted".

"Taint" is the forums word, not mine. I'm considered 'tainted' because I use RWM and RRM. It just so happens that the majority of the people on this forum that trade/mp have the same taint, so it's generally not an issue. It's one of the reasons why we have trade tags, which I'm going to be appreciating more in the coming days.

If 1.12 becomes widely accepted among the traders/MP'ers I'll be upgrading to the patch, makes no difference to me. But, so long as I have not upgraded, I do not want the 1.12 items in trades, as that would 'taint' me to 1.12.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

I for one will not upgrade to 1.12 until a CLEAR MAJORITY (90% or so) of everyone i play and/or trade with has done so. The lack of "backwards compatability" so to speak really makes this an unattractive patch.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

I upgraded to 1.12 a moment ago, since I haven't traded (or posted) in a million years.

It just bums me out to see this patch. It feels like Blizzard just put the final stone on our tomb, and the little annoying bugs that are still in the game will never get addressed for SP.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

It's frankly amazing that they released a patch of any kind for a game this old. Does it fix or improve things we wanted? No. Do we have any business complaining about even bad support for a game this old? Newp. Even by not giving us new goodies, Blizzard showed themselves to be among the most fan-friendly developers once again.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

many of us will probably take a spin on the new bnet ladder so will have no choice but to install the patch.

I am surprised it took 5 pages before someone mentioned this obvious point. Does the patch do something bad? As has been said, no it doesn't.

The only reason to keep 1.11b is people being scared that they'll be "1.12 tainted", unable to trade/mp with others.

I personally will click the "b.net" button today, even if it prevents me from trading and MPing. I am convinced the majority of us will migrate to 1.12 sooner or later, just because there is no real reason to stay outdated.

Agreed. I just don't like being given false hopes. If they say "this is the final patch for diablo 2, cya in the next game!" I won't complain at all, I can and have coped with the little shortfalls such as the unholy keyboard-wall-breaking annoyance of the FE bug while on a hardcore melee char.

It's just that... keeping hoping for that little fix is annoying :/

Re: Patch 1.12 released

You will need a new D2Gfx.dll.
So does that mean TrenShadow's version switcher won't work anymore? That would be a reason for me not to upgrade...

Sorry for being a programming noob...

EDIT: btw, that reminds me: people switching back to older versions still would need either the CD or a CD image, right?

That's for multiple windows of D2 open. TrenShadows version switcher works fine here.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

The mac fix didn't even work. The common issue with mac users is that the latest OSX update (10.5.3) essentially bricked D2 because of changes in some PowerPC processes. Surprised that either they chose a different mac bug to fix, or that they fixed this one incorrectly.

Good thing for bootcamp...
