Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

Well I finally bought my second set of CDs only problem is my first set of CD's apparently have vanished since my last time playing the game. I still have the CD keys for them stored on word file but I can not find them anywhere, I'm assuming they are in a box in storage but that's in a different state, whoops.

My question is... Using the new game I bought is it still possible to install my new games using their new cd keys, but then change the directory name and install again using my old cd keys that I can't find the cds for?

I don't see any moral issues appearing since I actually own the cd's just don't have them anymore. But I was wondering if any technical issues arrive with installing twice with same cds? I thought I the CD's are universal, but I was wondering if connecting twice on B.net causes any problems if the game is installed with same cd's twice?

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

On my normal account both coppies seem to work without problems, but when I switch to my Guest account I can run Diablo II but I get the "Unable to identify application version" thingie...

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

you can put all 8 in a game if you bother with getting a private socks server....but that's really for the hardcore folks

Problem solved. Had to create a new acc. with Admin. Powah as User Switch and then install the 2nd copy being logged on as that 2nd user...

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

I decided to do this for easy muling, and rushing and such.
And I very much regret it, due to the fact I can no longer play D2 PERIOD.
I asked my friend for his old diablo 2 cd-key, he gave me it, but his must have been disabled or had some problems with it, cause It didn't work when I installed it on the second user.
I then uninstalled it, and then just went to play on my normal user.
I clicked Battle.net and it said I was "Unable To Join", or w/e.
I uninstalled it and restarted my computer many times, thinking this was just some little error, though it still didn't work.
I restored my computer a month back, when diablo II was first installed on my PC, and it still didn't work.
It doesn't say my key is banned, so I have no idea why it wouldn't be working.
I even installed it on my other computer and got the SAME problem.
I tried Blizzard support and everything, now I am asking you guys for help.
=D
Hopefully someone knows what to do...

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

So the only way to run multipule D2's in v1.12 is to do the user switch thing? Is there no CDKey creator like for 1.11 where you didnt need to install it twice...?

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

Is there a way to find out what key you used for your install after the install? I have two copies of the game installed on two computers. I wanted to make sure that I did not use duplicate keys.

Bump, I have a similar situation I hope someone here can help me, and us, address. I recently bought a second cd key from an online vendor to do this mod, but ran into the same situation as this person above. The problem is when I rename the first directory and install the game a second time with a different new cd key, I get the problem of the "key has been disabled" and I can only play offline. I was wondering if there was any way to remedy this. bump bump bump

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

I installed D2 + exp... Patched, then changed folder name and then removed it with add/remove.

Logged with another user and tried to install D2, it's says this: unable to save uninstall data file

I'm using Windows Vista.

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

This is a great guide and I thank orphan for posting it.

I'm thinking of getting back into D2 and now I have 3 account keys.

I will admit that I had used D2loader last time I played, (after losing 3 CD Rom drives, running without the CD was important to me) but I wanted to avoid it completely this time. P.S. to my knowledge it had no trojan in it as was implied.

That said, I don't like using it and I didn't use it for very long (course my last stay was very short as well). Now, however, the CD is no longer required to run D2... so I was hoping for a way to run 2 copies of D2 on my computer WITHOUT user switching.

This is obviously opposed to the idea of the thread I suppose, as the OP talks about not using any 3rd party programs or downloading hacked DLL files. Just to test out I checked, and hacking the DLL files to run multiple copies of D2 is so easy, essentially entailing changing 1 byte of data. That said, I tried it, got it to work, and got it to work on B.net (though I havent really played, just tested it and I'm sorry if this is talking about hacking but in all fairness I got the guide for how to modify the DLL file from the SP forum).

Now, it occurred to me that this COULD be against the EULA and it would be pretty easy for bnet to detect with their Warden software (I'm pretty sure it can scan the d2 dll files for changes). So, I went and read some of the EULA.

it has the ominous message (apparently chastising me): [You shall not be permitted to] ... modify any file that blizzard does not specifically authorize you to modify;

Then, to my surprise, the next line read: [You shall not be permitted to] ... Create or maintain, under any circumstance, more than one simultaneous connection to Battle.net. All such connections to Battle.net, whether created by blizzard software products or other tools and utilities, may only be made through methods and means expressly approved by Blizzard Entertainment.

I was surprised. I may go and un'hack' my dll files, but it appears any time more than one account operated by you is logged onto b.net you are violating the ToS, or so it would seem. I guess if I returned them to their original state (or reinstalled which could be necessary depending on your interpretation of the ToS and how close scrutiny blizzard would put your files under, though I doubt I'll reinstall as that's just a hassle).

Anyway, anyone have any response to this, anyone know this already?

Oh one other thing that happened after I changed my files, I have to run D2 from game.exe instead of Diablo2.exe (this was the case after simply renaming the folder and installing a 2nd copy of D2.) anyone know if this is bad news or just par for the course?

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

Hmmm, just thinking about this "fast user switching" option. I wouldn't think of switching between users all the time, far too anoying, but can't the switching be skipped by using the "run as" command? You'd do it the same way as fast user switching, but instead of switching the that user, you use the "run as" command. Never tested it, might do it when I get home.

This seems a far better option than using a VM, which I'm doing now. Two VM's on my core2-duo-6600 is reasonably doable (running both VM's on 1 core for responsiveness), but 3 is impossible.

Late edit: checked it, and no, it does not work

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

I'm getting an error on the second account:

"Unable To Identify Version"

Battle.net is unable to properly identify your Application version"

The first Diablo works like normal.

The second gives me this error. It would be greatly appreciated if someone knew how to fix this :\

Edit: Got it working! Set your User account to: Admin instead of the other :O You don't need to install the game on the new user account, either.

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

How SOME people are supposedly getting banned using 2 legit paid copies of D2, along with fast user switching:

They use the trade forum on this very site, and setup up a mule trade on another acct so that 2 people in different time zones can swap the items at their convenience(since it's unlikely they could both arrange to get on Bnet at the same time). The player with legit cd keys sends the mule acct info to the other trader, and perhaps he even has 2 legit cd keys as well..... but the 2nd person has been using a D2 loader, and unthinkingly uses the loader when he accesses YOUR acct info to get to the mule for trade swap.

Boom.. next time you get on your mule acct to move the newly traded item back to your main acct, you get the dreaded "banned(8)" msg. This is one way that completely legit players are getting burnt by Blizzard's questionable decision to turn on Warden the day before launching the new WoW expansion.

Re: Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

I've been away from D2:LOD for about 3 weeks, and I saw the mass ban from blizzard some days ago. It's a good things, less cheater. But I have a concern about something. I read that you can't have more than 1 account by connection.

Here my setup, how I've play D2 since 1 year. I have 2 computers, 1 laptop and 1 desktop. I have 2 legit copie of D2:LOD, so I have 2 legit cd key. I have 3 accounts on Bnet, 1 main for my played hero and 2 accounts for my mules. I use my 2 computers to self mule, self rush or to MF. I have a routeur to distribute my internet to my computers.

Can I be ban by using this method, because I will have 2 connections to bnet? I'm a little confuse about this.

P.S. Sorry for my bad english, it's not my primary language.

I have been running two Diablo 2 games to do self muling, rushing etc. for a few days now after the ban wave. The most important thing is that you have not modified any D2 files and are not using any 3rd party software. Two computers behind the same ip-address should be fine. Also using VMWare or fast user switching is not a bannable offense.

Summary: You can't be banned for playing multiple D2 games using only one ip-address. End of story.
